Samantha groaned as she and Kevin reached the entrance to the National Park. It was far from the hot, humid, fire covered area she was hoping to go to though she was happy there wasn't much water around for once. " Tell me again why we are here instead of a nice warm volcano, such a place would be lovely this time of year." Kevin chuckled before he responded having little doubt the Braixen was not going to be a fan of what was about to go down. " We are here to take part in the Bug Catching Contest and to get you some training in the process since your Flamethrower will be great against any bug we do not capture."
Samantha groaned again before she started to look around for sticks as they waited for the contest to start. The young fire type had a feeling she would need a healthy supply of sticks unless she wanted to breath directly onto nasty bug types which she wanted to avoid getting too close to at all costs. Numerous other trainers and their Pokemon were waiting for the start of the contest as well and it looked like it would be a tough contest for sure but even if they did not win a prize Samantha would gain valuable experience for their upcoming gym battle. Plus it meant Kevin could see just how skilled the young Braixen was when she had a type advantage and a level advantage.
" Samantha I do believe things are about to start, get ready as once we head into the grass I am sure a number of bug types will jump out at us. I hope you have found enough sticks by now to last us through the contest or else we will have to find more as we go along." Just as Kevin finished speaking Samantha found a stash of sticks near a small bush and picked them up knowing how valuable they would be in such a flammable area. Had she been a heartless Pokemon she could set the whole area ablaze with them but instead she decided to keep any of her Flamethrower attacks focused to a small area to minimize any collateral damage. " Yes I found quite a few good ones. If any bug touches my sticks they will pay a dear price. I will try not to burn the whole place down in the process."
The two then started to search for their first encounter hoping to get lucky.

To say that the contestants were excited about the bug catching contest would be an understatement. Many of the kids that waited for the bell would hold their long nets in their hands with wide, hopeful eyes. The judge walked up to the front of the crowd and tapped on his microphone, testing the sound volume a few times before he walked through the rules. Some of the smaller children would scream and pout about needing the Zephyr Badge, though one of the staff members would easily scoop them up and walk them away from the gathering to the sidelines, filled with toys and other such distractions to help calm their emotional spirits. A few others were busted before the games even began as the staff members checked each member to ensure that no one was sneaking in more than one of their Pokemon team members to help them battle the bug Pokemon in the surrounding grasses. They pitched a fit and screamed in the staff members’ faces, with some becoming quite physical until nearby officers would quietly usher them away. “We’re sorry you had to see that…but without further ado, let the fun and games begin!” The judge waved his twin Scyther flag and opened the doors wide to allow the trainers to flood through them and into the surrounding wild grasses that swelled all around the large fountain in the center of the park. Many of the younger trainers pushed and shoved each other as they ran and tried to beat each other to the ‘best’ Pokemon catches. A small bug hid and cowered in the grasses nearby with wide eyes. When another trainer walked closer to the small spiky chrysalis, it would immediately grab random sticks and small twigs with its mouth and spit it out at the short-haired schoolboy, scaring the other kid away. “That thing is dangerous!” He wailed, having a small Hoppip floating behind him as its obvious partner in the contest. It wouldn’t be until the small Cascoon noticed Samantha trying to gather sticks that it would hop closer and smile with a bright, hopeful expression. Maybe they wouldn’t be nearly as scary as all the other trainers! Immediately, it gathered some sticks and spat them at Samantha, hoping to get her attention. “Hey!” The Cascoon screamed. “Over here!” A Wild Cascoon is pelting Samantha with sticks!  Level 10. Samantha noticed as the Cascoon tried to pelt her with sticks and she almost screamed at the sight of such a nasty creature. She had no idea what the little pest wanted but it was about to have a very quick meeting with her flames if she had anything to say about it. " Stay back you foul beast, I will not hesitate to burn you to a crisp if you get any closer to me." She snarled as Kevin looked over and noticed the poor bug. He knew Cascoon were not too rare or strong and as such was not about to waste the effort in capturing it but Samantha could still benefit from knocking it out.
As Kevin looked on he had little doubt Samantha could make quick work of the poor bug type with her flames or her psychic powers even if they were not fully developed yet. He wanted her to get some practice in with her Psychic attack however as Flamethrower would be both super effective and benefit from her type he decided to stick with it for now hoping that she would get a chance to practice the other move later down the line. As he took a deep breath he looked over at the young Braixen and gave her his orders.
" As bad as I feel for this poor Cascoon it did spit sticks at you. It might be a bit harsh but your Flamethrower attack should teach it a bit of respect. I know it will do a lot of damage but so long as it survives it will not forget this experience as long as it lives." He then watched as Samantha grabbed one of her sticks and lit it ablaze with her tail. Once it was fully engulfed in flames she pointed it at the bug and made her intentions quite clear. She was in no mood to put up with it anymore. " You had your fun but it is time I put an end to this charade once and for all. My flames will engulf you in a baptism of fire."
Seconds later she took a deep breath before exhaling towards the stick sending a large wall of fire towards Cascoon. Samantha even had another stick ready just in case the first Flamethrower did not do enough damage to the bug wanting this battle to be over as soon as possible.

The bug's eyes widened in shock when the fires blasted at it and there was nothing left but a charred spot. The grasses around it smoldering from the fire but not really threateningly to spread.  Samantha gets (10*50) 500 exp and she grows to level 27! (342/2269) She's at max health |

As Samantha completely obliterated the poor Cascoon Kevin felt awful about the vixen committing complete overkill. He knew Samantha would do a lot of damage but he did not expect so much destruction from a single attack. If there was any good news it was that the fires did not spread and Samantha leveled up from her efforts. " I do suppose that is a job well done even if the outcome was not quite what I had in mind. That Cascoon suffered a terrible fate but it will not mess with anyone else ever again as awful as it is to say." He then watched as Samantha gathered more sticks that she could use to focus her fire type attacks.
With all the bug types around she knew she was going to need a whole bunch of them and the ones Cascoon spit at her were the perfect size and shape to use for that purpose. After she gathered as many as she believed she would need she walked over to Kevin and looked at him as the middle aged man started to think of which area to search for another bug. To win this contest he would need something stronger than a Cascoon but he still had plenty of time to try and find something better. As Samantha could get plenty of training done as well he was in no hurry to end his part in the contest until he had used every encounter he was allowed regardless of whatever he might catch down the line.
" So where are we going to search next? The sooner we can get this mess over with and head for a volcano the better." Samantha asked as Kevin had still not made up his mind yet. Not only was there a bunch of tall grass around but there were areas with shorter grass as well that could hide something good. As he wanted to find a big bug type however he felt sticking to the tall grass would be the best option for now as it would be the more likely spot to encounter larger Pokemon. " Let's stick around here for now and see if we find anything else worthwhile. If not we can always try the shorter grass later on."
The pair then started to search again hoping they would have better luck this round. As their contest had just started they were not too worried but the sooner they found something good the better.

As a Butterfree appeared next Kevin was a bit more intrigued though he still had doubts that it would be rare or strong enough to win the Bug Catching Contest. As he still had a number of encounters left and he considered risking an uncommon Pokemon worth it he decided to have Samantha battle it as well with no intention of capturing it. " Well this is a slightly better find but I think we can still do a bit better, Samantha it looks like you will get to have fun with this one as well as we will not need to capture it."
As he finished speaking Samantha stepped forward and grabbed another one of her sticks. The Butterfree looked a bit tougher than Cascoon but she still was confident in her ability to battle the bug type due to both her type and higher level. " Ah yet another pest, a shame that only bugs show up during this contest as I am such such a beautiful park must be home to a number of far less annoying Pokemon. All well at least this should make for great target practice if nothing else." She said as she took aim at the Butterfree. Once Kevin gave the order to attack she would not show any mercy to the poor bug type.
Kevin paused for a moment as he considered which move he wanted Samantha to use. He still wanted her to practice her Psychic attack but as Butterfree was a stronger target than Cascoon he decided to have her use Flamethrower again as it was the only move that he was sure would knock Butterfree out before it could attack so Samantha could preserve her health for a later battle just in case see needed it. There was no telling which bugs might show up and he did not want to sacrifice any of her health too early for no good reason. He looked at Butterfree for a moment before he gave Samantha the order to strike again.
" Samantha use Flamethrower on Butterfree, here is hoping it cannot endure it so we can keep looking for another bug. Our luck so far has not been too bad but nothing so far seems worthy of entering in the contest and we still have a few more chances left." He then waited to see the results of the next round knowing that his choice was a bit of a risk but one he had to take.

As Samantha quickly dealt with the Butterfield Kevin knew he had to really hunker down in his search for a good bug type as not only was his time running thin but he only had three more encounters to try and get something worthwhile. Things were not looking great so far as nothing truly spectacular had shown up yet. Even so he was determined to see this contest through to the end no matter how poor their luck may be. " Let's keep trying our luck in the tall grass. I do not think switching will make much of a difference with our current luck anyway." He said as the pair started to look for another bug type. All he could do was keep trying and hope for a good stroke of luck to come his way

Seeing yet another Pokemon that had little chance of winning the Bug Catching Contest left Kevin a bit discouraged. He only had a few more encounters after this one but knew it was not worth entering Illumise. With that in mind he knew a quick end to the battle to save some time was the only real choice he had. " Samantha I hate to do this to the poor dear but use your Flamethrower so we can end this matter quickly." The Braixen smiled as she struck a stick against her tail and lit it abblaze. She then took aim at the bug type Pokemon and got ready to strike.

The Illumise seemed quick to understand that Samantha was trouble and the smartest thing would be to run off as fast as possible. It lingered though, which it would come to regret but the fact that Samantha pulled a stick from her tail and lit it fire fascinated it. It was just so strange! Then the flames came and with a singed back the illumise zipped away to disappear in the National Park. Samantha gets (50*17) 850 exp (1942/2269) |

With the battle over Kevin started to desperately look for another encounter. Time was quickly running out and he did not have many encounters left to try and secure a worthy bug type. If he was quick he might have two encounters left and he had to make them count. " We will really need to move to come in under the buzzer. This next battle has to be quick one way or another if we want to complete both remaining encounters in time. Samantha I hope you are ready for quite a tough timeframe. We need to find another bug quickly." He said as he hoped another bug would be close by.

The appearance of a Pi sir was quite a welcomed sight for sore eyes. Such a rare bug could easily win the contest if Kevin could capture it in juat a few tries. It would be no easy task but it would be well worth trying for such a rare specimen. " Samantha we won't be attacking this one just yet. Pinsir is quite rare and well worth our time. I have a fewling capturing it will be very hard but I have to try. Stand guard just in case luck is not on our side." He then grabbed a Sport Ball and tossed it at Pinsir. As unlikely as it was to work he knew a full health Pinsir would be tough to beat.
