Age: 30
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Gentleman (future Team Rocket Applicant)
Hometown: Celadon City
Appearance:
Silas is tall man, standing over six foot, with broad shoulders and a fit build. He possesses a clear complexion and cold, intelligent violet eyes. He naturally has dark hair that he dyes blond, including his brows and beard, as a means of altering his appearance from how he looked before coming to Johto. In fact, he prefers to be clean shaven with his hair short and sticked back, but needs must. The slightly rumpled, more youthfully stylish look is all the better for blending in on the streets. Though he does have a bit of trouble letting go of his suits. Depending on the situation, he might shed the jacket, but he often travels in an expensive looking suit—vest, tie and all—as if he's a businessman on a commute, or going into an interview later. He wears it familiar and well, and sports some shiny excessories like pins and a watch that must have at one point cost a pretty penny (though he'll "modestly deny their authenticity" if the situation calls for it) and is often smiling a pearly, perfect smile.
He can change things up and dress down, but this is usually only when he has to do so. Or is forced into a situation where the suit would make him stick out too badly and possibly draw the attention of the authorities.
Traditionally handsome, Silas likes to flaunt his good looks and dress his best.
But if it means avoiding the past, he'll keep the itchy beard for now...
Personality:
There are a few undeniable hard facts about Silas: he is vain, he is arrogant and he is exceptionally intelligent.
One look at the man and you can see the first two things as easily as one might the pages of a magazine left open in the middle of an empty room. He holds himself upright at all times with a swaggering confidence bred in actual achievement rather than put on for show. Silas is hot stuff and he knows it. He likes to think himself charming and charismatic as well, but perhaps this is where the image starts to wrinkle. Silas is charming...like a CEO or a car salesman is charming. He's grandiose and puts on a good show, and talks a good talk, but sometimes it can feel off. Cold. Impersonal. Like the interaction is transactional and you being pleased with it is just part of the bargain to getting what he wants. He doesn't like to be rude. In fact, he is often extremely well-mannered and polite in the technical sense. But polite doesn't mean nice. Or kind.
A man of business, he thinks of the world in give and take. Black and white. What benefits him and what does not. Obstacles are for removing and people can be obstacles as easily as a bounced check. He is inherently fiscally focused. Greedy. Self-absorbed. If a deal doesn't make for monetary or social gains, he'll drop it without an ounce of guilt. Silas rarely feels shame or regret, and more often lingers on the anger of being wronged, even if he is caught out doing something outright illegal. The people with the most money run the world, so what if a few nobodies get hurt because they were easy to manipulate fools? He doesn't care for physical violence when he can just outsmart his targets.
And he is smart indeed.
He is smart and ruthless and can be downright manipulative. Lies come easy and his promises are cheap. He'll memorize names, faces and endless little details to charm what he wants out of others. He'll do the math and take risks to hit the jackpot. What's the harm in a little white collar crime? Everybody at the top does it.
(Doesn't mean he won't be a little sulky about being stuck at the bottom rung with the peons until he can claw his way back to the penthouse suite.)
History:
Silas was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
His parents were prestigious socialites, born and bred into a long line of old money. All they had to do was not be absolute dimwits and they'd never have to work a day in their simpering, pampered lives. And while Silas was young, he innocently thought he'd be on top of the world forever, as his parents doted upon him and included him in their lavish lifestyle of travel and the best money could offer. He went to elite private schools and was tutored by the finest of instructors. Silas had a brilliant mind that was being cultivated by an equally brilliant education. He made friends. Made connections. Lived a luxurious life.
However, when he turned sixteen, things started to fall apart.
He heard his parents bickering for years when they though he was out of earshot. Knew both of them had vices that children shouldn't know about. But the bickering turned to broken bottles and screaming and accusations. If it was just an affair or some drinking, it likely would have just ended in a divorce and nothing more. Life would go on. But it turned out that they both had more severe problems. His mother was a compulsive spender and that habit grew worse as her relationship with her husband grew sour. And his father turned out to have a gambling addiction. The two destructive paths collided and they suddenly discovered one day they were flat broke. They'd squandered a fortune generations had built.
Silas saw his future suddenly start to go up in smoke—burnt down by those reckless idiots!
So he made a snap decision. He stole his parents' financial records and went to a bachelor uncle who he knew used his own fortune well. A man with a company and a reputation for being callous.
Silas did not make a heartfelt appeal. He made a calculated business decision. An investment into himself at the expense of his parents. He exposed his parents' foolishness to the uncle and signed a deal with him that day. Later, he filed for emancipation from his parents with the courts and soon found himself under the guardianship of his uncle. All it cost to get his education and his fortune was his future.
He worked hard to pass the classes and get the degrees his uncle demanded of an 'heir' to his empire.
Silas learned to be colder. Learned to use his looks and charm to manipulate people. He learned good business sometimes involved under the table dealings and dirty hands—what's a little fraud and tax evasion but a hobby for the rich? People and pokemon were tools to be used to accomplish a goal.
When he turned twenty-eight, his uncle passed away...unexpectedly. Which left the company in his care. All of it, from what was presented on government forms to the underworld dealings nobody needed to know about. Silas was once more on top of the world, feeling powerful and like nothing could tear him down. But then...Team Rocket's downfall happened. The police got real nosy into any dealings involving the pokemon black market. They sniffed up a trail and found the tiniest leak in the scheme. Silas heard from one of his allies that they were closing in. That he would lose it all soon and go to prison like a common criminal.
He refused to go down that way.
So he gathered what resources he could before his accounts were locked, changed his appearance and bought a new identity.
He was now Silas Goldsmith, Goldenrod native and a pencil pusher who'd fallen onto hard times looking for a change of pace.
However, he's fully aware that battling gyms with the kids won't get him back on top of that mountain. He'd need to claw his way up in a more...underhanded fashion. Perhaps he'd start by stealing a few pokemon to better his disguise as a simple traveling trainer.
