Eusine had been a great help for Astrid's preparation for her trip deep into Dark Cave, he had even been so nice to give her the HM move Strength so that her pokemon could help her through such problems in there. She had been sent to the Dance Theater as they too could help her, mostly since apparently there were a lot of deep streams and underground lakes deep in the cave which her pokemon would need to know surf for to get over, and for some reason the Theater was known for that technic specifically.
The trouble was just to get it from them, since they were not open to the public normally and as they were popular they were hard to get a audience with.

"I have always wanted to see this!" Astrid said and looked like a kid on Christmas morning, she held her ticket tight in her had, right now she didn't care about getting close to the dancers. She handed the ticket to the doorman who accepted it and gave it back to her as he lead her in. She looked closer at it and quickly found her seat near the stage.
It was an evening show with food and the ticket had been expensive, but Astrid wanted to treat herself, she enjoyed the show and the food and would have been more than satisfied with just that.

The director of the Theater then stepped out on the stage and asked everyone to find their tickets, Astrid did so puzzled. The director held out a pouch and pulled up a little paper, then he called out a number.
Astrid waited in silence but as no-one else was claiming and everyone was looking around to see who had it, she raised her hand.
"That will be me," she said and he gestured for her to come up to the stage, she laughed and waived her hand dismissively, "I am too old to dance!"
She was reassured that wasn't expected off her and she was gently coaxed up to the stage, the director whispered in her ear and asked her to confirm she was a trainer and had brought pokemon with her. When he confirmed he stepped into the middle of the stage and she watched him suspiciously, "this might not be so relaxing as I thought," she mumbled.

The stage was a grand display! People from all over Johto gathered inside the doors of the Dance Theatre, brought there by their own intrigue, and glued to the spot due to the spectacle before them. Five girls spun around under the bright lights with large, flowing kimonos that draped down their bodies and along their arms. They swayed with each other in sync, sometimes spinning around the others. In their hands, each held intricately carved sensu fans that matched their intricately designed outfits. Music filled the room in a charming, rhythmic pace, and some of the travelers found themselves clapping cheerfully along.

When the time came to find their challenger amongst the crowd, the girls would easily and effortlessly spin to stand back in a line with their fans held up to obscure their face. They giggled softly, with gentle winks and slight nods to different members of the crowd. Part of the act. An illuision to keep those in attendance feeling as though they might be one of the lucky few who would ever get to meet the girls face to face. Some of the patrons argued over who truly owned what tickets – seems some came with friends, and now the paying friend wanted the most luck. But the bouncers were swift, gently tapping each person’s shoulders and warning them that they would only be allowed to ‘claim’ one numbered ticket chance for themselves.

When Astrid rose up, many young men crossed their arms over their chest and complained angrily about the perceived ‘unfairness’ of it all. Seems, they had a few crushes they’d wanted the chance to confirm whether it could be reciprocated or not. “Oh. I’ll be happy to go first! Rainer will be my partner for this fight.” Kimono Girl Kuni stated after some shared murmuring with her sisters. She stepped away from the other Kimono girls and walked bravely up to Astrid, pulling out a small red-and-white ball that she used to call out an aquatic blue mammal-like Pokemon. It had large spiky ridges running down its spine along its back, with a tail shaped like large, split fins. “I see you’ll be using a Kingdra, so this should be fun! Which water type will be the best, do you think?” Kuni asked playfully as she nodded expectantly to her energetic Vaporeon. "Just remember you can only face each of us with one Pokemon, and you can't use the same one twice." Kuni winked.

Astrid fully enjoyed the show, the girls were so elegant and clearly knew what they were doing. It was a joy to watch. Astrid happily joined the clapping when others did it and it seemed appropriate, it was not a modern concert so she could be a bit unsure of how she was supposed to act and show the performers her appreciation.
She heard the complains when she rose and she knew she didn't make a very impressive first look, with her leaning to her cane and slow shuffle to the stage where she would need help to get up. If she had thought more about it, she might have realized the young men's sour mood was more out of jealousy than her being old and therefore expected to not really be able to battle much at all.

They all waited for her to make the pick first, this was really going to be a challenge and she knew this was where she needed to show what she was worth as a trainer. This was more or less the only thing she would be able to during this battle but it was crucial and if she screwed up it would be her pokemon who paid for it.
"Silvia, this is all done for you, come and take the stage," Astrid called out, trying to do it loud but her voice was weak and only the closest of the audience would be able to hear her. If they had expected the old woman to have lapdogs or cute kitties only, they would probably be surprised to see the imposing kingdra which appeared.
"We have been challenged my dear, and their rule is that everyone gets one battle, she is going to show us your opponent in a moment," Astrid explained and Silvia lowered her head and stared at the kimono dressed women in front of her, one of them stepped forward fearlessly.
"Nice to meet you, right Silvia?" Astrid greeted kindly and the kingdra snorted, the old woman cleared her throat and the dragon sighed and bowed her head in a court nod. "My name is Astrid and this is going to be interesting. I had expected to have a night of relaxation but this is a nice surprise!"

"Silvia, as this is also a water type, I will suggest to power up and expect a long battle," she advice while Silvia didn't take her eyes of her opponent, she was looking for any signs of weakness or soft spot, anything which she could use to her advantage. Then she would sent a blast of draconic energies at the vaporeon.

The young lady with thick black hair donned in a bright blue Kimono bowed politely towards Astrid with a wide smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Astrid. Have you been on your journey for a while now?” She asked thoughtfully. She’d missed the broadcast a while back where Astrid faced off against Whitney in a Gym battle and was trying to politely point out Astrid’s advanced age as a trainer, without coming off as rude. She’d faced many trainers, though most of them were rarely as old as Astrid. By such an age, Kuni usually expected them to retire and enjoy the rest of their life relaxing. Given Astrid’s comment, Kuni suspected that her line of thought wasn’t that far off, either.

“Rainer, let’s give them a show! Kingdra are usually fast swimmers, but so are you! Try to use your Icy Wind to gain the advantage, then move in to Bite down on Silvia’s scales when she least expects it!” Kuni raised one hand to point at the bright blue seahorse. Her long Kimono draped over her hands, framing the lone finger that jutted out between the silky threads of cloth. They had to hope to gain the upper hand while Silvia worked on focusing her energy for her attack. Rainer barked energetically then released a long and bone chilling breath of air that wrapped around Silvia and dug in between her scales.

Then Rainer ran circles around his opponent. His thick tail slapped against the rough wooden floor, creating its own rhythmic beat as he jumped at Silvia from behind, pinning the large seahorse down and sinking his long, sharp fangs into Silvia’s side. Silvia easily plopped back up, turning on her opponent with a powerful draconic breath of air. “I suspect it will be quite an interesting battle, don’t you?” Kuni giggled, covering her face with her fan. “We love to relax, too. But we also love to train and test ourselves against worthwhile trainers.” She laughed with a wink. Rainer cried loudly as the blast of draconic energy sent her flying back to her side of the field. That hurt!

"That is a very good question," Astrid said and thought about it for a moment, "it depends on what it is compared against. If you compare it to my whole life, then no, then my journey with pokemon is very recent, but if you look at how much I have learned, how much have happened and how far my dear pokemon has come, then it was been quite a while," she said warmly. Her smile turned into a teasingly grin, "Of course I do not know if you are talking about my pokemon travel or mean a journey in a more poetic way? I may be near the end of life's journey so that certainly has gone on for a while." She gestured herself.
"Retirement is simply too boring dear, you need to keep yourself active!" She declared with a smile, unknowingly answering the unspoken question which Kuni had left hanging in the air.

Astrid's face fell and she frowned a bit, having a feeling that Kuni had some trick up her sleeve which she could use the speed for. There were so many tactics, it would be impossible for Astrid to keep up with them all, but hopefully luck would be on their side, and Silvia's strength so that they would pull through this battle. Silvia would never get over it, if she lost a battle with so many spectators so close to meeting the famous dragon tamer and convince him that she was the one for him.
The kingdra didn't seem to take things lightly luckily, taking her time to get to know her opponent before sending her draconic energies at the vaporeon.

Silvia didn't seem too bothered after having endured a couple of attacks, one even from a super effective move, and returned it with her own.
"I hope so, me and Silvia here has a thing to prove after all," Astrid said calmly and Silvia attempted to let loose another of her draconic energies which would hopefully show her opponent what he was up against and earn some respect.

"There is a thing which I have thought about," the old woman said thoughtfully after some moments, "it is very common for trainer to guide their pokemon throughout the battle, but what to do if your pokemon cannot hear the orders?"

"What to do if your pokemon cannot hear orders?" Kuni asked. "If you and your partner have been together for some time, it wouldn't be unreasonably to simply...trust them with their choices. Let them battle as wild pokemon do, instinctively. They may be so in sync with you that their battling is as effortless and familiar as it is when you give commands. Of course, that does require trust and dedication to the craft. A trainer to meek or too demanding might find themselves in a predicament."

She lowered her eyes for a moment, "I will keep in mind to stay as spry in my retirement as you. As you clearly are flourishing in true golden years." Kuni let out a little sigh, "Rainier, another bite."

Ideally, they would flinch the kingdra before it could paralyze them. But their efforts might be fruitless. Those dragonbreaths were strong, out pacing their own damage easily. And there wasn't much effective the water-type could do beyond stall. But until they lost, they would give their all.

Astrid nodded to Kuni's reasoning, "so what I already train them to do," she said, "although for other reasons." Now she thought about it, it actually was partly due to how much her pokemon could hear her, that they were trained to handle the battlepart themselves, her voice wasn't very loud or got through noise very well. She glanced at the audience and wondered how much or how little they could hear, at least it seemed like her opponent usually could hear what she said.
"So you have that bond with your vaporeon?" She asked curiously, "I will guess that not every one will have that reached that, and then what?" she mused aloud.
She studied Silvia and wondered what kind of trainer Lance was, if he he did end up thinking she was going to fit with his team. If the famous Dragon Tamer was one who guided his pokemon more than she did, would the proud kingdra be able to adapt to that?

Astrid chuckled and raised her staff which she waved in the air, "I would not say that I'm spry, my legs are bad and I tire easily, but as long as you learn to adapt and find solutions on your travels, you will do fine," She said reassuringly. "Especially since I am sure all you girls know a lot about training and exercising and keeping your body fit, since you dances so much."

As Kuni gave Rainer a new order, Astrid fell silent. Silvia too waited patiently, she wasn't very maneuverable when out of water so there was no point in trying to dodge the agile vaporeon, it seemed like it there wouldn't be much innovation in the nearby future when it came to this battle. Rainer bit and Silvia blasted him with her purple breath until he leaped away again.
Then Silvia waited, she had plenty of time as she was sure she could outlast her opponent, the moment he got close enough, she would attack him with her draconic powers once again, at some point she was destined to hit him where it hurt the most.

Kuni blushed a bit from embarrassment. She’d been so focused on the battle and the roar of the crowd; she’d overlooked Astrid’s cane. “Oh dear, my apologies!” She added in haste with a nod of her head. So Astrid managed despite her old age? That was something every trainer could aspire to do, especially since the marching hands of time stopped for no one. “Has your travels been particularly difficult at any time along your trails, then? How did you cope through the difficult parts?” Kuni asked curiously now.

Rainer jumped with excited yips that caused Kuni to turn and smile sweetly at her own Pokemon. Vaporeon had been her traveling companion for a long time now. She appreciated so much about her Pokemon that it was just hard to describe the kind of bond that they had. “Yes. I can trust Rainer to make the best choices in tough situations where he may not hear me or I may not be able to verbally tell him what to do.” She added with a smile. Then, to emphasize what she said, Kuni would add, “Rainer, use your best move, please! We really need to gain the advantage over our opponent!”

They were nearly evenly matched. However, it was a matter of time before Silvia’s previous Focused Energy would come to bite them in the butt. She needed them to focus all of their attention into tanking Astrid’s Pokemon with every bit of energy they could muster. Rainer barked loudly, then got into a defensive stance. He would breathe out a large breath of chilling winds that cut into Silvia’s sides and fins, causing her to slow. However, when Silvia attacked back, the draconic energy would be way too much for Rainer to handle, causing the Vaporeon to run back to her trainer’s side.

“Oh dear.” Kuni blushed, recalling her Pokemon with the click of a button. She walked over to Astrid and held out a small sum of cash. Astrid bested her, so it was only right that the Kimono Girl paid her opponent appropriately. “Thank you Astrid. Both for the battle and for the insightful conversations. I still hope to aspire to be like you when I reach your age. You’re quite the adept trainer, I must say. I hope you’re ready for the next battle.” Kuni giggled with a wink of an eye, before walking back over to her sisters.

"Plenty," Astrid said honestly, "but I am sure younger trainers face problems as well, they are just different. To me its usually the weather or long treks, but having Yakul who can carry me around and a life time of knowledge about how to handle things has been a great help. And I of course do what I can to prepare, which is why I am here as well, in the
hope of getting an audience with you at some point," she explained and gestured to all the Kimono Girls.
This was not the kind of audience she had went for, but perhaps it would help her case afterwards, now she had already spoken with them and wasn't some random old hag banging on their door demanding to see them.
"For me it all comes down to preparation," the old woman repeated.

Silvia buckled down as the icy cold winds blasted over her and bit her sides, she laid her fin close to her body and waited it out. She was a dragon so she could easily handle a bit of cold even if it was her weak spot, if not she would have no place on a dragon master's team, which was their goal.
She eyed the vaporeon and spotted a weakness in his defense which he didn't protect while he was attacking. Her purple breath roared at him a moment later and he ran back to his trainer with his tail between his legs.
She roared victoriously and shook her back fin so it glimmered in the dim light. Her eyes tore into Kumi as the girl walked past her and straight to Astrid, she snorted displeased, where were her recognition? She had been the one who had done all the hard work!

"Thank you, I am sure my team will be ready," the old woman said as he accepted the money. And frowned when she saw the glare Silvia sent Kumi as the girl walked back to her sisters.
"You did great Silvia, just as I know you would," Astrid praised the kingdra, who snorted but looked pleased. Astrid waited but the kingdra didn't look like she planned on going anywhere, staring down the girls challengingly like she wanted to take them all down on her own. Astrid rubbed her arm a bit as she thought, how to avoid this turning into a scene.
"Come here and join me!" She said encouragingly, "It's their place and their rules, one battle per pokemon," she reminded and Silvia sighed and looked away. "I would like to have your support," Astrid said gently and Silvia looked back at her dryly but then made her way ungraceful to her trainer's side.
"Thank you," Astrid said gently and placed a hand on Silvia's scaled side, and thought to herself it was good she wasn't going to keep being her trainer, that would be more than she could handle. The dragon became more and more proud.

"If they have the original eeveelutions, flareon would be one of them and could be a problem," Astrid mumbled and then made her decision, a huge big beaked bird took the stage a moment later. Pia looked around and looked displeased at the low ceiling which would hinder her flight. She eyes the gathered girls in front of her with suspicion.
"We have been challenged to a battle, one on one, Silvia did really well and won the first battle," Astrid explained and Pia turned to look proudly back at the kingdra, who blinked surprised and then blushed.
"We do not know what you will be facing, other than it will be an evolution of eevee and that Silvia faced off against Vaporeon."
Pia turned back to look challenging at each of the girls, seeing who dared stepping forward to battle her, slowly she spread her wings wide to look big and imposing. The moment she had her opponent, she would let out a deafening scream.

Angel girl in a cold dark world.

The musical tempo changed, with somber melodies that drifted out around the battlefield and filled the air. A beautiful black haired woman similar in looks to her sister clad in thick, black kimono stepped out from the group and nodded with a gentle smile. She reached inside of her long sleeves and pulled out a small red-and-white ball as she stood before Astrid. “Greetings, Astrid. You put on a wonderful display with my sister, Kuni.” The girl spoke gently, and just loud enough to hear over the raucous crowd and flowing music.

She clicked the button in the center of the ball and called forth a long, limber mammal whose features seemed somewhere between canid and feline. He had long, puffy triangular ears and long, slender legs, with a single thick, fluffy tail. In various spots along his brilliantly black coat were bright yellow rings that would glow brightly as strange energy pulsated through his form. “I’ll be using my trusty companion, Tamao.” She nodded to her beautiful Umbreon, who lowered himself into a battle ready stance and growled excitedly.

“Tamao, use Confuse Ray to start.” She placed one hand over her mouth and giggled as Tamao straightened himself back up. “I firmly believe the right set up in a battle makes all the difference. I’ve never found brute force alone to be the fondest way to try to win in life.” Zuki added thoughtfully with a raise of an eyebrow in Astrid’s direction. Then, as though she’d just realized it, she added, “I’m Zuki, by the way!” Tamao released several strange ghostly rays from his body, which caused Pai to instantly become confused. She struggled through her confusion and squawled at the top of her lungs. Tamao's ears dropped at the sides of his head as he tried to shield his ears from the horrible sounds that clawed their way into his mind.

Astrid nodded courtly to Zuki, she tried to answer her greeting but the music and the crowd drowned out her thin voice and she quickly realized it herself. She made a half apologetic, half embarrassed shrug and smile and waited to see what eeveelution would appear, although the colors of Zuki's kimono should have been a dead giveaway.

"Oh my goodness, that can give her some trouble," Astrid said worried when umbreaon not only turned out to be faster on his feet than Pia, but also managed to hit her with some wellknown dancing lights, which made the toucannon sway and stumble as the world began to spin around.
"Dra!" Silvia shouted and Pia shook her head in an attempt to clear it. Silvia called out again and Pia screeched and Astrid smacked her hands against her ears as this was much more in all directions than usual. Pia was going to be sure she hit her opponent with this, no matter what.

"Pia, catch!" Astrid's weak voice called out and her worries that they wouldn't get through to her pokemon was put down as Pia turned her head and opened her beak. It was an easy throw, even for Astrid as the lum berry was light and Pia's beak very big, the toucannon chomped down on the juicy snack and her head would clear up.

"A good trick, but it won't last long," Pia said to Tamao and her beak began to slowly warm up, "do you have any other trick up your sleeve? Do you dare to get anywhere near close me?" she challenged making Silvia groan, "that will just make him avoid you now!"

"Having a tactic and a set up is a very good idea, I can see that is what Pia is working on as well. Screech is a favorite of ours, as you can see. How many plans have you spoiled by confusing their pokemon?" She shouted with a smile and didn't doubt it was many, which she would love to hear about.

"Setting up, playing tricks and outlasting foes. Such is what umbreon is known for. Sometimes brute force is not what brings the mighty to their knees, but a whisper in the ear or a few drops in a drink...or perhaps a smile from a lovely woman for who their heart is weak." Zuki said with a slight smile. "Now that they are befuddled, cast your foe in darkness, my dear." As a lum berry was thrown to Pia to chomp down, Tamao opened his mouth and an orb of blistering shadow formed. It writhed like a ball of seething serpents before launching forth and expanding into a ring of darkness that slammed into the toucan. 

A hard, but tolerable blow.

"Hm. I see. You seek to ruin our fun, hm~? What good is a trick if nobody falls for it? Confuse ray once more!" And before their foe could launch their assault, there was that sparkling light again that left Pia dizzy and disoriented. But surely it could be fought through? Pia prepared an attack and...stumbled. That beak blast was launched into the stage and the force from the powerful attack recoiled back up into Pia's face, knocking the toucannon backwards. 

"Oh my, that would have hurt if it hit."

"I cannot agree more and I can see I still have a lot to learn," Astrid said dryly as she saw how the battle played out, it was clear why the Kimono Sisters were highly respected battlers. The old woman sighed and hid her face in a hand as Pia went straight back to be confused again, loosing her balance and somehow managed to get her blast to recoil, sending her stumbling back. She looked anything but intimidating and experienced now.
"You surely know how to paint the dark sides of dark pokemon, do you prefer people seeing them as tricky and dangerous?" she asked the dark eeveelution trainer.

"I told you so! Come on Pia, pull yourself together! I know you can!" Silvia shouted encouragingly from the sideline, watching anxiously. She couldn't bear the thought of her respected mentor losing a battle like this, so humiliating and undignified, especially after she herself had won hers.
"Try listen for your opponent!" she suggested and Pia shook her head annoyed, "I can't concentrate! It's not my sight which is wrong," the toucannon grumbled and Silvia ducked her head a bit.

Astrid thought hard and long, Pia would surely get confused again the moment it lifted and she didn't really have anything she could do to avoid it. She could easily if she had been able to switch pokemon but that was not an option here.
"Which means we are down to pure strength and just need to outlast it," Astrid said grimly.
"You heard that, right?! You are tough, you can get through this!" Silvia called out while Pia spread her wings slightly as she wobbled and tried to keep her balance.
"Can you come to me Pia?" Astrid called out gently and the toucannon made it unsteadily to her trainer. The old woman sprayed some healing on the worst spots and patted her beak. "I am sorry I have not planned for this, I am afraid you are in for a long haul," she said gently and the toucannon's look was unreadable.

Pia turned back to the umbreon, she was beginning to think a bit more clear but what Zuki had said made her wary, seemed like the pair was very skilled in status conditions and turning others strengths against them. She decided to change tactic a bit.
"The quiet type you are, alright, I'll leave you to concentrate on the battle then," Pia said stoically as Tamao hadn't reacted on her words before, but granted with how confused she had been it would have been limited how much she could have conversed.

"Tricky and dangerous? Are tricks not in themselves delightful? Is danger not inherently thrilling? What is the allure of mystery if not for how it makes the heart race and the mind turn itself into knots, leaving us helpless in its thrall?" She giggled lightly. "Dark-type pokemon are beautiful and wonderful, and my Tamao is the picture of a new moon night and the heart of my heart. When one accepts all that the night and darkness entails...it no longer feels quite so scary...but rather...invigorating."

She fluttered her fan, "My beloved, go, use dark pulse again!"

As soon as Pia gulped down the potion, another two pulses of shadow slammed into her. The toucannon was staggered and dazed, but held on.

The umbreon nodded once at his still standing foe.

Why waste words? Their humans were talking enough for the both of them.

However, perhaps he should have offered a few in distraction, as Pia followed up with a sudden and startling assault. Rocks. The bird could fire ROCKS out of her beak. The umbreon tried his best to dodge, but he wasn't as swift as a jolteon or espeon. He couldn't avoid the barrage and was hit. Hard. Numerous times. He slid back on the stage, panting, but upright.

It seemed like Pia's confusion had cleared. For now.

"They are for you," Astrid chuckled, "but there is also a reason why there are so much superstition around some type of pokemon as dark types. It can be tricky though since it is often a part of their nature, and people forgets it is the same with many other pokemon which they prefer." She mused out loud.
"Not everyone likes dangers, or the mystery, especially if they do not understand it, or feel helpless and stuck in the situation," she explained somberly and looked dryly at the umbreon. "I can tell you that even though I am not usually afraid of the dark, it is still unsettling to be on the receiving end in this battle, and feeling helpless against it. What is your suggestions for me in that?" she asked tiredly.
Astrid wondered how she would have been doing if she had been doing like younger trainers and not left the decisions to Pia, now she was mostly just a spectator who could lend a helping hand, instead of standing with the sole responsibility.

Pia liked to converse during battles, it showed an excess of energy and more than once she had either learned something that could help her, or had tricked her opponent into making errors. This umbreon was a trickster but without words.
She staggered under the pressure of the dark pulses and sent an annoying thought at the low ceiling which kept her earthbound. If she had been able to soar freely this would have been easier, but of course she had often wished for a proper challenge and she certainly had gotten one now.

The rocks hit their mark and as Pia's head finally cleared, she was sure that was the way to go. It had clearly taken Tamao by surprise and there were no need for him to get close to her for her to get the full effect.
She spread her feet a bit to get a better footing and opened her beak again to send a barrage of rocks at the dark type.
