Batta huffed with a heavy scowl as he watched the rat scamper off through the thick grasses that surrounded the area. It was an arduous fight. One that swelled in his chest and made him feel different, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. The wild creature was rather delusional, immediately lunging for the offensive over a silly little mistake on Batta’s part. His lungs burned with pain that accompanied the same pain surging through every inch of his body. There were deep gnashes along his sides and legs. Scars marking the battle he’d previously had with the wild rodent, though they would heal if given enough time.

A strange light surrounded him and caused the little grasshopper to bug out. He jumped up high into the air and lunged through the grass in different directions. “Get it off! Get it off of me! Help! Mayday! I’m dying! I’m dying! I’m too young to die! Please, someone, save me!” Batta screeched at the top of his lungs, rolling and flailing about in the tall grasses. Though what was happening to the small grasshopper was far from death itself. As the light washed over him, it pushed him upright on his back two feet. His head grew and stretched, with the two notches on his head pushing out two long antennae.

Kumaneko shook her head with a short, gruff huff. Of course the little cretin was being overly dramatic about the whole ordeal. She’d never evolved either, but she witnessed some of her friends evolutions along their journey through the Johto region. Was it painful? Maybe. Batta definitely looked like he was in the worst pain of his life, flailing about in the tall grasses as his body expanded and changed into a larger and more imposing grasshopper. Locus, really? Hmm. “You’re not dying.” She huffed gruffly, stomping her way through the grass to peer down at her friend’s wild antics. Some other Pokemon were snickering in the distance, obviously thinking the whole ordeal was hilarious. “Come on. Get up. That’s no way to behave.” Kumaneko held one clawed paw out to help her friend up.

Mishu continuously scribbled in her journal, detailing the events of Batta’s battle and subsequent evolution. It was a miraculous thing to witness! It marveled her, causing her to nod silently to herself as she noted the key difference in the two Pokemon. Something about Batta seemed different too. Using her Pokedex to scan the new Pokemon, Mishu learned that her little friend had also gained a secondary typing. “Lokix the dual Bug-and-Dark type Grasshopper Pokemon. It uses its folded legs during all out battles in Showdown Mode, though doing so places a huge burden on its body.” This mode was very taxing on the body? This was something she would want to study in greater detail later on, if the chance to ever presented itself.

“I’m proud of you, Batta.” Mishu walked over to her still freaking out grasshopper, who used Kumaneko’s free hand to help himself up onto his two feet. He stared thoughtfully at his trainer as he came to terms with his new evolution. She was proud? Of the way that rat thrashed him mercilessly whilst all he did was try to explain the situation more clearly and hope it would understand? And it did not. What there to be proud of? “I think this new look suits you well. What do you think?” Mishu pulled out a small handheld mirror and allowed Batta to get a better look of himself. He gently touched the reflective image and sighed with a soft smile.

“I didn’t die?” Kumaneko rolled her eyes. Really? Still? “No, you didn’t die.” She growled underneath her voice. Ziggy crawled up next to them and giggled. “You just evolved. Like I did a while back.” He gestured to his long, lanky form. “Yours isn’t as dramatic as mine was, though. I wonder what Kumaneko’s will be like?” He hummed with a thoughtful glance thrown in the little bear’s direction. Her narrowed her eyes but allowed herself to don a wide smile. “It’ll be the absolute best you’ve ever seen. Just you wait!” She scoffed with a smirk, causing the others to laugh.

A small child crawled out of the grass on his hands and knees with tears staining the sides of his face.Mishu gasped, worried that he was badly hurt and rushed over to the child's side. "Are you ok?!" Her voice cracked as she almost screamed in alarm. She reached one hand out to the young child for support, who shook his head and yelled incoherent babble at the top of his lungs. He slapped her hand with one of his, causing Mishu to jerk her hand back and rub it softly where the child slapped her and sighed. "I'm not going to hurt you. Where is your mother?" She asked, though the words fell on deaf ears.

Could he not understand her? Perhaps there was a language barrier that she wasn't aware of? She hardly dealt with babies or toddlers, though she did spend most of her time trying to educate people of all ages against the harsh stereotypes often associated with Dark Types. Thankfully, the young toddler didn't look too hurt, just terrified and possibly lost. He babbled on, just syllables strung together with no real rhyme or reason. "Chabutre blefurti creemoshitu momonosho!" What did that mean? It didn't sound like any of the other languages she'd vaguely encountered on her trips around the different regions, before settling in Johto. It also didn't quite sound like baby babble, either.

Sakanae hopped over and puffed herself up with a snarl. "You better leave my trainer alone! Do you hear me? Your disguise isn't working on me! I don't know what type of Pokémon looks like a human, but I know you're a Pokémon!" Sakanae barked at the small child. She lunged, attempting to strike the small child with her sharp fangs. Poison dripped down her long fangs as she moved in swiftly, hoping to land her mark. Mishu pressed her hands to her face in alarm and immediately scooped Sakanae up in her hands. "Sakanae, no!" She snapped. What got into her bitey fish lately? Even if she was recently hatched, why was she going out of her way to attack a human child? "You should never attack a person! Especially a child that hasn't done anything to you." She warned her Pokémon. Sakanae couldn't believe what she was hearing, though?! Did her trainer not want Sakanae to protect her?! That made no sense at all! She huffed and tried to wriggle out of Mishu's hands.

The small child laughed. It was amusing to see this trainer immediately scolding her fish as onlookers began to swarm around them. Mothers clung to their children in a tight embrace and narrowed their eyes in disapproving judgement. Some fished out their phones and readied their fingertips should they need to hurry and call professionals on the scene to make sure the child would be safe. “You really shouldn’t bring a dangerous fish like that around here, you know!” One of the parents catcalled from a safe distance, placing a small female child behind her protectively. The young brunette eight year old poked her head around her mother’s long legs and stared at Mishu and Sakanae curiously with wide, almost black, brown eyes. “Mother, why would someone bring such a mean Pokemon?” She asked softly, trying to understand.

“Sakanae is a young Pokemon. Carvanha are generally not dangerous outside of their groups in the wild, as they only act out to maintain their territory.” Mishu corrected. She winced from Sakanae’s rough skin as it dug into the soft flesh of her fingertips and palms. “However, you’re correct in one thing. She is my responsibility. As such, I should have been more mindful. I am terribly sorry about this.” She added in quickly. The mother shook her head, stomping one foot down on the grassy ground and pointing a finger firmly in Mishu’s direction. “That is no excuse! That child could have been seriously hurt! What then? What would you have done then?!” The mother demanded.

Mishu…sighed. What would she have done? Unbeknownst to her, the laughing child’s body began to glow with a strange light. Immediately, it shaped itself into a strange looking piranha with large, sharp teeth. Bright yellow fins jutted out of a red-and-white body that splashed seemingly in air and chomped at anything nearby. “I’m just like you now, Carvanha! We should go on the hunt sometime!” Sakanae’s eyes narrowed on her newfound foe. Was it mocking her now that she’d gotten in trouble for defending her trainer from the assaulter?! Would it take glee in the mischief-making it seemed to be unleashing within the crowd at large?! She couldn’t stand idly by and struggled in Mishu’s arm. “Oww! Sakanae, calm down! You have really rough skin, you know.” Mishu called, trying her best to keep a firm grip on the wily fish.

Sakanar growled. “You’re lucky she stopped me before I could teach you a proper lesson!” She huffed angrily, stilling herself. The last thing she wanted to do was to hurt Mishu. Why couldn’t the avid Dark Type lover and aspiring scientist see what Sakanae was trying to do? “Everyone, look! That wasn’t a child!” Another person groaned loudly with a shake of his head before turning away to stalk off towards the city in the distance. “It was just a stupid ditto playing tricks again! They seem to love to do this a lot!” Mishu turned with a loud gasp, dropping Sakanae on the ground, who rolled around temporarily stunned and shook herself to rid herself of the dirt that gathered on her scales.

“Here, let me help you, Sakanae.” Batta hopped out in front of the young fish and stretched his legs. He studied the transforming opponent carefully and waited to see what this once-a-child and now-a-fish creature would do next. Would it now take on the form of Lokix? It was hard to determine but might affect Batta’s next moves. Then the black-and-blue grasshopper would jump up high into the air and lunge at the now-a-fish creature with a loud cry. “Prepare to learn a lesson about why being means doesn’t pay.” Batta stated firmly, attempting to slam into the now-a-fish’s side.

The battle wrapped up nearly as swiftly as it started. While Sakanae’s efforts to save her trainer were misread, Batta jumped into the middle of the fray and insisted on his team member’s innocence. Mishu hummed softly to herself, walking over to the edge of the water to place Sakanae within it, then turned back to the gathering crowd who all gasped in shock at what transpired. Even she didn’t believe in her bity fish, whose history – while new for herself specifically – held many strange and wondrous tales around her ancestry. “I’m so sorry I didn’t trust in you, girl. Can you ever forgive me?” She asked Sakanae in earnest just before turning to face the crowd of onlookers once more.

Sakanae snorted. It wasn’t HER problem that they immediately viewed her as this dangerous creature! She hatched as a Carvanha, nothing more or less. And while she would never ask to change places with a Pokemon whose appearance was more beloved for its cute and cuddly stature, she couldn’t help but notice the prejudice that arose in humans and how they easily justified their narrowed mindsets for sometimes the most arbitrary reasons. “I trust in you as my trainer and owner.” Sakanae gurgled with a shake of her head. “Can’t you trust in me as your Pokemon? Or are the conditions of my birth and ignorant knowledge of the world around me that persevered?” She snapped firmly.

Batta hopped over to the water’s edge and placed himself down on the last blade of grass the grew semi-close. “They don’t understand.” He tried to reason with his friend in a soft sigh. “They don’t even understand how their ignorance causes others pain. Mishu is the only one that tries to change that narrative – within herself and others – though. Please be patient.” Sakanae splashed water at Batta, causing the dark grew grasshopper to leap up high into the air and flail backwards. “Why is it MY job to be patient with THEM for the pain that they cause ME?! Shouldn’t it be THEIR job to be patient with ME while I work through this PAIN?!” She snapped angrily.

Mishu walked over to the gathering crowd whilst her two Pokemon continued to chat away about whose social toll it was to do most of the work and how that work should be adequately divided. “My fish was defending me from a Pokemon playing tricks.” Many of the adults still clutching their kids begrudgingly nodded their heads with a wary glance cast in Sakanae’s direction. “Even I didn’t trust her like I should have, which is a fault of myself as a trainer and an educator. I’ve come to Johto – the birthplace of Dark Types by many researchers’ understandings – to better learn about them and dispel the myths that surround them.” She continued, glancing down at the wide-eyed, messy haired children clinging to their mothers’ legs. “I hope this is a lesson for all not to make assumptions and react on those assumptions alone. By doing so, we can cause harm to those we care about most. Sometimes, irreparable harm.” She urged the crowd.

Some weren’t bought into the act. They carried conversations though shushed whispers. “It did look like a kid.” While others nodded with a sharp and narrowed glance glaring at Mishu entirely. “And what if it had actually been a child?! How can SHE be trusted if she can’t control her beasts?!” While another chimed in. “That’s because Carvanha are bloodthirsty monsters in the water! Most Dark Types are evil creatures that steal your stuff, or your souls!” Mishu sighed, slumping her shoulders with a shake of her head. “I can hear you, you know. Everything you’re saying is precisely why I’m here. I understand you may not believe what I am saying or trust in my capabilities, but I will work hard to show you why the things we were once taught aren’t always the gospel truths we believe them to be.” She insisted. She would then lead the crowd towards a small picnic area, where she continued her lecture and answered many questions both about her type specialty and her own Pokemon for the crowd, no matter how rude the questions were.
