Khalani Akamai breathed in the fresh air of New Bark Town, staring straight up at the cloudless sky. So much freedom. And all the time in the world to use it. He felt the bright sun's heat beaming upon his tanned skin. Although it was a bit colder than he was used to, this weather still reminded him of home. And, of course, the entire reason why he was here. He needed to catch strong Pokemon, grow as a trainer, and enter championships to win money for his family back on Melemele island. He was their hope. Hope to get their land back. And it wasn't just land to the islanders. It was a testament to how far their bloodline had come, and how far it would go on still. This financial situation was just a little bump in the road, and Khalani would be the one to fix it. "Squirtle?" came a questioning croak from the dirt path. Khalani looked to his feet, and to the water-type Pokemon standing there, head tilted. "Ah, just absorbing the moment, Ua. Seven years late, my Pokemon adventure finally begins!" "Squirtle!" came the excited shout. The islander chuckled. He could see that Ua was as ecstatic for the new journey as the trainer. Incredible, given that Khalani had just received Ua an hour or so ago. This Pokemon must form bonds quickly. So far, the new trainer could tell that Squirtle was a loyal starter. This one at least.
"Well, ready to get going?" Khalani asked, pointing off to Route 29.
Ua nodded rapidly. "Well, here we go!"

It was a wonderful day, one of the first real spring days after a long winter and the trees and bushes were full of new green leaves. That might not be so common back on Alola, now it was a much more tropical area. The trees attracted plenty of wild pokemon who were ready to gorge themselves after a winter of scarcity, and Khalani and Ua didn't have to walk far before they found a tree which was not only green, but also rather pink. It was full of wurmples who were ravenously stripping it for leaves by gobbling them all down. Suddenly something white splattered out on the ground in front of them, a second would follow shortly after and tie Khalani's legs together. "Stay back! I'm armed and not afraid to use it!" A little voice from the tree squeaked, it was one of the wurmples and it looked to be nothing out of the ordinary, other than it was the only one not eating. "This tree is not big for both of us!" It declared and one of the other wurmples sent it annoyed look before it grumbled to another wurmple at its side: "it has been like that since they visit the human nest and saw that tele-see-thingy."The first worm shot a string shot at a branch above it and used it to elegantly swing itself down to the ground, not much unlike Tarzan. Well down on the ground it crawled forward to face the strangers, "I'm the great protector of this place, state your business and prove you are worthy of staying!" It declared and grinned, looking expectantly at them. Wurmple [Lv 6] is challenging you to a battle! Weather will be Clear Skies (clear) Tcg7pTc7p_1-421-42

The two hadn't walked for long before they encountered their first wild Pokemon. As Khalani walked down the path, whistling a famous Alolan tune, something caught his eye to the left of the road. He turned to find a tree filled with Wurmple, who were all chowing down on the newly sprouted leaves.
But before he could admire the beauty of it all, a white splotch appeared on the ground before him. Khalani frowned, glancing down to examine it. A second later, another splatter rained down onto his shoes. "What..." he wondered aloud. Trying to move his feet, he found himself glued to the road. The trainer looked up at the tree again just in time to see one Wurmple swinging down to the road as if to block him from moving ahead.
The Wurmple squeaked and twittered, seeming adamant on not letting the trainer pass. It crawled forward, its eyes narrowing. Ua stepped forward, shouting at the wild Pokemon. "Squirtle, squirtle! Squirtle!" It glanced back at Khalani, a gleam in its eye. This Wurmple was... challenging him? After a moment of thought, Khalani grinned widely and clenched a fist. "Let's do this, Ua! This Wurmple will be my first catch. Go, use Tackle!" Khalani said, his heart pounding.
His first Pokemon battle. In the Johto region, with a Squirtle by his side, fighting a Wurmple on Route 29. Just one milestone on the journey for his family. He'd have to write back home about this one.

Wurmple scoffed at Khalani’s words. It was a wild and free Wurmple who led its people to new lands yet to be discovered by its kind. They managed to find the best berry bushes and chase away the scariest birds. Sure, there had been some casualties here and there, but even the wild Wurmple itself refused to evolve to ensure that it could do what it does best as a leader of the bravest Wurmple Johto had ever known! “I won’t be some common pet like you!” Wurmple warned. Au rushed her opponent and slammed her thick skull against the fuchsia hued caterpillar. Wurmple squeaked loudly from the pain, falling back through bright emerald blades of grass. Small bruises etched across its delicate flesh, turning the reddish-pink spots into almost dark crimson hues. “Oh, that really hurt. Maybe you’re worthy after all…watch out!” Wurmple chuckled, lunging from the thick green grass and slamming into Au’s side with a powerful punch. They tumbled about in the wildflowers, kicking grass and petals up in a flurry around them. It hadn’t met a challenge quite like Au in a long time. Especially since the great Spearow Retreat of last summer, Wurmple doubted its would ever meet a match quite as strong as it. “Why would you want to capture a wild Pokemon, anyways? Aren’t there enough trained and pampered pets for your trainer to exchange with others? Most of us love our lives just the way they are!” Wurmple insisted, trying to understand their logic. Ua dashed forward, slamming straight into the wild Wurmple. Khalani's grin widened as he congratulated his Pokemon. "That's it, Ua! You've got this," he said. The Wurmple disappeared into the grass for a moment before rising again, bruised and battered. Khalani certainly didn't enjoy seeing injured Pokemon, but that didn't mean he'd shy away from a battle! Especially if it was to catch a Pokemon.
Unbeknownst to the human, the two creatures were conversing with each other. "Pet? You don't understand. Khalani doesn't see me as inferior. He wants to become a better trainer along with his Pokemon. He gets stronger as we get stronger. Of course...there isn't much of a 'we' right now. You could be the first addition to -"
Ua didn't get to finish his sentence, as the Wurmple slammed into him with a Tackle.
There was a sharp intake of air from Khalani as he watched his Pokemon stumble backwards. Despite their battle, it seemed the Pokemon were still talking. Maybe Ua was trying to convince the Wurmple to join his team.
Squirtle's conversation was becoming heated, the trainer could tell. "Well, besides the thrill of it for the humans, they usually want to find rare Pokemon. In Khalani's case, I suppose befriending and catching Pokemon in the wild could be fun and give him a sense of acheivement. It's also beneficial for his goals. Who knows what kind of strength could be found or nurtured in a Pokemon until it is caught and has bonded with its trainer. Besides, if you don't want to be caught, you should know that most of the time, the wild Pokemon that stay docile and shy away from trainers don't get caught. If you like your life like it is, then you could have stayed up on that tree chowing down, and you'd never be caught," Squirtle explained.
Meanwhile, Khalani looked on, eyes narrowed in thought, wondering what they could possibly be saying. But now, it looked like the conversation was over, and Ua was lowering himself to the ground in a combat stance. Time to take the advantage. It would be wise to give himself an advantage now, so the rest of the battle would be easy. Tail Whip would do it. Lowering the Wurmple's defense would make whittling down its fighting spirit easier. "Alright, Ua, use Tail Whip! Let's take the advantage."

The wurmple smiled confidently but waited answering until they had both tackled the other, then its confidence wavered a bit. "You sure? How long have you known each other? And aren't that what pokemon with humans do? Laze around indoors doing nothing but being petted and pampered?" It teased, it didn't quite sound like mocking, Au had at least shown he knew how to tackle. It took some time to look at Khalani, it didn't really look impressed. "Nurtured, you're saying that wild pokemon are weak?" It challenged as it stared at Au, "what do you think a wild pokemon is doing? Any clue about how we get tested all the time and how much it demands? You don't need to be with a human to grow stronger, what kind of nonsense is that," it scoffed and turned to its kin in the trees, "did you hear that? This squirtle thinks we can evolve and be strong if we're with a human, what do you think all our flying parents thinks of that?"It got a few dismissive remarks said from mouths full of food. The wurmple sighed and deflated a bit. "I got them through to here from our old barren land, I lead them against the spearows and this is how they show their gratefulness? Why do I even bother," it said dryly. It turned back to Au, just as the squirtle waved his tail around, making the wurmple shook its head over the strange situation it was in. "So being caught is suddenly my fault, how convenient, just as it would be my fault if I happened to not spot the spearow who eats me?" The wurmple said dryly, "I guess that's how the world is when it's ruled by hunters," it added more grimly, and was quiet for a bit as it studied Au for a bit. "You're too fast," it decided and with that Au got covered in the sticky thread like Khalani's shoes earlier, had he gotten himself unstuck yet? "Now, plenty of time to chitchat," the wurmple said and looked pleased with itself, as if they hadn't already had all that time. Had this been a battle between wild pokemon there wouldn't have been time for that, it would have been nothing but instinct and reactions, a fight full of anger and perhaps even about life or death. Wurmple glanced again at Khalani, "so why have you chosen to follow the human? What has he done to prove to you, you should follow all his orders? What do you gain from it?" It asked, at least it was open minded. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Wurmple LV 6 HP 83% [19/23]
