There was a lot of work to be done and sometimes it felt like she didn’t have enough hands. What she didn’t realize was that there was a large network of Johto’s estates and that the owners were all in communication with each other. Being a relatively new estate owner, she did not personally know any of the other people, but they all seemed nice enough. They also had the ability to post wanted ads and describe areas where they needed help. One of the owners, named Adrian, had apparently inherited a very run down ranch and was seeking help in a few different ways with all of the chores and managing the property. It seemed like some of the chores would also help raise some of her Pokemon, which was fortunate because as her collection grew, she was rotating a lot more so that the younger ones could get stronger. When the last of her customers had finished up with their sessions, she locked up and headed out, on her way towards the farmlands portion of the region. It would take her a little while to get there, but the travel was the best part for her. She loved seeing the region, considering how different the sections of it were. The view was so pretty as she approached the ranch, being able to see some of the sections, even at a distance. One of the things that stood out to her was a beautiful looking (from her point of view) pier, where she would have an opportunity to try out her new fishing rod (old as it may be). Crossing through the front gate of the ranch, which had been conveniently left open, she headed further in. A large board was set up with some of the tasks that needed doing and she was happy to see that one of them was getting rid of some Oddish. There was also a listing for something involving a Mareep, and helping out at the pier she had seen. Quite a lot to do, indeed. She took a quick picture of the board as a reference point for later, and continued walking. The main house structure was in her view now, and she wondered if Adrian was here. Would she be bothering him? She didn’t think so since he was requesting help, but she didn’t want to be too forward either. Inherited was a strong word for how Adrian acquired the ranch. He bought it at a land auction sale for dirt cheap and in terrible condition. He had been making progress and improvements. As Caitlin trekked past the gate, she would see that the pathway that was once a blur of weeds was a little more defined, some fresh gravel tossed onto the ground to keep greenery from sprouting up. The fence was also freshly painted with signs of repair. And the house also clearly had been restored some. Boards replaced and stained, railings nailed down and painted and the brick was washed and freed of years of filth. There was the sparkle of care, even if there was much, much more work to do.

The pasture was a mess. He cleared out a circle around the main part of the property and had set up a little berry garden that was fenced in...a very handmade fashion. It looked like he was fighting some unspoken war with some unknown entity given the mishmash of methods used to fence it off from the rest of the pasture. But beyond that, the grasses were wild and tall, obscuring much of what roamed the property. 

Lounging on the porch and in the tended grasses were pokemon, but they had the look of trainer caught rather than native. Some feline pokemon basked in the sun. A yamper pestered a houndour, a ball in its mouth, clearly looking to play. A vespiquen loomed tall over a small swarm of insects, guarding a dense patch of wildflowers. And she would be able to hear bleating and moo'ing from livestock type pokemon behind the house.

Quaint.

If she looked at the picture closer, she'd see that there was an invitation for trainers to come inside to rest if he was home. Apparently he offered room and board for people who assisted him with the property. Speaking of said owner...

"Oi, where did that mudbray run off to?" he rounded the house, not noticing Caitlin as he checked the well-secured garden. 

At that same time, there was an alarmed braying and Caitlin would see a baby mudbray with its ears laid flat, trying to back away from a far too curious oddish, who kept waddling closer.

Adrian must have been very good at exploring and catching Pokemon to have types that weren’t really native to the land here. The sudden appearance of the owner caught Caitlin off guard and she almost recovered enough to greet him when he powered past, looking for a Pokemon of some kind. Though he said the name, she didn’t recognize the species name and just followed his movement with her eyes and a confused expression on her face. Shrugging her shoulders and deciding that she would just talk to him later, she stopped moving forward when an alarmed Pokemon call rang out. Turning her head in the direction that she thought it came from, she saw two Pokemon interacting, but one of them was definitely not happy about being approached. She didn’t know what she was dealing with, but her Poke dex was able to help her out. ”Mudbray, the donkey Pokemon. A ground type. This Pokemon covers itself in mud that it has regurgitated. The mud won’t dry out even if it's exposed in the sun for a long time. Though a slow walker, Mudbray is plenty strong. Its pace doesn’t change even when it's loaded with fifty times its own body weight,” Wow, what a strong Pokemon. No wonder Adrian would have one of those on the ranch. Turning her arm, the Dex pinged on the Oddish. ”Oddish, the weed Pokemon. A grass and poison type. Its scientific name is Oddium wanderus. It is said to cover distances as far as 1,000 feet when night falls, walking on its two roots. When it is woken by moonlight, it wanders about. During the day, it stays underground.” So that was why the Mudbray was scared, the grass type was coming at it. But it was the daytime, shouldn’t the Oddish be resting? Maybe something else was keeping it awake. It didn’t matter, though, because the Mudbray was calling for help. Taking a poke ball out of her pocket, Caitlin took a few steps forward before tossing the ball into the air. Azazel, her Charmeleon, appeared in a flash of light. The fire lizard took in the scene, blowing smoke from his nose. “Azzie, use Ember attack, defend the Mudbray!” Fire collected in the lizard’s mouth for a second before he fired a volley of burning embers, attempting to draw the Oddish’s focus to him instead of the younger equine Pokemon. The oddish was very distracted by the mudbray, who was making alarmed, upset braying sounds as she backed up, stumbling deeper into the tall grass to avoid being poked at. There was a very good reason why this young pokemon wasn't initiating a battle to get it to go away, as the oddish was much, much higher level and had a type advantage. That made it very, very scary. Caitlin, however, swooped in right on time! The charmeleon's ember seared into the plant and made it flail in alarm, leaves quite suddenly alight! The walking onion flailed a bit, snuffing the flames, filling the air with a sickly sweet scent as it did so. In its distress, it had dispersed an aroma into the area to hopefully calm and sedate those that smelled it.

This exchange also allowed for the mudbray to flee, scampering back towards the house and her trainer.

Adrian saw the battle start and reached out for the mudbray, who launched herself at his legs for comfort. He pet her neck, "It's okay. You're okay. Looks like that trainer has the scary oddish handled."

With the Oddish’s attention diverted, the young Mudbray had an opportunity to run away, right to its trainer. Caitlin figured that was Adrian, but now that she was in an active battle, she would think about that more later. Azazel growled, unhappy that his attack didn’t hurt the weed Pokemon more. Flexing his claws, his nostrils twitched as the sweet scent hung lazily in the air. It smelled good and fortunately it did not have any direct negative effects. Caitlin could tell that the fire lizard was enjoying the scent and she was worried that he wasn’t focusing enough. ”Azazel, use Dragon Breath!” she called. Taking a deep breath, the Charmeleon drew from deep within his chest and brought forth a greenish breath of dragon energy, blowing it forward towards the Oddish. After the first burst of breath, the teenage fire Pokemon would take a cleansing breath, before reaching deep again and blowing it out a second time. Two dragon breaths is indeed enough. The teenaged fire-type was met by another sweet scent as the oddish tried to placate the charmeleon, but alas, it was not enough. Those flames burned hot and true and scoured the oddish right down to the bulb. Tears welled up in its eyes as it fled, leaves charred and smoking, the lingering wisps of blue dragon fire clinging to its fronds. That left Caitlin with Adrian, who watched her with a curious cock of his head.

He looked a bit rumpled and had dirt smudged on his face. His clothes were well-worn and were smudged up, like he had been doing yard work or house repair of some kind when he lost track of a certain mudbray and went searching for her. Absently, he pat the troublemaking pokemon on the head, reassuring her.

"You're new," he observed, approaching when the oddish fled. "Here to help out or just poke around?" He thumbed at the help board. His voice was low and gruff, though any attempts at being intimidating were thwarted by the cuddles the mudbray was bestowing upon his legs, clearly very fond of her trainer.

Maybe it wasn’t trying to hurt the Mudbray afterall? Regardless of the wild Pokemon’s intentions, which they would never truly know, the situation was now over. The fire lizard walked over to Caitlin and she rubbed his head crest, praising him for a strong battle. Opening his mouth, his teeth began to glow with fire energy, showing off that he had a new attack that he could use. ”You’re growing up very quickly. You’ll be a Charizard before you know it.” The Charmeleon puffed his chest out, which made Caitlin giggle. Checking her poke dex, she saw that his new attack was Fire Fang, and it seemed that he would use his fire that way, instead of creating ember pieces. She tapped a finger on her chin, before deciding that she could take a closer look at this later on. Caitlin returned the teenager to his poke ball and saw that the man was now approaching her. Would he be mad that she trespassed? It seemed like the estate was open for visitors. She nodded to his quick observation. ”I came here to help. I saw your posted messages about needing some help around here, since there are so many tasks. Recently, I opened an estate of my own and now I’m starting to see the pure amount of work that goes into running it smoothly. I figured that anyone else might need a hand too. So I’m at your disposal, point me in a direction and I’ll do my best.” she said with a smile. He seemed like he was trying to be stoic and tough, which was fine if that was his personality. Adrian grunted and nodded, a slight grimace on his face as he considered her words, "I do what I can, when I can. Always appreciate extra hands." He patted the mudbray. "Recently had someone help me get a proper fence around my berry plants so the oddish..." He trailed off as he turned to point to the plot, only to see an oddish throwing itself at the fence around the orchard. His brows slanted into an annoyed scowl instantly. "Yet they still insist on trying to break in to destroy everything. I swear, it's an absolute infestation here. You, uh... well, if you don't mind. Battling the oddish seems to keep them at bay for a little while and I don't have time to do so constantly."

The estate owned rubbed his temple with one hand, watching the enthusiastic oddish with ever growing dismay.

Such a thing seemed so uncharacteristic of the Pokemon species, if the pokedex information was to be believed. However, it was clearly the reality as the wild Oddish was banging into the fence, very adamant about either knocking it down completely, or just accessing the plot of land just behind it. This one looked smaller than the previous Oddish she had seen running around the property. This wasn’t a bad thing, though, because a smaller weed was probably younger, meaning that it would be a good training opportunity. ”Sure, I’d be happy to. These Oddish are actually a really good training opportunity for my Pokemon. Let’s see what kind of fight the little ones put up,” she said with a smile. She walked away from Adrian and closer to the Oddish, observing its behavior a little more closely. Could the plot of land on the other side of the fence be that great? Regardless of the wild Pokemon’s motivations, it was being a nuisance and so now the situation would get handled. Taking one of her poke balls out of her pocket, she tossed it into the air and the latch released, a beam of white energy calling forth her Chimchar. The young ape Pokemon danced a bit, before settling. ”Hanuman, this is your first real battle. I think you have observed enough and are ready. Let’s show the Oddish that it shouldn’t be so destructive. Give it a full powered Fire Punch!” Flames erupted from the closed fist of the young Pokemon, as the Chimchar looked at it. He had never performed his attacks before, so this was as much of a learning experience for the Sinnoh starter, as it was for his trainer. After staring at it for a second, the Chimchar shook off the starstruck look in his eyes and dashed forward, swinging his arm with a cross punch. After a few seconds, he would then try to uppercut the Oddish underneath its “chin”. [attr="class","rexmannotes"] Notes: [attr="class","rexmannotes2"]

The result of the battle was a given before it even began. The distracted oddish was dead set on getting past this fence and paid the chimchar no mind. Thus that fiery punch aimed for its jaw was right on target and sent it flying backwards, a little scorched and very dazed. It shook itself, trying to retaliate with a nasty acid attack, but despite the sting of those chemicals on fur and skin, the chimchar pushed forward to smack the oddish right into the grass. It did not reemerge. 

Adrian rubbed the back of his head, "Well. One down. Hundred more to go..." He let out a long suffering sigh. "You're more than welcome to keep thinning the weeds. If you need a break, just come inside, the door is unlocked. Cold water in the fridge." Pause. "Oh. I should probably introduce myself. I'm, uh, Adrian Hartt. Been restoring this ranch for about a year now to run my pokemon breeding business out of it."

To Hanuman’s credit, the chimp fought through the pain and delivered the attack as commanded. The flaming fist of the monkey proved to be too much for the wild Oddish to handle and it was sent away, disappearing in the tall grass. However, Adrian’s sigh brought the mood down a little bit as he said that it was an unending problem. Poor guy, he seemed really exhausted. “It’s nice to meet you Adrian. My name is Caitlin Hughes, I run the Johto Spa and Hot Springs. The location is new, you may not have heard of it yet. I’d happy to continue helping you out, it sounds like you still have a lot to do before your breeding business is good to go. He guided the mudbray to where a ponyta was grazing, and as he did so, a skiddo and wooloo ran up as if in greeting. As he handled his pokemon, her chimchar was getting pumped up for the next fight!

A fight that would not be hard to find at all.

A little deeper in the grass they would find a lone mareep, all sparked up and harassing some wooper that likely lived in the nearby pond. They were immune to electricity, but the mareep kept circling them and bumping into them with sparks, as if playing an odd sort of game.

When the light faded, a brand new Pokemon stood before her. ”Monferno, the Playful Pokemon. A fire and fighting type. It skillfully controls the intensity of the fire on its tail to keep its foes at an ideal distance. A bigger fire on its tail and a brighter blue pattern on its face means it holds a higher rank in its troop.” Hanuman looked at his hands and made a fist with his right hand, making it glow. Ducklet. Ducklet... Swanna! The mareep sparked up even fluffier with electricity before lunging at the monferno. It was hard to tell if it was being playful or aggressive as it took that lunge. Hanuman's fist burned with flames as he lunged forward to hit the sheep. Said sheep met him halfway. There was a surge of flames and sparks and both were thrown back from the intensity of the impact. It was hard enough that dust was thrown into the air!

When the two combatants recovered...it revealed a very tired, wobbly mareep, and a now paralyzed monferno that was struggling against the effects of static.

Hanuman seemed ready to continue fighting but staggered, paralysis keeping him in his place. Frowning, she thought about what to do and remembered that her mom had asked her at one point to look for a Mareep. Deciding that her mom had sent her enough Pokemon in the past, it was a favor that she was willing to complete. She dug through her bag for a second before pulling out a regular red and white poke ball. Winding her arm back, she threw the sphere forward, hoping for a successful catch.
