Adrian grit his teeth as red eyes emerged from the gloom to reveal a terrible spook. This spirit was larger and more menacing than the ones they passed through like a breeze earlier in the forest, and Tommy was not at all tempted to send out Byte to face this powerful final evolution of gastly. He could hardly move at all, frozen in place, blood like ice as he clung to Heimdal's fur. The hound growled, fire building in his maw, bright with warning. He would not be intimidated and if needed, he would fight or flee. Loyal to the very end.

But true to his word that he left the arcanine with the boy to protect him, Adrian did not ask for the arcanine's assistance. He instead considered his options for the briefest of moments. He had Sarge and Zoro. Both were good matches, but Zoro was already out of his ball and pawing at the loamy earth beneath his hooves. An easy choice. 

"You will be hurting nobody. This child and this chikorita are under my protection. We will be leaving the forest, and you will be purged from this shrine. Zoro, use assurance!" He stepped back, out of the line of combat as Zoro plowed past, head lowered, bellowing as bulls do. The combat breed tauros was more than ready to show this gengar to the might of his horns!

The gengar seemed to grow in size as Adrian spoke and a hollow laughter rung out, "and who should stop me?" It asked rhetorically and confidently, "you think I'm so easily removed? I have been here for eons and faced countless of trainers, all have failed. Why do you think the forest is feared?"
It looked anything but impressed with the group it was facing, it grinned and inhaled the smell of fear, enjoying it fully.
It swung an arm over its head and poisonous acid rained from it and down on all of them, most of them could dodge it if they tried, and was fast about it. Zoro on the other hand was too busy focusing on his next attack and charged straight into a big blob which burned his fur, it would probably just enrage him even more.

Zoro rammed into the gengar, who instantly deflated and both it whirled through its own evaporating shadows. It slowed its backwards flight midair and stared at them furiously, shadows exploded from the ground and covered the trashing Zoro, his snorting and grunts were cut short and when the shadows seeped away he was laying unconsciously on the ground.
"You will pay for that!" The gengar hissed furiously and once again grew in size. The shadows did as well, and chikorita was trashing in its sleep as the darkness fell over them, the strange fog became so thick they couldn't see each other, and their voices were muffled.
Red eyes gloated hatefully in the shadows.

The shadows seemed to swallow Zoro whole as the Gengar bantered back, its malignancy evident in every poison, dripping word. Adrian stood his ground, refusing to cower, but...when the shadows spat Zoro out, his blood too ran cold at the sight of the bull laying there...defeated. Refusing to be cowed by the ghost's presence, he rushed to Zoro's side to shield him from further assault, one hand diving to his belt to grab Sarge's pokeball.

"This is far from over—!" 

But before he could send out the mightyena in Zoro's place, something smacked him in the back of the head and there was a flash of light.

His head whipped to the side, eyes wide, "Wait! I told you to stay back." But too late, Tommy had thrown Byte into the battle and Adrian swore. "What are you..." He trailed off, seeing the terror on the boy's face as he stared, not at the gengar, but at Adrian and Zoro. He was frozen again, arm outstretched, his eyes screaming his reasoning without words. He had to intervene. He had to help. No matter how scared he was... 

"B-byte—" Tommy stuttered out, unable to form a command. 

Adrian knew what he had to do.

He had to get Zoro up on his hooves. Had to show the boy that the bull would be okay and that they had this covered. He switched tactics from sending out Sarge to taking out a revive and breaking the capsule in the bull's mouth. He encouraged his pokemon to swallow the powder and patted his neck and shoulders until Zoro stirred awake. 

"Gotta get up, bud. C'mon. Tommy needs you—us—to be his hero." When Zoro started to stand, he grabbed the porygon's pokeball and looked back at Tommy, giving him a thumbs up. "You did great, kid. But leave the rest to us." He turned to face the gengar with a hard smile on his face. "We're far from down and out. Hear that, spirit? You won't be victorious this time."

"Y-yeah! We will defeat you," Tommy squeaked out. 

Byte, not exactly one to be alarmed by anything in particular, faced the gengar in its blank-faced manner. Should it still be up and floating after the gengar's next attack, Adrian would reach for another healing item for Zoro, as it was very evident he couldn't face this gengar when low on HP. This might be tricky but...

Tarlar I went back over the last couple posts and updated Porygon! I also realized it never got its levels from the majestic grove fight either. Nickname updated to Byte.

The malevolent spirit cackled. It's heels kicked up to float belly up as its taunting laughter rippled around the shrine. Between breaths it spouted words like 'your faces' and 'bumbling', pointing at the pair of trainers and releasing another brief uproar.

Gengar side-eyed the synthetic pokemon as it settled into rumbling giggles. The poison type flopped its long tongue out and swept it across its immaterial lips as Tommy found courage enough to form a full thought.
"Will you now?" Gengar dropped back to the ground and hungrily eyed his company with the ghost's famous toothy grin. It didn't do anything to stop the revival of the bull; confident in his ability to show Zoro his place a second time. Though, that grin curled down just a touch as he noticed the colorful polygonal being before him didn't seem to fully appreciate his presence.

"Well, I'll let you work up to it then while I play with this one."

A baleful look washed over the virtual pokemon with a notable pressure descending. Shadows crept in once again, this time only finding their way around Byte and Gengar with a swirl not unlike a painterly stroke of an uncountable number of eyes in varying sizes. Anyone attempting to remove the porygon from the space would find it impossible to breach the smokey barrier.

When the barrier of eyes and smoke swirled between them, Adrian swore again. 

"W-what's going on?" squeaked Tommy. "I can't see Byte..." Not well at least.

"It's mean look. It means Byte is trapped in battle with the spirit until one of them is defeated."

"B-b-but Byte is..."

"Not ready for this battle, I know," Adrian rummaged in his bag for a new medicine, unable to intervene at this time and forced to busy his hands. His mind raced. "But do what you can."

"I-I-I..." Tears welled up in Tommy's eyes, the wellspring of bravado running dry in the face of the gengar's isolating attack. He trembled like a wet lilipup and turned pleading eyes to Adrian. "Help." And that was all Adrian needed to hear to reinforce his stance that Tommy needed protecting and that he was the only one who could do it. When the heat was on, officers couldn't stand back, they had to leap to action and plunge into the fight. 

"Heimdal, get as far back with the kid as you can," Adrian commanded his arcanine. The police hound woofed and shuffled back as Tommy clung to his mane with clammy, shaking hands. Super potion in hand, he stared at the mist before them, dense, ominous, and entrapping. "Byte! Use psybeam!" He knew he wasn't the porygon's trainer but maybe there was a tiny advantage to Tommy being so afraid of the artificial pokemon. There wasn't a super strong bond yet and it might just listen to him... And fortunately, that seemed to be the case. Hearing its assigned name with a command made the porygon shift its blank, impassive gaze fully onto the gengar. Its angular limbs whirled as it shimmered with psychic energy and light. 

Adrian felt his breathing ease a bit as he sprayed Zoro with the potion. He kept his voice low. Hopefully too low to be understood by the ghost, "It is very likely Byte will be unable to win this battle. When—or if—it faints, I will need you to charge in with assurance again. Can you do that?" The bull thrashed his head in understanding and agreement, eager for round two. He wanted revenge and his trainer was offering it on a silver platter. Adrian patted his head. "Cool...but we have to be a little patient." He raised his voice again, "You made a mistake entrapping Byte! It will take you down!"

He could feel Tommy's wide eyes on him. In wonder.

Gengar wrapped its hands around his stomach and closed his eyes while tilting his head backwards. He laughed, a loud raucous sound that rustled bright green leaves on the thick grey branches in the canopies above. They were wholly unprepared. Sending out weaklings in face of the might and terror of the boss Pokemon, who were immediately tethered to the spot with Gengar’s strange stare. He straightened himself back out and turned those imposing bloodred eyes back on the strange looking digital Pokemon. “You are so much fun!” Gengar chirped with a wide grin that seemed to almost split its face in half. “I don’t think I want to get rid of you too easily.”

Let Adrian determine what he planned to do to put a stop to the evil ghost. That was fine. It wouldn’t be long before their souls were trapped in eternal damnation with Gengar and his crew, who lurked in the shadows and slipped out when you least expected it. Gengar was positive that these two would make fine new ghostly recruits once their souls were converted and whipped into shape. “Have you figured it all out? Ready to take me down yet?” Gengar asked, spitting up a thick wave of noxious fumes from his mouth that he sprayed all over Byte.

Byte growled with a strange, digital sound before firing off a powerful beam of psychic energy that slapped into Gengar’s side and caused the Pokemon to stumble back a bit with a low growl. His eyes narrowed and his nostrils flared, anger burning into his core for a brief second. No. Keep the toy longer. Gengar noticed from the sidelines how Adrian rushed to heal his Pokemon with the small spray bottle and cackled loudly. “I’ve already defeated your steed once before. Don’t tell me you need a reminder?” He turned to Byte with a hypnotic stare and slowly lured the Pokemon to sleep. “Oh? Looks like this one’s already exhausted. What a shame!” Gengar sneered.

Adrian felt his temper bubble up to the surface. He did not like letting pokemon faint, but he had underestimated the tactics of the evil spirit, not realizing that the spook had the strength to wipe out his tauros in two hits. He was so used to the bull just charging through everything. (A little like himself, though he did try to keep his head about him these days.) Anger sparked in his grey eyes, thunderous as a breeze gusted through, whipping his ragged bangs about, his unruly hair tousled into a truly wild state. He didn't quite look like a standoffish officer like this, but more like the punk that he used to be and could have still been had he not gotten on the straight and narrow. 

"F*** you," he snapped. Oh. Wait. Child around. He faltered just a moment, only to hear a weak echo to his call.

"Y-yeah...Eff you," squeaked Tommy. Adrian would hide in the shame corner later. Maybe tell the kid that it isn't good to swear. Then again, if there was any contextually appropriate time—when an evil spirit threatens to kill you and corrupt your soul—that was it. 

Adrian steeled himself, grimacing as the porygon's weak attack was met by a much stronger one...and then it was put to sleep. They were being toyed with. This was a game to this creature. Lives were on the line and it was mocking them. He couldn't see the fight clearly, which meant he couldn't really help the digital pokemon. Throwing a berry to wake it was an option but...he could darn well miss in this poor visibility. And could porygon even eat berries? Did they have mouths? Questions for a later date. Because there would be later dates. They would survive this. 

Discreetly, while the gengar gloated, he let Sarge out of his ball and fed the hound a healing berry instead. He had to make sure his team was in the best possible condition if things went south again.

"Zoro, remember, if you see that mist dissipate around Byte, I need you to charge in there and use assurance. Got it?" he kept his voice low. Don't let the ghost hear. Louder, for Byte and the spirit to hear, "Don't give up! You got this, Byte!" Adrian cast an apologetic glance at Tommy. Sorry kid. Byte was probably going to faint, no matter what he did, but...Tommy probably knew that. He was the one who threw the cyber duck out there to give Adrian some time to heal up Zoro.

The Mightyena wolfed down on the tiny Oran Berry, breaking the smooth skinned fruit with his sharp teeth. The fruit burst opened inside his mouth, tasting a mediocre amount of scrumptiousness as the nutritious juice and sugar brought the dark type's energy to full. The mammal let out a satisfying growl before swallowing and gulping the tasty snack.

"Heeheehee. Losing your temper? A little snack won't help ya!" The ghost type taunted and then spat on the Porygon, making the normal type fainted from corrupted hardware. Then, the Tauros charged in, and the Gengar's eyes glowed red, shouting "Halt!" at the charging bull. However, the obsidian furred Pokemon just focused on the Gengar's body and didn't pay attention to the eyes, making the attempted hypnosis failed. With one powerful slam, the ghost type was gone, it whimpered a dramatic "NOOooooooo!" as it faded. With the ringleader of the cursed spirits gone, the Ilex Forest now felt like a weight lifted from blanketing over them!

Suddenly, the Forest Shrine glowed bright as Celebi appeared! The mythical onion flew over toward the sick Chikorita, and placed its little hands on the grass type. As the mythical Pokemon glowed green, the Chikorita followed as its curse was lifted as well. If Adrian would like to capture this starter Pokemon, it would be a good time! The Celebi, now freed, playfully flew in the air before disappearing deep into the forest or time travel somewhere.
