A wave of summer heat washed over Oak, the scent of freshly cut grass filling his senses. He blinked his eyes, finding himself standing knee-deep in the emerald expanse of the National Park in Goldenrod City. A gentle breeze weaved through the verdant meadow, carrying with it the liquid notes of water flowing from an ornate fountain nearby. Its tiers sparkled in the golden sunlight, each level cascading into the next with a soporific gurgling sound. Viri, padded beside him, basking in the warmth.
A flash of movement in the tall grass caught Oak's eye. A Bug Catcher, clad in a singlet and shorts, was frantically swishing his net, muttering frustratedly under his breath. The rhythmic swish of the net was punctuated by the buzzing of angry insects evading capture.
"Looks like that fellow’s having trouble," a voice spoke up next to him. Oak turned to see a Cooltrainer with a shock of cobalt hair who extended a friendly hand, a broad smile plastered across his face. "The name's Nick. First time at the Bug Catching Contest, I assume?"
Oak, caught in the dreamlike haze, shook Nick's hand, his voice strangely distant. "Professor Oak," he managed, his own attire inexplicably transformed into a simple pair of khakis and a button-down shirt. Nick chuckled, his blue eyes twinkling.
"Ah, Professor! Well then, allow me to share a little secret," he leaned in conspiratorially, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "The key to winning this contest isn't brute force but respect for your insect. A bedbug is a far easier capture than a jitterbug." Nick made a sleeping gesture with his hands, his eyes closing in a serene expression.
Just then, a flurry of vibrant wings erupted from the grass. A cluster of majestic Butterfree, their delicate wings shimmering in the sunlight, soared into the air, followed closely by a much larger insectoid figure. Its powerful mantis body gleamed in the midday sun, scythe-like appendages glinting menacingly. "Scyther!" it shrieked, a piercing cry that echoed through the park like a clarion call.
Terror shattered the idyllic scene. The frantic swishing of the net ceased abruptly as the Bug Catcher froze and his net fell limply to his side. His carefree expression morphed into one of abject terror as his gaze locked onto the monstrous insect. With infernal speed, the Scyther lunged. Its razor-sharp mandibles gnashed menacingly and its raptorial forelegs slashed through the air. The Bug Catcher let out a bloodcurdling scream, the sound swallowed by the sudden whoosh of wind as a barbed foreleg whipped around his torso. With inhuman strength, the mantis hoisted the hapless trainer clear off the ground, his dangling legs flailing uselessly.
Professor Oak lurched back, his heart hammering against his ribs. He watched in horror as the Scyther dragged its prey back into the tall grass, leaving behind only a single discarded shoe. The Bug Catcher's muffled screams grew fainter with each passing moment, then ceased entirely. An unsettling silence descended upon the meadow, broken only by the gentle gurgling of the fountain.
Oak's mind reeled. A cold sweat prickled his skin, and a primal urge to flee took hold. Oak sank to his knees, the blissful dream had morphed into a chilling nightmare. What kind of twisted competition had he found himself in?

As the flower blooms beside the trunk of an ancient tree, Viri's youthful exuberance may yet rekindle the Professor's passion for discovery and wonder at the connections between Pokémon and their human companions. The shattered peace left a ringing silence in its wake. The vibrant meadow now felt suffocatingly claustrophobic. Oak's gaze darted towards the spot where the Bug Catcher had vanished, his blood turning to ice.
Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught his eye. One of the Butterfree, its wings catching the sunlight like stained glass, lingered behind the fleeing swarm.
"Solomiya?" he croaked, his voice barely a whisper.
The Butterfree dipped gracefully, a mosaic of tiny, multifaceted lenses stared back at him. Compound eyes. Unblinking, emotionless. They weren't the gentle, curious eyes of his beloved Butterfree. The fleeting hope of recognition evaporated instantly.
The Butterfree's antennae twitched and a low hum resonated from its body. Panic seized Oak. He knew that hum.
"Psybeam!" he roared, the warning a split second too late. A beam of lavender psychic energy, shimmering like a distorted mirage, erupted from the Butterfree's antennae. It sliced past Oak's shoulder, singeing his shirt with an acrid tang before searing a furrow in the ground where it struck. The scorched earth smoked, a testament to the power that had just brushed past him.
Adrenaline surged through him. Flight was the only option. He lunged for Viri, who had remained frozen in fear beside him. Scooping her up, he plunged into the tall grass, the Butterfree's enraged cries ringing in his ears. Oak didn't dare look back. They were now caught in a treacherous maze, each rustle a potential new threat.

Viri's panting grew ragged, her short legs straining against the unfamiliar exertion of running. Oak, focused on weaving through the dense sea of grass, didn't hear the subtle shift in her breathing at first. But then, a strangled yelp escaped her throat, followed by a strained gurgle.
Oak skidded to a halt, his heart pounding against his ribs. Viri stood there, her tongue lolling out, her body trembling. A surge of nausea contorted her features and guttural sound of distress rumbled in her throat, followed by a violent heave. A glob of purple goo splattered onto the emerald grass beneath a nearby tree. It sizzled and smoked, leaving scorched patches where it landed.
Oak rushed to her side, panic and concern momentarily eclipsing his fear. "Viri!" he exclaimed, kneeling beside her, cradling her gently. "Are you alright?"
Viri whimpered, her eyes glazed over with exertion. The exertion combined with the terror of the Scyther attack had clearly pushed her past her limits. Suddenly, a startled hiss pierced the air. Oak's gaze darted upwards, his eyes widening in horror. Hanging upside down from a low branch directly above them was a Metapod, its hard, segmented shell gleaming dully in the filtered sunlight.
Viri's stomach lurched again and with a final, desperate heave, another geyser of corrosive liquid arced through the air, landing squarely on the unsuspecting Metapod. The full brunt of the Ivysaur's Acid Spray washed over the hapless Pokémon but Oak ignored the Metapod's plight for now, his focus solely on his distressed companion. Viri, drained and panting, looked up at him with wide, apologetic eyes.
Scooping Viri into his arms, Oak cradled her close. "It's okay, girl," he reassured. "We'll find a safe place to rest. We'll get out of this."
His eyes scanned their surroundings, searching for any sign of a clearing, a source of water, anything that might help Viri recover.

Sweat beaded on Professor Oak's brow as he patted Viri's head, feeling the cool dampness clinging to her feverish form. Lifting her up gently, he cradled the weakened Ivysaur in his arms, navigating through the tall grass with careful steps to minimise any discomfort. Reaching the fountain at the heart of the park was their immediate goal in order to hydrate his weakened companion who felt like a lead weight in his arms.
Ignoring the exhaustion gnawing at his own legs, Oak pushed forward through the seemingly endless stalks of grass towards the centre. Each rustle and buzz seemed magnified. Oak couldn't shake the creeping sensation that every sound heralded an impending threat as his mind raced with paranoia imagining sinister creatures lurking just beyond their sight, poised to pounce from the grassy depths.
Relief washed over them as they reached the end of the verdant expanse unscathed. There, nestled in the circular plaza, stood the park's iconic fountain. Its tiered basin overflowed with crystal-clear water, a tranquil oasis glimmering in the summer haze. Reaching the fountain, Oak carefully lowered Viri onto a stone bench beside the trickling water.
The melodic gurgle of the water seemed to have a calming effect. Viri's ragged breaths began to slow, her eyelids fluttered open slightly, her gaze sluggish but filled with a flicker of relief. Oak didn't waste time. He cupped his hands and scooped up some of the cool, clear water, offering it to Viri's parched lips. She drank deeply, her body trembling with each swallow but the water seemed to revitalise her. Taking a deep breath himself, Oak allowed himself a moment of respite. They were safe, for now; the sound of Viri's steady breathing offered a fragile promise of hope. |

As Viri regained her strength with each sip from the cool fountain, a tiny movement at the edge of the basin caught Oak's eye. A Nymble, a small, grasshopper-like Pokémon, hopped onto the stone lip and inspected its reflection in the rippling water with yellow cruciform eyes.
For a moment, Oak simply watched in silence before he remembered the forgotten purpose of their being in the Park; the Bug Catching Contest. "Viri," he whispered, nudging the refreshed Ivysaur with his elbow. "Look! That little cricket... could be our ticket." They were woefully unprepared, with Viri far from her battling best, but they had nothing to lose and submitting any contender was better than none.
Cooltrainer Nick's words echoed in his mind: "The key to winning this contest isn't brute force but respect for your insect. A bedbug is a far easier capture than a jitterbug." With another gentle nudge, Oak encouraged Viri towards the Nymble. "Viri," he murmured, his voice soft. "Can you manage a Sleep Powder?"
Viri's eyelids fluttered open, a flicker of understanding passing between them. A sweet, fragrant scent filled the air as Viri unleashed a puff of pink powder from her flower bud. The Nymble, oblivious to the danger, tilted its head and continued to admire its reflection, its tiny antennae twitching curiously. The pink dust drifted towards the unsuspecting Pokémon, aiming to lull it into a peaceful slumber.

The cloud of Sleep Powder drifted lazily on the warm afternoon breeze and settled like a patina of fairy dust over the Nymble, coating its glossy black exoskeleton in a soft sheen. Still lost in its self-absorbed inspection, its yellow eyes, once bright with curiosity, began to droop ever so slightly. Its twitching antennae stilled, the frenetic energy that propelled the tiny grasshopper replaced by a slow sway. Finally, with a soft plop, the Nymble toppled forward, its delicate limbs giving way to the irresistible pull of sleep. It landed harmlessly on the soft grass bordering the fountain, its miniature body curled into a peaceful slumber.
Seeing his chance, Oak reached into his backpack and retrieved a Sport Ball which was just a standard Poké Ball with a white "S" branded across the red hemisphere. He positioned himself for a clean throw, taking a moment to aim at the slumbering Nymble and then tossed the device along the grass where it tumbled to a rest beside the dozing grasshopper. Oak watched intently with bated breath, the silence broken only by the babbling of the fountain.

The red light on the capture device flared to life as soon as the miniature grasshopper was sucked into the Sport Ball. It pulsed once, twice, then a satisfying click was heard as the light died down. A grin spread across Oak's face. Success! He bent down and scooped up the ball, feeling its satisfying weight. "Viri! We might be finally in the game now!" he effused, eager to share his enthusiasm with his companion.
As he straightened, a movement caught his eye. A teenager with a vacant expression on his face stood motionless several feet away, staring at him. Oak couldn't tell if he was starstruck, confused or something else entirely. He had short mousy brown hair and wore a plain-coloured T-shirt and jeans. Beside the teen stood a Drowzee, its fleshy nose-like appendage snuffled the air like a trunk as it surveyed the area with narrow, glazed eyes.
A new thought snagged in Oak's mind. The teen's blank stare, the Drowzee... maybe the boy was just hypnotised? Oak offered a hesitant nod, a gesture that hung in the air unanswered. The teen remained rooted to the spot, a silent observer. But it was the Drowzee that sent a shiver down Oak's spine. Drowzee were notorious for their dream-eating abilities and a direct look into their eyes could leave a person susceptible to their psychic manipulation. Oak ripped his gaze away, the unsettling encounter leaving him feeling self-conscious and exposed.
"Come along, Viri," Oak muttered, ushering his Ivysaur along. He didn't dare linger. With a final, fleeting glance at the enigmatic pair, Oak turned and plunged into the long grass, Viri at his heels.

The tall grass rustled against Oak's legs as he pushed forward, Viri weaving through the green stalks close behind. Suddenly, Viri let out a sharp cry and halted. Oak skidded to a stop beside his Pokémon, his hand instinctively reaching for a Sport Ball. Before them, nestled amongst the grass, was a Wurmple. The small caterpillar inched forward on its prolegs, its beady eyes fixated on Viri. Reacting on pure instinct, Viri opened her mouth and sent a jet of searing acid spraying towards the Wurmple. The worm shrieked in surprise as the acid made contact, its lumpy red body momentarily recoiling before retreating back into the curtain of grass with a disgruntled wiggle.
Oak stared at his Ivysuar, a sigh escaping his lips. "Viri, that wasn't necessary," he said gently, crouching down to check on her. "It was just a Wurmple." Viri tilted her head sheepishly, her large ruby eyes blinking innocently. Oak couldn't help but smile. "Just be careful, alright?" he added, scratching Viri affectionately behind the ear. "We don't want to waste energy on every little bug we come across."
Acid Spray x2. By the way, Viri is level 20.
