The world opened around them, creating a blend of colors and emotions that seeped into the atmosphere. Small children pressed against the long legs of their parents, bug eyes staring between the statues in strange wonder. It was a mystical place, where the heavens above could no longer hold back their flood gates and wept for the souls that inhabited the world below them. Some creatures hid in the dugout tunnels within the earth, whilst others pressed inside of hollowed out holes in the sides of trees. Large eyes, unwavering, blinked from the distance and watched in silence.
Mishu pulled the hood of her poncho over her head. She moved through the semi-quiet world around her where travelers packed up their long covers previously used to set up simple picnics to share the moment with their families. Bonding over small sandwiches slathered with thick jelly and cakey peanut butter paired with thin slices of potato chips poured out of an opened bag, whose contents always seemed to contain more air than food. She smiled, watching the families immediately book it, and thought back to the days of her youth before her parents were violently taken from her. Where would she be if life had been different?
They took many trips during the short times they found availability. Soft amber hues reflected, their colored muddying into a burnt golden tone like honey cooked upon delicate meat in preparation of a fine meal. Her parents’ car was quite the ride at one time, with innovations that mirrored the latest and greatest tech of its time, though borrowed through the years. Its youth stolen from it from the wear and tear, though maintained to pristine condition like a pro athlete or rich performer whose wealth easily kept their beauty standards in mint condition.
A small stain leaked from the corner of one eye as she reflected on days gone by. She lowered herself onto a nearby bench and hummed softly. It was hard to equate in words just how her heart pained for the faces of two very important people they would never get to see again. She could speak to their spirits and send little prayers to Arceus in hopes that her message would be delivered. She would never know – could never know – just where the soul wandered after it left the mortal coils of life. Hope. The one driving force that united society and promised that through the worst of it all, she might yet meet with them one day.
Hope. A virtually harmless bug when it wasn’t weaponized to demonize others who did not see the world through the same lens. Hope. A powerful tool most clung onto to help dull the pain that sunk into the pits of their chest and chewed at the inner wirings of their heart. She wasn’t sure where she sat on such beliefs – whether spirits carried on after they released themselves of their physical forms, and if there was a realm beyond the world they lived in. She only wished she could see her parents once more.
To promise them that their baby girl, whom they instilled so much love and courage in and to whom they loved so dearly, managed to grow up into a fine, upstanding lady who carried on in their footsteps, working on dispelling myths around marginalized a Pokémon Type, and worked on actively studying Pokémon in their natural habitats. Most of the original travelers cleared out of the area, easily wanting to release themselves from the worst of the downpour. She didn’t blame them as she traveled down memory lane. The balloon of grief burst inside of her chest all at once, echoing with the rains that poured from the heavens above, and caused her to choke back her own inner thoughts.
I miss you so much, mom and dad. She feigned a delicate smile that wavered, as though barely able to stake any claim upon her face. I hope you’re proud of me. I hope I’ve managed to carry on our legacy. I only wish I could have said goodbye or went on one more camping trip before you left me. I’m not mad. You had no choice in the matter and you were only trying to help Pokémon kind. I’m just hurting inside. She pulled out a small plastic bottle of pop and yanked the top off, easily guzzling it down her throat. You’ve raised me to be strong. I’ll be strong for all of us. I know that’s what you would have wanted. She thought quietly, absentmindedly petting the top of Ziggy’s head as he pressed against her leg.

Rain, rain, go away. That was probably what the pokemon of this route were thinking. The rain poured and pattered, streaking through the sky to mingle with the glow of the city to create a hazy oil painting of hues. Occasionally lightning arced above, cutting a bright path as keen as a knife, slicing effortlessly through darkness and heavy clouds. On the ground, a bright blue form scurried across the main path, flanked by a few others of its kind. In their mouths were berries. One paused to glare at Mishu, bristling defensively. She chomped down on her berry, crushing it in powerful jaws before facing her. The others started to scamper and scurry, leaving her behind to defend their backs.

Mishu shook most of the blues off herself as she turned her attention to a pair of spiky-eared hyraxes ushering her youngsters through the rain. It was a marvel, especially given the known phenomenon of such Pokémon being incompatible with creating eggs when left in a Daycare setting and suggested that this species could not favorably reproduce under the containment of mankind. Mishu quickly shuffled through her belongings, pulling out a small journal where she detailed her notes as she collected them from the field, and quickly began writing her discoveries and hypothesizes down with consideration of what she was trying to insinuate.
“You’re beautiful. Momma?” Mishu’s voice quivered a bit, more with an uneasy tone as she wasn’t quite positive that her findings were accurate. It could be a small herd simply traveling through the area they considered their territory, with little connection to their own genealogy. They could also be related through a parent as siblings, where one was able to achieve the evolution it sought whilst the others hadn’t quite managed such a feat. “I promise, I mean you no harm.” She insisted, though it was dubious whether such efforts to reassure the Nidorina worked or not. Nidorina narrowed her eyes angrily and shrieked loudly, warning nearby Pokémon who scattered in different directions.
Heart appeared in a burst of red light and circled overhead, her eyes beaming down on the strange pair of Pokémon that remained as threatening forces against her trainer. This would not do! “Take your leave!” The large corvid screeched at the top of her lungs. Lightning flashed behind her, lighting up the darkened atmosphere for a brief instance, before allowing the almost night-like reflection of thick grey cumulonimbus clouds swelled against the skies like gigantic towers blocked out the sun’s once warm reflection. “I teach you good, take your leave! So go, unless I teach you good!” She swooped down, flapping her wings powerfully to create large, sharp gusts of wind.
The sharp winds were like steel blades that tore through the tall emerald blades of grass in sporadic patterns. Mishu gasped, quickly collecting her things, and ducked just out of range. While she wasn’t surprised at how quickly her Pokémon responded to a threat, she remained firmly concerned at the level of aggression they seemingly expressed. “Heart, please! Calm down! The possible mother Pokémon doesn’t understand and is only defending the young ones!” She urged her Pokémon, who kept sending powerful blast after powerful blast in Nidorina’s direction. Whatever the reason for the intruder’s threats, Heart would silence them at once. She had to, as her trainer’s firm defender. There was no other option in Heart’s mind.

Mishu watched with a certain level of difficulty as Heart chased the would-be aggressor and her small offspring off. Her heartstrings pulled against the weights that swelled inside of her chest. If the Nidorina was a mother of two small poisonous hares who hadn’t yet met the requirements for evolution, she could understand the apprehensive need of the wild beast to defend her young. If she was just a leader within a colony of Nidorina and Nidorino, she couldn’t fault them for wanting to ensure their own safety.
“You did a good job.” Mishu relented, shielding her eyes from the downpour as she craned her head up towards the heavens above. A flash of lightning ripped through the dark grey clouds, brightening the world for an instance, before drenching it back in the drab greys that surrounded them all. “Although, we should probably keep moving forward.” Mishu nodded, picking herself back off the bench with a swift turn towards the northernmost pathway forward.
They still needed to make their way through the soaked environment to the ancient relics of Ecruteak City. Venturing into its burnt towers, whose mysteries swelled with twice as many mythologies as it did facts, might prove useful for Mishu’s endeavors. Heart swooped low and landed on the tallest branch in the tallest tree nearby. She lifted a wing up over her face and searched with her sharp eyes into the distance, trying to ensure that no threats awaited them further up.
“I no hurt what no attacks. It threaten, I defend.” Heart chirped proudly, bristling her feathers up with a wide smile that covered pointed yellow beak. Though Mishu couldn’t understand exactly what Heart crowed, she was able to get the gist through the sounds of her voice and her body language. “You remain one of my most faithful companions.” She added with a soft sigh, trudging on carefully with her poncho pressed over her normal attire, shielding her from most of the rain.

Heart remained a sentinel. She scanned the area ahead of them as they traveled, letting loud caws be the warning for any would-be challengers. As a burst of lightning illuminated their faces before drenching them in darkness, the troupe paused along their trek. Heads craned to the skies as Heart’s outstretched wings lifted her high above, then landed on another tree yards ahead. Sharp eyes given to a sharper beak, whose voice howled over the loud claps of thunder chasing after their lightning streaks.
Mishu paused, rich hues like honey staring out into the darkened atmosphere through buckets of rain that splashed around them seemingly endlessly. Something stirred in the shadows – a large beast with a wide back, sharp spikes jutting out of its spine, and twin heads that twitched nervously as they approached. When Mishu neared the beast, she’d notice the ‘twin heads’ were just two large ears affixed to the poisonous hyrax, trapped in the muddy pathway.
It struggled with a loud, raucous bellow that shook the earth. As Nidorino flipped about, striving in vain to break from the muck only to be pulled down deeper inside of its recesses, Mishu frowned. This was natural selection at its finest. A true conservationist would turn a blind eye, realizing that letting nature take her course no matter how cruel it may seem, would only benefit the planet as a whole. But she was a bleeding heart and had a difficult time just turning a blind eye.
“Blondie, can you come help our friend?” Mishu called out a small fish with long, sharp fangs. Blondie appeared in the thin water splashing about angrily. What was this woman even thinking?! This wasn’t a very viable and safe place for her to swim around! But when Mishu gestured towards their friend with a knowing wave of her hands, Blondie just rolled her eyes instead. “Can you spray your water just underneath Nidorino’s side? It might be strong enough to knock it out of the mud. We can deal with its wrath after.”
They had to hope this would work!

Nidorino bellowed with a mighty shake of his head. Long, jagged horns with chips running the length of the horns’ shaft hook in different directions as Nidorino shook his head. He bristled, arching his stocky back to make himself look even larger. “Stay away!” The wild hyrax bellowed, the sound of his voice along shaking the nimble branches of stray trees around the area. “I’m not afraid to gut you like a fish, you know!” The pun that he’d made on the moment would remain largely unappreciated, however, as Blondie glared angrily and eyed her trainer skeptically.
“We’re here to help you, you know!” She puffed up, her rough scales sparkling in the thin sunlight that barely managed to break through the thick grey clouds overhead. Why was it so difficult to help other Pokémon? It didn’t have to be, but they actively made it so! “If you’re choosing another option, that’s on you! I definitely won’t hold back!” She swam forward in the puddle, large teeth chomping threateningly in the air. Nidorino stomped one of his feet in the ground whilst kicking about wildly, grunting out of frustration.
“I won’t hold back either!” Nidorino roared whilst flopping about. If only he could get himself totally free of the mud! Even when he plucked himself out of one puddle, with a lot of struggling and firm deliberation, he only fell into another and rolled about in a messy heap. Blondie rolled her eyes with an annoyed huff. “Of course, you won’t, buddy. You’re doing a bang up job as it is.” She mused, spraying Nidorino in the side with a powerful burst of water. It worked a bit, slowly breaking away some of the muck that clung to Nidorino’s legs, but a persistent amount still clung on.
“I really mean it! I’m going to gouge you! You better run!” Nidorino bluffed angrily. It was sad, really. Even with a glance at Mishu to be absolutely sure, Blondie was starting to feel like she would actively be the bully if she did anything but help. Yet, here this Nidorino remained, loudmouthed and hotheaded. No thanks. No appreciation. Just one wrong word or phrase away from becoming history by a less caring Pokémon, if he wasn’t careful. “I’m really feeling it right now, I tell ya! Oof! Oww! That hurt! Please, spare me!” She chuckled, spritzing Nidorino again, managing to break him from the gunk.
Nidorino kicked his feet cheerfully, before spinning around with one quick tap of his leg against Blondie’s side. It was more of a gentle push, as though he were trying to prod her away from the area despite all her help. He jumped back with a loud yelp. “Owww! Your skin hurts!”Blondie chuckled with a nod of her head. Of course, it did! Had he never really met that many fish before? “Yep.” She nodded thoughtfully, puffing up her cheeks once more. “And they’re scales, not skin. Slightly different things.” She winked, then nudged the wild hyrax against his side. “Anyways, last offer. Return to your colony, and we’ll go our separate ways. No one has to get hurt, see?” Nidorino nodded, before running off into the distance.

Some pokemon like the rain. Some pokemon don't mind thunderstorms with their roaring winds and harsh downpours. Others are frightened by them, hiding in their shelters, quivering in fear, trying not to make a peep so the sky didn't open up and swallow them whole to slake its hunger. And then there were the pokemon that got FURIOUS at the AUDACITY of mother nature. One might assume such a creature would be notoriously temperamental like a fearow or perhaps moody like a persian. No. What screeched its absolute ire into the sky this day was a bird. A sopping wet and quite frankly done with the whole season—Pidgeotto. It would bellow its upset and swoop down towards Mishu, as if she was to blame for it being wet and unable to fly properly.

A loud screech overhead caught Mishu’s attention. Sharp eyes darted to the dark skies and searched quietly; her lips formed a tight frown in disbelief. Was something stalking them from on high? Perhaps, the Gods of the Storms were calling out as a warning, urging her to seek shelter whilst time remained for her to do such a thing? She hummed, finger pressed to one side of her face, and kept her head craned as dark golden irises searched endlessly for myth or beast.
When the call came again confusion faded into understanding. Mishu’s bright hues widened, those lips once pursed unwound into a wide smile. She nodded, quickly pulling out her book and flipping through the pages until an all-too-familiar bird popped out on the passages in-between. It was a sharp shrill, avian in nature with the boom of a creature similar to an osprey. Bright red and yellow feathers flowed in the form of tailfeathers, with a crest of reds adorning its head.
This wasn’t the first time Mishu faced such a formidable foe. Memories flooded in the space between her eyes, locked inside of her mind. Korn – at such a time he’d been originally known as Suraimu, though rarely seemed to want or care for such a name – toyed about the field with the large bird as Mishu and Falkner carried on a rather welcoming conversation. It was thanks to him that she searched out more in the city that lies beyond Goldenrod – Ecruteak, as it called. And it was thanks to him that she sought eventual council with Karen, as a fellow Dark Type enthusiast, beyond that.
Pidgeotto landed a bit awkwardly, wings outstretched in the pouring rains with a sharp gaze that aimed to kill or mangle anything it might land upon. Blondie was first, splashing about in the heavy downpour. She swam out inside of a large puddle and puffed herself up, enraged that this creature dared threaten her trainer and thus her own livelihood. Heart kept a close eye from above, eyes darting down with a powerful screech. The rain soaked through her feathers as well, dragging down her usual speed, though she struggled through them.
“It doesn’t surprise me that your species seems to lack the evolutionary trait of waterproof feathers that are common in waterfowl.” Mishu muttered to herself engrossed in her researched with a large umbrella pulled so close to her head and the book itself, she had to bend at an odd angle. Osprey – a species only casually linked in nature to the powerful beast whose air blasts could devastate cities if it wished – were known for their oily feathers that lend aid to their waterproof capabilities.
They lived by waterways and hunted primarily fish, similar to the notably mention of one of Pidgeotto’s preferred prey being Magikarp as well. It was just odd that such a similar gene seemed lost between the two, all things considered, but not all that strange outside of evolution itself. “Blondie, be careful!” Mishu clasped her hands around her mouth and shouted with worry. The small, colorful piranha rushed on the tips of her fins, jaws agape with an icy breath that forms freezing shards around her teeth. She hoped to near the wild beast enough that she could sink them into Pidgeotto’s delicate flesh with ease.

Wet birb was mad birb. When the fish was sent out to confront it, the pidgeotto let out a furious noise and lunged forward, quick as a whip, streaking forward in a blur of light. It made an ornery noise on impact, loathing the feeling of those rough scales against its sodden feathers. It shook itself, fluffing up, as if to prepare to beat its wings with a fury and sent the fish away with a powerful gale...but Blondie was quicker. He bit twice with frosty fangs in quick succession. Cronch! CRUNCH! The bird let out a pained cry and flapped helplessly until it freed itself from those terrible fangs. Then it awayed into the night! The storm was more welcome company than this trainer.

Panic and fright rushed through Mishu’s entire being. She neither moved to call her Pokemon out, considering Blondie was swimming seamlessly around the dampened environment whilst hopping from waterway to waterway, even if their bodies were minute in stature, nor did she fathom the time to recall her fish. Blondie moved on her own accord, swift and true with wintry fangs that sent the wild avian clasping back to the skies above.
“What will I do with you?” Mishu hummed to herself. Blondie sent herself of her own accord and volition. Mishu remained an outsider in many respects regarding the previous altercation, simply studying and deducing among herself the occurrences of the bird before shouting in alarm at the speed and tenacity of her own Pokemon. Blondie turned, those large crimson eyes staring boldly up at her trainer and puffed out her scale-encrusted chest proudly.
Mishu should be brimming with pride! Her Carvanha was a powerhouse, easily thwarting would-be foes where they stood and ensuring no harm came to them in the same breath! She didn’t charge needlessly, given the way she’d helped the previous hyrax during the worst parts of the storm. Wind and rain howled about them like a caged beast, gnarled fangs tearing at metallic bars fruitlessly to free themselves at once and wreak the most havoc.
Yet, the look in her trainer’s eye was something else. Concern? Worry? “I made sure that bird wasn’t going to harm either of us!” Blondie protested in her own language. Mishu clipped mental notes in the back of her mind as a slow and careful nod shook her head, causing the long blue tangle of curls to bounce against the plastic hood that encased them. “There’s no way I would ever let anything hurt my family!” The impulsive and previously agitated fish declared firmly.
Heart swooped through the air overhead, a loud caw erupting from her bright yellow beak. Something lurked in the distance and just out of reach. Mishu craned her head up to shift her gaze off the red-and-blue fish with bright yellow fins to instead cast them upon her large bird whose dark blue appeared nearly black in the limited sunlight that managed to filter through layers of dark grey cumulus clouds about them. “There’s something up ahead! Possibly a roadblock?” Heart insisted in warning.
“I wonder what’s got her all worked up.” Mishu hummed, feet moving at their own pace forward. Only sheer ignorance had her lurching forward through the wild grasses stretched about her, their once bright postures now weighed down by several drops of rain pulling them towards the earthen ground below. Mishu planned to book it to Ecruteak as swiftly as possible, though some kids pressed by her in the opposite direction grumbling about some impassible tree. “Do they not have a Pokémon with the move Cut?” She wondered aloud.
Silvester seemed like a decent child; all things considered. He passed along a powerful move that helped one navigate their way through the deepest reaches of Ilex Forest. Without his help, many places along the way would have proved impassable due to the trees that blocked the path. Mishu found it odd, then, that some passersby would take note or mention of such obstacles unless they’d stumbled upon the heart of this great city by other means.
Blondie skidded alongside her trainer with a wide toothy grin. The closer they kept along the trails to other individuals, the less threatened she felt of other trespassers of the wild variety charging after them. This would be short-lived, however, as soon even Mishu parted ways with the other trainers, pressing through a tangle of wild grasses towards another path in hopes of finding her way to the possibly ‘ancient’ city.

The heavy rains subsided. They left a dense fog in their wake, whose translucent veil stretched throughout the grassy terrain, obscuring everything around Mishu and her team. Strange silhouettes danced on the open breeze, some humanoid by design as the local citizens slowly crawled back out of their houses, no longer afraid of the weather. She watched, golden amber orbs burning quietly through the dreary day, and moved carefully onwards towards their next grand adventure.
A loud shrill overhead caused Mishu to pause in her tracks. Was it another wild Pokemon who took offense to their travels along the open routes around Johto? She craned her neck, shielding her eyes from the glare of the mighty sun with one hand. Something large and imposing dived in the air, spiraling around in large circles. It seemed to search below as though it were a buzzard hunting for carrion to feast itself upon.
Heart immediately swooped in; her large midnight blue wings now black thanks to the obscurity lent by the fog. She screeched, her loud voice a booming feat that could not be ignored. Who was challenging them?! She would remain ever-present a diligent and faithful fighter, with sharp claws and a powerful beak to drive her opponent away at once. “I defend trainer. Protect. You go before I send you off!” She hissed in a loud trill.
Pidgeotto scoffed, patting one wing against its chest with a flip of its head. The long red feathers adorned on the top of its skull fluttered back behind its head magnificently. Heart wouldn’t catch sight or sound, thanks to the fog that clung in the open air. “You dare challenge me?! I am Pidgeotto, King of my Clan! We are the Fearsome Fliers of Route 34 and Route 35 collectively! Everything we see, we own! It it you, dear avian companion, who should be sent off!” Pidgeotto spoke boldly, kicking its sharp talons out and clawing the air to add emphasis.
Heart pounded her wings against the winds that howled around her. Sharp eyes like fire itself burned with animosity as she stared at the other bird. Pidgeotto remained a fiend in her eyes, aiming to blockade their efforts and proving itself to be a bully of the skies around the areas it inhabited. “Skies not just yours. Skies for all who fly.” There was a certain Pidgey that aided Heart when she was merely an egg, and for that Pidgey she held a large debt of gratitude. That gratitude would not be shared with its kindred, if their hearts remained as tainted and impure as this one.
“Stand down. Let us pass. Or I make you stand down.” Heart sent a final warning to the other avian, who only puffed its rich cream-colored chest feathers up and laughed. “You?!” It laughed, pointing a wing at Heart for emphasis. “Make me?! I’d like to see you try!” As a powerful gust of wind tore through the grass, causing them to dance in erratic patterns, both birds tore through the air after each other.
“Heart, please be careful!” Mishu shouted, though her words were drowned out by the loud calls of the two birds of prey locked in combat. Heart clapped her wings together feverishly, sending powerful blasts of air hurling in Pidgeotto’s direction. She was hoping to snatch the other bird clear out of the skies and send it flying off in some other direction. If it refused to let them pass on amicable terms, Heart considered that she had no other options left but to force Pidgeotto’s wings instead. No matter what, she would not let the wild avian harm her trainer.
