The heat of summer was giving way to the falling leaves of autumn when Trixie stepped into the National Park once again. At her side was Faye, the mischievous Ralts looking for some playmates to have fun with... and maybe play a few pranks on, if she was being totally honest. The little fairy Pokemon shuffled alongside Trixie, her short legs having trouble keeping up with the girl's long strides, but she would not be carried - the teenage trainer was not nearly that generous to her Pokemon, even the younger ones, and especially not if it would make her look too cute or girly.

Finally Faye would catch a break when Trixie stopped in front of a huge patch of tall grass. "What do you suppose will be in there? We should take our time to search for the rare ones..." But Faye was in no mood for dilly-dallying, and without further ado, she stepped right in and started wandering off in a random direction. Trixie would have to force her way through the stalks in order to keep up, her long legs at a disadvantage now that she had to push aside the grass that Faye could maneuver through with ease.

Many pairs of eyes would stare at them from all directions. What Pokemon would step forward to encounter the pair first...?

A rotund Pokemon was rushing, as fast as its little legs could carry it. Whap! It slammed into Trixie's leg, and looked up at her with beady cyan eyes. She thought the pattern on its shell somewhat resembled a Ledyba, except that it was yellow instead of red, and the dots on its back flashed in strange patterns. A very odd shell indeed. It was already backing away, trying to find a way around her, but Trixie blocked its path. Whatever the exotic Pokemon was and whatever was going on with its shell, it had to be a bug! And therefore something that she could catch for the contest!

"Faye, let's use a Hypnosis, then hit it with Draining Kiss!" The Ralts smiled and lifted her hands. Rings of eerie purple energy shot out of them at the Dottler, attempting to make it too drowsy and sluggish to fight back. Regardless of the outcome, the psychic Pokemon would then attempt to run over and kiss the insectoid Pokemon on... the spot where it would have had a nose, had it been a person. What with it lacking a nose, she had to settle for between the eyes instead. Trixie watched with crossed fingers.

Unfortunately, the Dottler was too clever to fall for Faye's tricks. Trixie watched as the bug Pokemon hunched down, closed its eyes, and simply let the waves of psychic energy bounce off its shell. Rather than attack, it seemed content to set up a mystical screen to bolster its defenses even more. Even as Faye rushed in and attacked, the Dottler shrugged off the hit with a surprising amount of resilience, before shaking its body back and forth, sending Faye rolling backward in the struggle. The little Ralts shook herself as she climbed to her feet, squeaking something back at the rotund insect that Trixie could not understand, but sounded like insults.

"It's not over yet, Faye! Try hitting it again!" With the sleeping spell appearing to be a bust, Faye toddled over on her little feet and attempted to plant another smooch on the Dottler, which would create glowing yellow waves of energy, returning some vitality to herself. Trixie then withdrew a Sport Ball from her bag and let it fly at the insect's geometric frame. Hopefully it wouldn't hit Faye too hard in retaliation. She was not about to make an exit from the Bug-Catching Contest without at least catching a Pokemon!

The bug's stubbornness would have been impressing Trixie, if it didn't drive her mad first. Faye kissed it again, a successful attack that sent it shuddering and manifesting another defensive barrier, and when it popped out of her Pokeball it did nothing but continue to defend, the Dottler surrounded on three sides by psychic walls now. If it kept this up it might become completely untouchable. There had to be a way to weaken its walls! "Try a Hypnosis again?" the young trainer offered with a shrug, and Faye attempted to circle around to the (relatively) undefended rear end of the insect Pokemon, and sent out hypnotic waves from her hands again. Following this, Trixie threw another Sport Ball.

"Agh! Stubborn bug!" Trixie exclaimed as the Dottler broke out of yet another Sport Ball. "C'mon, Faye, we'll get it eventually!" Somehow, thrashing about in its sleep had gotten it to slowly wake again. Even the fun-loving Faye was suppressing a yawn as the battle seemed to drag on with no end in sight, her foe still unable to attack but showing no signs of dropping either.

The insect Pokemon, still groggy and disoriented, would hardly know what was coming its way as the Ralts sent another wave of energy shooting out of her hands, trying to put the bug back to sleep, and hopefully for longer this time! Then Trixie withdrew another Ball from her bag and let it fly.

Once again the bug was put to sleep, almost as soon as it had woken it. It closed its eyes and started snoring heavily, a small snot bubble coming out the front of its face where a nose should be. Trixie crossed her fingers as the Sport Ball flew and sucked the Dottler inside. It wiggled once...

Twice...

Three times...

Ding! The older teen breathed a sigh of relief as the ball clicked shut, signaling a successful capture. She walked over and picked it up where it had fallen in the grass.

"Thank Arceus..." She was too frazzled, and relieved, to be excited about this capture. At least she wouldn't be leaving the Bug-Catching Contest empty-handed. Faye was in somewhat higher spirits, having been playing about with the bug seemingly the entire time, and she celebrated her victory by... rapidly disappearing? Trixie blinked as the Ralts vanished before her eyes, only to feel a sudden thump on her head, and see the psychic fae dangling upside-down in front of her face, from atop her head.

"How did you learn to do that?" The Ralts simply chirruped her name in response.

"Never mind. There's still time in the contest. Let's get going and see if we can catch another Pokemon." Trixie would once again stride through the tall grass, with Faye riding atop her head like a queen aboard a palanquin. The warm sun shone down on them as they made their way across the park, keeping their eyes peeled for any bugs that were still in hiding from the myriad trainers who Trixie could already see rushing to turn in their catches.

Faye would tug on Trixie's hair as she spotted something in the tall grass, causing the girl to turn her head in that direction and take a look. What she would see was a perfectly round spot that had been trampled down in the grass, and a sunbeam shining on top of it. Laying in the grass was a Pokemon, perhaps a worm of some sort, though Trixie couldn't tell based on the way it was curled up. It seemed to be content to enjoy the sunshine for its own sake, and did not even look in the direction of the pair as they approached.

Just when they were almost right on top of it, it turned toward them blearily, as if it was slow to recognize that what it was looking at was a human and not an unusually tall Pinsir. "Should we be quiet now, Faye... maybe another Hypnosis?" Trixie whispered to the Ralts. Faye mimicked the same pose as she had with the Dottler, clasping her hands together before shooting out another series of eerie blue and purple rings. They drifted lazily across the meadow in the Sewaddle's direction. Regardless of whether the attack succeeded in putting the bug to sleep or merely startling it into action, Trixie would retrieve another Sport Ball from her pack and let it fly.

While Faye was quick, the Sewaddle was quicker. With surprising speed, the bug Pokemon launched itself at the Ralts perched on Trixie's head, causing the trainer to instinctively duck - and Faye to go flying from the caterpillar's Tackle. She bounced hard, her Hypnosis attack going haywire as the psychic waves dispersed harmlessly into the sky. Trixie was digging through her pack for a Sport Ball as the Sewaddle rallied to its feet - its peaceful sunbathing had been disturbed, and these interlopers were going to pay for it!

The girl trainer threw a Sport Ball, but the bug was too nimble, and Trixie's throw went wide as the insect Pokemon flung itself forward again. It landed a clean hit, slamming into Faye, and the little fairy was looking much the worse for wear. "It's not worth it, Faye - let's get out of here!" Trixie had to make the call to retreat. She scooped up Faye into her hands, and the Ralts closed her eyes, her body glowing white, before the white light engulfed both Pokemon and trainer and they vanished from view.

When Trixie could see again, she realized they were in an entirely different area of the park - there was no tall grass to be seen, but trees and shrubs abounded. "Where are we? I sure hope we didn't go out of bounds." She retrieved a Potion from her bag and, with a few sprays on the Ralts' cuts and bruises, she looked almost as good as new. It was then that the pair realized they were not alone...
