Let bygones be bygones? Never. Even as Freya managed to fetch Bernie’s medication, helping the old man so that he could remain on his feet, he kept her at arm’s length. She was winning over his trust, slowly turning things around so that he could understand the error of his ways. “Thank you.” The tone was indifferent, yet genuine. It was a difficult thing for the old man to completely stuff away his emotions, especially before there was a culprit that he could hang on a cross like some messiah sent down to earth.
When they flushed out the culprit though, and washed it far down stream, Bernie’s eyes widened in alarm. He mistook Sudowoodo at first for one of his berry trees. Immediately, the old man rushed into his shed and came back out with… a paddle? No canoe. No boat of any kind. Not even a small two-by-four piece of wood to try and float on. “Hang on there Oran Berry Tree Number 70, daddy’s comin’! Daddy’s comin’!” Bernie rushed past Freya, lost in his confused fear of losing all his crops. “Don’t leave me just ye- what?”
And then he sputtered to a stop as Freya approached, explaining to him about something known as a ‘Sudowoodo’ or a false tree. Paddle dropped on the ground, face flustered, Bernie’s eyes scanned all the other trees around him. And he blushed, a deep cherry red streaking across his cheeks from embarrassment. “Oh…so that’s not one o me Oran Berry trees… I must be a plump fool, huh?” He laughed. “Lemme thank ye, please. Come, come…”
Bernie would lead Freya to his house. If she refuses, well… He had his ways. His ornery, stubborn, follow her until the end of time until she agreed to let him make it up to her, ways. Unless she liked a permanent, ornery traveling partner, she would come around to hear Bernie out. Inside his house, he would fetch a small Hidden Machine, along with a few berries. “Here…this is fer all ye hard work. These berries are the best I’ve been able to produce so far. And there here’s Rock Climb. Quite handy for scaling tall things, really…” Bernie laughed.
