This delay had gone on long enough. It was high time that someone dealt with the people obstructing Route 32, interfering with travelers, springing out of the bushes to challenge trainers to battle, and generally being a nuisance. The most recent reports trickling into the Pokemon Center were of a gang of schoolchildren who had unceremoniously kicked the Fishermen out of their favorite fishing holes, insisting that they would not move until all of them were defeated. Many of the local fishers discovered to their dismay that their first-form Water-types were no match for the species owned by some of the latter challengers, returning to the Pokemon Center in low spirits. Nurse Joy was getting overwhelmed by the sudden surge in traffic, and she pleaded with Trixie (along with anyone else who would listen) for help.
For Trixie, it sounded like an exciting challenge. Her team had managed to defeat an Ursaring, after all; how tough could a bunch of kids be? Even so, she had to evaluate her team carefully. Scrolling through the entries on her PC, she finally settled on a group that she felt could use some more training - both for the challenges immediately ahead, as well as for her eventual confrontation with Gym Leader Bugsy when she finally made her way through Union Cave. Lycaon was on point, as with last time, and the little pup yelped merrily as she anticipated demonstrating her hunting prowess once again. She leaped up and gave Frederick a lick on the chin as he was sent back to Prof. Elm's lab, the Scyther having earned a well-deserved rest after his close encounter with the Ursaring.
"You sure about this, Lycaon?" Trixie said as the duo took a stroll toward the jetty that was now being dubbed Nugget Pier. "I won't be able to catch you if you fall into the water, you know." The Houndour merely snarled at the waves coursing across the top of the water and the bubbles that rose to the surface as various fish Pokemon went about their lives, blissfully unconcerned with the storm that was about to erupt above. In Lycaon's mind, she was willing to take on all comers - no matter how much of an advantage they thought they had over her! Fish fried just as well as any other meat.
It wasn't long before Trixie heard a shout from up ahead, and saw a schoolboy in a wide-brimmed hat, a white t-shirt, and shorts standing in front of her. She recognized the butterfly net and bag he carried; they looked similar to some accessories she had seen in Kent's bedroom, marking the boy as a Bug Catcher. With his hands on his hips and his feet spread wide in an intimidating stance, it looked like he wasn't intending to let her pass anytime soon. His face was set in a glare, and behind him, Trixie could see at least three or four other teens and children getting ready to unleash their Pokeballs.
"So, you're the kids who have been making all this trouble for the Fishermen?" Trixie called out, with a smirk on her face. "Well, I'm Trixie Hayworth, from Celadon City, and I accept your challenge! Bring it on, all of you!" Lycaon barked in enthusiastic agreement, flames already licking at the corners of her teeth. It seemed that luck would be on their side, at least this time. There would be no need to devise an elaborate strategy for this opponent; whichever Pokemon the Bug Catcher would happen to send out, she was ready to toast it on the spot with a well-aimed Fire Fang.

The old and ornery men who usually gathered around the fishing jetties were left to run away and abandon their favored fishing spots. The kids laughed at the notion, easily whooping the butts of trainer and traveler alike who thought that they could step foot on their pier. Some of the kids in their ranks were successful winners along the way, though upon the completion of beating their fellow teammates, they were presented with a better prize than the original ones the troupe would have offered and greedily accepted. When Trixie stepped up as yet another trainer who thought they had what it took, the children all turned their heads around as though they were on a swivel and glared. “You think you have what it takes to beat us, miss?” Blake scoffed, looking to his small ladybug as it fluttered on the gentle breeze. Even through the dense fog that surrounded much of Violet City, Blake could easily pick out the punk-looking teen who stood as an adversary along the way. “I just hope you packed plenty of potions. You’re going to need it.” He scoffed. Blake nodded his head to his buggy friend, who immediately fluttered up into the air with a bright determination on her face. “We’re the Nugget Gang! If you can defeat all of us, then we’ll give you a prize. But if you can’t, then you leave our pier forever. Got it?” Blake spat on the ground with a laugh. “Ready, Flutter? On a foggy day like this, there’s only one move that’s better than the rest. Use your Swift!” Blake cheered on as Ledyba soared up high into the air. Lycaon moved first, immediately soaking her fangs in a harsh blaze of glory. When she rushed after Blake’s bug, Ledyba would only soar up higher into the air whilst shedding several stars from her body. The chase way on, with sharp fangs that snapped after the small beetle, only to get a face full of brightly colored stars that dazzled through the dense fog. Eventually, Lycaon was able to snatch her opponent out of the air and bite down with a powerful crunch, slapping the barely moving bug on the ground with ease. “Flutter, hang in there girl! We can’t let them win that easily!” Blake called to his bug, who only ‘thumbs upped’ him with one of her legs as she slowly climbed back onto her ‘feet’. Despite the fog that rolled in off the water and shrouded the air around the pier, Lycaon's fiery fangs hit home, snatching the bug out of the air and clamping down on her hard shell. The Ledyba was noticeably battered as she managed to recover enough to smack the Houndour with a shower of stars that seemed to hone in on her no matter how much she tried to dodge. Trixie's canine yelped as the sharp points of the stars left marks in her flesh. While both Pokemon seemed the worse for wear, it was clear that Lycaon was ahead, rolling back to her feet easily as the Ledyba struggled up, barely able to "thumbs-up" her trainer with a single raised leg in response to his urgent encouragement. Despite the Bug Catcher's insistence that Trixie wouldn't win easily, the teen girl was confident that she knew better.
"Good job, Lycaon!" Trixie cheered on her Pokemon. "Now, let's finish this with a Bite attack!" The Houndour would bark intimidatingly before racing headlong at her foe. First dodging left then right in an attempt to confuse the slower ladybug, once she was near enough, she closed the distance with a final powerful leap and attempted to crunch down with her jaws to deliver the finishing blow.

"Got nuthin' to say? Flutters use—" but before he could call out another flimsy attempt of an attack, his ledyba was swiftly felled. Oh noooo! He gasped in shock and horror. "Flutters!" He rushed forward and scooped up his ledyba, teary-eyed. The next kid stepped forward and wiped his nose with the back of his arm, throwing an aipom out with a lifted chin, "We keep tellin' ya to replace that stupid ledyba with somethin' stronger. That's why you're at the bottom, Blake. You gotta get tougher so we can show these grown ups that they can't mess with the Nugget Gang and get away with it!" Some of the other kids cheered. Before Bug Catcher Blake could even finish his sentence, Lycaon had snatched up Flutters in her jaws before spitting her out like yesterday's leftovers. She howled in triumph and ran around in circles on the pier, barking for joy at her first solo victory. She could feel it - she was becoming stronger! Soon she would be the most powerful Pokemon on Trixie's team, and all would bow before her as their leader! So what if it was just a weak bug - a mere stepping stone on her path to greatness. Surely her trainer could see it too. The Houndour ran back to Trixie, who greeted her with a pat on the head and a determined smirk. "One down!" she called out to the assembled children. "So! Which of you is next?"
Trixie almost felt bad for the boy as even his other teammates were mocking him for his defeat and his weak Pokemon. But a challenge was a challenge, and she was determined to see it through. She could hardly be backing down now, when a quick glance at the crowd told her there were four more opponents she had to defeat. A schoolboy stepped forward, and part of her bristled when he called her a grown up by implication - it wasn't so long ago that she was a kid herself! Ugh, her parents were the grown ups. She wasn't ready to join them for a while yet.
The boy introduced himself as Ross, and his purple monkey as Chitters. Now this was a Pokemon she'd never seen before. A scan with her Pokedex told her that she was facing a species called Aipom, that lived in tall trees and used its strange hand-like tail much more deftly than its actual hands. "So, this one likes throwing hands... I got the perfect opponent for you then!" Lycaon was ready to run back into action when Trixie recalled her in a flash of red light, causing the Houndour to yelp in surprise as she was sucked back into her spherical capsule.
"Eastwood, I choose you!" The next Pokeball the teen threw released a Pancham from containment, who took a stout stance on the pier to solidify his footing before locking eyes with his opponent. He lifted his hands in a martial manner, palms turned outward toward the Aipom. "Cham..." the panda Pokemon intoned, his steady breaths slowly puffing out in the cold foggy air.
Trixie pointed dramatically at Ross's monkey before commanding Eastwood to "Use Arm Thrust!" The Pancham cautiously approached his nimble opponent, one step at a time. He knew that he was unlikely to chase down the Aipom in a battle of pure speed and it would be more advantageous to wait for his foe to approach him first. To the outside observer, it might appear that Trixie's Pokemon was being disobedient, but she knew Eastwood well enough by now that he would never shirk from a battle once it had started.
Suddenly, the Pancham would pick up speed and meet the Aipom head-on, thrusting out his hands in a flurry of motion in an attempt to strike the simian on the pressure points all over its body. After the exchange, he would break off and take another stance, this time with his arms spread wide to receive an incoming attack. Trixie recognized this as a smooth transition into a Circle Throw, a move that would attempt to bodily grab ahold of the Aipom and slam it into the ground - hopefully in a way that would pin it down and make it unable to escape. It would just remain to be seen whether speed or power would carry the day...

Youngster Ross was a cocky young boy and he rubbed his nose at the appearance of the panchamp. "What a wimpy looking pokemon," he mocked, clearly trying to get into his opponent's head with his smack talk. His hands propped on his hips as he jeered at Trixie, urging the others to get in on the act. "Chitters, throw some dirt in that wimp's face then scratch it up real good." The aipom was a quick creature, leaping swiftly from side-to-side, as if to evade those hands that the pancham was throwing, whipping its tail around to throw a fistful of sand right into his face. The pancham staggered back just a step before shooting out a flurry of fists that the aipom was too close to quite avoid. The first and third strike were on target, but so was the aipom's scratches. Maybe it should have leapt back to put some distance between them, because the pancham grabbed Chitters and slammed the aipom onto the ground hard, swiftly ending the battle. Ross screeched and a girl walked up behind him with a shake of her head. "You should talk less, train more," she told him primly. "Anyway, it's my turn. Skippy, let's do this!"

Just as with the first battle, Ross's Pokemon tried to put up a fight, but at the end of the day it was no contest. Despite the sand in his eyes, Eastwood was able to catch the Aipom by the tail, the monkey having gotten too close to be able to dodge away in time. With one decisive throw, the battle was over. Chitters had swirls in his eyes when Ross angrily recalled his Pokemon and screeched like... well, like a monkey, Trixie thought. She frowned as a girl in a green dress pushed her way to the fore and chastised the boy ahead of her. Trixie already didn't like her. Despite being in the outdoors, there was not a speck of mud on her dress, and the prissy voice she spoke in didn't help things. It reminded Trixie too much of her past... of a past she had long tried to leave behind.
Well, no time like the present to beat this girl down here and now.
Trixie didn't need her Pokedex to confirm that this was the evolved form of Hoppip - their body similarities were too obvious, which meant she could use her familiarity with Boing to her advantage. With the Skiploom hovering in the air, Eastwood wasn't going to be able to get in close, while Trixie knew it could pelt him with plant pollen and wind from a distance. So she made the decision to return her Pancham and send out her Houndour again. "You remember her, don't you?" she said with a smirk at the defeated Blake, who was standing off to the side trying to cheer his friends on. "Lycaon, round two! There's your target!" A single finger pointed up in the sky, where Skippy's flower-head spun in place, the two combatants content to size up their foes before making any rash moves.
It was Lycaon who broke the stalemate first, a blur of fire coating her fangs as she rushed forward then jumped upward at the Skiploom, attempting to chomp down on it the way she had with the slower ladybug. Trixie could tell from Estee's confidence that it wouldn't be as easy as before, though. Talk less, train more. Well, this was as good a training as any. "Don't let up! Hit it with Fire Fang until it drops!" she called out, and Lycaon heard, easily landing on the pier after her first attack, circling around, and making another flying leap as the Skiploom responded with its own wide array of moves.

Estee huffed. There weren’t many trainers that managed to make it through her teammates. While she should have appreciated the work Trixie put to get to where she was, Estee simply wasn’t impressed. “Skippy, that’s the pup you’re going to pummel into the ground. Got it?” The happy-go-lucky flower-headed plant Pokemon floated up on a gentle breeze and chirped with glee. “With pleasure!”“Use your Stun Spore. That ought to slow them down.” Estee smirked. Her eyes remained firm and focused on the battle. The large green cottonweed floated overhead as Lycaon jumped on her hindlegs and tried her best to snatch the plant Pokemon out of the air. She sprinkled strange, paralytic spores from her bright yellow flower as it spun wildly on the top of her hair. Lycaon would breathe it in, letting those spores bury deep in her blood. “Oh, good. Now follow up with a powerful Tackle!” Just as Estee commanded her Pokemon to attack, Lycaon snatched the cottonweed out of the air with her sharp fire-glazed fangs. Skippy cried frightfully and began punching and kicking Lycaon in the face. She was desperate to escape! Though, no matter how hard Skippy kicked or punched, Lycaon only buried her fangs further until the plant went completely limp. “Oh, bummer. You won’t beat my friend, though!”Just then, a confident young man with dark green hair stepped up. He flashed a charismatic smile that seemed to ooze with an ego that seemed full of himself. “Hey babe. Ready to see what a real guy can and his Pokemon an do?” He called out a small aquatic Pokemon who hopped up and down on the tip of his feet. “Ready, Aqua? The Skiploom, finally exhausted from the combined might of tooth and fire, fell limp in Lycaon's jaws and was promptly spat out onto the pier before being returned to her Pokeball. Trixie's Houndour howled in triumph as she bested another foe, but her trainer could clearly see that she was worse for wear. Not only were her skull-plate and cheeks battered from repeated hits to the face, but the strange spores she had inhaled also slowed down her movement even as she trotted back over to Trixie and licked her hand.
The next opponent would step forward, and unlike the others, this one was a teenage boy probably a few years younger than herself. In the past, she might have found his cockiness impressive, but Trixie had grown and struggled over the course of her journeys in Johto, and she simply sighed and rolled her eyes at him. Oh, please, I'm way out of your league. The Marill that he sent out - which Trixie recognized as the evolved form of her own Sprite - was more concerning, though; Lycaon turned around and tried to bare her fangs at the foe, but let out a hacking cough instead. She could only fight off the paralysis for so long and if she faltered at a crucial moment, Trixie knew it would be all over for her in a single blast of water.
"Take a rest," she said, returning the Houndour to her Pokeball. "Sorry, my guy, but four on two's a little harsh odds, even for me. So why don't we make it three?" With that she threw another ball forward, from which emerged a jolly cactus Pokemon carrying a strange pair of shells dangling from the spike on his arm. Vega looked around at the lightly falling snow, the gently trickling stream that was not quite iced over, and the water mouse standing in front of him. There was only one thing to do: widen his eyes, grin at the Marill, and flex his arms!
"No, Vega! We're here to fight, not to flirt!" Trixie's exasperation was showing. Males! Why were they all like this?
With her Cacnea distracted and off his game, it was a trivial matter for the Marill to make the first move, which finally succeeded in getting his attention. "Use Magical Leaf, Vega!" Trixie commanded, and the plant Pokemon finally started spinning his arms in wide circles, the darker-colored spikes where his hands would be glowing as he did so. First from one hand, then from the other, shimmering leaves would manifest from the spikes, floating in the air. The Cacnea then swung each arm forward, the leaves shooting forth and converging on their target as he did so.

"Why can't we do both, babe~?" Doug replied with a wink, still oozing self-importance. He pointed at his grassy foe, undeterred from his path of conquest. "Aqua, slow that overgrown thorn in our side with a powerful blast from your bubblebeam!" Obviously if the strongest thing he could do was water the cacnea, he wasn't exactly much of a threat, but he sure acted like he still had a path to victory. Vega launched those leaves at the marill, who responded with a flurry of bubbles. The two attacks met and the leaves instantly over powered the bubbles, slamming into Aqua and knocking the marill of their feet in an instant. Barely hanging on, Aqua curled up, as if to slam Vega off the peer with a rollout, but a second magical leaf did just the opposite! The marill flew back with a splash, leaving Ace Trainer Doug with grit teeth and a huff. "Well. I suppose you aren't THAT cute." He crossed his arm as a Lass flounced past him. "You are SUCH a sore loser, Doug. You should let us girls handle things. Fluffy, we're up next!" The Lass posed cutely next to her furret, ready to settle the score. "And we won't lose!"

Once Vega was able to get his head in the game, he proved to be more than a match for the Marill. While he couldn't stop all the bubbles from getting through his flurry of leaves, resulting in a few popping against his barrel-shaped body, he more than made up for it with the one-two punch that sent the Marill first rolling backward and then, as it staggered and tried to recover, flying off the side of the pier with a splash. Its blue tail acted like a buoy that bobbed it back to the surface, but it was clear it was out for the count.
Doug was in a huff over the loss, any attraction he might have had to Trixie seeming to have immediately dissipated. As if to cement the impression that she wasn't "THAT cute," Trixie pulled down her lower lid and stuck her tongue out at him. But she fixed her face in a hurry when a sassy Lass stepped to the fore. This girl appeared to be the ringleader of the little pier gang, and she derided her predecessor as a sore loser before sending out a long, striped mammalian Pokemon. Girl and Furret would pose cutely in perfect sync - as if to show how it was really done.
"Finally! So once I beat you, I'll be the champion of the pier? Bring it, then!" Trixie would strike her own cool pose and look to Vega, who to her dismay, had just acknowledged the presence of two more cute girls and was back to flexing his arms. "On second thought... Return." She sucked him back into his Pokeball and looked over her options before sending out Eastwood. The stalwart Pancham immediately formed his paws into a striking stance, and Trixie did her best to imitate it - though, being totally untrained in any form of martial arts, she was sure she looked a little ungainly while doing so.
The traveling trainer regarded the Lass, and the other schoolchildren, with a quizzical expression while their Pokemon were squaring up for battle. "So... what's your deal, anyway?" she asked. "What's in it for you to travel all the way out here and bully the Fishermen away? Are there really rare wild Pokemon you were hoping to catch? Maybe some buried treasure?" For the most part, the Fishermen had insisted there was nothing much to be found beyond Magikarp and Tentacool. But then again, if people were hiding a treasure, isn't that exactly what they would say? The question had been gnawing at her ever since she first stepped onto this pier and she wasn't about to let the feeling of doing a good dead get in the way of her curiosity.
As Eastwood and Fluffy began to move, Trixie would take note of the Furret's long, flowing body and its graceful movements. She couldn't say she had ever seen a Pokemon like it before - it was somewhere in between a cat and a snake. With its speed, it was easily able to land the first hit and draw backward before Eastwood even had a chance to strike. "We can't let it keep getting away with this. Can you focus on crippling its movement? Go for the legs!" The next time Fluffy tried to attack, Eastwood would drop to the wooden floor and sweep his legs outward, attempting to knock the Furret's out from under it and put it off balance. He would adopt this strategy for the remainder of the battle, until either himself or the Furret could take no more and would succumb to its battle wounds.
