This was it. The moment of truth. Make or break. Only two outcomes were flashing through Faulkner's mind at this time. The best possible outcome was that Snorunt missed considering how blind it had become from all the mud splattered into its face. The other outcome was loss. He disliked the prospect of being presented with yet again another defeat but at this point he was beginning to resign himself to it. The tension in the air between the two matched opponents was thick enough to be cut with a knife. Faulkner looked desperately to his beloved Pidgeotto and realised there was no way it could perform Roost first due to how slowed down it had become with frost. Faulkner fluffed the bangs of his hair and tried to dismiss his concerns. "I never expected to face someone at this stage in the game who had access to a move that dealt damage and lowered my bird Pokemon's power." He grimaced and realised that he didn't quite like the taste of his own medicine. "However! My Pidgeotto is strong off to survive these chilling breezes and your choice of Pokemon is getting blinder by the round." He stopped talking but his voice echoed in his mind. "I just need to keep at this!"
As Sharada continued her assault against him, Faulkner's eyes narrowed on the attack Snorunt was conjuring. Every fibre of his being was now praying for the attack to miss. He had worked so hard lowering its accuracy that he felt, nay, he DESERVED to win for thinking of such a clever strategy. The Snorunt jumped and down on the spot and as if by magic a pelt of snow like lumps were lobbed at the Pidgeotto. Even if it wanted to, the Pidgeotto was not able to evade the attack. Despite being slightly off from predicting the Pidgeotto would move, the fact it stayed in place meant the balls of snow landed with fierce precision. The first of the small snow dumplings smacked against the bird's left wing, the next then landed directly on its proud chest and the last splatter of snow blinded it directly in the eyes. Faulkner cried out with despair as he realised where his Pokemon had been hit.

"PIDGEEEEEOOOOTTTOOOOOO!!!!!" Although the battle had ended literally at that second, the young gym leader sprinted forward with great abandon to cradle his Pidgeotto who had flopped to the floor in defeat. He held it tightly towards him in a weak attempt to warm his Pokemon up from the freezing blows it had endured.
Yet again, he and his loyal Pokemon and suffered another crushing loss. Although he had said to himself he would continue on trying until he got at least one victory this defeat felt difficult for him. If he could have just finished off the Snorunt he would have felt he proved something and knew his tactic was something he could depend on. He looked up to Sharada and realised despite being beaten he had to regain his composure and hand out the prizes upon his defeat as his duty. As he stood, he aimed his Pokeball to return his Pidgeotto solemnly and mumbled out. "Pidgeotto... Return." His Pokemon defeated, he looked to his opponent. The distance between them wasn't too far but he made no effort in getting there quickly. Instead he moved step by step until he stood before her. "I guess there's a lot more to Pokemon battles than mud slinging in the enemy's face. I let my Pokemon down due to my weak tactic..." He sighed and shrugged. "Being a gym leader sure is hard. My dad just had the knack for it. Always good at whatever he did..." His hand had clenched and was shaking at his side agitatedly. He paused, regained his composure once more and looked Sharada dead in the eye. "I think I learnt something from this battle. I need to face up to my responsibility as a gym leader and find stronger methods and seek new friends to fight alongside my loyal birds." He delved into his jacket and withdrew a number of items. "Here, in accordance with obtaining victory over the first gym challenge I hereby award you these." He shoved a number of things into Sharada's hand.
"The first is your winnings. There's £1560 there so don't go and spend it all at once. Secondly, I present you with the Zephyr Badge. This is a significant symbol as it declares you have bested me in battle and will be useful much later on when you head for Victory Road. Last but not least..." He handed her a CD in a protective case and smiled. "This is a technical machine. It's the annoying move I kept using to heal my Pokemon. Give it to an avian Pokemon and watch as they heal up to half of their health in a blink of an eye!" He finished speaking and pointed to the elevator. "Good luck in your journey... I have a lot to think over now." He moved away from her and retreated for contemplation. Sharada was now free to go but her Mareep, Pinky was acting differently. Suddenly it began glowing with a strange light!
