I think people should get a present if it's there birthday. Or if they had a birthday during the month. Sorry, if this has already been addressed, I didn't see any info on it. The Mod will give the person something random.
The person doesn't pick what they want. It's given at random weather it's an item or even a Pokemon, it's random. Just an idea I had. If no one thinks this is a good idea, I understand and will keep my mouth shut and go along with it. Just putting in my two cents wort here.

We did actually have this in place a few years back. I believe this is how I got my Togepi and Snorunt and Joe got his Elekid and Koffing. I suppose it was stopped so that people wouldnt gain rare Pokemon so easily or something along those lines, that and the forum just grew and shrunk and grew again etc. *shrugs* It was a nice idea back in the day but I think it is frowned upon now.
Perhaps we could start giving a single Rare Candy out for someone's birthday or a random item like you suggested (Pokemon most likely not) but for right now it's not exactly a priority plan. Thanks for bringing this up though, we'll consider it when more important matters have died down.

Oh, I see. Well I guess that's understandable. Don't want people having an excuse to get freebie Pokemon, after all.

As Morri said, I benefited from the scheme but it did take a 180 degree turn from what i'm seeing in the staff boards. One reason I believe that was discussed was due to the sheer size of the forum. When the scheme had been placed the forum was a lot different from what you see now. For instance, it was but a small community of 10 odd people. And now that we've got a much larger user base it means that its harder to track in that way. Not only this but now we do have more users we've had to engineer new events and prizes for contests so as to not undermine them, giving out Pokemon would be yet another strain on resources.
I do like the sound of a Rare Candy being handed out on a member's birthday though. It's a nice item as it is but its not anything overly unbalancing. Or, as opposed to that, we could make a whole new item called a Birthday Cake and have it act like a Rare Candy but give it some other beneficiary effects. So e.g. Birthday Cake: Raises a Pokemon level by three and adds +3 happiness.
It'd be once a year and i'd like to think that's still a nice gesture.

One of the reasons it was 'discontinued', so to speak (other than free Pokemon) was because people could lie about their birthdays. What if you were scouting the place out and realized that it does birthday gifts? Sign me up and I was born two days from now! Instant gift! Yaaaaaaay (also I would assume they would go to the effort of creating a character)
Even if what we gave was small and fairly unremarkable, I myself don't like the idea. But I'm used to not getting much for my birthday anyways. ;P

I really like the idea of the Birthday Cake that Joey suggested. I think it's quite a fair gift, without being broken or anything.

The whole lieing about your birthday what Dani pointed out is a really good point. I remember skimming over a few Pokemon forums in the past when advertising this place and seeing the whole, "We have recently opened, be one of the first 30 to join and get a free Pokemon of your choice!" sorta thing what is made to draw members in. Having some sort of birthday gift probably acts as the same type of thing and as Dani said, they get an instant gift right off the bat. Maybe if we did bring this back the option would only be to those we know and trust or hopefully have been active for a few weeks atleast.
And Joe's cake idea is good and all but I think 3 levels is quite a big amount. Well, it'd be better than a Pokemon or a TM or something anyway. Perhaps I could try a little cake sprite at some point.

Oh hah, I actually misread what his cake would do. I thought it said just one level. I think that the cake would be best at +1 level and +3 Happiness, or even +2 levels. I do agree that it should be folks who have been active for at least a few weeks, but I think this is a really great idea.

If you want to give spriting a go then feel free to. I'm just wrangling with Halloween threads at the moment. As for the cake effect itself, I said three levels because it just felt like one was too negligible. With at least three its a noticeable improvement. As Dani pointed out, you will get some people who'll try to abuse this (Can't believe I forgot about those sort of HEY AIN'T THAT A COINCIDENCE ITS MY BIRTHDAY TODAY type of folk) but as opposed to everything else, a couple of levels isn't going to radicalise everything.

We'd need to keep a record of everyone's birthday to make sure they don't change it in the middle of the year too. But I agree with three being too many, I'd be fine with one level at the most personally.

As soon as you sign up you can't change your birthday. It's set in stone so there's no need to keep records and waste labour on all that. For the people who try and be funny and say they're born a century ago or so with a silly combination of day/month then i'd say their disallowed from receiving this birthday gift. If people do try and cheat by saying their birthday is only a couple of days after their sign up then they'll waste it on a relatively low level Pokemon and will then have to wait one whole year to get it again.

Can I give a go on doing the sprite?

Yes, yes, please feel free to~ I personally wouldnt be able to give it a go until the weekend and even then it is Christmas so it's last, last priority for me at the moment. xP And this isnt a bad idea and its fairly simple so it could be done and put into place fairly quickly as long as Dani approves. So yeah, GO GO GO!
As for level wise, I understand that Joe is trying to make it a little different. I dont think anymore than 2 levels though and it should probably be either levels or happiness. As in, it should be either Level +1 Happiness +2 or Level +2 Happiness +1. *shrug*

Hehe alrightie. It's Christmas for me too, so I can't promise I'll have a moment, but I will try my damndest.
Also, I would like to chime in with my agreement of +1 level, +2 happiness.
