Name: Melody Cage Cooper; feel free to call her Mel, Melly, Mels, CC [from "cage cooper"] Cage, Coop, Cooper, Mellers, or anything you think is a nickname. Although don't give her any of that 'sweetie, princess, muffin' crap. She'll kick your arse if you do.
Age: 15 and three quarters - those three quarters are very important! As an aspiring trainer (and future breeder) she believes her age determines her standing in the world.
Gender: Female
Trainer Type: Trainer - wants to become a Breeder when she's defeated the Kanto Elite Four, so levels do not hinder her.
Hometown: Just outside of Cerulean City, Kanto.
Appearance: Melody is more like her mother in appearance than her father. Generally, Melody is short, a little on the extra-lovin’, side (you know, a heathly weight), yet incredibly flexible, with long fingered hands and small feet. She was also graced with her mother’s soft seafoam green eyes, although with this trait she’s got her father’s single flaw; she’s steadily going blind. She’s currently 7% blind in both eyes (her vision is hindered but for the most part other than the slight blurring around the edges, she has almost perfect vision). With this genetic blessing – or curse – Melody takes advantage of everything she has for now, because gradually, she’ll be completely blind.
Regardless of how she’s losing her eyesight, Melody takes advantage of what she has now, and that includes her love of piercings and all things body-image. Since turning fourteen, Melody has pierced her ears four times on each side, and has her nose pierced as well, even though her father has since refused to acknowledge it. Her nose is crooked though, another flaw she earned from her father. Her general bone structure she believes is a flaw; her spine is straight and it hurts to slouch, her shoulders crack when she wakes up in the morning, as well as her knees. Melody can be grateful for what she has but she can add up it’s flaws sevenfold should she be given the chance.
Personality: Quick -> Fair-tempered, relaxed, eager, person-pleaser, insecure, worried, anxious, humorous, independent, hopeful.
Detailed -> Melody isn’t always the most leveled bookshelf in the case; with her weight and annoying blurry vision being a constant frustration and a turn-off for journey buddies, she has learned to take off on her own, thus making her more or less a solo young traveller. She got her fair temperament from her father, the man who never yelled ever in the house, but with that she got his anxiety problems, something she hasn’t faced yet. From her mother she received her naturally insecure and independency flaws but also her weak humor and hopeful outlook, Because she’s still “so young” (as her parents tend to say often) her eagerness and independence are constantly keeping her from seeing the dangers and the badness in the world surrounding her.
But she’s not as innocent as everyone believes; cunning at the very least, Melody knows the right words to say and to use in most situations, thanks to eavesdropping and generally listening in on her parent’s ‘adult’ conversations. Being a female she’s also endured the teasing of her schoolmates and the miscellaneous people on their journeys, and it hasn’t always been the easiest walking away from it all, she takes their words and turns them into personal venom, poisoning her mind and her once strong standing beliefs that “sticks and stones may break her bones but words will never hurt her”. The once near-constant teasing has left a fissure in her personality, very nearly splitting it between innocent and weathered.
History: Melody’s parents Dane and Greta met by chance; it had started oh so innocently, too. Greta was a Ranger that took care of injured or sick wild Pokemon and would adopt them out to passing trainers or breeders, and Dane was one of those trainers. He was constantly chatting with Greta – even before he realized how much he liked her - who in return would slip him a Pokemon or two above his level range, something that had proved to be a challenge, yet a challenge Dane accepted head on. It was the beginning of a beautiful thing. Dane was inconsistent in his visits, but he would often make up for it by giving her a small gift or donating some money for her funding.
Dane was passing her Ranger tent in order to get another Pokemon when he heard the screaming. Charging in, he saw Greta pinned under a man, probably a thief or another Ranger, but Dane only saw red. He released his recently caught Rattata, and as the mouse sunk its teeth into the thief’s leg, Dane saved Greta. Officer Jenny arrested the thief, and well, Greta ended up packing up her Ranger gear for the rest of the year. Horrified that he had lost the best thing that had ever happened to him, Dane told her he’d be happy to help her out as a bodyguard if she would stay.
She stayed.
Eventually, Dane and Greta began dating. It was a slow building romance, with sweet notes and flowers and items. When Dane went to challenge the Kanto Elite four, Greta was in his corner cheering him on. He only got to Bruno, but it was far enough for him. They hung up their gear together and moved to the outskirts of Cerulean City into the house they live in now. Greta no longer does any Pokemon work, instead she takes care of the garden she’s meticulous over. Dane on the other hand continues to train Pokemon –his own or other people’s- from their home.
That was when the accident happened. In one of his training sessions, a rather over-excited Pikachu used flash inside the home. This caused his genetic blindness [genetic because his grandfather was fully blind being born and his father was only half blind his whole life] to be triggered. In a stumbling haze, Dane put all the Pokemon back in what he thought was the correct pokeballs, and fled to the nearest Pokemon center in hopes of finding a referral to a hospital. It was a rather long day for both Dane and Greta: Dane was legally announced blind in one eye, and Greta told him she was pregnant. He also received the news that he would be completely blind before his 75th birthday.
When they went home, Dane went to work – with some friends – on the baby’s new room. Greta didn’t want to know what the sex of the baby was, so they kept to neutral and unisex colors like yellow, cream and white. Eight months they waited for their precious baby. Eight turned to nine, and then to ten. Worried, Greta went to the hospital and ordered a c-section, because she was becoming worried and anxious over the state of her baby. Melody Cage was born almost a month late; but a month late is better than never, and as such her parents loved her even more.
Growing up, Melody wasn’t exposed to Pokémon like most children were. Her parents were careful not to let her catch the bug too early on in life (with her father going blind and her mother not having any proper training outside of being a ranger), so Melody – compared to the rest of the children reared around Pokémon – had a rather boring, safe childhood, but a childhood none the less. She as almost sheltered to a obscene point, her mother steadily growing worried for her daughter’s sake. Melody read books and played with dolls, but as soon as she was taught to speak, she quickly learned how to speak her mind, which included the lack of friends or Pokémon. Greta and Dane were left wondering where this quick talent of speech started, since as far as they both could remember, they were late bloomers.
Melody was six when she met her first Pokémon. Under the not so watchful eye of her less than nice babysitter, they had gone to the park to give her parents some time alone. Melody was playing in the sandbox when she heard its screams. It was a Mankey, and it was trapped in a trap about half an acre from where she sat. She was at the park with her babysitter and she saw the Mankey there, and instinctively she felt like she had to go and safe it. Her mother’s Ranger instincts reared within her, and she tried to free it. Instead she was rewarded with a smack to the face, and a trip to the hospital for scratches on her cheek. They luckily healed fine and didn’t leave scars, and when her father went to catch the Mankey, it had disappeared.
Since that “accident”, Melody was finally given the chance to discover and learn about Pokémon from both her mother and her father, even though the Mankey had emotionally scarred her, bumping her once enthusiastic . She would attend the Pokémon academy in Pewter City when she turned eight. Melody learned the tricks of a Ranger, especially when it came to living off the earth, and from her father she learned more about dealing with troubled Pokemon and how to treat them. Melody was anxious and nervous about it all at first, but as her parents continued to teach her a few hours a day, she eventually got used to the idea that one day, she’d have Pokemon of her own.
Melody soon turned eight, and with that she went off to Pewter City every other day to attend school. This is where most of her ‘flaws’ reared their ugly head. Naturally near-sighted she had to sit in front of the class to see, and with her genetic blindness still lurking around; she didn’t want to strain her eyes too much. So the other students called her a teachers pet; she also had answers to questions the teachers meant to be jokes. This was the beginning of a long and painful four years of school. Melody started school late [most students started at seven years old, while she started at eight], so while she was in school most of her classmates finished and went off on their ‘pokemon adventures’.
Watching her classmates come and go made Melody long for an adventure of her own. At this point she was eleven years old, and was 4% blind, something her father had begun to fear about. He was nearly 50% blind at this point, and it was becoming more and more difficult for him to wander around the house. Melody didn’t let her blindness effect her, but the bullying that happened at school was becoming more of a punishment than she could ever think. Melody was constantly bothering her mother for a Pokémon, or for permission to go to Professor Oak for her first Pokémon, but her mother was done with Pokémon, and as such she kept Melody from getting one.
So, Melody went to her father when she realized her mother was a lost cause. She worked on him steadily, asking him to talk about his journeys and how he met her mother, fawning over how excited she would be if she could see the same things he saw. Melody knew that she was plucking at tender heartstrings (she knew her dad missed the adventure of travelling and seeing new Pokémon), and to be honest, she wasn’t ashamed. It went on like this for months, before she began to plant her seeds in his head. He brought it up with his wife one night after dinner, asking her why she felt that Melody wasn’t allowed to go and experience the same thing they experienced. Instead of it being a quiet, during-dinner-conversation, it blew up.
Melody was grounded for manipulating her father – more like grounded for: “even thinking about going over her head” – and listened to her mother and father fight about it late at night. During the day when she wasn’t at school, there was a cold silence between herself and her mother. She was no longer allowed to speak about Pokemon in the house, and she was forbidden to look at the records her father kept of his journey or. It went on like this for a few years. It wasn’t until Melody turned fifteen did she finally coner her mother and demand to know why she wasn’t allowed to ask or speak about her journey.
It was a long battle of words. Melody and her mother were both brought to tears at some point, and finally – finally! – Melody got what she wanted. Her mother relented and allowed Melody to leave home and go on her adventure, as long as she checked in as often as she could. She also had to go through a mini crash course put together by her mother’s Ranger history, but for the most part, as long as she was safe, Greta would try not to worry too much. Her parents walked her to Pallet Town, and as she walked to Professor Oak’s, they waved and watched their little baby take her first steps into becoming a Trainer.
