Name: Kalani Kapena (goes by Kal)
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Trainer Type: Trainer who specializes in flying-types.
Hometown: Cherrygrove, Johto
Appearance: Kal has naturally dark skin that appears even darker due to the amount of time she spends out in the sun. She has deep brown eyes that are larger than average; her nose and mouth, on the other hand, are rather small. Her bushy hair is so dark brown, it almost looks black, and it is long enough that it almost comes down to her hips. Quite commonly, she tends to wear a small flower or two in her hair. Also, she's skilled at braiding hair in various ways and will often do so to her own. For her age, she is medium-tall in height, and she's in excellent physical shape; her build leans toward muscular.
Kal's typical outfit consists of a tight-fitting tank top and shorts. She carries three brightly colored tank tops; one purple, one yellow, and one green. Her shorts, on the other hand, are colored more neutrally; one pair is black, one is white, and one is a pair of khaki shorts. She is usually rather resistant to cold weather, but on the rare occasion that it gets too cold for her, she has a different outfit to wear. This consists of a blue pull-over hoodie that she'll wear over her usual tank top, and jeans instead of shorts. As for shoes, she prefers to wear sandals, but she will usually wear her plain white sneakers if she has to walk a long distance. Kal is usually too impatient to put on any sort of makeup, but she will wear a little bit on very special occasions. On such occasions, she will also wear a white sundress with pink flower designs on it in place of her normal, more casual outfit. She carries a medium-sized, white backpack that's large enough to carry her items, supplies, and anything else she might need.
Personality: Kal is extremely energetic, talkative, and friendly. She has an optimistic attitude that's very difficult to diminish, even in situations when most others would give up. She has a seemingly boundless amount of energy, which is in part due to her great physical condition, but also in part to her natural personality. She also loves to talk, to the point of being labeled as a "chatterbox" quite commonly, and will talk to just about anyone - or anything - that will listen (or, at least, that won't walk away). She is also usually very kind and willing to help those in need, and rarely holds grudges against others for very long. Because of her outgoing, optimistic, and kind personality, people tend to think of Kal as a natural leader. Despite this, Kal is not very "book smart" - her intelligence is mostly in the field of dealing with people (and Pokemon). Although she'll have trouble winning an argument that's based on logic, she can usually convince people that she's right by winning their hearts rather than their minds.
With Kal's lack of traditional intelligence comes impulsiveness. She is very quick to act, rarely taking time to think before doing so. This reckless side of her has gotten her into trouble on more than one occasion; others often tell her to think more about her actions. Her impulsiveness sometimes causes her to say things that might be hurtful to others without really thinking. Due to her kindness, however, she will quickly and honestly apologize for doing so. Kal is also the type who loves a challenge; refusing one, even if she thinks it's something beyond her abilities, would massively hurt her pride. Because of this aspect of her personality, she often ends up getting injured from physical exertion, but this doesn't really bother her. To Kal, losing is better than "chickening out" or giving up altogether. Kal also has a bit of a resentment for people who are too compliant or docile, and tries to encourage them to challenge authority a little bit more.
Kal has been fascinated by flying-type Pokemon - in particular, the ones that resemble birds - since she was small. She is very knowledgeable when it comes to these Pokemon and will ramble endlessly about them to just about anyone who will listen to her for more than a few minutes. One of the few times you will see her fully relaxed, rather than bursting with energy, is when she's birdwatching. On the other hand, hurting or attempting to hurt a flying-type Pokemon (or really, any type, but flying in particular) in front of Kal is one of the few times you'll see her get angry.
History: Kal was born and raised on a small ranch in the quiet city of Cherrygrove. There, she lived with her parents and her two older sisters. Her sisters were her closest friends in her early life, although she had several friends her age from the city as well. Her parents were a couple of expert Pokemon breeders who specialized in breeding and caring for local Pokemon, rather than using them in battle. Although Kal and her sisters never received a formal education, their parents were very knowledgeable and taught them enough so that they could make their way in the world. Kal's parents were mostly rather kind and caring, but they could be strict sometimes when they needed to be. They expected their children to become breeders like they were, so they could run the small ranch when the parents no longer could. Kal's sisters fully accepted this responsibility, and for a while, so did she.
However, this changed after a certain incident that occurred when Kal was seven years old. One night, she was playing in a small forest close to her home with her sisters when she suddenly found herself separated from them. Lost and afraid, she at first attempted to make her way home on her own, but quickly became even more lost. The night was becoming increasingly darker and colder, and Kal was unsure if she'd ever find her way back. Giving up, she simply slumped down next to a tree and cried, trying to shut out the noises of the nearby wild Pokemon. Her parents, being quite popular and influential in Cherrygrove, had already formed a search party with several others from the town; but Kal, of course, wasn't aware of this at the time. And in the end, this didn't matter, because it wasn't someone from Cherrygrove who ended up finding her.
After Kal had remained in the same place for a couple of hours, a young traveler happened upon her. This young woman, introducing herself as Elle, was a Pokemon trainer from a different city who happened to be passing through Cherrygrove on her way to her next gym challenge. Elle had a Noctowl with her to help her navigate in the dark, and offered to lead Kal back to her home - an offer the young girl gratefully took. On their way back to Cherrygrove, Kal became fascinated with Elle's Noctowl as it led them home and fended off wild Pokemon. She was intrigued by the way it always seemed to know where to go, even in the pitch-black night, and she was captivated by the way it swiftly moved through the air to attack. Noticing this, Elle asked Kal if she wanted to become a Pokemon trainer when she got older, too. Kal, suddenly unsure of herself, didn't know how to reply. She just told Elle that her parents wanted her to become a breeder.
Elle's reply to this would change Kal's life: "I didn't ask what your parents wanted to be; I asked whether you wanted to become a trainer or not." Elle went on to explain that her parents utterly despised Pokemon in general at first, but she still managed to start her journey with their approval. Her logic was that if she could do it, so could Kal. Feeling empowered, Kal enthusiastically told her new friend that she wanted to become a Pokemon trainer just like her someday. Elle replied that she could definitely do so, if she worked hard enough.
Once Kal was home safe and sound, she and her parents graciously thanked Elle for bringing her home, and the older girl departed to continue her journey. Expecting to win their support after what Elle told her, Kal immediately announced to her family that she'd decided to become a Pokemon trainer one day. At first, they simply laughed at her, not realizing how serious she was. Kal was slightly discouraged by this, but continued to follow her dreams nonetheless.
Eventually, Kal won the reluctant support of her parents for what she wanted to do. Although they didn't completely support it, thinking that Pokemon breeding was much more sophisticated and that becoming a trainer just wasn't proper for a young lady, they saw how enthusiastic their youngest daughter was and decided to let her do what made her happy. On the other hand, her sisters never really stopped ridiculing her for being the "odd one out" in the family. And, as she continued to use much of her time for studying Pokemon battling techniques in preparation for her future journey, Kal became increasingly distant from her family. She even began to resent her sisters, thinking they were too meek because they accepted the role their parents placed upon them without questioning it.
When the day came when Kal was finally fully prepared to leave her home and begin her journey, the farewells did not take very long. Kal was beginning to feel restricted by her family and was glad for the freedom that her journey would allow her. Her parents were still apprehensive about letting her go in the first place, and her sisters no longer cared. Kal departed as soon as she could, eager to finally start the journey she had dreamed of since she was so young.
Goals: In addition to obtaining all the gym badges in Johto, Kal wants to one day become a renowned expert on the flying-type Pokemon that have fascinated her since she was a little girl. She wants to become an expert at training them, battling with them, caring for them, and overall knowing as much as there is to know about them.
Other Info: Kal has a bit of a celebrity crush on Falkner, and is especially excited about meeting him. He's Johto's current expert on flying-types, after all. She also really wants to own a Noctowl because the one Elle had influenced her life so profoundly.
