After taking his huge break playing with his Pokemon to hide from the bad winter in Violet City, he had done some assessment of his Pokemon as he was preparing to do something novel for the first time in his life.
Gym battle.
Not that he had thought about this before, but ever since he had met some trainers, like the one with Furret, he came to realize and understand that there are other Pokemon in other regions. Not to mention, having a badge or more represents the growth a trainer has with the Pokemon. Most importantly, he wanted to see how his Pokemon fare against someone with more training with the Pokemon. He had planned for this, and he will do this challenge.
Not to mention, he had been planning strategies. He knew that the gym leader in Violet City are expert in flying type Pokemon, which is a type advantage to most of his Pokemon. He didn't mind though. He wanted a challenge, a special one.
Unfortunately, however, Hurricane Ben had left Violet City cold and dark and wet and windy. He doesn't like cold weather, such as snow and hail, let alone a windy and wet rainy day. But as mentioned before, he planned for this. And today's the day that he found the mood to stop planning and continue. He wore his rain jacket, which is probably the only one he has with him on his adventure, and made his way to the Gym.
He walked in Violet City until he came into this building decorated with giant Pokeballs in a few places. He pulled the door open and entered. He quickly released one of his Pokemon from the Pokeball.
"Tox, Tooxx!" the moth Pokemon fluttered around, lightly flapping and surveying the building. I'm ready for this!
"Dustox, this will be a big battle soon, watch out!" Alex warned as he was patting himself to make his jacket appear less drenched in rain.
The wind outside was muffled by the building, but he care less if a thunder even cracked outside. He pushed another door to enter the gym battlefield, with his Dustox by his side, casually flying.
He hoped his plan will work.

It was all so boring.
The young Gym Leader gazed out of the domed glass ceilings. While the worse of the hurricane was further south, Violet City was still seeing the edges of the storm. It had been raining for days, and Falkner's mood reflected that. He hadn't been outside in what felt like ages, and his birds were getting antsy. And when they were antsy, he was antsy.
Arceus on high, he hated it here. A Gym was just like a cage: no matter how big it was on the inside, he couldn't leave. Oh, and he so sorely wanted to leave. People his age got to go out and explore the world, see the sights, test how high they could soar. Yet, Falkner found himself trapped in one tiny town, forced to enact the same pointless battle over and over again. It was always the same. Challengers came and went, nearly all of them leaving with a shiny new badge, never giving a backwards glance to the town or the man who they'd won said badge from. It irked him something fierce.
So now he sat inside his "cage", sitting up in the empty stands surrounding the field, staring out the window and wishing for once that something exciting would happen. He ignored the sound of the Gym door opening and closing; it would probably just be another challenger, and it would be the same as the rest. Why should he even bother?
He heard nothing other than the sound of footsteps on the hardwood floor of the Gym, which surprised him. Most challengers came storming in, shouting about how they would beat him, or screaming their goals for all the world to hear. Honestly, he sometimes wished he had a recorder to capture all of the embarrassing things his challengers said. He could send it along to the other Gym Leaders to warn them, or just for a laugh.
Turning his gaze from the roof, Falkner arched an eyebrow as he saw a teenage boy and... a Dustox? Was he seriously considering fighting with a Bug Pokemon? Shaking his head, the young Gym Leader figured that he should at least humor the lad. He got to his feet, trotting down the aisle between the stands as he called out, "Welcome, challenger! I'm honestly surprised that anyone would try to fight their way here through the storm." Pulling a Pokeball out, Falkner released his Pidgey to the battlefield, crossing his arms over his chest and directing an almost overconfident smirk at Alex. "But don't think that the tempest in here will be any better than the one out there!"
Gym Leader Falkner accepts your challenge! He sends out his Pidgey (level 10)! Choose a Pokemon for battle!

After Alex had opened the door to the Violet Gym's battlefield, he was greeted by the Gym Leader, who was probably not much older or younger than him. And he had to talk about the weather. Alex thought this was probably because of the hurricane, but seriously? Shouldn't gym leaders' greeting be a little more sophisticated? Or was he asking too much? He wouldn't know, he's not a gym battle enthusiast.
"No, the weather report just says it's raining and heavy wind," the trainer replied the Gym Leader's comment about the storm. "Some places were flooded, but I got around those. And plus, I have fought the sages in Bellsprout tower before. You should have seen their angry storm."
"Tox, Tox!" Tackzill flapped her wings closed to him, sounding elated. At least I'm dry! Then, as the opponent sent out his Pidgey, she carefully landed on Alex's head, fully knowing at least the first battle plan he had in mind. She will watch the battle for now.
"A tempest? The air is rather calm in here," he spoke, noting the Pidgey who just came out of a pokeball. Didn't he just fought something like this recently? That bugger almost pecked his face off.
"And at least there's no rain here, I don't like feeling cold..." he added as he reached for a pokeball.
"Saurobix, you know what to do, aim and Leech Seed!" Alex tossed out a pokeball, and out from the flash of light, a small, green dinosaur with a big green bulb appeared.
The Bulbasaur shouted his battle cries quite enthusiastically, as typical of him. But if you haven't been battling for a while and your first return battle is a rather important one, would you be overly excited too?
Standing on his all four, Saurobix looked at the Pidgey carefully, waiting for a good opportunity to fire his leech seed accurately.

Falkner smirked as Alex mentioned the weather report. “Oh, is that so? Well, I don’t know about rain but I’ve got a lot of heavy wind in store!” His eyes widened suddenly and he pressed his hand against his mouth, seemingly embarrassed by what he’d just said. “Uh…what I mean is…um…eh…that came out wrong!” This was just perfect. The battle hadn’t even begun and he’d already made an ass of himself.
“Well, let’s get…uh…started then,” he spoke, looking down at his feet. He seemed really unprofessional today but hopefully, he’d finish with this kid quickly. If the Dustox was any indication of what to go by, it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. The challenger suddenly tossed a Poké Ball into the air, revealing a Pokémon that Falkner was relieved to see. “Is this kid serious?” he muttered to himself, becoming somewhat calmer. His beloved bird Pokémon would be able to take a grass-type out in a flash.
“Pidgey, get ‘em with a Gust attack,” Falkner ordered while Saurobix eyed the avian. When the timing seemed right, the plant Pokémon shot a tan-coloured seed at Pidgey, wrapping him in thin vines. Although he felt restrained, the flying-type was still capable of moving and began to flap his wings frantically. Heavy gusts were directed at Alex’s Bulbasaur, causing him to slide backwards but in the end, he held up pretty well. Pidgey squawked suddenly as the vines began to glow red, sapping his health. Saurobix, on the other hand, seemed somewhat soothed. Battle

Saurobix ♂ | Level 13 | Health: 87% [33/38 HP] Status: Normal Saurobix attacked with a successful Leech Seed! Leech Seed restored 4 HP!

Alex raised one of his eyebrow as the gym leader tried to make a joke. That was terrible, and the joke was not a good one. Not to mention it makes the situation quite more awkward.
As the battle unfolds, he was thinking of easing up the mood, by not making a terrible joke, you know.
"I'm Alex Burke, by the way," he began. "As you can see, possibly, I like grass types and bug types Pokemon."
Saurobix grinned and shouted a joyful "Bulbasaur!" as his leech seed had hit accurately. Now, he was waiting for the next order.Take that!
"Gust is not quite big of a heavy wind. Though I can assure you that Saurobix is heavier," the grass and bug trainer commented. Mind you, he does have pokemon of other types.
"Saurobix, start with a Tackle!" Alex gave the next command. Saurobix began moving toward the light bird.

Falkner was quite surprised by this challenger. Even though he was using types with a disadvantage, he was still doing moderately well. He seemed to have a strategy, which was alarming and refreshing. Most people just came in here, guns ablazing as they forced their way through the battle with brute strength. He wasn't used to dealing with someone who'd thought things out in advance. And it unnerved him slightly.
Still, it was only a grass type. It would be easy, right? "Alex Burke, eh? It's... a pleasure," he responded almost mechanically, nodding curtly at the challenger. "I could tell. Using a grass type is certainly an... interesting choice, considering what kind of Gym this is." It was a thinly veiled insult, but it was still one nonetheless. Despite the last turn's outcome, Falkner was still looking down on Alex.
"No matter. Pidgey, use Gust again." The bird struggled against the vines still holding it, trying to break free. Before it could try to move, though, Saurobix was charging forward, keeping his grip on the bird with his vines even as he attacked. Leaping, the Bulbasaur slammed his head against the small bird's chest, knocking it backwards a bit.
The Pidgey didn't tumble far, and soon he regained his balance, flapping his wings and kicking up some more powerful gusts. Saurobix winced slightly, but held his ground, lowering his head slightly as he tried to keep the blunt of the attack away from his face. Once again, his vines began to glow red, seeping energy from the Pidgey and soothing the Bulbasaur's wounds. Falkner gritted his teeth, irritated at how a grass type was besting one of his father's prized Pokemon. This wasn't supposed to be happening.
Gym Battle!(VS Falkner) Falkner's Pidgey | level 10 | Health : 42% (13/31 HP)Status : SeededAttack : A successful Gust VS Alex's Saurobix | level 13 | Health : 74% (28/38 HP)Status : NormalAttack : A successful Tackle Saurobix sapped energy from Pidgey!

Despite his effort to start a conversation, Alex felt maybe this gym leader just wasn't interested. And maybe he should go straight to the battle and maybe the opponent would talk. Or maybe Alex spoke in a way that made this gym leader reluctant to talk. Whatever. He was here to get his badge and exploring other parts of this region anyways.
"Saurobix, use Tackle again!" the trainer ordered. He watched as his Bulbasaur prepares for yet another tackle.
"Bulbasaur!" the grass type Pokemon lifted a leg, telling his trainer that he got the command. Gotcha!
"Dustox!" the bug Pokemon that Alex entered this gym with, his weak-psychic Tackzill, cheered and then hummed briefly. Go Saurobix! Instead of resting on the trainer's head, this time she was actively watching on the side, flapping her powdery wings gently. She watched shyly as the battle unfolds.

Vs. Gym Leader Falkner- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
In a way, the lack of conversation was a welcome relief. Many of the gym's challengers liked to talk smack, belittle him or his birds, boast about their own Pokémon, or swoon over him. Though the silent air was charged with tension, not having to engage in idle chit-chat seemed to allow both parties to focus on the battle. Falkner watched Alex's Bulbasaur ready itself for another attack, wondering how the plump little Grass-type was doing so well in a Flying type gym.
Gritting his teeth, the leader decided to change his tactic before his Pidgey was beaten by something he was super-effective against. "Pidgey, use Tackle!" Falkner ordered, flicking some of his hair out of his eyes. The little bird chirped in response, rearing back in the air before throwing himself forwards and down, slamming into Saurobix's shoulder to knock the Bulbasaur back a few feet.
Saurobix let out a battle cry and bounded forwards, taking advantage of Pidgey's close proximity to return fire. Tucking his head slightly, Saurobix crashed into the small bird Pokémon, skidding to a stop as Pidgey went tumbling in the air. Pidgey chirped angrily, looking ready to kill when the vines wrapped around his body began to glow again, taking the last remnants of his health.
Gym Leader Battle
Falkner's Pidgey: | Level 10 | ♂Health: 0% (0/31 HP) Status: ...; --Fainted! Pidgey used a successful Tackle. Pidgey's health was sapped by Leech Seed!
Fight!
Alex's Saurobix: | Level 13 | ♂ Health: 60% (23/38 HP) Status: That'll teach ya for sneering at me!; Normal Saurobix used a successful Tackle. Saurobix regained some HP from Leech Seed!
Falkner's face was ashen with shock as he watched Pidgey fall unconscious to the ground, the vines that had finished him off crumbling into dust. "Well, you may have taken down Pidgey... but the real fight begins now!" the leader declared boldly, recalling his fainted partner. Offering a devious smirk, Falkner replaced this ball with another one, sending it flying with a flick of his wrist.
Out burst a much larger brown and tan bird with a distinctive reddish crest of feathers. It flared its broad wings and let out a trilling cry as it relished in being able to battle again. Pidgeotto looked very well cared for, with a lustrous hide and glossy feathers, and taloned feet ending in wickedly sharp points. This was definitely Falkner's ace up his sleeve, and Saurobix, who seemed to be rather nervous now, knew it.
Saurobix grew to Level 15 and gained +1 Happiness! He is now capable of learning Take Down. Delete an older move? Falkner has sent out his Pidgeotto (Level 15)! Will you switch out or keep battling?

OOC: take down replace tackle, self updated, thanks! EDIT: I haven't done the happiness quest so I will ignore that +1 part. Alex was thankful that the Pidgey was down. One more Pokemon to go and he would claim the badge. Now for this one, he knew the stakes were higher and the opponent would be more difficult. Pidgeotto certainly has more experience than Pidgey, and definitely much, much, faster. He wasn't concerned, though, but he surely hope his strategy would work.
"Wait, if Pidgey wasn't the real fight, then how are you structuring your gym challenges again? the grass type trainer was puzzled. He knew this gym specializes in flying type, but if the first Pokemon wasn't a challenge, then what the hell are you a gym leader for?
And why was he trying to talk to the gym leader again? He thought he decided not to have a conversation with him. Anyways, he should be continuing his battle plan anyways. One thing that made gym leaders harder, was perhaps that even if people studies the battle, there could still be surprises in the leader's sleeves.
"Saurobix, start with a Sleep Powder!" Alex ordered, and awaits the battle to hit the climax. He was kind of tensed and nervous for the outcome, but he would keep that in himself and not showing the mood physically, of course.
The Bulbasaur, on the other hand, already knew this phase of the battle would be coming. He looked at the Pidgeotto with his eyes. Despite being a smaller Pokemon, he knew he could get some drowsiness into the bird.

"I get tons of trainers in here. Why waste my best effort if I don't need to? Pidgey weeds out the weak, Pidgeotto takes care of the rest." Falkner flicked his hair to the side and smirked. "Just like he's about to do with your Bulbasaur." It may have been an awkward start, and a Grass type may have just beaten his first Flying type, but the battle was far from over, and he'd give it everything he got. Lately it hadn't been easy to get motivated, he had to acknowledge his recent attitude wasn't fair to the Pokemon trying so hard to fight for him. Though this challenger may just have the unusual edge to get Falkner excited again.
Pidgeotto noticed the renewed spark in his trainer's eyes and crowed with approval. Falkner nodded with a boyish grin. "Muuuuud-Slllllap!"
The massive bird swooped to comply, flapping his wings and kicking up clumps of dirt that pelted his foe. Bulbasaur coughed and stepped back, struggling to see and breathe. His back bulb scrunched and puffed out a pollen-like substance. The Sleep Powder drifted towards Falkner's Pokemon and enveloped him. Pidgeotto tried to blow it away but soon showed the effects of the attack. Eyes fluttering closed as it fell to the ground.
"No!" The gym leader looked frantic at the turn of events. Pidgeotto let out a soft coo, trying to reassure his trainer before he completely passed out. Falkner covered his own mouth so he wouldn't breath any of the particles in, hoping his Pokemon would wake up soon.

As Alex listened to the gym leader's explanation, he was beginning to understand the opponent's situation. With his curious mind though, another question had popped up.
"Hold on, doesn't your Pidgey get tired or something? I know it's stormy today and you might have less challengers, but don't you have other Pokemon to weed out challengers?" he questioned Falkner, wondering how in the world can a Pidgey have so much stamina to weed out said weak challengers.
As the battle continued, he opened his eyes wide, as if beginning to be concerned again. So the sleep powder did work, but the Pidgeotto had returned with a mud-slap before falling into slumber, that means his next move would be a bit of a risk.
"Saurobix, aim for a Leech Seed!" he ordered and had hoped that this risk is worth it.

Falkner sighed. This guy was too...inquisitive. But he obviously wasn't allowed to say that. Crossing his arms as Pidgeotto remained asleep, he stared across the field to his opponent. "There are healing machines. How else do you think Gym Leaders can take on so many challengers daily? The nurse at the Pokemon center nearby provides the service here." Falkner answered. He really wasn't sure why he had such an annoying time answering it, but maybe it was because of the sleep induced on his Pidgeotto. Saurobix took full advantage of it however. As Alex gave him his command, the Bulbasaur gathered a Leech Seed at the opening of his bulb and shot it out. It flew across the field and landed among the bird's feathers. A cackling sounded as Saurobix willed the seed out of its shell. vines of varying thickness wrapped around the other Pokemon's body, letting them wrap around the Pidgeotto. "Damn...I hoped that wouldn't hit." he looked back up at Alex as the seed took effect and sapped some of Pidgeotto's health. "It's a clever trick, but don't get to cocky. You're still using a grass type." Falkner warned quickly. Battle!

"Oh, your Pidgey would need to use those healing machines later then," he began talking again and watched as he had hoped his bulbasaur's leech seed would hit. Thankfully for him, the move hit accurately and Pidgeotto's health were beginning to be zapped.
"But grass type moves balances tricks and power, while flying types seems to use just raw power, huh?" he replied to the gym leader. "Your mud -slap is a clever trick too, but it's technically a ground type move."
"Dustox!" the bug Pokemon next to Alex uttered, seemed to agree with him despite not knowing much about grass type moves and Pokemon, as well as being a bug type itself. Or, perhaps she was just enjoying the battle so far. Mm-hmm!
"Alright Saurobix, Pidgeotto might wake up soon, spray it with a Sleep Powder again!" Alex ordered, having a feeling that his opponent's Pokemon would be awake from its slumber.

Falkner groaned and dragged his fingers vertically across his face, tugging his cheeks down to express his aggravation. Pidgeotto still wasn't waking up. He let go and sighed, fixing his hair and staring hard at the ground.
"Oh, your Pidgey would need to use those healing machines later then,"
"Yeah."
"But grass type moves balances tricks and power, while flying types seems to use just raw power, huh?...Your mud -slap is a clever trick too, but it's technically a ground type move."
"Yeah." Anything you say, man.
The gym leader massaged his temples. This battle was turning out to be harder than he'd thought it'd be. Falkner was pretty sure his Pidgeotto would wake up next turn though, and when it did he had to be ready to give the attack. He just couldn't lose to a Grass/Bug trainer. It was already hard enough being the least powerful Gym Leader, and he just knew that news about a loss like this would spread like wild fire.
It seemed the other guy's strategy was to use Sleep Powder and rely on Leech Seed to do the damage. Falkner had to admit, Alex had a lot more patience than he did. Birds were all about speed; slow is not something he was used to.
If this guy beats me, Bugsy's gonna rub it in my face. A pained look crossed the young man's visage, the thought strengthening his resolve to win.

Given how the blue haired gym leader was rubbing his temples, he thought maybe talking with the almighty gym leader was still a bad idea. He kept a straight face despite he wanted to laugh. But he can't yet because Falkner could reverse the battle at any point.
Instead, he thought maybe he should just continue with the battle and stop with the chitchat. "Saurobix, use Sleep Powder again!"
He knew that the Pidgeotto could be awake any minute, and he also knew that his Bulbasaur is currently at a disadvantage with the mud-slap earlier. He knew his risks, but he was taking his chances. Though if the situation calls for it, he would have to switch out his bold Saurobix.
Speaking of that grass type Pokemon, the Bulbasaur was smiling with his big mouth and big eyes. He seemed to be enjoying the battle, regardless of tactics.
