One big shift in Gen VII was the lack of HMs. It was a big change and the Poke-Rider was a nifty replacement. Calling in Pokémon to help you was a good way of freeing up the team.
Oddly enough, I sort of miss HMs in a way. It meant you had to micromanage having frequent HM uses about or purposefully limit yourself if you were going exploring and decided to bring a HM slave to cover some of the obstacles.
I laughed hard when I bumped into the HM makers at Poni Breaker Coast(iirc) who were on holiday from Kalos. Cool little reference.

I love this no HM shift it was annoying to lose a move slot, on pokemon you loved. But at the same time it's annoying to switch between pokemon and don't even get me started on the ugly riding outfit!!! But all in all I like it a lot.

I actually miss the HM, I have never seen it as a problem having the moves on my pokemon, I always had plenty of other strong moves they could use instead if necessary. But I have never thought much about moves or tactics
I also think I find it a bit less personal, I like the idea of riding my own pokemon, which I'm traveling with, instead of some random pokemon that just appears. But that's probably just me.
At least I can still learn my pokemon surf, which is one of my favorite moves.
