Name: Parris Spear
Age: Fifteen
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Trainer
Hometown: Vaniville Town, Kalos
Appearance:
With a height of only 5'0 and weighing in at around 7stone, it's probably clear that Parris won't be overshadowing much of the competition. His petite build, and soft features, only emphasise his young age and fragile appearance.
Blond hair frames his face in a short but messy style. It doesn't seem unclean in any way, but a bit more brushing could do wonders. Parris usually covers his hair in a hat, keeping many of the stray strands in place with fabric. It's not exactly rare to see Parris not wearing his hat, but he always has the accessory within his reach.
Hidden behind locks of blond hair, and the brim of a beloved hat, sits one lone yellow eye. Parris only has one eye, the remains of his left covered constantly with bandages or eye-patches. He was born with two eyes, and lived with the pair until an accident caused significant damage to his face and eye. The damage was so severe that it was much safer, and would cause less pain, that enucleation [removal of the eye] was the chosen route. Even when sleeping, Parris keeps the left side of his face covered, so chances of seeing what remains are practically impossible.
There are other areas that Parris constantly has bandaged up. His legs have significant scarring, and less noticeable scars appear down his arms. The reason for the bandages isn't to help the injuries heal anymore, but are more for the concealment of such imperfections. Not only does he not want others to see the scars, but he dislikes seeing them himself.
When it comes to clothing, Parris likes to stick to the vaguely formal styles. He wears what could easily be mistaken for a school uniform as his signature outfit, and rarely changes his mind. Occasionally he might wear just some casual clothes, shorts and t-shirts are pretty comfortable to lay around in when he's not out and about. As a colour scheme, he tends to stick to dark blues and whites.
Personality:
Parris seems like a pretty cheerful person, he's always smiling and it's rare for him to mention anything negative without reason. He's the kind of person who will try to ensure everyone around him is feeling tip-top, even if he isn't at 100% himself. If someone around him needs help, be it friend or stranger, he is willing to lend a hand in whatever way he can. But the minute someone questions if he needs a hand, he brushes it off with his trademark smile and tends to change the subject. It's clear Parris put others before himself, it's caused him trouble in the past, but it's not a mindset he will easily escape from.
You wouldn't be blamed if you thought everything was sunshine and rainbows for Parris, after all that's what he wants everyone to believe, but things aren't quite that simple. Yes Parris puts on a brave face almost all the time, and yes he will tell you that the only thing bothering him is that you're not feeling great, but internally Parris feels so lonely. His constant need to help others, stems from the fact that he really just wants someone to help him. He won't ask for it but he needs it. His thoughts about himself are quite low, and when reminded about his injuries they don't get any better. He blames himself for a lot of things, his scars being one of them.
So yes Parris is a cheerful person on the outside, but a lot of it is a mask to hide behind. A mask of optimism and helpfulness, hiding a side of himself that he refuses to show anyone.
There are two fears that could break Parris's cheerful act, one of which is quite a common phobia. Parris is terrified of ghosts, and even the mere concept of being near one may cause his act to drop. He refuses to do anything in the dark, for fear of encountering something he can't see. This does cover Ghost Pokemon too, and Parris has never been able to even let himself look at a ghost type.
The other fear is somewhat rarer, stemming from the injuries he received previously. Parris can't have anything near his face unless he puts it there, if someone went to touch his face or even if a small Pokemon wanted a closer look, he instinctively flinches back and may talk without thinking. It's almost like he thinks anything getting to close is going to try and injure his remaining eye, even if there's no physical way it could.
When it comes to Pokemon, Parris isn't fussy about types or appearances. As long as it's not a ghost type he's pretty relaxed about it all. He does have a tendency to like Flying types, his closest Pokemon from before being a tiny Fletchling he was unable to bring with him.
History:
Kalos is well known for it's fashion and Pokemon, and when two people from these areas met it wasn't quite love at first sight. Eventually they got to know each other, and despite the long distances they still managed to bump into each other on multiple occasions. These two humans were quite young when they finally settled down, still in their twenties and full of life. They chose a small house in Vaniville, and it was here that are story begins.
The birth of a child wasn't necessarily planned, but it wasn't an accident either. Both parents loved their young son, and the in fact soon to be named Parris had a bright start on life. Despite their busy early lives, both of his parents dropped it all to care for the being they brought into the world. Parris had it all, and never wanted for anything. New toys were purchased almost every few weeks, meaning he never got bored of the same things even as he entered his toddler years.
At the age of five, Parris received his first Pokemon. It wasn't a partner to go on a journey with, but a friend to have around the house. The little Fletchling was the closest friend Parris had, and they did everything together. A small plate of Pokemon food would always be sat next to Parris's dinner plate, and it was a common occurrence to see the two of the curled up on the same bed.
Even as Parris grew older, making a few friends with the small amount of children that lived in the town, he still preferred to spend his time with Fletchling. If the other children wanted to play, then his Fletchling was going to play too. It was so common that people just started to expect the two to be together.
This is how things stayed throughout Parris's childhood, and once he hit Eleven it was time for his parents to send him off on his own Pokemon journey. Although Fletchling went with Parris, the small bird never entered a fight and spent the whole time on Parris's shoulder. The journey went well, and Parris even got some badges to write home about. Things seemed to be going great, until the accident.
It wasn't really an accident to begin with, it was another trainer going too far and clearly not taking a liking to Parris's small collection of badges. Parris wasn't expecting it, he wasn't prepared after all. He had deposited his Pokemon into one of the healing stations around Kalos, not really needing the entire team of Nurse Joys to take them in person. His Trainer card in hand, and Fletchling lightly resting on the other, Parris was just waiting for the signature ping to tell him it was time to head of. That was until he felt a sharp pain down his leg. The colour red was the first thing he noticed, streaks down the visible portion of his leg. It was as he shakily stood up that he felt a hand grab him, and the rest is a blur.
It wasn't common for trainers to attack others in Kalos, it wasn't even something you could call rare as it practically never happened at all. But when Parris returned to consciousness, to find his vision significantly impaired and pain radiating through his body, his first thought was actually to the Pokemon he had left behind. He couldn't drag himself back to the healing station, even adrenaline had it's limits and the incline he had to overcome would have been difficile without injuries.
When Parris was finally rescued he was out cold again, and he didn't wake up again for many days. Without his trainer card no one knew who to contact, so he was alone when he did wake up. Deep pain radiated from everywhere in his body, his now useless eye being a large factor. The sight of doctors coming near him to even clean his wound made him flinch away, not helped by his sudden change in depth perception.
His parents were eventually contacted, with Parris conscious he could give information to fill the gaps. Of course they were panicked, they hadn't heard from their son in weeks and then finally learning he was severely injured, most parents would panic. They took it in turns to stay with Parris in the hospital, keeping him company until he was finally allowed to go home.
Of course things weren't the same, and Parris found himself with almost nothing to do. His parents did everything for him, even things he still had the ability to do. Any old friends he had in the Town were either gone or too scared to go near him, and the emptiness left by the loss of his best friend and first Pokemon hit harder than he could have ever imagined. He felt lonely and useless, whenever he even offered to help he was reminded of the fragile state he was still living in.
Around three years Parris lived like this, eventually getting frustrated with the constant denial that he wasn't still fragile. His injuries had scarred over, and even his now missing eye didn't need weekly check-ups. Yet nothing around him changed, his parents worked themselves to arguing on a daily basis and he was an outcast in his own home.
Parris could have just let it all spiral away in that moment, continued life as it slowly fell apart around him. But that wasn't like him, even after all that had happened to him. He waited until his parents were in the heat of 'debate', something about one of them wanting to leave one another journey and possibly never return. They were so loud they didn't hear his clumsy footing down the stairs and they didn't hear the door shut behind their only son.
If they checked for him later they would only find a note apologising for the hassle he had caused and letting them know he would be back when he no longer felt like a burden to them. And with that Parris left Vaniville town, leaving even Kalos altogether, and headed for a new region and hopefully a new life. Yes he had had bad experience with Pokemon journeys before, but he was determined to show he was capable.
Goals: To prove he can make it through this journey without constant support.
