The day was beautiful and the city was just a little too bustling for his tastes. After quite the string of training sessions in the last while he figured some actual down time would be refreshing, and the first place he thought of was the National Park. Little had he realized, until stepping into the lobby of course, that today marked the opening of the Autumn BCC. That explained why it had been so busy around here.

The lad considered dipping his hat and going right back outside to find another small park to just laze about in. There were a ton of people here so no doubt his leisurely stroll would be a little less leisurely than he liked. Both because of the other trainers running around but also the increased presence of bug pokémon shifting about thanks to Bugsy's contest. He half chuckled to himself and couldn't help but smile. Who was he kidding? Even if the place was swarming with trainers the little taste of home and potential for some interesting encounters was too much of a draw to ignore.

He signed up. Waited in the line to get to the counter and register Turret whilst handing over all his other pokémon for safe keeping until the contest was completed. Damien had almost missed the registration window, but the good news was that he didn't have to wait around long for all of them to be ushered outside and the starting bell to ring. The ranger scurried off to a less packed area much like his previous time partaking in the festivity, then released his turtle pokémon.

"Morning Turret," he greeted, watching as the wartortle made a big yawn and scratched his head. "Not exactly the early stroll I was planning, but what d'yah say about sleuthing out some bug pokémon for a contest?" Turret mulled the idea in his head for a moment before shrugging and giving a nod. A more excited grin swept across his face a second later as he pumped a fist and began searching for what could be around.

An agitated beedril tore into the sky with an angry buzz and threatening wave of its massive stingers. Damien yelped and hopped back, Turret doing about the same but managing to compose himself quickly and assume a defensive position. The wartortle called out to the beedril, taunting so as to get the bug pokémon's focus on himself and not Damien. The ranger took a deep breath to regain himself.

"What a way to wake up," he commented. More to himself than anyone else. The beedril zipped side to side, testing Turret's attention to it as it geared for an attack. "Right, Turret we don't want to turn our backs to something this angry. Give it a headbutt."

Turret nodded in agreement, bringing in his center and focusing in on the beedril as it shifted around. He'd need to wait until it was a little less mobile before charging forward for his attack.

Before the beedrill could act Turret had spotted an opportunity and took it. Moving quicker than the bug expected the barreling turtle covered the ground distance and was in the air by the time one stinger was raised. The two collided, Turret landing on top of Beedrill when they hit the ground causing just that little bit extra. Damien cheered for his partner, proud of the swift take down. It was just a bug type, but it was a fully evolved one. If he'd learned anything from Bugsy it was not to underestimate the bigger insects.

After such a hit the wild pokémon had had enough. Not even bothering to retaliate the bee scuttled off to the safety of the denser trees nearby. Turret shrugged and began doing a few stretches. "That's one out of the way. Let's see..." the ranger quieted into his thoughts, observing the paths and sea of yellowing greens laid out before them.

"Let's try over there." He gave a point to some thicket of bushes bordering the open area of the park. His turtle companion followed the invisible line and agreed, giving a shout before shifting through the grass toward the area in hopes of more bug pokémon.

A light gasp of disbelief escaped his lips as his eyes fell upon the shimmering grey shell shuffling through the grasses by the bushes as they approached. Luck was definitely on their side today. "This is it Turret, we have to capture this one." The wartortle croaked in reply accompanied by a nod. "Go head it off before it gets away from this section of the park."

Turret scurried ahead, making sure to make a bunch of noise as he pushed through the sea of green toward the shelmet. It drew the wild pokémon's attention enough to stop its escape. The waddling pokémon turned around to blink at the loud approaching turtle, unsure of what to expect but it had a hunch. Before it could quite ready itself Turret skid to a halt to block off the bushes and sent forth a squirt of water toward the bug pokémon.

Worked like a charm. Damien complimented his partner and dug into the small bag provided at the beginning of the contest. "Alright, that's probably enough Turret. Just keep it from escaping okay?" The wartortle nodded, eyes focused on the shelmet. Though, it didn't seem like the armored bug was making any attempt to run away just defend itself from the sudden attack. Sadly it's nice stroll through the park was at its end.

Expanding one of the designated balls Damien pulled his arm back and gave it a toss toward Shelmet.

"Yeah!" the boy cheered, quickly rushing over to scoop up the contest ball and pocket it for now. "Good work Turret, that's one great find buddy." Damien rubbed the soft round head of his turtle pokémon in appreciation. The water pokémon accepted the gesture happily before croaking its name and giving the ranger a determined look.

"You're right," he paused to stand back up and adjust his hat. "There's still more opportunity before this thing is over, so let's go!"

The caterpie wormed its way from the underbrush and onto the ranger's path. Turret squeaked and pointed. The only reason Damien even actually noticed the bug pokémon quietly making its way along. Now that it was spotted though it changed, immediately standing itself up and taking a defensive posture.

"Wow, look at the coloring on that one," the boy commented, smiling at the larva pokémon. It wasn't something that stood out as much as a shiny, but still notable for one who'd spent his youth growing up in the same town as the great bug encyclopedia. It was clear that this caterpie was very healthy and well toned. Odd that it hadn't evolved on its own by now. "No doubt you want a good fight ey?"

Turret set himself up between his trainer and the wild pokémon, butting his fists together and giving the caterpie an affirmative look. "Mmkay. Turret, headbutt!"

Just as he'd thought. The bug pokémon was more than willing to go at it with Turret and both started out strong. However, the small infant-stage pokémon just wouldn't be able to get through the wartortle's mighty defenses if tackle was all it could do. Even with any kind of speed advantage Damien could see Turret coming out on top with little challenge. He felt a little bad for Caterpie, but a challenge was a challenge. With how vivid that green skin was the ranger could tell battling was something it lived for so even in defeat the bug pokémon would probably find enjoyment.

At least that was his hope. It was always hard to tell what any pokémon was really thinking unless he knew the critter well. Being that this little guy hadn't evolved yet hinted that there was probably some sort of insecurity going on. Well, maybe a loss to an evolved pokémon would help it realize more of its own potential.
[break] "Keep it up Turret. Get in close for a Bite attack next." This would likely be the end of the fight, he knew, and likely after that last exchange Caterpie would know too. But it was still hanging in there with a determined stare.
