I was watching the Sci-Fi channel earlier and they had something on about aliens which got me thinking. Just how many people believe/disbelieve in the existence of aliens?
I, myself, am pretty much sitting on the fence. A strong part of me brushes it off as there being nothing else out there in the vast expanse but then I argue to myself surely there has to be SOMETHING. Space is infinitely vast, we can't just be the only speck of life out there.

I believe in aliens, I mean we can’t be the only intelligent beings in the whole universe.

I'm on the same boat. I am 100% confident that aliens do exist. I just look at it from this logical viewpoint... there are billions of galaxies out there, right? And each one of those galaxies have a countless amount of stars within each one of them. Trillions upon trillions, really. And we already know that many stars out there have planets of their own. Our own solar system has 8-9 planets (if you consider Pluto a planet). So just thinking of it like this... trillions multiplied by trillions of planets exist out there. What are the chances that in this crazy universe, Earth is the only planet ever to produce intelligent life? Your chances of juggling twelve running chainsaws with one hand are probably greater than that.
But on the other hand, do I believe aliens have come to visit Earth? Heck no. UFOs and such I think have a more logical background behind them. Yes, there are forgeries, but sometimes people can be mistaken. It could be something else. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong.
Regardless of the fact, I like to think that the aliens that exist out there are looking up at their starry night sky, maybe looking at out sun that is countless light years away from them, and they're asking the same question: Are we alone?
It'd be a fun kick in the pants to find out that these aliens were nothing more than humans just on a different planet.

ALIENS! Yeah, I basically agree with what Nada said. Even if you think we havent been visited by aliens before (Crop Circles, Roswell/Area 51, Abductions, etc.), you cant doubt that the universe is infinetly vast, and it's damned near impossible Earth is the only planet capable of sustaning lifeforms.

I suppose what we're all thinking is: "The odds stack up."
I am of the belief that stuff like crop circles and supposed UFO sightings are all a hoax. From the majority i've seen and can pass a judgement on, there seems to be too many loose ends untied. I ought to pick some specific examples too, eh? I'll have a look for some.
It would be a pretty funny kicker though if they were just other humans though, Nada. ;D

I have to believe that they exist, or else there will be no sentient species for me to morally-correctly murder. I'm kidding. Anyway, yeah. The universe is too large for there to be nothing. I want to imagine that there's nothing else like humans, just for the sake of diversity (and also because having a universe of Star Trek-esque aliens would be the most boring thing in the world). Even though I know, sadly, that I won't live long enough for such a thing to happen, I can't help but dream of a time when we might be able to connect with another species and establish colonized space stations and the like. Sci-fi has always captivated me, and I want to believe that it's an eventuality for our race (even if a lot of it is really far-fetched). But I don't believe in any alien interactions on Earth. Call me a skeptic.

I believe in life beyond our own. To call them aliens makes them seem evil. In Science recently we calculated the possibility of life on another planet based on our life. It's a really small percent, but it isn't zero, so that means something. :'3 I'm still kind of "on the fence" as Joey put it. Since I haven't seen or heard of any proof, I'm not sure if I believe it's there or not.

If there's anything I know about percentages... Even the smallest percent can make all the difference. It may be minuscule but... It's THERE. Your point about calling them 'aliens' making them sounds evil raises a good point, Julia. I mean... Think about it. What would the interaction between our species be like? If you look at our own past its been pretty blood and cruel. Wars have decimated thousands, prejudice rife amongst most walks of life. I just can't help but wonder if the human race would exploit aliens if we were to ever make contact. That or the aliens do the exploiting. I mean, if they can travel thousands of light years to where we are here I think they'd be more than equipped to push around like cattle or something.

I think that we would all being doing the exploiting. Human nature you know? It's just natural to want to succeed... maybe others think the same.
