Now that he'd spent the night and bought some more Pokeballs, Finnian felt like he was ready to set out into the wilderness once more. He'd had some interesting adventures on the way to Cherrygrove, not to mention within the city itself, so he could only imagine what he was going to run into on the way to the next city and the corresponding gym. Honestly, he wasn't sure about the whole idea of doing a gym battle, but he had to admit that it was something everyone seemed to be doing at his age, and it was generally accepted as the social norm. If he was going to be out in the world then he ought to do what was expected of him. Besides, plenty of his Pokemon seemed to enjoy battling, and he wouldn't keep them from what they liked doing.
He felt optimistic as he set out that morning, which wasn't anything new for him. It would be a strange day if he wasn't feeling cheerful, especially with his Pokemon at his side. As usual, Talia and Florus were walking along beside him, and instead of sitting on his shoulder, Cara was now able to fly with him. Only Vera and his Goldeen were within their Pokeballs, as the Goldeen couldn't really swim on land and Vera was rather new to the team and for now preferred to hang out in her own space. He was looking out for a flower patch for her and Florus, but for now they were carrying on along the path. It seemed the smartest thing to do.

Route 30, a connecting route between Cherrygrove City and Violet City was usually a hive of activity, trainers would often be battling against each other and even more trainers out battling and capturing wild pokemon. The weather that today had bought had deterred most trainers from travelling onward in their journey as the melting snow and fresh rain fall was flowing creating a flooding effect on the surroundings that sent wild Pokémon running for cover, some brave trainers were willing to forge ahead regardless of what the weather bought. Wade the Bug Catcher had been getting beaten up alot in battles lately, his Metapod and Kakuna weren't overly far off evolving but in their current forms they were consistently being beaten in battle. Wade wasn't fazed by the losses or the weather, he was simply focused on creating the strongest team of bug type pokemon possible, maybe one day he would have a team strong enough to challenge Bugsy, the gym leader of Azalea Town for the rights to be the Gym Leader, at the moment thought that was just a pipe-dream. Wade had been dawdling along the path of Route 30 keeping his eyes open for any wild bug pokemon when he happened to notice a beautiful looking butterfly pokemon ahead of him, the only issue for Wade was that the pokemon appeared to in the company of the trainer, despite this Wade was not deterred and started running to catch up to the trainer as he yelled, "Wait just right there mister, I challenge you to a battle!"Bug Catcher Wade has his sights set on Cara! Will Finnian accept his challenge?

Finnian was somewhat wondering if he was going to have to kayak through the route or have Talia pull him along, but for now he'd managed to get along all on his own. Obviously, Cara and Talia were having a much better time than the rest of them, and he didn't fault them for it.
It was a huge change of pace from having all the people around him in town and on the previous route, and while he did somewhat miss the human interaction he had to admit that it was sort of nice having a reprieve. At least, he had one until someone came running up to him with a massive net, demanding they battle. Cara looked at the net rather warily and moved behind Finnian as he turned to look at the boy.
"Oh, uh, okay!" Finnian replied, thinking briefly of how poorly his previous interaction with a trainer had gone. That weird guy had been such a jerk... but he held out hope that this boy wouldn't be the same.

“Good!” Spoke the bug catcher, excited for a chance to show off his fabulous bug Pokemon. Perhaps the trainer’s flying bug would be stronger, but he wasn’t scared of a challenge! Wade set his net down on the ground and fished his hand into an interestingly shaped bag he was carrying. He was somewhat clumsy and it certainly seemed to take him a moment to get what he needed from the unorganized bag, but eventually his hand would escape the endless pockets of the bag. Out popped a blue Pokeball with a net-like pattern on the top portion. He looked at the ball for a moment, before flinging it into action. “Go, Metapod!” called out the bug catcher as a long green Pokemon escaped the light of the ball. “My Metapod is tough, so you better watch out! Someday he’s going to be an amazingly strong butterfree, and we’re going to show the world how awesome the bug type can be!” His cocoon Pokemon stared towards Finnian and his Pokemon. Although it looked angry or sleepy from its eyes, with no other real facial features, it would be hard to read the expression of the Pokemon. Bug Catcher Wade sends out Metapod (Lv 7)! The battle begins! Which Pokemon does Finnian send out to face the boy? BIKE MODE: With the festivities going on, I wanted to send you a reminder that we do have bike mode available for new trainers who haven't beaten Falkner yet. It is currently off, but you can turn it on for faster replies(which could be useful for the Easter event)! With bike mode, however, mods may choose to make shorter replies in times of low activity.

The Pokeball the boy had seemed different, and that intrigued Finnian. He'd never seen different kinds of Pokeballs before. Admittedly, he hadn't seen much of anything before leaving home, but now here he was, out in the wide world and learning as much as he could. Hopefully, whenever he returned home he would be much more knowledgeable than when he had left. Maybe not though. If you'd asked his Pokemon they would have politely said that he seemed a bit daft.
"Go ahead Cara," he said to the Silcoon, who drifted forward obediently. She tensed slightly, bracing herself for the battle that was to come. She didn't know what to expect from the Metapod, but she knew it could only be so strong considering it hadn't evolved yet.
"They can be pretty awesome, can't they," Finnian agreed. He remembered when he'd met Cara, how energetic she had been. He'd thought her adorable then, and she was pretty now. That middle stage had been a bit weird though... and it was where he could guess the other boy's Pokemon was as well. Maybe that was just a thing with Bug-types?

If there was one thing Wade had learned raising his bug types it was that their ability to harden their outer shells was a very useful tactic especially if you lacked any decent offensive option. Metapod was the poster child for such a situation as Tackle was its only offensive move and using that did not seem to be the best option just yet. Wade was not quite quick enough to take advantage of his idea first as Cera started to harden her body to make physical attacks less effective. He had never seen a Beautifly use Harden before but he was quite pleased to see another trainer with a similar mindset. " Oh nice, Beautifly can use Harden as well? Metapod let's show them your harden as well." Wade said in excitement as both bugs increased the thickness of their outer shells. Although neither Pokemon used a damaging move this round even the thickest of shells could not protect either Pokemon from the raging sandstorm plaguing Cherrygrove as both Pokemon took damage from the storm. Though neither Pokemon was willing to give an inch a drawn out battle might not be good for either Pokemon in weather like this. The weather shifted quickly within the region, and as things began to dry out a wind kicked up and began to lift the dirt around them, buffeting both men and their Pokemon. Finnian winced, trying to cover his face, but it was hard to do. The sand seemed to be coming from every direction at once. He knew he had to keep an eye on Cara and the battle, but it was hard to force himself to do so.
"Yeah! Guess it stuck around from her time as a Cascoon!" he replied. Man, they really needed to do something, or else they were just going to be standing here staring at each other while they got peppered by sand, which didn't sound like a good time to him. Would an umbrella help in this situation? Or would it just get blown away? These were the things he wondered about, despite not having an umbrella to test his theory.
"Okay Cara, let's not wait around," he suggested. She hummed in agreement, never one to sit idly by while a fight was going on. She hastened to shoot a poisonous barb at the Metapod, neither sure she would aim accurately with the sand buffeting her, or that it would be able to pierce the other Pokemon's tough (now tougher) outer shell. No time like the present to find out!

“That’s neat!” The Bug Catcher pulled at the brim of his wide straw hat as he commented on Cara’s ability to remember how to harden. Normally, bug Pokemon used that within their cocoons to keep them safe and protected as they prepared for their fully developed evolutionary forms. The young bug catcher’s eyes fell upon his thick green cocoon for a second, and the hopeful joy that sparkled inside of his wide-eyed gaze seemed to intensify. “Ya here that, Metapod? Maybe you’ll remember how to keep being tough long after you emerge as a Butterfree!” He called out, waving his arms enthusiastically. Beautifly spun about in the air and shot out sharp pointed barbs that flung at Wade’s Metapod. The Metapod cried out loudly, as it rocked back and forth in its one spot on the ground. Wade bit his lower lip with the upper rows of his teeth and gripped his hat’s brim nervously. “Hang in there, Metapod! Use Harden again, we gotta make sure we’re super strong first!” He commented. “Metttaaa.” The green cocoon agreed, and hardened its outer shell. Wade’s Metapod glowed a bright greenish-white color, making its outer flesh as hard a steel once more as it buffed up its defenses. The Sandstorm whirled around the open route, slinging bits of sand and debris everywhere. Wade lowered his head as the sandstorm raged on and used the brim of his hat to try and afford himself a was to buffet the storm’s assault. Metapod wasn’t as lucky, and neither was Cara. The bits of debris dug at Metapod, most notably around the eyes and the softest parts of his thickened, toughened hide. The storm would also strike the fluttering Beautifly, pelting her with tiny grains of sand and miniscule sized pebbles, as it whirled. “Gee, I hope this storm calms down eventually!” Wade commented, obviously not enjoying the weather himself. It was clear to Finnian that the other boy knew more about his Pokemon than he himself did, and part of him wished he'd paid more attention when his mom talked about the Pokemon that ended up at her reserve. Maybe then he'd have a better idea of what was going on in battles and what to expect from Pokemon. But, alas, here he was with what limited knowledge he had. In a way, it kept him occupied more this way, as he didn't always know what was going on and therefore learned something new every battle, let alone every day.
He could see the reasoning behind strengthening oneself, but it seemed as though Cara wasn't interested in that. She never had been, he supposed. Battling was something she enjoyed, but mostly she liked being on the offensive. In this case, she hurled herself at the Metapod as fast as her wings could carry her.
"I hope so!" Finnian exclaimed. Not only could he not see well thanks to the storm, he couldn't imagine how Cara was managing to stay in the air during it. Heck, at this point he was fully expecting her to go flying off in the wrong direction while trying to charge her opponent. He wouldn't blame her for it in the slightest either.

Bug Catcher Wade watched as his Metapod took a beating between Cara and the extreme elements of the weather. He clenched his teeth and grinded them as he considered the odds of Metapod and hem winning the battle. They were plenty tough now, though. Even after spending two rounds toughening up its outer shell, Wade’s Metapod was still hanging on strong as Cara spent her first attack, and the two were almost evenly matched in terms of strength now. “Ok, Metapod! Give it a good Tackle. Let’s see if all that Hardening is really paying off like we planned!” Cara fluttered on the winds through the swirling debris of the sandstorm. The bright butterfly’s black wings with bright yellow, blue, and red hues carried the Beautifly through the air faster than the nearly stationary green cocoon could hop forward in preparation of its attack. Cara dived down on the winds and rammed into the Metapod, knocking it over. “Come on, Metapod. Hang in there, you’re doing good, buddy!” Wade called out worriedly, then let out a sigh of relief as Metapod popped back up. Metapod gave a couple of jumps as it hopped forward, and jumped up high enough to tackle into Cara, knocking her to the ground. The sandstorm’s sharp whirling winds would cut into both Pokemon as they battled. Finnian seemed to agree with Wade about hoping that the storm would ease up. “That Beautifly of yours is impressive! I sure wouldn’t mind findin’ me one for my team one day. How’d ya meet?” Wade asked Finnian, carrying on their side conversation along with the battle. There probably wasn't any bug Pokemon alive that Wade wouldn't mind having for himself. Poor Cara was hanging in there as best she could given the circumstances, which weren't great for her. At least her opponent could stay on the ground and didn't have to worry about being buffeted around by the winds and the harsh grains within them. Besides that, Finnian had a feeling that the Metapod's harder exterior would make it feel the storm less than Cara's relatively weaker frame. All they could do was hope the storm abated soon.
In the meantime, both Pokemon crashed into each other with similar abilities. It was a shame Cara didn't know anything more than what she did. He hoped she'd learn something new soon, because throwing herself at her opponent didn't seem like the best strategy. For now, she backed off a bit and tossed more poisonous barbs at the cocooned Pokemon. She didn't want to give herself a minor case of very serious brain damage after all.
"Oh, I was walking in the forest over on Route 29 and she popped out of a bush at me! Feisty little thing, so she fought one of my other Pokemon and I brought her along with me because she was adorable," Finnian replied with a broad smile. He loved all his Pokemon, it was true, but some were cuter than others. It wasn't anything against any of his Pokemon, because they were all his friends, but just a fact of nature.

"You can do it Metapod! Hang in there, I know you are tough!" Wade called but the worry was clear in his voice, this storm didn't make it any better and it might be the bane of them. "Try another Tackle, you are just as good as any evolved pokemon!" Wade added doing his best to encourage his pokemon and then had to turn to spit out sand from his mouth. He muttered something. "What? You met a wild beautifly on route 29?!" Wade exclaimed and stared open mouthed at Finnian, and once more had to turn to spit out sand. "That's incredible! I have heard there were wurmples around but not any evolved forms, where did you go in that route?" Wade asked eagerly. He had long planned on going and finding himself a wurmple to train and evolved but with both hus current pokemon being in their cocoon state it was a bit difficult and he had accepted to wait until one of them evolved and could help him a bit better. If there was wild fully evolved beautiflys around it was too good of a chance to let fly and he would have to try get one, it would be such a big help for him. Metapod buckled down and endured the poisonous needles Cara sent at him, then launched himself in a tackle that sent her out of balance and made her struggle even more against the sandstorm. Perhaps she needed a bit more flying training? Metapod needed training in general, he fell down like a stone after his launch and the buffering sand took what remained of his little energy. Wade didn't linger on his loss and quickly recalled him only to replace him with another cocoon, a yellow one this time. "You got this Kakuna, you both have options of hardening your shell and poisoning your foe. I believe in you!" Wade declared and his pokemon readied himself for battle. Finnian realized that he'd inadvertently misled the other boy and immediately felt bad. Oops, maybe he should have been clearer. "Oh, actually, she was just a Wurmple when I found her," he explained, embarrassed. "She evolved pretty fast though." He didn't know that was just a thing that Bug-types did, actually. He just assumed she had gotten strong very quickly, as none of his other Pokemon had evolved yet. Well, okay, Florus couldn't until Finnian found a stone for him, presuming he would even then because he wasn't like other Pikachu, Finnian knew. Beau was just a baby too, so Finnian didn't expect anything from him at the moment.
Cara stared down at the Metapod as it fell back to the ground and merely laid there, waiting for it to get up again. When it didn't, she concluded that she had once again won. Well of course she had! She was a mighty fighter after all! Safe to say, she'd had quite a bit of practice in the past few days. Truthfully, she was quite pleased with herself.
She was more than prepared to take on the next Pokemon that was sent out, but Finnian had other plans. Cara was clearly strong, but he had other Pokemon who needed to train, and he didn't want Cara to have to be out in the storm more than necessary. "You did great Cara, but let's give someone else a chance," he said, and she obediently, if not slightly irritably, returned to his side. She wanted to keep going, but she wasn't going to fight her own trainer over it. She wasn't that much of a ruffian.
This time, Finnian sent out Aislyn, who hadn't seen battle in a hot minute. It didn't occur to him that she wouldn't do as well against Bug-types, simply because he was inexperienced like that, and hopefully he wouldn't find out just how bad of a decision he'd made until after he couldn't fix it. Of course, he also didn't realize that the Kakuna's poison typing gave Aislyn an advantage, but in his defense who did regularly remember that?
The Drowzee definitely wasn't thrilled to be up against a Kakuna, but she was willing to make the best of it. She began to dance, waving her arms in the air in a mysterious pattern, aiming to confuse the poor little bug across from her. If nothing else, it certainly looked weird.
Aislyn was sent out and used Confusion!

Wade's excitement instantly dropped, and he laughed sheepishly that he had thought something so stupid, especially after Finnian had actually mentioned that Cara had been a silcoon. Of course there weren't any beautiflys in route 29, that was just silly, no they would be living far off long away from humans to be undisturbed and in peace. He didn't think twice about how the wurmple would have gotten there in the first place and that most routes were big, much bigger than the road leading through which the trainers traveled on, which gave plenty of room for wild pokemon to hide and live in peace. "They do evolve really quickly though, that is why I got these two. They will be a great start for my pokemon party of strong and awesome pokemon. Just you wait and see, soon I'll have a gym like Bugsy!" Wade said cheerfully, he dreamed big although he lacked a plan to reach it, but he was also just a kid. "What's that?" Wade asked and pointed at Aislyn revealing his inexperience. He knew about bug pokemon since he had some himself but probably not much else. It wouldn't be today that Finnian nor Wade would learn about psychic pokemon's weakness to bug, since even if Kakuna had had such move at this early state he was way too slow to keep up with Aislyn. "Alright Kakuna, use Harden and get a good look on this one!" Wade said and it had barely escaped his mouth before Kakuna flopped to the side knocked out by the confusion. Wade stared openmouthed as he tried to catch up and grasp what had happened. "What.. what was that?" He asked confused as he tentatively walked closer to his cocoon and check that he really was fainted. Wade then recalled it and would look to Finnian to explain. When he had been educated he would find a little wallet with a kids motive and pick out a few bills which he handed to Finnian. "Thanks for the battle, it was really cool seeing your beautifly and I can't wait for my own to evolve so I can go get one myself!" He said and then spun around and raced towards the Pokemon Center to get his cocoons healed. Aislyn was too fast for Kakuna to keep up, she grows +2 levels to [lvl 12]! It never ceased to amaze him just how varied Pokemon actually were. There were so many of them, with so many different forms, abilities, personalities... Just like people, he guessed. He didn't know how anyone could possibly learn about all of them when there were so many, but he guessed people just did their best. So, obviously he didn't blame the other man for not knowing what Aislyn was.
"Oh, she's a Drowzee," he explained. Honestly, if she wasn't one of his own Pokemon he might not have known the answer either. He also had a hard time explaining her moves considering he very rarely actually commanded any of his Pokemon to do something, and the majority of her attacks seemed to take the form of some kind of dance. Identifying which dance it was when asked was surprisingly difficult, but he still gave his best guess.
"I think she used Confusion. She likes to do that kind of dance for it." Honestly, he thought it was kinda cool how her moves worked and how she used them. He'd never seen another Pokemon do that before. If she wanted to have a dancing career then so be it!
"Yeah, good luck!" Finnian said as the other man moved on. It was time for them to see what other kind of Pokemon might be on this route. He wondered if there were any cute ones he could pick up before they made it to the city. Not that he was suffering from a lack of Pokemon of course. He just liked how so many of them looked he couldn't help himself.
