A Little Contest to Relax

She sighed, "What a gloomy day." Dull eyes watched the equally gray clouds meander over the city park. Their wispy bases threatening raindrops at any moment. The woman rolled her head forward to instead gaze at the lilligant she'd entered into the contest. The color plant pokemon brought a soft smile to life. "Well let's just hope it doesn't rain on us." She stood from the bench and brushed some of her long blond locks from the feather edged shoulder of her coat. "I just got this dry cleaned after all."

The start of the contest was close. Lenore watched the annoying cluster of youthful trainers grow around one of the park attendants for a minute before finally joining the group's edge. Soon the speakers blared to life to countdown the start and afterward the ruckus broke into a flurry of excited trainers trampling through the grasses. She noted a few took immediately to the edges of the park, somewhere she too momentarily considered. But the sort of bug that avoids the limelight probably wasn't one she'd care to end up with at the end of this.

With another short sigh the blond took a deep breath then stepped further into the center of the park eying all the others' encounters she could.

A wild Kricketune walked out from a thicket of tall grass. The large bug cried loudly, singing a wonderfully beautiful song. Perhaps it was Beethoven's 3rd Symphony that it was trying to imitate? It would sound eerily familiar to Beethoven's work if anyone sat and listened closely enough. As soon as the Kricketune spotted Lenore and her Lilligant, it would stop crying and cross its arms over it chest as though it were prepared for a battle. What would Lenore and her Sera do?

It was impossible to miss. At least, as long as you weren't one of the little hoodlums screaming throughout their battles. The brazen vocals pouring over the nearby area grabbed quite a few people's attention. Some but for half a second. Lenore found herself intrigued, though upon gazing at the source of such a tune found her desire hesitating.
"That thing is what's singing?" She couldn't help the words spouting from her mouth. No one would hear her except Sera. Of who quietly chuckled.

Her lack of immediate action almost cost her. Motion from the side caught her attention. A bug catcher from the looks of it, and they were pointing at the red cricket. Even just the hint of his approach toward the kricketune cinched her decision that it would be her prize.
"Sera, throw some sleep powder on that kids metapod quick."

The lilligant wasted no time in wading forward through the grass, drumming up all kinds of natural spores into a faint sparkling aura around her. The bug catcher was too enthralled in their target, still singing happily away, to notice her yet and with the metapod being not the fastest mover it was a breeze to cascade the sleepy powder over the bug type trailing behind its trainer. Next time the young bug catcher turned around to see the progress of his metapod he was met with a silent sea of grass.

Lenore smirked as observed the other trainer panic momentarily. They called for their pokemon, and when nothing answered they went to searching through the tall grass to find the slumbering cocoon.
"Perfectly done." Sera did a little twirling curtsy in reply.

The two waited a second to ensure the catcher was well and busy before making a hasty approach to the wild bug. She smiled when it broke into a battle position.
"We got ourselves a little maestro here Sera. Don't want to damage that lovely voice so... How 'bout another set of powder hmmm?"

While Sera's first wave of powder has worked perfectly, the second did not as well as the kricketune now had a warning of their tactic and how it worked. When Sera turned towards it and let the powders drizzle down over it, it had stopped singing a long time ago. It didn't move an inch, just smirked as the powders rolled down its hard exoskeleton, and it just stood there as if it waited on something.

That wasn't the greatest sign.

Lenore felt an uneasy chill crawl down her spine as she stared into the ebony orbs sticking forward out the sides of the mustachioed bug. It's violin-esq body unnervingly still.
"What's it doing..?" she half muttered, her tone demanding an answer but no one around to provide such. The dancer squinted suspiciously, as if the slight skew in vision would help reveal whatever tricks were up those mantis sleeves. Sera fumed lightly, more than disappointed that her sweep of powders proved completely ineffective.

The woman's hands moved to cross and cup each elbow. Her head turned slightly to glance each side around her. Everyone else was busy with their own thing. She bit her lip for half a second.
"Sera hun, I've changed my mind."

That was all that needed to be said. The keen grass type, eager to remain a favorite of her trainer, gave a motion as if brushing long locks of hair from her shoulder before moving into a side facing stance. One arm raised, the lilligant looked as if she was ready to begin some sort of dance routine. There was a leading moment of flourish. The petals of the vibrant flower seated on Sera's head flashed to life before splitting off in swirling wind around her shapely body, of which went into a little jig.

The Kricketune was eerily silent as it watched and waited, and bid its time. The leaves began to spin around Sera elegantly before she waved an arm as if directing them and they whirled at the kricketune. The pretty flower leaves moved like a gust of wind now and swept the bug with them and into a treetop where it disappeared out of sight.
The silence only lasted a few moments though as rustling revealed something fighting to not fall down from up there and a moment later a venonat dumped down on the ground from the exact same tree. It looked rather annoyed.

The woman applauded gently, "Nice dispatch." Smile beaming down on the plant pokemon, Sera twirled around and finished with a cheerful curtsy.

But the rustling didn't stop. A flicker of annoyance ebbed on the dancer's delicate features as her gaze returned to the treetop, but this was quickly relaxed as they fixated on the fluffy purple of a familiar form. She almost gasped. Lips parting just barely as the world slowed down. Vision nearly tunneling into the distant bug type like binoculars.

"A venonat..!" Her tone was in rising glee. A tingle came to her fingers as she clasped them together. "No time to waste hun! Before any brat comes around again." Lenore didn't even finish speaking before she was hurriedly stepping closer to their newest target; to the mild annoyance of the basking lilligant.

They didn't have to move far. She stopped once close enough and abruptly twisted to her following pokemon.
"Don't rough it up," she spoke sternly, raising a finger.

Although Sera would fan her sleepy spores out through the air, a strong gust of wind would blow across the battlefield and carry them off in the wrong direction. Venonat stood there for a second, confusion, then angered when it realized what Sera was trying to do. It's large compound eyes began to glow as it shot out a powerful Confusion attack at Sera.

Sera glared over at the increasingly irate bug, as if the wind picking up was its fault. It was a bit unsightly for such a floral pokemon, but Lenore was safely out of view to make any comment on the matter. The lilligant shook her head like someone trying to get hair out of their face. She stood straighter, shoulders back, producing a more imposing figure versus the nearly equally sized venonat after it had attempted to sway her mind.

"Oooh, some bad luck. Try again Sera." The dancer was on the edge of her toes waiting in the back. Already a sport ball was in hand, gripped in both hands in eager anticipation of the time to throw. The grass type hmphed quietly before taking a short breath. She spread her arms wide. The flower on her head shimmering as they worked up the necessary pollen for yet another sleep powder.

The spores drifted through the air and the venonat looked expectantly to the sky from where the last gust of wind had come from, this time there was no help and the spores spread out in a wide area and made it impossible for the venonat to avoid them.
It wasn't going to stop it and the wave of confusion was magnificent, all golden and shiny and everyone looked at it in wonder, or so it thought as it dreamed peacefully in its sleep.
A pidgey flew past and its flight became rather unsteady as it too got affected by the spores and almost dropped out of the sky!

"Yes!" the woman cheered, muting herself quickly after her joy spurted out. It wouldn't do to awaken the slumbering bug now that it was finally asleep. Sera nodded happily at her eventual success, spinning around rapidly so her bodily leafage could flare out with the motion. "Well done hun, now..." Lenore paused to pose herself and take aim with the sports ball in-hand. "We'll see about adding this lovely to the team."

Rising excitement had to be kept in check or she'd miss. The thought of having her dearest friend back brought a feeling she had felt in a long time. Though, she tried to tell herself that it probably wouldn't be the same. They weren't the same venonat after all.

Sera eyed Lenore suspiciously before turning back to watch the result of the capture attempt.

The Sport Ball flew steadily and the stirring venonat couldn't do anything as it disappeared into the ball and stayed there after a few testing wiggles.
A gust whirled past again and it carried along an elegant butterfree, or was it the butterfree who had sent the gust ahead of it? Whatever carried what the butterfly was here now.
