For days, Sara had been traveling. She had heard of this place before, but had never been before. The prestige of this institution had reached even the Alola region, Sara had even remembered the rejection letter she had gotten in the mail for an international exchange program due to the fact that her “academic standing was insufficient to participate”, or something like that, Sara recalled word for word. Sara gulped at the beautiful arches at the front of the building. This place oozed wealth, which was a world Sara was familiar with, though in the past when she had to play the part of someone wealthy, she often felt she didn’t belong.

Sara had passed by many students, some teachers, and even a few police officers, all of whom gave her a once over as she made her way to the entrance of the prestigious education center. Trainers were no stranger to this place, but they must have rarely seen trainers quite as filthy as Sara. A group of students passed by Sara, giving her long stares as they entered the facility. Sara felt her blood rushing to her cheeks as she looked down at herself. Sure she was a little battle worn, but what trainers weren’t? She headed inside the building, and quickly found herself overwhelmed by the sheer size of it.

Sara walked over to the reception desk. “Uh, alola… I was hoping someone could help me with some research?” She said, sheepishly. The receptionist put down the papers she was looking over, and looked up to Sara, pulling her glasses down to the tip of her nose and glaring with her head tilted down. “Research? Yeah, head that way dear. I’m sure the lead librarian in the Studious Chambers can help you find whatever you’re looking for.” They said, dismissively. Sara opened her mouth to reply, but the receptionist was already back looking at the paper she had put down, and was dialing a number on the phone. “Alola then..” Sara said quietly, shrinking away from the reception area.

Sara turned, trying to figure out which of the many doors the receptionist had been pointing towards. Busy looking people were walking in and out of the welcome center, the expansive room branching out into several hallways which had all manner of classrooms and research areas. A few students walked by, each carrying a small stack of books, and Sara thought they looked smart, so she followed closely after them. Down one hallway they went, then a turn and a short walk later, they opened the door to another room. Sara entered the room after them.

Books lined the walls, and large beautiful scientific models of pokémon were poised dramatically throughout the room. Many people in the room were seated around several large tables, and the group that Sara had followed after had also taken seats quite quickly. A few eyes peered up at Sara, and Sara felt quite out of place. Only one other person in the room was standing, and they were staring at Sara expectantly, as if waiting for her to take a seat or leave. The person was dressed quite nicely, and looked to be an instructor of some kind, based on their outdated fashion, and an aura of self righteousness. Sara blushed, feeling other eyes staring at her, and rather than say a word, she quickly found a seat of her own.

In a matter of seconds, the instructor began passing out papers to each person who sat in a chair. Sara glanced around nervously, her nightmares of going back to school being realized in this moment. Sweating, she turned to her neighbor. “Hey, do you have a pencil I could borrow?”

Wealth helped build the foundations of the Mizuma Education Center. Prestige would slowly follow, brick by brick and mold by mold, as students slowly filled the halls and interns would seek to stake their claim on the infamous research facilities that the Education Center hosted. In truth, the founder’s goal was simply to bring back a piece of their parents – a memoir for the scientists that had left this world, and their daughter’s life, way too soon. Now, students lined the halls and carried their way through the long, winding corridors of the enormous building.

The yards were immaculate, though many had commented to the founders that they seemed to be made for a specific set of taste. Large looming pines trees, thick oaks trees, and sprouting spruces shot up everywhere across the rolling hills that nestled the prestigious estate. If it weren’t for the careful gardening and markd paths that led out to each area around the outside perimeters of the estates, it would appear as though the area was simply overgrown with the weed-like trees and shrubs. In truth, the areas left to the wilderness – such as the Penumbra Hills – were exactly that. They were left open and largely untamed, save for the rare bits of gardening done only to fit specific “fire regulation” codes that were often brought up in the numerous board meetings. Oh, how fun!

Mrs. Solis pushed her thick-rimmed glasses up the bridge of her nose as she passed out the exam papers. When students came wondering into the classroom, she stared at them with a strong and silent look that screamed Find. Your. Seat! Most got the hint. Though, for the stubborn ones that loomed around the front on their feet, she would simply tap her heels into the linoleum floors twice and cough with an audible, “Ahem. AHEM!” And they would magically find a seat at one of the tables. Then, Mrs. Solis would sway her long, southern-bell curls as she shrugged her head, and carry on passing out the quiz to each student. “Today’s quiz is graded as medium in skill. If you don’t pass, there is no need to worry. We are offering free admission into our Pokétution Summer Camp that starts in late June! Be sure to tell your parents that you want to sign up!”

Mrs. Solis would pause at Sara’s desk and eye her over as though she were sizing up the student. Her smile faltered for a split second, until she managed to regain her composure. “And I’m sure you’re all hoping to win the top prize for a perfect score – an Iron Ball! Who knows what an Iron Ball does?” One kid’s hand shot up in the air and waved around frantically. “Yes, Jermaine, I’m sure you know. You’ve excelled at the top of every class this year.” She giggled and nodded for him expectantly. A young kid with thick, curly jet black hair and a rich tone reminiscent of the harvest moon spoke up, causing most of the class to turn in his direction (with a few eye rolls included). “Iron balls are held items that you can give to your Pokemon. It will lower their speed and ground the Pokemon, making them susceptible to ground-type moves.” Mrs. Solis placed Sara’s quiz in front of her, then shuffled the rest of the stack of paper underneath her arms so that she could applaud enthusiastically. “Very good!”

After everyone had their quiz papers assigned, she would stroll back to the front of the class. “Remember, the questions are randomized for each student. Even though you shouldn’t be able to cheat given this fact, it is automatic disqualification if you’re caught doing so. Please be sure to clearly mark your choice by each number. And in our classroom, there are no winners or losers. There’s only an opportunity to grow as a student. And….begin!” She announced, glancing at her watch and studying the students every couple of minutes.

Mrs. Solis watched over the class carefully. She didn’t seem to miss a beat as the students began to scribble their answers down and worked quickly to complete the assignment. The curly-haired teacher pressed her hands on the thick, wooden desk and pushed herself up with a heavy sigh. She immediately strolled past Sara’s desk, shaking her head heavily in disappointment as she walked over to the table of student just behind Sara’s group. Mrs. Solis strolled up to a young redhead whose long, straight hair swept the floor from her seat and placed her hands on top of the table with an audible thud.

“Miss Hannond, you’ve just failed the test!” She hissed and immediately grabbed the girl’s quiz. She pulled a pin out of the pocket of her dress pants and scribbled a large “0%” on the top of the page. As she pocketed the pen back in her pocket, she turned away from the student, who immediately began to stomp her heels into the linoleum tiles of the classroom and pout with her arms crossed firmly over her chest. “That’s not fair! My mother paid good money for me to-!!” Mrs. Solis raised one hand high in the air and snapped her fingers. Without turning around to face the student, she spoke coldly, “Donations are not briberies for good grades, Miss Hannond. You should have thought of that before you tried cheating off Mister Chestfield’s quiz!” Mrs. Solis would sit back firmly in her seat and await for everyone else to finish their quiz.

Once the class had enough time to finish their quiz, she would push herself back up and begin walking around to collect their assignments. She smiled as she approached Sara’s desk and paused. Mrs. Solis stretched one hand out to eagerly accept Sara’s quiz with a gentle smile. “You know, miss. We love seeing new faces. If you want to enroll officially, our next semester starts in the Spring. The front desk should be more than happy to help you with our enrollment paperwork.” Mrs. Solis would then return back to gathering everyone’s quiz, stroll to her desk, and grade them all before passing them back out to her students.

Sara nervously handed her sheet in to Mrs. Solis. As Mrs. Solis confirmed that indeed, Sara wasn’t supposed to be there, Sara felt flush with embarrassment. “I…. will have to go check that out.” Sara replied. There was an awkward silence as the teacher rapidly graded each test. Sara looked to her left and right, the students on either side of her looked just as nervous as Sara felt. Well, at least she wasn’t alone in this.

Mrs. Solis handed back the quizzes as quickly as she had collected them. Sara felt almost relieved to see a familiar score on the top of her page, 65%. She let out a sigh, and peeked over at her neighbors quizzes. Yikes. Sara wasn’t even supposed to be here, were the quizzes always this hard? As the class ended, most people got up and left. Sara stood up and nervously looked around. There were books everywhere on all kinds of subjects. Sara paroozed the shelves, but couldn’t really find what she was looking for. She had been hoping someone had written a book about the edibility of pokemon, flavors found in the wild, anything like that. Mostly what she was seeing were non-fiction books about ballet. Not exactly the right subject.

After about thirty minutes of aimlessly looking around, Sara considered the idea that Mrs. Solis had suggested. She knew where the front desk was, so maybe there would actually be a class that taught some of the skills that Sara needed to progress as a tea maker. Sara made her way out of the Studious Chambers and into the winding halls, eventually making her way back to the front desk. The receptionist looked at Sara, and without putting down their phone, handed her the class register. “Ah, thanks!” Sara said.

She found a seat and started reading the short descriptions of all the classes. “Huh, field training and resource gathering at the Penumbra Hills. Sounds like an interesting class. I’ve been traveling for a while but it wouldn’t hurt to have some actual field skills, like starting a fire and maybe basic first aid..” Sara thought to herself. She checked the box next to the class. “I’ll have to go check this one out!"
