Bug out (BCC)

It was that time again, Lei had done wonderfully at the last competition and her tactic had worked flawlessly. Obviously.
Lei was at time and with a pokemon fit for catching the bugs at high health, since that was what gave you most point. Obviously it was a challenge for most other trainers to think like that, and they brought things to burn down the garden. Lei would have done that too, if it had been the way to win this, but it wasn't and she was able to think out of the box.
She studied the other participants and saw the usual crowd of young and eager bug catchers who would be thrilled to catch even a caterpie. There were a few Bug Maniacs too who looked to have really prepared for this and Lei assumed they would be her biggest competition. The rest was a mixed bunch of other kind of trainers, most who looked like they had brought fire types with them, she wondered why those were in favor and why there wasn't more who had brought birds, those could at least scout ahead and quickly spot potential targets.
The most impressive pokemon in sight was a Charmeleon which also earned a lot of awed attention, it looked strong and Lei guessed it wouldn't be long before it would evolve again. She was surprised to see a salandit as well and wondered if the owner knew about the gender difference, it was not well known outside of Alola after all.
There was not just one, but two magbys present as well, Lei was pretty sure that would be a challenge for their trainers unless they of course only had a goal of catching weak worms. The frizzy haired woman smirked and wondered what others thought of her pokemon who certainly didn't look like much either, but Morfeus was trained for a job like this.

The bell rung and as the last time Lei hung back to see where the others went and where they would chase the wild pokmeon with their noisiness. The kids spread out runningly and Lei wished she could have started on the opposite side of the garden as they surely chased the pokemon far away from there. All the bug maniacs went in bee lines to already decided tactical places, the rest of the trainers looked to not really have an overall plan other than see what luck would bring them. Fools.
Since the wild pokemon had been spread in all directions, Lei decided to follow one of the bug maniacs and see what secrets he had.

The man walked without any hurry, he clearly had been here before and Lei wondered if it was in an earlier contest or if he lived nearby and came here often. When he pushed beside some branches to disappear in among some trees, Lei decided it must be the latter when she did the same. A well hidden path got revealed and several bugs looked on without any fear as the maniac went to greet some of them before he continued further down. Lei waited until he was out of sight before she looked around to see what this place had to offer her.

Many of the bugs didn't realize what sort of trouble they were in, though lucky for them many were just little caterpillars that wouldn't be likely to win anything. They were a bit puny and definitely nothing appeared special about them. One bug did stand out amongst the common pokemon, though to Lei it probably wasn't anything special either for many reasons. Still, this one soda cream colored bug waddled up in her way and seemed to be insistently saying hello.

"A grubbin," Lei said dryly, "really? I could have gotten tons of those at home if I wanted," she added quietly and glanced towards where the bug maniac had disappeared. She looked around but saw mostly pink worms crawling along the branches.
"Yawn it, and follow it up with a Stockpile," she ordered to her ever sleeping pokemon, who had rolled along with her and had flattened the grass behind him. Morfeus didn't get upright but stayed in the side in his current position and yawned deeply as a greeting to the approaching cream colored bug.
Lei watched the grubbin sullenly, just her luck. Anyone else around here would probably love to get something like that, but she could easily get one free of charge as they were all over the place. She would need to be prepared for a good long explanation if she did though, as no-one she knew would understand why she wanted them to send her a pokemon like that. A vikavolt perhaps, but not a grubbin.

It was a rather boring spectacle to watch as the forever slumbering bear was chomped at a couple times by the bug after Morfeus so rudely did not return its greeting.

To Lei it was a really boring too, this was too predictable. The pokemon they encountered thought it had a chance and attacked Morfeus who put them to sleep and then she threw the ball and caught it. If it at least had been a rare or, to her, and interesting one it would have been more fun, then she could be gleeful about how she outsmarted them which wasn't really an option when she wasn't interested in the pokemon.
She waited until she was sure the grubbin was sleeping peacefully, then she flicked a Sport Ball at it and waited for the result while looking around at the bugs gathered around her. She smirked, another advantage of yawn and a pokemon always seemingly sleeping, it made wild pokemon less wary and easier to catch.
Now where had the bug maniac went? He had gone straight through this area, so there had to be something more interesting up ahead.

But of course. Who could expect anything less from the expert trainer? The device popped open to consume the slumbering bug and secured its capture instantaneously.

It went as expected, Lei let Morfeus stay outside as he was usually good at keeping up with her, and she stepped over to pick up the sport ball. She looked up at the pokemon in the trees, most of them were clever enough to get what was going on and only their heads peeked out from behind branches from where they watched nervously. A few were sitting in plain sight and staring and would have been easy targets if Lei had been interested in them. It was not today, that they would learn that was a mistake as Lei continued past them all to see where the bug maniac had disappeared to.
She pushed the branches of a bush aside to glance behind it, she saw the man further ahead turning at a large boulder and disappearing out of sight. Lei stepped out to follow him when she heard something to her right.

Lei's eyes widened when she saw the pretty beautifly, that had to be something special! And it flapped out to her presenting itself readily, that was a chance too good to let go. She had to hurry though as the maniac was still somewhere ahead of her and clearly had some plan in mind, she narrowed her eyes thoughtfully and looked at the butterfly suspiciously. Did he have something better since he left this alone? Or had had it just went past him without him noticing?
"Stockpile," she ordered, that would buy her some time to find the truth and she pointed the pokedex towards the beautfily. She frowned and pouted annoyed.
"Really? Just from a wurmple? But they are all over the place. Aaaand its not even hard to get either, 'a great starter for a young trainer', pfht!" She read aloud and glared at the beautifly as if it had tried to trick her somehow.
"Spit up!" She snapped at Morfeus, they had to get this one out of the way so she could see the real price.

Lei didn't stay around to watch what the results would be of the battle, she felt so confident in her ability to train and lay tactic that she didn't doubt the outcome. To her luck, Morfeus was getting so trained that he could win in his sleep, literally. And Stockpile/Spit up was a pretty strong combo against most opponents, especially what they could meet here so he rarely would have any trouble. It also helped quite a bit that
Morfeus rolled after Lei when he had knocked the butterfly into the nearest bush although it would take some time for him to catch up, now she hurried on to find what the maniac was hiding in here. She turned around the boulder and a big pine with low hanging branches and a pile of berries was sitting. Something was stirring in the grass nearby and Lei took a step back to not scare it off, should it be a wild pokemon. She looked around as she tried to spot where the maniac was hiding, since it had to be him who had put out the food.

(ooc: technically Morfeus can't get paralyzed, but it didn't do any difference here)

Something rustled in a nearby bush. However, as soon as Leilani should go to investigate it, she would immediately be confronted with the very common sight of a nearly immobile yellow cocoon. The cocoon rolled its large eyes around until it caught sight of the trainer and her tumbling koala and seemed to shake in its spot as it growled in warning. Perhaps, it was letting her know that it wasn't afraid to face her head-on in a heated battle? It surely seemed...tough...to someone, maybe.

Lei's head snapped around when the bush beside her rustled and she carefully pushed some leaves aside to see what it was, perhaps it was the bug maniac or the thing he was trying to lure out?
A yellow cocoon fell down dangling in a string and she gasped loudly and jumped back from it, only to gasp and jump back again when she turned and the had the bug maniac right up her face.

"What are you doing here?!" he hissed at her and Lei glared at him and straightened her back to look down at him.
"What do you think? Have you missed there is a contest going on?" Lei's voice dripped with sarcasm and the maniac sneered silently.
"You have followed me, you wouldn't have found this place if you hadn't!" He accused and Lei smirked as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"And what if I had? There is no rule against it, besides," she said and glanced behind him at the pile of berries, "it's not me who's in trouble if the officials learns about this, I'm not sure they will think highly of your way of finding pokemon."
The man flinched and Lei's smirk widened into a grin, "so what are you up to here?"
The maniac looked away and mumbled something she couldn't hear, "say what?" Lei asked and he glared at her, "it doesn't matter, you have chased it away a long time ago with your blabbering!" He snapped and Lei's eye twitched as it wasn't the first time someone accused her of that.
The grass rustled again.

A Pokemon that should be all too familiar for Leilani would come crawling out of the thick grass. Maybe it was the perfume she was wearing, or her own natural scent from sweating under the summer sun? Whatever it was, the Scatterbug seemed immediately taken to Leilani and began running as fast as it could towards the trainer. Though, the happy-go-lucky smile on its face seemed to indicate that it didn’t want to hurt the trainer. Hmm…

The Maniac heard the rustling as well and held out a hand to Lei to hold her back, she raised her eyebrows and glared at him but he didn't notice as he stared at what was getting lured in by the berries. Both she and the maniac made a sound by air when they saw what it was. A scatterbug. Lei exhaled and the maniac gasped.
"Well.." Lei began loudly and the maniac slapped a hand over her mouth which she pulled off furiously.
"Shhh!" He said, "don't touch me!" she hissed.
"That scatterbug is mine! Get lost!" He whispered loudly and waved his hand behind him, which soon was revealed was a sign to his pokemon to move, a beautifly dived down and covered the black bug in strings. The maniac smile and relaxed his shoulders.
"A scatterbug?" Lei said in disbelief, "all this for a scatterbug?"
"It's the ultimate butterfly pokemon, you'll be surprised how many forms it can have! there are nothing more pretty than its wing patterns," the maniac declared smugly but his face fell when she answered. "Twenty. You'll never win with that one," she said darkly.
"Win? Who'd want to win this silly thing? Winning is for losers. No, I'm here to get the most valuable bug for my collection!" The bug maniac answered proudly and Lei just stared at him for a few heartbeats before she spun around and stomped back the way she had come. He was truly a bug maniac.
