The National Park was huge! Trixie stared in wonder at the vast expanses of tall grass, her Magby by her side. She was also sizing up the competition. A few Bug Catchers, but also an assortment of sharp-looking trainers who had Pokemon seemingly far stronger than her own. This was going to be an uphill challenge, but Trixie never shied away from a challenge.
The official came by to hand her an allotment of Park Balls - they didn't look too different from regular Pokeballs, aside from a slightly more orangeish color. It was a shame she wasn't allowed to use her usual assortment. She supposed that was just part of the difficulty involved. Or maybe it was to level the playing field, so that rich trainers couldn't just buy their way to victory? Yeah, she supposed that was more likely to be it. Not that Trixie wasn't rich, mind you, but she hadn't exactly been able to draw upon her family's vast stores of money in continuing her journey. What a year it had been.
The official gave the signal to start, and Trixie immediately headed off with Cinnabar into the biggest, thickest stand of grass she could see. Let the little boys and girls catch their Caterpies and Weedles - she was going after a big prize!

"Ack!" Trixie scrambled backward away from the white-scaled insect she had nearly tripped over. That was the danger of choosing the tall grass to search! "Cinnabar, let's get that... whatever it is!" She dramatically whipped out her Pokedex, which identified the bug as a Nincada. Not a Caterpie or Weedle, at least, but not the strongest thing either. Still, it would be a good start to her bug-catching adventure. In the meantime, the wild Pokemon had been talking to Cinnabar. Trixie couldn't make out what exactly it was saying, but it seemed annoyed. After a while it bent back down over the ground and continued digging for the buried roots.
"Cinnabar, use Ember!" would interrupt its concentration. The bug Pokemon quickly leapt back, only to find that the little fireball had scorched the ground where it was standing - and probably its breakfast with it! "Caaaaa!" it hissed, gesturing angrily with its antennae and pincers, and flapping its wings in place. These interlopers would pay!
"Looks like we made it mad. Ember again!" Trixie commanded her Pokemon as the Nincada charged forward. A small ball of flame would again be spat out of the Magby's mouth, and shoot forward toward its target.

Cinnabar's flames would leave a scorching impact on the small bug as it cowered into a tight ball on the ground and rolled around. It managed to get most of the flames out and survived being seriously burned by Cinnabar's powerful puffs of flaming flying fireballs. The small bug then rushed after the other Pokemon and swung its claws wildly, until it managed to rake them into Cinnabar fire-based body. The flames from the fire salamander would scorch their way up the Nincada's arms, however, and leave a lasting impact that try as it might, the bug simply couldn't stop, drop, and roll out. 1-100·1-100

A direct hit! The bug let out a squeaking noise as it dropped and rolled around in the dirt, furiously attempting to put out the flames. It would get unlucky again, though, as when its claws made an impact with Cinnabar's body, the residual heat emanating from the Magby caused it to receive a powerful burn. The tips of its claws aching bright red, it scuttled backward in fear, unsure of what to do next. It could no longer even raise its aching forelimbs to adopt a threatening posture. Cinnabar, for his part, looked a little worse for wear, but his facial expression made it seem like he barely even felt the impact. It appeared the Nincada's attempt to fight back had hurt the bug worse than its opponent.
"Good work, Cinnabar. Now it's time to catch it!" Trixie said as she tossed a Sport Ball at the flailing Pokemon. The ball curved through the air in a graceful arc, lightly bopping the Nincada before sucking it inside. Bouncing up and down on her feet, Trixie got ready to throw another one in case the first one missed. She crossed her fingers as the ball wobbled furiously back and forth.

"Yeah! We caught it!" Trixie exclaimed, and bent down low to high-five the Magby. She scooped up the Pokeball and admired it in her hands. Her very first Bug-Catching Contest, and she'd already managed to snag a Pokemon! ...albeit it was not a very strong one. Could she do better? Or should she just turn in her catch now and be satisfied? "How are you feeling, Cinnabar?" she asked, and the baby fire Pokemon replied by pumping his fists, indicating that he was ready for more.
"All right! Let's do it!" Trixie steered the pair away from the stand of burned grass and set off for a distant corner of the park. With the destruction that had happened, any nearby Bug-types were probably warned to stay far away. She searched for an area that didn't look like too many trainers had been there recently, judging by the condition of the grass. Finally she settled on a spot that was tall - but not too tall, she didn't want another accident like before! - and relatively untrodden. Skipping merrily through the park, her Magby scrambling to keep up with her stride, she would look for another Pokemon to continue the hunt. What might she run into this time?
(Please don't be a Beedrill, she thought.)

It wasn't too long before a Caterpie scrunched its way through the grass up to Trixie and Cinnabar. The Magby looked up at his trainer, unsure of what to do. It didn't seem overtly hostile...maybe they should just leave it alone?
Trixie was none too thrilled with the appearance of the common Kantonian Pokemon before her. "C'mon, Cinnabar. Let's find something else." They were about to depart when the wild Pokemon wiggled its antennae in greeting before saying something in Pokespeech: it hadn't seen a trainer yet, but it was curious what fighting a trained Pokemon would be like. Would they like a friendly duel? Cinnabar tried to relay this information to Trixie, but the girl's lack of understanding of Pokespeech meant it would probably be a hard sell.
"What do you mean, Cinnabar?" The Magby pointed to the Caterpie, and pantomimed boxing with his fists. "You want... to knock it out? All right then, let's battle!" Well it was close enough to get the message across. Knowing the same move as before would probably work, Trixie called for an Ember attack. The baby Pokemon breathed a flame outward with a whoosh, sending it spiraling through the air, aimed directly at the Caterpie's face.

The Caterpie stood tall, though it was shaking. Something about this Magby seemed intimidating and made it worry. As soon as Cinnabar fired the flaming embers after the bug, Caterpie jumped nearly ten feet in the air. As soon as its feet landed on the ground, it spun around and tried to dart off through the thick undergrowth. But it was too late, and Cinnabar's embers nearly knocked it out. Barely clinging on, the bug Pokemon knew that it had to at least give it it's all, if it wanted to create enough time to escape, and Tackled Cinnabar.

It seemed the bug knew it was done for, and it tried to do as much damage as possible to Cinnabar on the way out. Unfortunately for it, the Magby shrugged off the Tackle easily, his bulging red head flaring up with the heat contained within his body. Trixie looked around nervously... that was an awful lot of burnt grass. As the Caterpie got up from exhausting itself during the full-body charge, it took a look backward and attempted to squirm off, though the state of the grass now would make that quite difficult.
"All right, Cinnabar, let's knock it out," Trixie said, and the Magby sent a little swoosh of flame gusting out of his mouth, toward the retreating bug's tail this time. She was eager to get a move on with the contest. Thus far she had caught an... interesting bug, but it was rather weak, and probably not enough to put a dent in the more serious contestants' scores. Even now she could see people heading back toward the judging table with their prizes in hand. Did they have a strong Pokemon, or had they simply exhausted all their Sport Balls? She would have to get a move on, and soon.

The worm quickly changed its mind again when more flames was shot in its direction and it spun around and disappeared into the undergrowth.  Cinnabar grew +2 levels to [Lv 15]! And also gains +1 Happiness (+2)

She would run into one of the rarest bugs in the competitions, one which a lot of trainers participated in this event with the sole hope of running into this one. The scyther seemed to know it as it soared over from the tree it had been sitting in, and it landed in front of Trixie and beckoned her and Cinnabar with a claw, wanting to see what they could do. The next bug that landed in front of her was one that Trixie recognized right away. A Scyther? Weren't those supposed to be super rare? Instead of shying away from humans, the green mantis Pokemon seemed that it was requesting a duel from her instead. She extended a fist back toward its outstretched claw. "All right, Scyther! I accept your challenge!"
She let Cinnabar toddle forward as the Scyther beat its wings, lifting it into the air until it was hovering a few inches above the ground. Then without warning it dashed forward. The Magby barely managed to escape in time as its claw slammed into the grass, shearing it off at the roots. "Try to keep your distance, Cinnabar!" Trixie called out. The fierce bug Pokemon was already turning around to lock onto its target. "Use Ember!" Perhaps she ought to mix it up with some different moves, but it had worked well so far; why not again here?
Building up strength and fire inside of his body, Cinnabar would then spit out a small fireball at his opponent. As the two Pokemon clashed, Trixie crossed her fingers. Surely a find like this would win her the contest? All she had to do was successfully catch it...

The Scyther, as Trixie expected, was faster than Cinnabar, and swiped him clean across the chest with one swing of its blade. The Magby stumbled back but managed to let off his fiery attack in the process, and to Trixie's surprise, she could see black marks traveling up the Scyther's arms - the same thing that had happened to the Nincada from earlier, it seemed, the bug Pokemon had been burned. "Scyyy!" it hissed in agitation as the burn marks made it harder to swing its blade-arms, significantly hindering its ability to fight.
But Cinnabar wasn't in great shape either. "Hang on, I've got you!" Trixie was pulling a Potion out of her pack, and spraying it over the Magby's wounds. The small cuts and bruises seemed to close up in no time, and while Cinnabar wasn't completely healthy, he was feeling a lot better than before, as he indicated with a delighted cry. There was no time to rest, however, as the Scyther had recovered and was on the attack again. The little fire baby crossed his arms, trying to brace himself for the worst as he was left unable to retaliate by the mantis Pokemon's attack.
"You're really strong, Scyther," Trixie said. "But you're not stronger than me."
Retrieving a Sport Ball from her bag, she wound up and threw. The Scyther tried to lift its arms and bat the ball away, but it missed and was sucked inside. Whether it would stay in, Trixie would have to find out...
