Name: Melanie Langley
Age: 16
Gender: ♀
Trainer Type: Standard Trainer (I plan for her to become a coordinator later on.)
Hometown: Cerulean City
Appearance: Melanie stands at five feet and two inches tall with a slight build and decently toned legs. Her narrow figure is evenly proportioned. She has fairly pale beige skin dotted with brunette freckles that burns rather easily in the sun and is difficult to produce a tan from. Her frizzy, dirty blond hair falls in small curls with varying degrees of tightness to her shoulders; it’s often pulled back into a precise ponytail. Slim, rectangular, black-framed glasses adorn her angular face, noticeably chiseled and lacking any of her characteristic softness. Her eyes are a brown so dark it’s hard to tell where her iris ends and her pupil begins. They are wide and upturned slightly, giving a curious impression. Her usual clothing style is comfortably athletic, distinguishable by distinct, differing colors and patterns that she finds interesting. You wouldn’t catch her dead wearing any kind of pants but jeans, but never skinny jeans. Those she abhors. Meanwhile, she loves lace—any kind she can find up for grabs, she’ll wear. Her favorite shirt is a white spaghetti-strapped tank with a delicate lace pattern at the top.
Personality: Melanie is indecisive about her future and takes each new step with great trepidation, preferring to consider things from every angle before she settles on a resolution. Therefore, she is highly sensitive to criticism; in her mind, she has already scoured all the possibilities. She is capable of solving problems once she’s been given the berth to assess a situation, but her frequent knee-jerk reactions—influenced by fear—slow down her completion of even the simplest tasks, much less pivotal decisions of fate. She goes out of her way to avoid circumstances that scare her. Those, unfortunately, are mostly anything that is new—and yet she always finds herself gravitating towards adventure, justifying the perceived danger to herself with ridiculously advanced mental gymnastics. The choices she makes and the hijinks that ensue are fundamentally driven by a desire to succeed, to satisfy the entity that she is both reliant on and subconsciously wants to break free from: her parents.
Melanie’s most vital strength is her steady moral compass, while her fatal flaw is her ignorance. While she may not understand what a given person or Pokémon is going through, she can recognize basic emotion and is quick to dispel sorrow however she can manage. She takes charge to help others for the simple reason that she wants them to be happy, like she was raised to do—sharing is caring, all that jazz. In her softness, though, she is wickedly easy to take advantage of. She’ll bend over backwards for those who really don’t deserve her help, and damage herself in the process. Despite her proclivity for compassion, she is goal-oriented. After she takes her time, gets distracted, and gets back on track, she always gets where she’s going.
History: Melanie is your typical sheltered teenage girl, raised by unhealthily strict “helicopter parents” who saw it as their sworn duty to protect her from anything and everything that the world had to offer. As a result of the bubble they created around her, she is extremely inexperienced when it comes to everything that goes on outside of a homestead. She’s great with kids, but will break down if, God forbid, she has to call to reschedule a doctor’s appointment. Throughout her life, however, she got her little tastes of the outside. She talked to those experiencing hardships and those with parental freedom, and was especially interested in hearing the stories of battle-weary trainers whenever she had a free moment. Above all, she had her radio and the television set. Through these mediums, she developed a craving for exploration—a deadly curiosity that was shut down each time she tried to persuade her parents of it. Eventually, she snapped. Because she was getting older and had worn them down, she had much more leverage against her mother and father, and in a fit of raw emotion convinced them to let her become a Pokémon trainer. Now, leaving the out-of-the-way metropolis of Cerulean City to start her journey off the beaten path in Pallet, she hasn’t a clue where to begin.
When Melanie was nine, her little sister Florence was born with a myriad of complications. This impacted her entire family severely, especially her older sister. Melanie was determined to love Florence unconditionally, but that was difficult, as Florence struggled with behavioral problems and a learning disability that brought the young girl’s ongoing stressors at home to school with her. Melanie still bears the scar on her cheekbone from when Florence struck her with one of the sharp edges of a block. Despite their troubles, with time, effort, and therapy, they both emerged with a better understanding of the world and their demons. In the thick of it all, they were given a Pokémon to share and play with—a Growlithe. That sparked Melanie in particular’s love for Pokémon, and the companionship helped her to communicate with Florence. The entire experience was one that to this day impacts the way Melanie interacts with people and Pokémon, and changed how she approaches difficult topics.
Goals: The reason that Melanie set out on her journey in the first place was to make her mother and father proud. In the same vein, she hopes to be a shining example for her little sister, whom her parents deem unruly but she believes to have oceans of untapped potential. A more suppressed motivation of hers is her wanderlust and a reckless streak she’s been nursing for sixteen sheltered years. When asked why she couldn’t just impress her family by studying to become a doctor or a lawyer, she pretends not to know the answer, but inside her heart rings true: she longs for the life she’s only ever seen on television. Summing all this up, her ultimate goal is to map out the entire combined landmass of Kanto and Johto, and to mark the Pokémon within the diverse landscapes.
Other Info: Initially, Melanie won’t have much of an interest in Pokémon, seeing them as more of an annoying tagalong on her quest than a true companion, but I predict that in time they will appeal to her sensitivity. Well, that and hopefully lessen her fear of them.
