The Spinda didn't like this, not one bit. If they weren't gonna give it any food, why not just let it be so it could go about foraging on its own. Why did so many humans insist on fighting and capturing their kind all the time instead of just leaving them alone? At least this plant seemed sympathetic to its plight, but there was only so much a Pokemon could do when its Trainer insisted on fighting all the time.

"But I don't wanna be caught...I wanna go home and eat!" the Spinda pleaded, looking around frantically as it tried to figure out what it was going to do. Then it got an idea. Copying the bird's pecking had worked surprisingly well, so maybe it could copy what this plant did to try and get ahead! But what had it done, exactly? It kinda just sat there and took in sunlight. It was then that the Spinda got a genius little idea! It was a plant; it ate sunlight and dirt stuff to get big and strong. Maybe the same would work on Spinda.

Spinda laid down on the ground, basking in the sunlight and shoveling a handful of dirt into its mouth in the hopes of absorbing some of the nutrients in the same way that Greeny had. It was a rather bizarre, almost unsettling sight in a lot of ways, seeing the emotionally battered panda lying down and eating literal dirt to try and get ahead. Nonetheless, Greeny lashed out with his vines, slapping at the panda's body. But the hits didn't seem to bother Spinda as it continued to do as the plants do. Weirdest of all, it seemed as if the panda's muscles were starting to flex and harden slightly, as if something in its body was beginning to change after all.

reeny's jaw dropped. Shinju's eyes widened. "Cool...!" Greeny gasped, now craving some dirt for himself.

"Disgusting," Shinju whispered, shutting her eyes tight and wishing that this battle would just end immediately.

But that wasn't the way of the Pokémon battle. You either saw it through, win or lose, or you ran away like a coward, and Shinju Fukutomi was too prideful to even consider doing the latter. Though, with the Spinda's increasingly worrying behavior (was eating dirt really necessary?), she was now beginning to weigh the pros and cons.

She clenched her fist. Don't think like that, Shinju, lest you return home a failure. Or worse—poor! She could already imagine Mother's disappointed sigh, Father's pitiful stare, and her little brothers' stink eyes and immature taunts. But you know what, she was doing far better than what any of them had expected of her!

She hadn't payed anyone to catch her Pokémon, nor did she take advantage of some teenage boy's infatuation with her and make him carry her luggage. She had three Pokémon already, all obtained fairly, and she had been carrying her luggage all the way from New Bark Town to Route 29. That was enough, wasn't it? While her phone call with Mother just a few hours earlier was not the most... becoming, one had to admit that Shinju was already experiencing quite the character growth.

Speaking of growth—

"That! Was! Awesome!" Greeny exclaimed. Despite some of his injuries getting to him a little bit, he bounded over to the Spinda and began observing its body from various angles with enthusiastic fervor. "I didn't know other types could photosynthesize! That's so bonkers! Did eating dirt make you feel even stronger? Do you think eating dirt could boost my power even more?"

"Greeny, use Vine Whip again!"

"Oh, yeah!" As his vines began to rise again, Greeny pawed at the ground and began licking up some loose dirt clumps. Well, he didn't feel anything different about his body after doing so, but it sure tasted good! Maybe the Spinda couldn't wait anymore and decided to take advantage of the Earth's most available food source. Greeny definitely understood.

The Spinda's expression turned to disgust after Greeny asked. While it sounded great in its head to copy other Pokemon like thsoe ones with wings, this one was actually a bad idea. "That was actually terrible! The ground taste rough, grainy, and mushy! I'll rather be nauseous from eating too many Oran Berries than this!" It made a disgusted face, as if trying to vomit the dirt it consumed earlier. The Spinda had to be doing something wrong. It was clearly the eating dirt. It tried again and lain on the floor, stretching its limbs out like the Bulbasaur. It felt relaxed as it did a Staryu pose subconsciously.

Upon hearing his next move, Greeny remembered again that there's a battle going on and not a catch up session with the Spinda. He extended his vines to check on the Spinda, accidentally slapping it too hard. "Ouch! That hurts!" It cried in pain, and in its last breath, it rolled on the ground once and stayed motionless as it passed out, in a much better position with its back on the ground. If Shinju would like to capture this mud-pie taster, this would be a great chance before it would wake up from its unconsciousness and flee into the wilderness.

oth Pokémon and trainer held their breaths as they waited for the Spinda to stir.

“It fainted,” Shinju murmured. “So that means…”

“We won!” Greeny cheered. Immediately, the jolly Bulbasaur began running around his trainer in celebratory circles. “We won, we won, we won!”

Shinju puffed out her chest, not wanting to admit that she was a little endeared by the grass Pokémon’s behavior. “Oh, stop this silly behavior at once, Greeny,” she chastised him, though anyone could tell from her tone of voice that her ego was growing by the second. “Of course we won. I am Shinju Fukutomi, and a Fukutomi does not lose. Well, except for Great-Uncle Yoshito, I suppose. Goodness, he lost a lot of stock that day…”

Two battles in one day! Shinju could not have expected that the first day of her journey would be so eventful. After gingerly inspecting her suitcase and the contents within—some dresses wrinkled, some creams jostled, but otherwise nothing major—Shinju dusted off her skirt, returned Greeny to his Poké Ball, and set her sights resolutely on the path that led to Cherrygrove City. No more distractions. No more ornery birds. And most certainly, no more pandas trying to steal her things.

She turned to give the Spinda one last glance before a smug grin graced her features. “Ta-ta,” she waved to the panda Pokémon before leaving it coldly in the dust.

(Ah, it was good to be a Fukutomi.)

After the Spinda battle, the rest of Route 29 was uneventful. Though she saw some trainers poking around in the tall grass, Shinju ducked or averted her eyes in order to avoid engaging in another battle. She had had enough of battling from the last few hours, and her main goal now was to reach Cherrygrove City and rest.

Bzzt!

Shinju stopped in her tracks and pulled out her Rotom Phone. If she was getting a notification, it usually meant something important. A few taps and swipes later, Shinju’s eyes scanned the screen and read a text message from none other than her father:

Shinju, have you arrived in Cherrygrove City yet? I had a gift sent to you in celebration of your Pokémon journey. The courier should be waiting at the Cherrygrove Pokémart. Please report back to me as soon as you have received it.

Just as she finished reading the message, the outline of Cherrygrove City appeared into view. It was nothing compared to Goldenrod’s bright lights and tall towers, but it was certainly bigger than New Bark Town and better suited to Shinju’s metropolitan tastes.

Well, into the city of fragrant flowers. Apparently, she had a package to pick up.
