Adrian stood in front of the large research building in this tiny, backwater place called New Bark Town. After coming from Saffron City, all the greenery and cozy residential houses looked utterly provincial. But the air was clean and fresh, clear of any big city smog. There were flowers blooming and pokemon chittering in the distance. Above him the sky was clear and sunny, not even a cloud obscuring the bright, blue morning.
He adjusted the backpack slung over his shoulder and drew in a deep breath.
What a beautiful start to the rest of his life.
Hopefully that spelled good things for the future.
Hesitantly, he went inside the lab where all new trainers start their journeys (or so he was told on his commute to Johto). There were lab assistants bustling about and the professor running the whole place was named Elm. The man was a bit scattered but friendly and offered him the option of one three...Kanto pokemon...to start his journey? Well, he wasn't about to make a rude remake to the man offering a free pokemon, so after some consideration, he took bulbasaur as his starter. Of the three he met, she was was the friendliest in temperament, and had stayed close to him, happy to lean against his leg while the others played.
"Wanna be my bud, huh?" he mumbled to himself. "Sure. We can be pals..." That was the whole point of choosing your first pokemon right? Starting a journey with a best friend? Well. This one looked like it actually wanted to be his friend.
When asked if he wanted to nickname his new bulbasaur, he paused, drawing a blank. One couldn't call him the most creative person in the world...
"Um...Buddy. I'll call him, Buddy."
"That bulbasaur is actually female!" Prof. Elm pointed out helpfully.
"...I'll call...her...Buddy."
And with that awkward exchange out of the way, Adrian set out on his new adventure, Buddy walking beside him.

Nature was bursting to life under the warm rays of Spring’s hot suns. The occasional showers that rolled through the skies at odd intervals provided plenty of room for growth. The branches stretched far and wide from the rough bark of their tree trunks. Long strands of bright green limbs shot out like beacons from the tops of thick bushes and reached towards the heavens above. Small pink winged birds darted through them, pulling bits moss and small twigs from various places to build their nests. Shaggy purple mice zipped through the tall grasses and darted into dug out tunnels in the ground, where small squeaks of their young echoed from somewhere further down. Several small brown birds stood in the midst of a small clearing where large oaks encircled the area as Adrian traveled with his newfound companions. They hopped about and pecked at the ground while scratching the earth with their sharp talons. Small grubs popped up from small holes in the ground and blinked startled at the waking world around them. Some would quickly duck back into the earthen ground underfoot, while others would be plucked up by the wild birds that dug hungrily for their next meal in eager earnest. When they noticed the human approaching, all but one of the wild birds would squawk in alarm, stretch their wings, and soar off in a hurry to disappear into the skies above. The remaining bird hopped around a thick bush while chirping cheerfully to itself. Large pink heart shaped berries burst from their long branches. The Pidgey would eagerly pluck them off one after the other and gobble them down its throat, filling its stomach to the brim with the bright pink Pecha Berries. It was so oblivious to the sounds of the other birds flying away, that it wouldn’t notice until it was the only remaining bird in the entire area. When it finally noticed Adrian, though, it hopped down to the ground and puffed up its feathers in fear. “Please leave me alone!” The wild bird chirps loudly, kicking up sand to spray in Adrian’s direction. “Don’t come any closer or I’ll peck your eyes out… I… I swear it!” It gulped. A Wild Pidgey Appeared! Leve 5. It's holding Pecha Berry and knows Egg Move Uproar. What will Adrian do? Shiny: wtKFqXE_1-42 | Egg Move: 1-4 | Berry: (50%) 1-1001-42·1-4·1-100

Adrian watched his surroundings, idly observing the pokemon around him. Ratatta skittered through the grass and out of sight, little purple blurs of quick feet and sharp teeth. He certainly didn't want to spook one bad enough that it bit him. Even if it wouldn't have the power of its evolution's bite, no doubt he'd leave the encounter with a limp. So he was paying a good deal of attention to his feet when he heard the beat of wings. His gaze leapt upwards as those little brown birds fled from their feasting to take to the skies and branches high above, well out of reach. He would have readily kept walking if not for there being one pidgey remaining steadfast, kicking up dirt and making a scene, apparently protecting the berry it wanted to eat.
He shielded his face from the debris and Buddy eagerly jumped in front of him.
I won't let you hurt him! defended the bulbasaur with a cry of "Saur!"
Adrian realized quickly that he should probably do something here.
"Buddy, use, ah...tackle," he commanded, dithering for a moment to remember his new friend's moveset and the fact that grass type moves weren't all that effective on flying types. He watched as Buddy ran towards the bird to try to tackle it.

To prove its point, the pidgey tosses the sand and dirt it had broken loose. The debris lands into the eyes of the bulbasaur it is now facing. Pidgey hoped it would make a big enough difference to dissuade the Pokemon from the battle. The answer came from the blue green Pokemon following the human's order to tackle the pidgey. The scared pidgey is hit head on and is knocked back a few feet. It debates about retreating but then sees the pecha berries it and the other pidgey were eating. This encouraged the pidgey to fight harder for the food source. >>Nice...hit you moving bulb. I'll fight you to protect this area and the food supply. You won't get this win easily.<< The pidgey is trying to sound tougher than what it really is. The part of protecting food is true but does wonder about the winning chances. Pidgey watches the partial blinded bulbasaur debating what to do next. It could toss more debris into the eyes or could use its own tackle.

Buddy tackled the bird and Adrian smiled a bit without realizing it. Okay. Cool. They were working as a team, him and his new starter. "Good job!" he called out to the Bulbasaur as she whirled around to confront the Pidgey again. Before he could have Buddy tackle again, dirt was kicked up in the air and all over Buddy's face, causing her to flinch and shake her head to try to clear it. Pidgey weren't known for being especially strong so maybe he could just throw a ball at it? Then he could help get the dirt out of Buddy's eyes. But Buddy seemed to get her bearings after a moment.
I don't want your food, meanie!'
Adrian took Buddy's determined stance and expression to mean she wanted to keep battling. Hopefully that sand attack wouldn't cause too much hassle...
"Okay, Buddy. One more tackle!" One more good, solid hit should turn this battle in their favor. Right?
He watched as his new friend charged at the Pidgey, vision a little blurry, but full of vigor. When she thought she was close enough, she launched ahead to strike again with a cry.

The smell of fear clung to the pidgey even though it stayed put and was determined to defend the berry bush. Had it been later in the year it wouldn't have had the guts to defend it, but it had been a long winter and it was the first time of the year where it was really feeling full. It couldn't be seen due to its plumage but beneath all the feathers it was pretty thin. It puffed out all those feathers to look big and menacing and it glared at the walking plant. "You.. you all say that! I.. I don't believe you!" the Pidgey chirped nervously, Buddy and her trainer was not leaving after all, and what else could be the reason than the juicy berries which was behind it. "Don't your human feed you anyway?" The bird chirped accusingly, why were they so greedy they needed its berries as well? It chirped fearfully when Buddy charged at it, and it jumped around flappingly as it panicked tried to figure out what to do and fight the urge to run away and leave the situation completely. The sand it usually used to distract its attacker long enough to get away, but this time it hadn't gotten away, then what? It knew that other pokemon attacked each other, but it hadn't really tried that. "What should I do, what should I dooo?" It half wailed to itself while running in circles, Buddy missed her first tackle entirely because her irritated eyes made it hard to see and predict its movements. The pidgey didn't even notice, other than she was suddenly much closer and it jumped away protesting loudly. "I need the berries, but I don't know how to battle! I need the food!" It argued with itself and then spun around to jump at Buddy, only for its eyes to widen in shock when it realized she was just about to ram into it again. The two collided and the bulbasaur landed halfways on top of the much lighter bird. "Ow! My wing! My wing! Get off! Oww!" The pidgey screamed panicked and slapped Buddy with its other wing to get her off. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] pidgey LV 5 HP 60% [12/20]

Adrian winced as the Pidgey tackled Buddy in return, seemingly doing a great deal on impact... Ouch. But Buddy shook it off well enough to continue her attack and tackled the bird successfully once more. Adrian found himself sweating. Nervous. Okay. He really didn't think that it was a good idea to keep this up. What if Pidgey knew a flying move and knocked his starter out completely? Not that his opponent seemed as much aggressive as desperate. And that desperation tugged at him. Little thing looked super scared...
Okay. Right. They should end this as quickly as possible then.
"Out of the way, Buddy! I'm going to catch it." And he needed a clear shot. No telling whether his aim would be wildly off course.
Buddy, hearing that, climbed off the wild Pidgey with an apology. 'Sorry! Didn't mean to hurt your wing. Wasn't trying to! But you did start it...Tried telling you I didn't want your berry...' She lifted a vine to try to help her foe up when she remembered the command and scrambled backwards, out of the way and hopefully out of her trainer's line of fire. Oh this was exciting! Would they be making a new friend?! 'My trainer is going to try to catch you with a ball now! So try no to move around too much, okay?' as if she innocently couldn't fathom why anyone wouldn't want to be caught and become a trainer's companion.
Adrian, seeing Buddy move, took out a single pokeball from his pocket, expanded it with his thumb and...threw it right at the Pidgey!

Pidgey pecked at its wings preening away the damaged feathers. It would use its sharp beak to pluck them out one by one and spit them onto the ground. Then it tested the damaged wing, flapping it some as it hoped to lift itself back into the air though it struggled against the pain that shot through its body and racked every fiber within itself. Why weren’t they just leaving it alone so that it could feast on all the berries it had found? That’s all the wild bird wanted to do! Winter had just left but summer would be here soon, and then it would be too busy building nests and attracting mates to worry about stuffing its gullet with all the delicious berries it could find. “It you would have just left with your trainer, then my wing wouldn’t be hurt!” The Pidgey stated firmly, puffing up its chest feathers and flapping its wings as it tried to make itself look larger than it was. “Why does he want to catch me?!” Pidgey’s eyes widened in alarm and it hopped backwards away from them both to put a little more distance between itself and Buddy. “I didn’t ask to be captured, did I? No. I just wanted to eat my berries in peace and wanted you both to scram! So you bully me, break me wing, and imprison me?! How is that fair?!” Pidgey continued accusingly and demanded to know from Buddy. Whether Buddy would answer or not, Adrian’s red-and-white Poke Ball would soar through the air. A bright beam of red light swallowed the small bird up in the blink of an eye. As soon as the Poke Ball landed on the grassy ground, it would rock back and forth in the tall green grass as the bird struggled to break free. One… It tumbled about, knocking up against a small rock. Two… It rolled across the ground and into a muddy puddle. Three…ding! It chimed successfully and stopped moving as Adrian managed to capture the Pidgey in the small device. SUCCESS!!

Oh. Uh oh. Buddy made more apologies to the upset pidgey but she knew that the angry little bird had a point. If Buddy never tackled them, then nobody would have gotten hurt. Now the other pokemon was holding their wing oddly and looked like they were struggling to fly. However, before Buddy could say more, the ball bounced off the little bird and swallowed them up with bright light.
Adrian watched the pidgey struggle in the ball. It shook wildly and he worried it would either get lost in the bushes or break free. But neither happened. Despite getting a little dirty from thrashing around, the ball went still. He sighed. Relieved. Then pocketed the ball. He needed to tend the pidgey's wing, but first...
"C'mere Buddy. You did good." Adrian knelt and his bulbasaur hurried to put her front feet against his leg. He scratched her chin and then got out a water bottle and a rag from his back. Time to get the dirt out of her eyes. While the debris would probably clear on its own with time, he wanted to make sure Buddy wasn't uncomfortable for longer than need be. "You kept a level head better than I did..." After some proper affection and bonding, he stood up again and with another resigned sigh, withdrew the muddy ball. Time to wipe that down and check on the Pidgey inside.
With a gentle toss, he freed the bird within, who immediately began to flap and thrash about before leaping up into the air to perch...only to awkwardly land a few feet further down the path. Not one to just...let the poor thing suffer...Adrian spent the next however long playing chase with the darn pidgey until he could catch the thing again, but without a ball. After checking his 'dex, he determined the Pidgey was male, and after that whole cartoon moment, decided that his new 'friend' didn't like him all that much. Was this really all over a berry he wanted to eat? Maybe he should just call him Berry. Or Barry? "Let me look at that wing of yours, Barry." They could both be stubborn if they wanted to be.
Once 'Barry' calmed enough to be looked over, Adrian made sure nothing was broken and made a mental note to go to the pokemon center first thing when they reached Cherrygrove.
"Why don't you rest for a while," he told Barry after ensuring no lasting damage was done. And in a flash of light, Adrian and Buddy were ready to get back to the road ahead. Of course, neither were quite expecting to stumble off the beaten path and get LOST. There were only so many hours of daylight in which one could burn stumbling around what should have been a very easy path to Cherrygrove. Only so many people to meet in the woods. Eventually, somehow, they'd get turned back around towards Cherrygrove...Buddy one pretty stick covered in flowers happier with herself. He wanted to make it to town before dark, so hopefully...they'd get back to the main path before then...

While Adrian rested, other trainers rushed through the wild grasses in search of Pokemon that they could battle and capture. Small children giggled loudly as they faced off with long eared meerkats, commanding fire lizards and watery turtles in battles simultaneously in opposite directions from where Adrian was. Some other trainers scoured their way through the tall grasses gripping long poles that ended in wide nets. They would swing at the smallest movements in the grass, with some coming up empty-handed whilst others would scream cheerfully at the wild bug Pokemon they managed to scoop up inside of their nets. One lonesome bug trainer stood with his arms folded firmly on his hips and stared at a small floating disks with large, sad eyes. The tiny Pokemon cooed softly with a strange metallic sound and floated just out of hand’s reach as the strange trainer swung at it. “A thousand times, NO!” The trainer screamed at the top of his lungs, folding his arms firmly over his chest. When the Bronzor dodged his hands, he kicked his feet up high in the air. When the small Pokemon dodged his foot, the trainer chased him with his net, swinging it like a bat trying to club the Pokemon against the top of its head/body. “You’re useless! I never wanted you! You won’t ever amount to anything good, so why are you even trying?! You know how you could help me?! By getting lost and pretending we never met!” Should Adrian intervene with the lad, he would simply turn towards the trainer and point to the Bronzor with wide shrugs of his shoulders. He was a bug catcher. No, better than that! He was a bug enthusiast! Augustine had no need to waste his time on such a weak little steel type that was impossible to train and only seemed to cause him more trouble than it was worth. “Listen bub. I’m, dealing with my Pokemon and I won’t have you interrupting…understand?!” He growled, balling up on of his fists at his side. Then, Augustine would smirk and immediately pull out a Poke Ball with a raised eyebrow. “Or do you think you’re tough enough to defeat me? Hmm?” He would challenge Adrian. He must be closer to the main path with so many kids running around.
Adrian found himself mildly amused by their antics, watching them race around and swing their nets. Not the most traditional way to catch pokemon, but it seemed to be working for them. A triumphant lad scooped a whole wurmple off a nearby tree right in front of him before running off in victory, the poor, confused bug dangling from the net. He was pretty sure the kid didn't even notice him, so enthusiastic about capturing his newest friend. Absently, his hand drifted to his pocket where Bug was inside her ball, safe and sound and all cozy. He didn't want to fist fight an aggressively excited child over the poor scatterbug should one see her on his shoulder and think her fair game. Because he would. He wasn't above punching a middle schooler. He'd feel terrible afterwards, but—
“A thousand times, NO!”
—what was that?
Adrian snapped his gaze from the wurmple hunter to another kid who was swinging his net at a...uh...metal disk? THAT was not native to kanto nor was it listed on his PokeGear as endemic to the area. He pulled out his pokedex and pointed it in their direction, frowning as the little, digitized voice identified the creature.
'Bronzor the Bronze Pokemon. They are found in ancient tombs. The patterns on their backs are said to be imbued with mysterious power.'
Why was the kid yelling at it? Wait. Was that brat trying to hit the bronzor? For what? Existing?! Not being a bug? Adrian curled his hands into fists, anger spiking. He would have been content to have just walked off, but the bronzor was clearly upset and just trying to be friendly (was probably even lost given the fact it was in the woods). In fact, odds were, the thing was likely abandoned out here. Why else would it be approaching trainers? Especially hostile ones. Unless...that kid was its trainer and was trying to actively abandon it. Which was even worse.
"HEY! CUT IT OUT, YOU MISERABLE BRAT! OR I'LL TAKE YOUR NET AND BREAK IT OVER YOUR HEAD SO YOU KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE HIT WITH IT!" Okay. Not the most appropriate reaction, threatening to assault someone half his age...but maybe the kid would spook and run off because of an angry adult coming their way. But no. NO. Instead, the little snot-nosed punk, with his bright ideas and audacity to challenge him to a battle. (Why did kids his age always seem to be ready to throw hands with arceus itself at any moment?) "Tch. Fine. You want it that way. If I win, you'll scram."
He knew that Buddy probably wasn't the best choice for this fight, and Bug probably wouldn't do too hot either. So he drew Barry's ball with a grimace. Okay champ. Time to see if Barry was rested enough and settled down enough to be willing to battle. He threw the ball, unleashing his freshly caught Pidgey, who immediately spread his wings and started to flap and fuss. He was regretting his choice until he remembered what he saw on Barry's moveset on his PokeGear when he checked him out. Adrian would just redirect that upset in a useful manner.
"Barry! Use Uproar on that ledyba!"
The fussy pidgey did not have to be told twice. He was fit to have a tiff as it were. First he was attacked while trying to eat and protect his berries. Then he was captured. And now, there was this bug, reminding him of how hungry he was! Misdirected anger anyone? Barry screeched out a furious battle cry of frustration as he swooped and pecked and flapped his wings with enough noise to wake the sleeping dead.

The kid seemed to have no fear of Adrian, trying to seem intimidating as he puffed himself up in front of the older trainer. "Don't stick you nose where it don't belong! You are just saying things to scare me, but I'm not scared!" Augustine more less shouted at Adrian. When the pidgey was called out his scoffed and spun around and ran a few meters away where he spun around and threw a pokeball into the air. A ladybug pokemon with striking red colors, clearly well taken care of, appeared and opened her shell in her back to get her wings out and stay airborne. "You are stupid! You don't understand a thing! No adults are!" Augustine rambled on furiously, "Imma going to be the best of the best with bugs! Imma going to be better than Aaron! And what does my Nanny give me? A stupid steel type that's even ugly! It's so weird! What use do I have for that? I have even told her I want to be an Elite for with my bugs, but she just keeps saying they are gross! Bugs are not gross! They are cool!" He shouted and could clearly have continued his rant if not the bronzor had came floating over and gave him a light nudge, to try win him over. Augustine's face contorted in disgust and he pushed it away harshly, at least he didn't try to hit it this time. "Get lost!" He shouted at it, "I released you for a reason! Try get it you dumb thing! I don't want you!"The bronzor floated a bit away from the kid, even though it didn't really have any face or a way to show body language, it did really look nervous and lost. The ladyba was feminine to the point and she watched the agitated bird aloof, she winced when Barry began to scream his lungs out. "Stop that, hey! I'm talking to you, you don't need to scream, I'm not deaf! Hey. Hey, listen! HEY!" She tried to get through to him but to no avail. She looked rather offended. "Ugh! This is why I train bugs!" Augustin complained loudly as he shielded his ears against the sound, "Lady! Stop it, please!" He called much kinder to his ledyba. The bug zoomed up to Barry and looked at him sternly, when her look didn't do the trick, she gave him a hard shove which would temporarily stop his screeching. "Finally! What are you screaming for? Your trainer so horrible?" She said annoyed, "now calm down and we can solve this, no need to be violent." She huffed. Barry was shoved by the ledyba and quieted for a moment, wings still flapping in upset. I am having the absolute worst day of my life! I just wanted to eat my berries and now I'm here! If I was just a little bigger, I'd eat you instead! He really was more bluster than bite, but he had yet to come to terms quite yet with being captured. A part of him wished he was like those big, scary pidgeotto who could eat whole caterpies. Then maybe this ledyba wouldn't try to push him around and make his bad day worse. Unable to contain himself for any longer, he screeched again and went back to venting his frustrations on the bug-type as he kept raising an Uproar.
Adrian glared at the bug catcher. Barry was doing fine on his own for now and handling the fight. His still out pokedex chimed something about the ledyba in front of him, but he was too distracted by his upset to pay attention. So this was some horrid rich kid who wanted to become better than an elite four member? One spoiled enough to have a NANNY? As respectable as having a dream like that was to have, the way he treated other types of pokemon was unforgivable. Clearly someone needed to have been spanked more when he was younger...Maybe then Adrian wouldn't feel a very strong urge to dunk his head in a toilet. He knew where there was a pond nearish by. He could probably pick the kid up and throw him in.
Though that probably would get him arrested for some variety of child endangerment or assault.
Why did he have to be a snot-nosed brat?
"I've been a trainer all of half a day and I think I'm already better than you and your stupid, gross bugs," Adrian taunted with a mean sneer. "Future elite? Bah. You're never gonna be nothin' but a pitiful, spoiled brat. Be better than Aaron? With a ledyba? And a nanny? Might as well give up now!"
Amazing how much being angry and frustrated about it inspired him to actually speak. One could argue that it wasn't healthy to primarily lash out when your emotions were high, but he'd say this was an improvement. Nobody's gotten a black eye or dumped in a mud puddle.

Lady landed on a nearby wildflower and began to clean herself fastidiously with her many legs. There was so much dirt and grim that clung to her wings, though! Her opponent was rude, his trainer was rude, and her trainer was being a bit melodramatic about the extra Pokemon they weren’t even going to keep anyways. “Eat me?!” Lady scoffed, tilting her head back and cackling loudly as though it was the funniest thing she had ever heard. “You can’t beat a future Elite Four’s champion Pokemon, my dear! Augustine and I have dreams. BIG dreams! Ones you’ll never steal away from us!”Barry’s uproar would continue though, as the small brown bird made a loud racket that only dug into Lady’s ears and seemed to hurt her more. She pressed her head inside of the flower, trying to drown out the sound to very little success. Eventually, she would fly back to her trainer looking like a beat up old doll and begged Augustine to return her back to her Poke Ball by tapping it with one of her feet, before completely collapsing on the ground by her feet. “I’M NOT SPOILED! You’re just some stupid meanie who likes to pick on kids because you think we’re weaker than you!” Augustine snapped, recalling his small red ladybug with the click of a button. The pulled out another Poke Ball and called out his Ninja, who just stared at the bird with wide eyes and shivered. The blank look in Ninja’s eyes suggested he was reliving terrible memories of birds in the past, who might have swooped after him and chased him all around his native wilderness. “See Ninja?! Ain’t he great?! Momma and Daddy got him for me because I got Honor Roll last year! And now he’s gunna wipe the floor with your sorry Pokemon!” Augustine boasted pridefully as Ninja began digging a small hole in the ground as though to bury itself. “We’ll show you whose stupid and gross! You’d better apologize now! ‘Sides, just look at that stupid Pokemon and tell me who would want this Steel Type, huh? No one!” Augustine snapped, while the Bronzor cried pitifully nearby. "That's real rich, coming from you! What did that bronzor ever do to you except try to be accepted?! You hit him with a net and screamed at him. Consider this fair play, brat. Go cry about it to mommy and daddy later."
Adrian was a big meanie. One shouldn't bully or yell at children. But he was mad and viscerally upset by the brat's actions right before his eyes. Today it was cruelty to a pokemon who did him no wrong. Tomorrow it would be picking on some kid smaller than him. Next he'd be slapping his girlfriend for embarrassing him at a party when he's fully grown and should have learned better. And if Adrian had a better upbringing and a better hold on his temper, and didn't learn how to deal with his problems from a drunkard, then maybe he wouldn't be escalating the situation so vocally. He literally trembled with self-righteous ire.
(Don't punch the child. Don't punt kick the child. Don't grab the child by the shirt and hang him from a tree branch. Don't haul child to the nearest lake and drop him in it. Don't shove child into a mud puddle. Don't take child's net and break it. Just breathe, Adrian. Breathe and settle this like a trainer rather than a meathead.)
As he argued with the kid, the ledyba was defeated and returned to her ball. The battle wasn't yet over. And the kid was still just as bratty as when the battle started.
"Maybe mommy and daddy would take away your Ninja if someone told them what you did to other pokemon? Because their little honor roll student is a bully with a head full of bugs." He didn't bring Barry back into his ball. Not that he was sure if he could. He hadn't stopped throwing a fit. Barry flew over to the slightly buried Nincaida and kept screeching and flapping his wings and raising an utter riot about how everything was terrible, and how he was hungry. Though, he did find himself weary and at last, his uproar would dwindle, leaving the pidgey grounded and panting to catch his breath.
