Another day in the park [BCC]

Aglaia exhaled and tried to relax, it was going to be alright and there were no high demands for her today. Lei had been happy for what little she had accomplished last time and thrilled when she heard Aglaia had more or less evolved her Venusaur by participating. She had been asked to continue to bring Smokey to the Bug Catching Contest and do the same with her, and of course catch whatever bug she came across, which Lei didn't have already.
The young trainer had agreed, she was already training a bunch of Lei's pokemon while Dorthea was occupied elsewhere, so one more made no difference. Lei had declared she would make sure Aglaia was going to be more than pleased with the reward for her hard work, and had continued to try prod her for what she might be interested in getting. Aglaia had dodged the question and changed the topic, she knew what she wanted but she wanted to build it up herself from the bottom, and not get it handed to her.

With the hippopotas at her side, she watched the other contestants, they seemed much more relaxed than usual like they had no worries in the world. Often they had fidgeted while waiting for the competition to start, and rushed off the moment they were allowed to but today they all waited patiently.
There were the expected fire types and birds around, but grass types seemed pretty popular as well, which would be odd if you didn't know about the movement hindering moves which they often had. Speaking of that, as the competition started and they all spread out, the man with the lilligant was quick to claim a rather big area as his as he got his pokemon to spread spores to slow down any bugs which might be hiding there. Any other trainer would be stupid to move in there, as they too would be affected. One kid with a net seemed to want to try take advantage of it, as he placed himself near the man and watched the grass as intently as he did.

Aglaia gestured to Smokey and the hippopotas trotted straight into the tall grass to try flush something out.

A small worm-like Pokemon covered in leaves slowly crawls out of the tall grass. It watched Aglaia and her hippo nervously, as though it's not sure what to make of them.

The grass rustled and it was clear that Smokey's entering into the grass was noticed, most of whatever was hiding in there, was scurrying away to safety and didn't want to meet her. Aglaia was actually fine with that since it didn't really matter what pokemon she encountered, but also since the one remaining must be one who was interested in a fight.
Aglaia looked around while she waited, it looked like most of the other contestants had found something to battle already, although by the lack of excitement cheers, they had all yet to run into something really rare and sought after. Instead it looked like there were an abundance of combees this year.

Something moved towards her in the grass and Aglaia narrowed her eyes, a little bug covered in leaves peeked out and then hesitantly crawled all the way out of the grass. Smokey came trotting after looking proud at what she had herded out of the grass.
"Sewaddle, that one I know Lei already got," Aglaia commented, remembering that she herself had caught one of these in the past. "I'm sure you'll find another good trainer but I will give you a battle at least," she promised and Smokey took a battlestance.
"This is part grass type Smokey, so your ground move will be really bad. Go for Crunch," Aglaia explained and Smokey rolled her eyes, of course it was, she knew what she could do.

Smokey's excitement cause sand to fizzle out of her body excitedly. Her big mouth took a strong bite out of the Sewaddle. The bug type tried to do the same with its weaker bite, but it was no match against Smokey's powerful mouth. The bug type fled as soon as it was out of Smokey's mouth.

Aglaia had forgotten all about Smokey's sandstorm starting abilities and she stumbled back with raised arms to protect her face as the sand started to swirl around. It also made it really clear, really fast to the sewaddle what Aglaia and her hippo was up to, if it didn't understand human speech when it was directly told.
The sewaddle seemed to made to perfectly fit into Smokey's mouth and Aglaia couldn't help but wince and feel sorry for the little guy, who frantically bit back the best it could, until it got free of Smokey's deathgrib and then it ran off into the tall grass.
The trainer breathed a sigh of relief that it seemed to be alright, and now the battle was over the sand died down again.

"You are getting strong fast!" Aglaia praised and Smokey snorted and raised her head proudly, of course she was.
"Hi Hippo!" Smokey said and gestured for Aglaia to follow her, time to show off some of her leadership skills and awesome tactics. There weren't many others to push around so Aglaia would have to do.
Trotting through grass was all good and nice but if she really wanted to encounter something more exciting that a little fashion interested bug, they would need to do something more.
They found another patch of grass and Smokey began to circle it and jumped the moment she saw some movement inside.

A small lightning bug flies towards Smokey with hearts in its eyes. Could that be the Illumise it's been looking for all its life?! It sure was a funny looking Illumise...but LOVE IS BLIND right?! So let it dream, pppllleeeaaassseee?!

Smokey's attempts to flush out a pokemon from the patch of grass certainly did work, just not the way she had expected. She had expected it to be scared of her, or perhaps if she was lucky it was a powerful and confident one, provoked and aggressive towards her. that the shadow she jumped on in the grass, neither ran off or tried to battle her, instead it swooned and buzzed lovestruck at her with its arms open wide. She scrambled back and dug underground to try avoid it.
When she popped up again a bit further down the path, the first she saw was that the volbeat was called for her down the hole she had dug, and then that Aglaia was pressing her hand to her mouth trying to contain her laughter.
Smokey's expression darkened, she was not going to be humiliated!

"Hey! Dumbass, what do you think you are doing?! That was not cool!" She shouted furiously at the volbeat who's head shot up from the whole and a dumb grin spread on its face when it saw her.
"I love you! You are the most magnificent creature I have ever seen!" It cooed and zoomed over to her.
"Stop!" She demanded and it paused in front of her and giggled sillily. Smokey narrowed her eyes and fidgeted a bit, it was nice someone liking her, but it wasn't what she had been looking for. A laugh escaped Aglaia and Smokey snorted, "I don't believe you! You are just trying to make fun of me and make me a laughing stock! Apologize immediately!"
The volbeat inched closer and tried to press itself up against her side, "how can I apologize for my love, my Love? I will love you forever and ever, and I will make you the softest nest and find you the nicest flowers. I will guard you from everyone else and danse for you every night." The volbeat rambled on and didn't notice the sand which began to swirl around them as Smokey stared at it.

Volbeat rushed toward the Hippopotas to get a hug, but accidentally slammed onto her instead. "I AM SORRY MY LOVE, but wow, your skin is nice!" Then, he got crunched by the ground type. The sandstorm released by the Hippopotas made it difficult for the Volbeat to fly away, so he flew weirdly with his tail-light on, creating a confusing light pattern for the Hippopotas. Thankfully, Smokey was able to concentrate and gave the bug one final crunch.

While words didn't get through to the lovestruck volbeat at least her actions were, at the second bite the volbeat seemed to finally get the hint and flapped off rather painfully, wailing about broken hearts and that no-one was its soulmate and that it was going to be alone forever. If the bug hoped that its pathetic complains was going to get it anywhere with Smokey, it was going to be disappointed, she had turned her minds to other things the moment she got rid of it.

Smokey glared at Aglaia who did her best to keep her face under control and not outright laugh her in the face, but she couldn't hide her smile. Smokey stomped her foot frustrated, she would show her, she would show them all that she was no laughing stock! That she had the best plans and the best ways to find what Aglaia and in the end Lei would need.
She turned her back to her temporary trainer and looked around at the park, how could she best lure out another pokemon for her to battle? She smirked, and then started up her sandstorm which would swirl around and cut through the grass and leaves.

Smokey had pretty good control of the situation and Aglaia honestly didn't have to do much. She of course needed to be aware and ready should something appear Lei would want now Smokey's swirling sand included a risk of chasing them off before she got the chance to throw a ball.
She looked around and was surprised to see how many butterfrees, caterpies and metapods which was around, they were really just everywhere! Aglaia pulled out her list of pokemon Lei was interested in and noticed that it was one of the ones Lei was interested in, she frowned worried at the sand Smokey had started and hoped it didn't mean it was going to be any trouble for her.

As Smokey's sandstorm began to swirl around and batter the tall grass, it became clear just how many butterfrees which were around this BCC. Several of them took flight to get away, flying in the opposite direction of Smokey and Aglaia and therefore had no trouble avoiding a battle. Smokey shouted after them but they didn't care to stay around and battle her just because she demanded it. She ran after then through the grass and chased several caterpies out as well, who scurried in a lot of different directions but Smokey ignored them as the butterfrees clearly were stronger and a more worthy opponent.
She also toppled over a couple of metapods but barely noticed them as they seemed to be the least intimidating of them all.

Aglaia wondered why there were so many caterpies, metapods and butterfrees this year. She was sure there had been a lot fewer the last times she had participated. Was it because there had been some really good years for the pokemon so they flourishing? Or was it because there were fewer other bug pokemon left due to the contest being held so many times in a year? After some more thought Aglaia felt sure it wasn't the competition which was the problem, there weren't that many participants and they only caught on each, so it was a lot fewer than on a normal route.

While the human pondered she spotted a small caterpie who had sneaked the opposite way of all the others, clearly thinking itself really clever as it attempted to get away from the sandstorm inducing hippo. It would have worked wonders if not Aglaia had been there, and while the caterpie had all its attention on where Smokey was and had a limited vision due to the sand, Aglaia quickly checked the paper she had gotten from Lei and when having confirmed that caterpie was one of the pokemon Lei was missing, she looped a sport ball at it.

Aglaia hit the caterpie straight on which surprised her even though it shouldn't, caterpies were notoriously easy to catch, the only real thing you should be worried about was if they released that predator-repellant smell from their antennae's, as it was foul smelling. Aglaia was not used to be good at this pokemon training and catching stuff, she had read stories where trainers were claiming there were some parts of the job they had special abilities in and she had always found it ridiculous.
Of course you could have a good eye-hand coordination which could make you a good thrower, and some were good and laying tactics, but that you could learn, and some definitely had a sixth sense when it came to understanding pokemon, one that Aglaia doubted she ever would get. She was sure a lot of that came from people just being around pokemon a lot, which she herself hadn't before being forced out on this journey. Not that she would be without now, she had seen and gotten too many friends in her pokemon along the way to miss out on that.
When it came to people's special skills, Aglaia wondered if some people really thought it was a thing or if it was just something the authors made up to make their characters more unique and special? Aglaia preferred things more natural, the other thing just made it too easy for the main character, that they suddenly knew something or could do something which they shouldn't be able to do, like the one silly one she ones read where the trainer caught a legendary pokemon because he got the pokeball to bounce off of things and hit the pokemon in the neck, so it was taken by surprise. And in first try without any battling, just because he was so "special" at throwing.

"Hey! Smokey! I got the Caterpie, lets see if we can find something else you can battle," Aglaia called out shielding her face against the sand. Smokey had been stomping around frustrated in the grass, still not seeing any of the metapods and having chased off all the crawling bugs and flying butterflies, it was clear her sandstorm approach didn't work when there were too many other escape routes.
Smokey looked back at Aglaia surprised, then at her hand which now held the sport ball, then back up at her face. She blinked a few times and then trotted back to her proudly and looked expectantly at her, ready for her praise for her part of the work.
"I'm sure Lei will be pleased, so we don't need to find anything else important but we can just as well take advantage of it and give you some more training," Aglaia said encouragingly and turned to walk on.
"Hippo!" Smokey protested loudly and Aglaia looked back at her confused. No, she certainly didn't have that skill of understanding the pokemon.
"What is it?" the trainer asked cluelessly and Smokey pouted, why was this human so dense?
"Hippopotas! Potas Po! Hippo!" She explained loud and clear but Aglaia just looked even more confused, Smokey's attempts to look proud did not help clear up the misunderstanding.
"If.. if you have gotten enough, we an call it a day and head back with this?" Aglaia said slowly, not thinking it fitted well with how the hippopotas had acted until now.
"Hippo!" Smokey gasped horrified, quiet?! NOW?! Was this human crazy! She rushed past Aglaia, shouting for her to follow as she frantically looked for something to battle. She would just have to show this dumb human what it was all about.

"Smokey! Where are you going?" Aglaia called and glanced around as she had to run to keep up with her agitated hippopotas. She cursed herself and her inability to understand the pokemon, she felt that she so often misunderstood them and then they in frustration did something which was completely unpredictable to her, although a lot of them ran off like this.
"Oh I wish I had Dorthea to talk about this stuff," She panted as she tried to keep her very fast hippopotas in sight, the ground type clearly was a headstrong one but Aglaia found it very hard to understand Smokey when she one moment was a human pleaser and the next on ran off angry with her.
"Smokey!" She shouted after the pokemon, but then the hippopotas literally dived into the ground and left the human behind at the hole in ground, fighting to catch her breath. Aglaia kept her eyes locked at the ground, her cheeks burning with shame and she dearly hope no one around had seen her lose control that much. One thing was when it happened when you were alone out in the wild, or while being along with someone you knew and trusted, but around a lot of strangers it was just embarrasing.
Aglaia blushed even more when she heard a faint snigger, she refused to look up and focused her attention at the hole.
"Smokey? Are you alright? Will you please come up again?" She called softly down into the hole but got no response.

Aglaia squatted and leaned back on her heels as she watched the hole thoughtfully, she had to think and try guess what was going on when the pokemon couldn't tell her, and Smokey clearly wasn't going to pop back up and make ammends.
It seemed like the problems had started when Aglaia had caught the caterpie, but Smokey knew that it was the reason for why they were here and last year it had been no trouble at all. "So I caught it and told her and then she got upset and I suggested we ended it quickly," Aglaia mumbled to herself, resting her chin in her hand. "She got really agitated afterwards so finishing the competition and battling she really didn't wanted, that made it worse. But what was the problem at first?" She pondered and was quiet for some time.
"Perhaps that she didn't really face it and battled?" She mused, seemed plausible actually.

Meanwhile Smokey popped up from the ground a bit away from Aglaia, she quickly noted where her leant trainer was at and then looked around for anything to battle and to impress Aglaia with. She spotted something in the grass and smirked, she had actually found the perfect way to sneak up on an opponent, why hadn't she thought about that before? She buried down and quickly made her way towards the pokemon she had found. The silcoon's eyes widened in alarm when a huge mouth slowly emerged from the ground and showed some impressive sized teeth, the bug had thought it had been a safe hiding spot it had chosen, it had been invisible from above!
"Don't worry, just relax," Smokey said mischievously and yawned long and deep, the silcoon stared at her like she was crazy. How was it ever going to relax and fall asleep when something as strange and worryingly as the hippopotas was this close to it? It had no clue what Smokey had planned and it was not going to trust her one bit! It felt a yawn pressing on, which startled it as it knew it had no mouth and hadn't felt anything like that since it had been a wurmple!
