Name: Jade "Wren" Undergrove
Age: 22
Gender: Assigned Female at Birth, Nonbinary (They/She)
Trainer Type: Future Contest Coordinator, Junior Trainer.
Hometown: Ballonlea, Galar.
Appearance:
Wren has sickly pale white skin, in a slender frame, standing at about 5'11''. They often carry an insecure demeanor, slightly slouched or holding their arms defensively into themselves. They have amber, downturned eyes. Their dark cyan hair flows in two braids falling at their middle back, punctuated by a gold-and-black hairpin on their side-swept bangs similar in shape to their mother's first Pokémon; a Combee.
Their general trainer-outfit consists of a no-sleeve zip-up turtleneck, short black shorts, a black jacket with gold striped accents, a matching belt, thigh-high socks with gold rectangles chained around the tops, matching black running-shoes with a two-inch heel and gold accents. Their final accessory is black gloves with dark blue finger paddings. The outfit is brand new and well taken care of in terms of quality.
On warmer days they go without the jacket and shorter socks, and in the sun they sunburn really easily. Colder days, they have an Iconic Style tracksuit from Galar; orange with black accents.
They carry a large, tacky tourist tote bag with bold white font, sporting the phrase: "I <3 Galar!" with the heart being a down-turned Luvdisk on the side.
General Appearance.
Colder Weather.
Personality:
Wren is heavily sheltered, but a caretaker. They took care of their chronically ill mother up until their move to New Bark Town in Johto. They have a newfound confidence after coming out as nonbinary and taking up the name "Wren". They're first to hesitate, but can be surprisingly brave under pressure. She is empathetic, and treats her Pokémon as if they were close friends. They are perceptive, and able to notice the subtlest of body-language.
They can be referred to as a "Type A"; competitive in the work force before their journey. Patience is a trait that has slowly been learned over the years, and is sometimes able to pull back the impulse of impatience in a difficult situation.
Introverted; if others are welcoming, they come out of their shell to make pleasant conversation, avoiding awkwardness if at all possible. If embarrassed or in a hostile interaction, they clam up and make as little eye contact and or conversation as they can.
Close friends would call Wren trustworthy and loyal. They wear their heart on their sleeve and tend to tunnel-vision on helping their friends if they can help it. They're the type you would call to babysit your Hattena due to their good vibes and fantastic poffins.
Wren is milquetoast, but past small talk can result in more abstract concepts of conversation and out-of-the-blue inquiries. More often than not, this behavior is followed by a defensive "Just wondering!".
Used to be timid and nonconfrontational from past emotional traumas, but egotistical people make them sassy and condescending.
They often fiddle with something when speaking, but make stifling eye contact when being spoken to. Very rarely will they stand still, and if so they would be stiff.
History:
Wren was adopted at four years old by a woman named Jessica Undergrove. Jessica was a single mother who worked in the Ballonlea Gym as a stagehand. Jessica's daughter, Charlotta Undergrove, is Wren's elder sister by five years. Charlotta became a pokémon trainer and is currently travelling around the world as an ace trainer.
Wren had lived with their mother and Charlotta before their sister's pokémon journey, working as a waitress in a hole-in-the-wall café in Ballonlea. The majority of her pay went to her mother's medicine until she could rely on retirement. Old age and illness reared its ugly head and effected Jessica’s well being and psyche. She tended to lash out at Wren, seemingly for no good reason. This behavior caused Wren to be timid and nonconfrontational.
Growing up, Wren had a fascination with contests in Hoenn and Sinnoh, watching them to a fastidious degree as a form of escapism. One such coordinator only utilized water types, even against unruly matchups of grass or electric types. The trainer always found a way to demonstrate beauty and power with as a show of true strength and confidence in their abilities. Most of the time they would even win! The reality of those performances gave them the drive they needed to continue working her part time job, with hope that someday they can do the perform the same. This gave them the idea to someday find a type that they synergize with the best, whatever that may be.
Wren had been introduced to her mother’s pet pokémon, Cinccino. She learned from an early age to show respect to pokémon no matter how they acted, even when Cinccino was grumpy about not being brushed enough. With their mother’s debilitating health, responsibility of taking care of Cinccino fell to them most of the time. They even used some of the money they saved up in order to feed the pokémon quality pokébeans from Alola, as a way to keep her coat luscious. Taking care of Cinccino was like taking care of a child to them.
Wren’s relationship with Charlotta is long distance, as she is currently in Hoenn, but they both keep in touch thanks to modern technology. Wren makes sure to call once a week to ask about updated on their sister’s journey to become an ace trainer. They are very close, sometimes video-calling on late nights just to chat and catch up.
To Wren's reluctance, their mother convinced them to move in with her and her new husband, Blake Woods, to New Bark Town in search of a "change in scenery". A few months before the move, Jessica sat Wren down to chat with her about going to see the world as a trainer on a search for self discovery.
“It’s only fair- you were there for me longer than you ever needed or wanted to be. Go enjoy yourself out in the world… and of course, call and text me, kiddo.”
Wren came to the conclusion that after five years of working in Galar, a change of pace was exactly what they needed to become a coordinator- even if that meant travelling alone in a different region or two...
Wren used the money they amassed to treat themselves and get new clothes for their potential journey. They took a Corviknight to Motostoke to go shopping, gathering a few sets of travelling clothes, jackets, sweatsuits– an entire wardrobe to replace her old hand-me-downs. The retail therapy was cathartic and thrilling, as this meant she was one more step closer to their journey.
Wren has had a handful of close friends throughout the years growing up in Ballonlea. Some come and go, but none hold a candle to their best friend, Avery. She still works at the same café Wren did while also going to medical school. They call and text nearly every day to shoot the breeze and update on the move to Johto.
Within daydreams and fantasies within their head, Wren carefully planned out how they would specialize in a single type for contests, although they weren’t entirely sure what type to choose yet. The fairy type made sense considering how often they witnessed gym battles in Ballonlea, but it simply wasn’t them. They had to figure that out themselves.
In order to keep themselves occupied post move, Wren offered to mow the lawns and do odd-jobs for Professor Elm and their other neighbors. Learning that their mother had talked to Elm about offering them a starter pokémon was a pleasant surprise which leads them to the starting point of their journey.
Goals:
- As a newbie trainer, Wren's number one goal is to learn all they can about pokémon as to be an efficient trainer. They wish to start small in any town that offers contests and become a coordinator.
- As a long-term goal, they consider it a pipe-dream to become an established coordinator with a specialized pokémon type of their choosing. Specializing in one type and succeeding in the abstract art of contests is a novel concept to them.
- As a goal that's just-for-funzies, they dream of finding their sister somewhere out there in the wild and battling them in order to show off how far they have come.
