Summer was quite the temperamental season. One minute Adrian felt like he was melting under the sweltering heat and the next, it was pouring down rain! Quite violently too. He was tempted to wait out the rain in the pokemon center, but he really did need to get moving towards Violet. With all of his stuff secured in his backpack (thankfully which was rather waterproof itself), he armed himself with a recently purchased umbrella and headed out.
Already, puddles were forming on the streets. Buddy happily splashed away, hopping from puddle-to-puddle without a care in the world. Adrian watched her play with amusement before absently checking his PokeGear for reports on the weather. Though he didn't have high hopes that this would clear up any time soon. As he did so, a little notif popped up. Huh. Spam email? Or more welcome to Johto emails?
Absently he found himself looking at foreclosed property listings. As if he could afford anything. Though. If he was going to be a breeder, he'd probably need an actual location. Hard to build a trustworthy service if you're always wandering around with no real roof over your head. Getting rained on. Sigh.
He'd get there.
For some reason, he found himself saving a link to a rundown lot formerly known as 'Healing Hearts Ranch'. The listing described the house as having good bones and needing a patient hand to getting it up to being habitable again. All the pictures were of an overgrown mess. But it was cheaper than dirt, likely because it was in the middle of nowhere and in such poor shape.
Buddy alerted him with a cheerful cry and he looked up from his 'gear. He couldn't tell what she was excited about. Maybe another puddle? He was just glad she was so cheerful after that whole...well...getting lost in the dark forest incident recently. Sure, he had a couple new pokemon now, but...well...he was still concerned about his first partner being traumatized by the whole event.
His gut twisted a bit.
Shame tugged at him.
He did such a bad job being a good trainer to Buddy, and yet here she was, acting as if nothing happened. Adrian's hand dropped to his hip where Merc's ball rested. He'd train the fire-type. Because he refused to let the fear and guilt consume him. Even if said fire-type was a merciless fighter who nearly knocked out Buddy and Sarge all by itself.
Suddenly, Buddy was tugging at his pants leg. She looked...urgent. Determined. What? What was going on? Adrian frowned softly as she ran off again to go nudge at a nearby trashbin. It was the sort that was plastic with a lid that flipped open on a hinge when you wanted to throw stuff away and could be pushed around on the set of wheels at the back. He couldn't imagine her wanting to eat rubbish, so there had to be a good reason for her to be acting out.
He went over to it, still confused as the grass-type pushed at the side of the bin with her head with an insistent cry of 'bulba'! Okay. Something was up. With a grimace, he glanced side to side to make sure nobody thought he was being a creep, before opening the lid. Inside, shivering and flickering dully, was a little candle. It peered up at him with a shiver of its ghostly flame before vanishing from sight.
A second later, it re-appeared, looking lethargic from that effort.
Clearly, this rain wasn't any good for it.
"Hey...it's okay. I'll help you if you'll let me," he murmured, holding the umbrella over the bin. Adrian didn't know what this pokemon was, but he didn't need to know, to know it was a pokemon in need. It stared at him for a moment before floating up to join him under the umbrella.
"Trust me?" he asked, before finding an overhang where he could lay aside the umbrella for a moment to do his best to look the pokemon over. It seemed okay, if a little dull from possibly getting wet earlier. "You'll have to wait out the storm, friend. Maybe..." He was starting to think of where the fire-ghost could shelter when is phased right into his backpack.
Nothing caught on fire so...
"Or...you could do that. That is something you can do."
What a strange past few days.
Adrian looked again at Buddy, who was cheerfully beaming up at him, quite proud of herself.
"You knew this would happen, didn't you?" He shook his head and opened up his umbrella. Okay. NOW all the distractions were over. He could head out towards Violet. Still. No harm in splashing through one or two puddles here in Cherrygrove before heading out onto the route leading towards the next city and the location of his first badge.

Most people wouldn't like the rain, and would rather wait it out or get through the outdoor as quickly as possible. Adrian initially would have thought to stay inside a Pokemon Center, but ultimately he had decided to grab an umbrella and moved on. The rain poured hard as some wind splashed some raindrops onto his black leather jacket. Thankfully, the worn outerwear couldn't be anymore tarnished from the weather than it already had. On the roads, there were very few people walking around, like businessman finishing their work and wanting to go home for a nice warm shower and toasty warm meal. Or some weirdos in training outfit jogging with a Makuhita and Glameow behind him, splashing and making puddles as they practiced mindfulness even in the heavy rain. This wasn't a light sprinkle in the spring either! As if that wasn't weird enough, Adrian soon came upon a Skitty and Taillow fighting over something. When the Taillow stepped on the mysterious something, it made a squeaky noise! "What is this?" The bird cawed. Then, the toy bounced away from the impact where the Skitty was, where the cat tapped it with its front paw and the toy squeaked and moved again! "I found this weird thing first! Now if only I can grab onto it!" It meowed. The two would continue to investigate and to examine this mysterious toy, each time splashing the water around to make a mess! Should Adrian intervene, one of them would definitely grab the toy and run away!

Adrian watched the weirdos pass as they jogged in the rain. He'd never seen either of those pokemon before...Maybe he would ask them where they found them. Or maybe he'd stay mute and say nothing. He really wasn't the best at conversation and starting them with strangers wasn't easy. Sure, if he was upset, he tended to spout off at the mouth, but on days like this, where everyone was minding their own business? He was as keen as anyone to just keep his head down and his mouth shut. To trudge onwards in the murky wet. However, as minded his own business like a good citizen, occasionally wiping water off his shoulder where the umbrella failed to fully shelter him, something caught his eyes and ears.
Buddy perked up too.
Some kind of odd dispute was going on between two pokemon over a...toy? It was hard to tell from this distance. He didn't want to spook them, so he crouched, trying to make himself look at least a little smaller...This was supposedly how you approached easily startled pokemon or small children. He couldn't call himself an expert by any means, but he wasn't clueless. Towering over two tiny pokemon would just invite them to scatter, their play or argument interrupted by his clumsiness.
Buddy noticed what he was doing and hunkered down to watch for a little while too before decided she was bored. Clearly they needed friendship advice! And she was just the pokemon for the job! With a little cheer, she approached as friendly and unaggressive as possible.
"Hello, friends! What are you arguing about? Can I help? Is it about this?" she used a vine to pick up the toy they were bickering over and squeaked it. "Oh, this is neat! I like finding cool stuff too. I find lots of cool stuff while traveling with my trainer! Like the best sticks with pretty flowers! Have you ever found a pretty stick before? I met a rockruff once would really wanted to find a bone to show off to his trainer. Bones seem kinda gross to me, but they made him happy."
She paused to actually breathe.
"Um, so, yeah. I'd be happy to help? Or, I dunno...maybe we could all be friends! Sharing is the best, so maybe you two could like agree on a schedule to share this neat toy." Buddy squeaked it again, hoping that her new 'friends' wouldn't scatter right away despite her bumbling attempts at diplomacy. If they scattered, it would...be disheartening, but she supposed that it might be a little easier to catch the skitty than the tailow in an event of them bolting.
That way, at the very least, one of them could have the toy and Buddy wouldn't be left there, without a new friend, holding the thing the pair were arguing over.
In fact...she veryyyyyy carefully tried to sneak a vine behind the skitty and tailow, as if to try to catch one of them. It was a bit of a dirty trick but...well...Buddy had maybe learned one or two...And if that failed, she could totally tackle one of them to stop them from fleeing! Probably the skitty given that, y'know...the tailow had wings and could fly. And could probably peck really, really hard.
Okay, yeah. She would tackle the skitty if the pokemon bolted. That way she wouldn't invite an angry bird to be even more angry.
Adrian scratched his head as he watched Buddy work her 'magic'. He wondered if her cheerful approach would end quietly, of if the bird would swoop down to attack her...or the kitten would swipe the toy to bolt. His starter was a very hopeful, optimistic pokemon. He'd hate to see her heart broken, but he had reason to doubt two wild pokemon would just sit there and play nice without getting a skittish and running.

Taillow didn’t really like Skitty hogging the toy for itself. They fought against each other as the bird pecked at Skitty’s head and fluffed up its feathers to look larger than it was. It managed to knock it away for a split second, only to have the furry feline pounce on top of the bird angrily. “Hey, stop that! It’s mine!” Skitty meowed angrily. “No, it’s mine! There might be a berry inside! Who knows!?” The bird argued back, rolling around and kicking the cat off its body with its sharp talons. Skitty licked the scratches Taillow left on its arm and curled around to face off with Taillow with a loud hiss. “It doesn’t and it’s not yours!” Skitty defended. When it saw the human approaching like he was trying to avoid a low hanging branch, it stretched out its wings in alarm and swooped up into a nearby tree. It tried to grasp the toy with its sharp talons but missed. “It’s an ambush! Hide!” It squeaked, but immediately abandoned its tree to swoop low around Buddy’s head with its sharp talons stretched out menacingly. “Hey no, wait! Give that back, it’s mine! All mine!” It released a god awful sharp shrill that could pierce anyone’s ears no matter what brand of earplugs you invested in. Skitty tilted its head to the bird it had been fighting and back to Adrian and his Bulbasaur. Why was a plant getting involved with their beef? “I can’t share my toy!” The feline, who really looked like it belonged as someone’s pet and not so much as a wild Pokemon, meowed. It lunged at Buddy’s vines with its claws outstretched wide, swiping with just enough effort to try and swat the toy back out of Buddy’s vines so that it could grab it and run off with it in a hurry. “I found it. It’s mine! Give it back!” It lamented loudly. “Who cares about a Rockruff, the toy is mine!” Skitty argued firmly. Whelp.
Diplomacy had failed miserably.
Buddy was suddenly facing down two pokemon all by herself and Adrian was having a terrible memory of when she stood against a houndour and spinarak alone. They would not have a repeat of that event today. He reached to his side and pulled out a pokeball, expanding it in his hand.
"Use tackle on the bird," he told Buddy as he tossed the ball. "Sarge, use bite on the bird too." He really didn't worry about the skitty doing any damage to Buddy. It was a skitty. A tiny pinky kitten who had the look of some lady's pet more than of some kind of fierce foe they had to watch out for. So he focused on the bird who could probably do some major damage to Buddy with just a hit or two.
His pokemon were quick to react to their given commands. Buddy charged the bird alongside Sarge.
He had been tempted to tell Buddy to use razor leaf, but he knew the keen edges of those leaves hit harder than some other moves did more often, and he was pretty sure he read up somewhere that the scattered leaves could possibly hit everything in the vicinity, including allies. He didn't exactly need Sarge knocked out by a stray leaf hitting him too hard and opening up Buddy to excessive danger.
As he focused on the fight, he was idly aware of one of the eggs in his bag becoming incredibly active. Wriggling harder and harder. As if excited. Which was surely ridiculous. It couldn't possibly be so close to hatching that it'd hatch now of all times...would it? Of course, as if to prove him wrong, there was a loud CRACK and a flash of light. Adrian yelped as he tore his eyes from the fight to pull off his bag, fumbling to keep it under the umbrella.
He glanced over at the four pokemon battling in the street and then back down as he struggled to unzip his backback. Maybe Flicker was doing something odd in there? "What's going...on?" His words trailed off as an adorable little face poked out of his backpack. Um. "Uh...hello there?" It squeaked at him, before shimming out of the bag and...oh...rolling into the rain. Eager. Happy.
The baby water-type found the closest puddle and promptly rolled around in it before basking in the cooling spray.
"...Huh. Well...Looks like you're healthy, little one." Adrian murmured as he took out his pokedex to point it at the speal. "Still...Elm said there was something odd about you. But I don't see anything abnormal." Except that moveset, but Elm already mentioned it had egg moves. What a strange turn of events. "You, um, don't go too far, okay? Stay right there."
And back to the battle he looked to see how it was all playing out.

The two Pokemon remained focused on Buddy even as Sarge appeared. Buddy was the one that stole their toy away from them in the pouring rain, after all. Sergeant had yet to cause them any harm, though neither of the two could truly know what Adrian and his team had up their sleeves. Taillow swooped up high into the air, then spun around dramatically, just to dive back towards the earth. It’s sharp charcoal eyes remained steadfast and glued on the small bulbous plant. It knew how easily it could thwart plants by its many skirmishes with the wild Hoppip who rarely blew into the city streets from the nearby route when the weather got too rough. “I’ll show you to steal away my tasty!” Taillow landed on top of Buddy’s bulb and dug its sharp talons into the soft bud. It would peck at her relentlessly, landing many sharp scores across the top of her head. Buddy would inevitably thrash about as she knocked the Pokemon off and then slammed into Taillow with all of her might, knocking the small bird off of her and into the nearby road, where a jeep blared its horns and slowed down to pass by Adrian and his wild Pokemon battles. Thankfully, it missed the rogue car altogether, hopping back onto the sidewalk and cleaning its feathers with loud huffs, trying to regain its strength. Sergeant slipped up behind and sunk his teeth into the bird as Skitty spun around and chased after Buddy. “You could just leave!” It cried, slamming into Buddy from the side. It would shake itself profusely, sending thick globs of water to spray in all directions in a vain attempt to shake the rain out of its fur. It wouldn’t help, however, as the downpour only added more rain and soaked Skitty further despites its best effort. “Fine, fine. I get it! I’ll leave! You win the tasty!” Taillow chirped loudly, stretching its wings wide, and soared far off into the distance. Skitty puffed up its cheeks as the last remaining Pokemon against Adrian’s. “No they won’t! That toy belongs to me!” It meowed bravely, not yet ready to give up. Of course both pokemon attacked Buddy. At least the little plant endured the pecks well and the two pokemon managed to chase off the rather problematic bird. All that left was the skitty. He...kinda felt bad at the thought of trying to knock it out. Especially since it just looked like a tiny little house pet that got lost and for some reason was willing to brawl over a squeaker toy.
"Buddy, use tackle."
He readied another pokeball as the bulbasaur splashed through puddles towards the skitty. In the corner of his eye, he watched the spheal pup roll about happily in a puddle, not straying very far, fortunately, as it played. As he prepared to throw said ball, he felt more violent rocking in his bag. Wha? Two in one day? Had the spheal hatching in some way triggered the other? He did get them nearly the exact same time, so maybe they just needed a similar amount of time to hatch? Regardless, he was once more fumbling about with his backpack to get it undone in time to see...
A cotton candy puffball. Swirlex.
Huh.
Well that was just as pink and cutesy as the skitty he was battling. It made a happy little noise. Licked his nose. Uh.
"Hi? You're..." Weird looking? Odd? "cute? I guess?" It cooed at him before snuggling back into his bag with the geodude egg and Flicker. Well. He supposed that was that. With a shrug of 'I will deal with this later', he zipped everything up, readied that pokeball again, and threw it.
Easiest thing to do would be to catch this skitty and hurry his way to Violet. He doubted too many people (or pokemon) were honestly out in this weather.

The small kitten backed up and sat down on the asphalt and stared at Sergeant and Buddy. Why were they being mean to it? “What do you even want with my toy?” It needed to be sweet and charming. Clearly, going headfirst into the fray with the intention of taking both of these strong Pokemon out wasn’t the best move that it had. So it needed to be crafty and cunning, working carefully so that it could lull one of them into a false sense of security…then SNAG it’s precious back before they could blink! “Wouldn’t it just be better if we all play together instead? I mean…do we always need to be hostile to one another and attack first? What does that ever prove?” Skitty meowed in its cutest voice EVER, something like this! Buddy rushed at the pink kitten from the side, ramming into Skitty and knocking it flat on the ground. Before the small kitten could even move, Sergeant rushed from the other side and rammed it with his head. It cried painfully, struggling to pick itself back up, slowly but surely. It’s health had been drained but it wasn’t beaten yet! Anger flickered behind Skitty’s large eyes momentarily, but it pushed that back in favor of diplomacy. “All I wanted was peace, you see. Peace for you and peace for me. A toy so bright and lovely. That I could play with for days on end, so the fun I had would never end!” It sung, lulling Sergeant into a deep sleep. When Adrian tossed the Poke Ball after the small kitty, it yowled loudly. With its hackles raised and tail held high like a banner, the pink cat spun around on its nimble feet and raced off as fast as it could. Oh no. Oh no, oh no, OH NOOO! It never imagined that someone would come by and try to swipe it off the face of the earth! What would they even do with Skitty? Make it sing and dance all the rest of its days?! Adrian nodded a little bit, umbrella slipping in his fingers when the cornered skitty began to sing. Oh. Oh my. That was...nice... Sarge also seemed to agree as, despite the pouring rain, he wobbled a bit and flopped into a puddle, sound asleep. The pokeball almost slipped from his grip but he managed to throw it and hit the fleeing skitty. There! The fight over the toy was done and over...
He moved to drowsily shake Sarge awake and check him over, and the pup righted soon enough with a little encouragement. Nobody was worse for wear, eh? Adrian returned Sarge and turned to Buddy, who had the toy in her vines again, looking it over introspectively.
"Wanna take that with us, bud? Make sure the skitty keeps the toy it defended?" Adrian asked with a smile.
Buddy looked up at him with a cheerful cry and handed over the toy. It squeaked as Adrian turned it over in his hand.
"You're real considerate, y'know that, yeah?" he said softly, crouching to pet the bulbasaur's head. His fond smile was paired with a sigh. "You're better than me about that honestly. I still forget some days how much you all depend on me to make the right choices. I know I don't always do so. It's tough but...I'm glad you're on this journey with me. Dunno if it'd be the same with you, supporting me along the way, through all the bumps and hurdles."
Buddy nuzzled his hand then suddenly, started to glow.
Adrian's eyes went wide. Wait. This—
"You're evolving."
His partner pokemon was evolving! He stood up and gave the bulbasaur a little space, fascinated as he watched her form shift and change. Her form became bigger, and bulkier. The bulb on her back grew and unfolded to reveal a bright bud that would one day unfurl to reveal a flower. And in the matter of a minute, the glow faded and in the place of where a familiar friend stood was an ivysuar.
"Bud?"
He knew sometimes pokemon's personalities changed when they evolved. Was his best friend still in there or was she...different?
Buddy blinked up at him before pushing up onto her back legs, beaming a big smile, "Saur!"
Adrian couldn't help but grin back. Yeah. That was Buddy. Same as before. Just a little differently shaped. She looked up at him then at the sky, basking in the pouring rain even as a low rumble of thunder encouraged everyone to get indoors.
"C'mon, bud, let's go. We should get out of this storm. Violet is just up the road."
No doubt they'd be back soon.
But for now...
Time to scoop a Spheal and hurry along onto the grassy route, splashing through puddles as they did so.
