Name: Ophira Levine
Age: 14
Gender: female
Trainer Type: For now, Ophira is classified as a Pokémon Trainer and Gym Challenger. She is interested in coordinating and Unovan theater performances as later prospects, but her goals right now are more battle-oriented.
Hometown: Castelia City, Unova
Appearance: Ophira stands at five feet and two inches tall with a slight frame, a notable feature being her broader than average shoulders. She has pale ivory skin which, instead of tanning, sunburns at the drop of a hat and spawns thousands of light freckles all over her face, arms, legs, and shoulders. Her hair, which falls to her mid-back and is a strawberry blond color—she swears it’s not ginger—is usually tied back in a neat high ponytail or bun, a habit left over from her long stint in ballet. Her eyes are somewhere in color between hazel and brown, and are unusually large and owlish. Her typical outfit consists of clothing in pastel colors, a lot of white and “Easter” tones, but is fairly casual despite the odd palette restriction. She likes to wear comfortable, reasonably athletic clothing, though she does add in her own little flairs such as her own modified embroideries and chaotic DIY projects. Her favorite jacket, which she wears most days, is a worn, oversized denim jacket with hand-stitched floral patterns over the entire fabric. It’s not the most fashionable thing, but it is unique to her. The one accessory she wears with every outfit is a small diamond pendant on a short, black cable string. The pendant is forged from a sheet of ancient metal believed to be shed by a Bronzong, and it was a gift from her mother before she left for Johto.
Personality: Ophira, though shaken by immense self-doubt and anxiety, is a genuinely kindhearted person who will go to great lengths to help those in need, even if it poses an inconvenience to herself. One of her greatest assets is that she does not procrastinate, whether it comes to helping others or doing something as simple as her evening chores. Whatever she says she will accomplish, she will either make good on or die trying, and she rarely gives anything but her full effort to any challenge she is faced with. However, this obsession with perfection often results in burnout when Ophira isn’t constantly taking measures to make sure it doesn’t get out of control. She also isn’t very well-versed in grounding techniques to cope when a situation goes awry.
Ophira is innately curious about the world around her, always seeking answers. She makes sure everyone around her is engaged, too—which is a polite way to say she doesn’t have a great grasp on etiquette and is prone to asking some very inappropriate and invasive questions. She always apologizes, or course, but that’s just one unfortunate side effect of her social ineptitude, not a standalone trait. Those who interact with her tend to find it a bit odd that she’s so bubbly and cheerful, yet struggles to work out a response to just about anything said to her. It takes time to get to know how to read Ophira, but it’s a worthwhile investment if you can put up with some awkward silence. Overall, Ophira is a quirky amalgamation of good intentions, rampant self-doubt, and the desire to better understand the world at large and her place within it.
History: Ophira has always led a relatively privileged life, born into the upper end of the middle class in a thriving Castelia City. Her parents—Maxwell Levine, an IPF officer, and Kristin Levine-Aubert, an enthusiastic archaeologist and historian—were consistently able to afford her basic needs and much more, such as ballet courses, private schooling up through the fifth grade, and an actual suburban house instead of the apartment blocks most Unovan City residents are able to live in. She had no siblings, but also not many friends, as her meticulous schedule demanded. She also did not have much time to connect with her parents, especially her mother, since their respective jobs had such temperamental time requirements. Ophira was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder, of a genetic cause, at the age of ten years old, but due to her outright refusal to take any medications, her mental health is an ongoing battle. Despite her gentle disposition, her social skills are genuinely terrible as a result of her lonely childhood and she has trouble regulating her emotions whenever something goes wrong.
Concerning Pokémon training, her decision to become a Trainer was less of a hard and fast choice, more a culmination of a lifelong partnership with the creatures she would later decide to compete with in battle. Like many budding trainers, Ophira was raised within a culture heavily influenced by the relationships between people and Pokémon. Watching televised Champion tournaments was a family tradition, Pokémon either assisted her with her chores or were the object of them, even her favorite bedtime stories as a child told of the grand adventures of a brave little Caterpie. Naturally, she developed an intense fascination and affinity for both battling as a sport and its Pokémon participants. Sharing a livelihood with the mysterious creatures also helped to acclimate her to them at an early age; her mother insisted it was necessary for her historical research to always open their doors to the Pokémon they currently lived alongside. Of course, she made up tons of ridiculous excuses to corroborate that statement, but who would really object to fostering an adorable baby Azurill from time to time?
Ophira also admired the dedication and quick thinking of the champion Trainers she constantly heard about on the radio. She had been exposed to that sort of grit from early on, listening to her father tell her gruesome (and more than likely embellished) tales from his career in the International Police Force about fighting Team Rocket’s reign of terror. She craved the connections, not only the sense of daring but the sense of duty, that come with establishing your name as a Pokémon Trainer—so, when the opportunity presented itself, she chomped at the bit to receive her first Pokémon from the laboratory in New Bark Town. Her mother and father, having picked up on her aspirations, had secretly been saving money for roughly a year to be able to afford a safe trip to the Kanto-Johto landmass from the family’s home in Unova. Initially, she stressed endlessly about things that could go wrong, being separated her parents, on and on and on, but with enough encouragement, she managed to squash her doubts for the time being and embark on the journey to Johto.
Goals: Aside from her more obvious goal of defeating all eight Johto Gyms and challenging the League, Ophira wants to experiment with her place in the world of Pokémon Training. She knows she wants to spend her life alongside Pokémon, but her many conflicting passions and flaws have led her to an uncertainty regarding what she truly wants to devote herself to. Ophira is not interested in research or filling out a Pokédex—some may be surprised to learn that a person as detail-oriented as Ophira prefers to focus on the less measurable aspects of Pokémon training, such as how the bond between Trainer and Pokémon affects the team’s strength in battle.
Other Info: Fun fact—Ophira’s close friends and loved ones call her “Opi/Opie” as a nickname.
