So this was the gym?
He arrived in Violet the previous day and wandered for a bit, orienting himself. Got to know the layout of the city and the sights offered. Then he bedded down for the night so that he would be refreshed for today's plan. That being challenging Falkner and walking away with his first badge. Armed with a pamphlet and his pokegear, he researched a little bit before bed what he was up against, and knew, walking in, that Buddy would be sitting out of this one.
Flying types were not ideal for the newly evolved ivysaur to face down. He'd probably only call her out if he was desperate. For now, he had a plan that involved fighting fliers...with fliers. Ever since he caught him, Barry had become an odd ace up the sleeve as it were. And Sarge was always ready for a good fight ever since he caught the pup in those darn, unmanageable hills. As for the rest of his team...well, Braum could probably help too, but it didn't hit very hard and was still pretty insecure in battle. And Flicker...he was still figuring her out. She seemed most content babysitting eggs in his backpack, incubating them so well that they hatched at an unexpected rate!
The last of said eggs was the geodude Professor Pokemon gave him. He felt it start to shift around last night, so he had hopes it would hatch soon too. After which, he really wasn't quite sure what he'd do. He had a fistful of baby pokemon that needed training as well as more gyms after Falker. His life suddenly felt quite...full. Enriched, perhaps, was a better word. It had felt so empty for so long that he forgot what it was like to be intensely busy but anticipatory for what the next day brought on.
He liked the feeling. He liked feeling...purposeful.
Adrian from a couple years ago would marvel at where he stood now, and he was just at the beginning of something bigger. Greater. More than himself. A life where he didn't mask his stress with cigarettes and other bad habits, and didn't risk brushes with the law. Far away dreams were suddenly so tangible.
He could do this. Feel this. Want this.
With his chin high, he entered the gym. He gazed around at the high ceilings and curious architecture. Perfect for flying pokemon to maneuver around their more ground bound foes. He moved to the reception desk and cleared his throat, nerves clutching tight around his throat. Not for the upcoming battle, no, the real challenge was facing this tiny little lady behind the counter who he needed to talk to in order to face said gym leader.
She smiled at him, "Hello, trainer! Are you here to challenge Falkner?"
Adrian nodded.
"Let me register you in our system. Physical trainer ID or your pokedex please?"
Adrian fumbled for a bit and ended up dumping his wallet and pokedex onto the counter with a bit of a clatter. Oops. He mumbled a quiet apology as he pulled out his ID as well as showed her his dex. There were forms to fill and all that. He'd stumble along the various steps, embarrassed at nervousness and lack of knowledge. There were probably literal ten year olds more prepared for this part of the challenge than him.
But he'd get it all sorted, as well as register which pokemon he wanted to use in the challenge.
"So...um...when's the next available opening?" Adrian asked when he was able to gather his belongings and stuff it all into his pockets. Buddy, who was, as always, not in her ball, leaned against his legs in reassurance. One day she'd be too big to do this. But for now, she was still 'cuddle her trainer to help him feel better' size. "Today or...?"

The receptionist was thorough with her job and polite. The soft smile that played on her lips never wavered, no matter how sweet or rude the individual on the other side of the counter was. She took their items, pressed a few keystrokes on her keypad, and entered them into their automated scheduler. All things considered, it was a rather smooth and simple process – sometimes made easy when they called ahead and prescheduled for an upcoming match upon their arrival in Violet. “Ah, Mr. Hartt, please bear with me, will you? The system can be a bit…trying sometimes when accessing…” The receptionist laughed softly, click-clacking away. Then as she checked the list of battlers already scheduled, she hummed softly underneath her breath. She’d click around, dragging and dropping unknown things within the scheduler as though it definitely took a lot of effort to get it all set up. “Ok! We definitely have an opening today…which is weird. Looks like a trainer who was supposed to arrive today couldn’t make it. Can you stay a bit or are you previously engaged with another event in the next couple of hours? Looks like Falkner will be available in….an hour and a half?” She’d gesture to the seats placed against the wall not that far from her, complete with a small coffee table in front of them and some refreshments on the side. “If not our next available appointment is…hm… two weeks from now? At five in the morning?” Who was up at that time? Well, Falkner was, but of course! He pulled long hours in the GYM especially during busy seasons such as the summer and autumn months, when it seemed like more kids than they could count were freshly turning ten and getting their first Pokemon to train. Assuming that Adrian had no problem with waiting, she’d turn and hurry up to make sure Falkner was made aware of the trainer changes in his upcoming match. A small boy who definitely couldn’t have been older than ten sat down and stared up at Adrian with wide, excited eyes. “Oh ohh ohhh! Heyy! Heyy! I’m Sebastian, who are you? Are you here to challenge Falkner?! Me too!” He’d speak – a little too excitedly and too fast, barely giving Adrian a chance to respond. “I got Bubbles from Professor Elm and we’ve trained super, duper hard on the way here! Bubbles gunna KAPOW him with some really fast water moves and WOOSH him with his speedy spinning tackle for sure!” He laughed cheerfully. He was the picture of what you’d think a kid challenging someone to a fight would be – way over confident and possibly unprepared. “Sebastian?” A young man with striking blue hair walked to the waiting area and greeted Sebastian with a wide, warm smile. “Are you ready for our battle? I’m excited to see what your Pokemon can do.” He smiled while gesturing to two large doors that led out towards the battleground. Sebastian would follow Falkner excitedly, chattering away his nonsense of how hard he’s worked and how sure he was that he could defeat him…. ….and after short while, Sebastian would come storming back through the doors with tears streaming down his face. “How could I lose?! We trained so hard!! It’s not fair!!” And back out the front doors onto the streets of Violet once more. Falkner would then approach Adrian with the same basic speech, a bit more matured though. “It’s Adrian, right? I’m Falkner and I heard you’re looking to battle me for an official GYM Badge. If you’ll follow me, I’m excited for our match up.” He’d lead Adrian through those same big doors, out to a large battlefield with high roofs that were more than enough room for his birds to fly around. Falkner held one arm up and whistled loudly, getting the attention of one of the Pidgey above who flew down and landed on his arm with a soft chirp. “I’ll be starting with my Pidgey, Beaks.” Falkner added with a smile. Falkner accept's Adrian's challenge! He'll send out his Level 10 Beaks. Who will Adrian send out? Adding words to egg!

Adrian nodded. He could wait a couple hours if need be. He did show up unannounced after all. Though he did note to schedule ahead for his next gym battle so he didn't have to sit awkwardly in the lobby next to a mob of excited middle schoolers. Okay, it was just the one, but the kid was like a whole classroom on a sugar rush all by himself as he babbled about his Bubbles and how he'd beat the gym leader for sure. And while it was possible the kid had a very well-trained squirtle, the lack of mentioned other pokemon made him a little...dubious that he had anything else as back up if things went awry.
But he kept bobbing his head. Yep. Uh huh. Interesting. Cool.
Buddy at least looked cheerful and attentive as she sat on the floor in front of them both, big-eyed and responding to his excitement with cries of enthusiasm of her own.
Eventually, when Adrian was ready to nod off, someone came out and called Sebastian's name. The overconfident kid hopped up and babbled at what was, he realized, the gym leader himself. Falkner. Adrian watched and listened attentively before they both vanished behind the doors. The guy seemed...cool. Seemed to be able to handle the kid and his enthusiasm with stride, which was neat to see. Him being a standoffish jerk to the little kids who no doubt challenged him endlessly all day would be a bit off-putting.
Adrian found himself smiling, just a little, before settling back to wait his turn. He pulled out his PokeGear to browse the local news for a bit and checked on his wriggly geodude egg to make sure it wasn't hatching on him while he was waiting. But before he knew it, the kid was, expectedly, exiting the arena upset and blubbering about how hard he worked and how he couldn't believe he lost.
Then, his own name was called.
He jerked his gaze from the doors the kid ran through up to Falkner, who appeared to be watching him back expectantly. Adrian nodded and stood, pulling his bag back on. He could feel Flicker's warmth emanating through it and soaking his shoulders with her radiant heat. He noted the change in Falker's phrasing, posture and tone: code switching in recognition that his current challenger was an adult rather than a child. A professional indeed.
Adrian followed Falkner slowly through those doors and looked around at the impressively high ceilings. Perfect for flying types. In fact, he was pretty sure he spotted a few high in the rafters. He couldn't quite tell what they all were, but he was pretty certain that there were a few very familiar birds that he grew up seeing in Kanto. As the doors shut behind them, Falkner whistled to summon his first pokemon: a pidgey. Well. This would be interesting.
Despite Buddy following him around, out of her ball, he had no plans of sending her against this foe.
Instead, he pulled out a pokeball.
It was time for a mirror match.
"I will be using Barry today," Adrian said in a quiet, but firm voice, confident that his pidgey's little trick would surprise Falkner some. Everybody he battle so far had been thrown off by the little bird's special skill. He breathed in slow and deep, before cocking back his arm and throwing the ball high in to the air to start the battle. "Barry, use Uproar!"
In a flash of light, the pidgey emerged from the pokeball, near twin to Falkner's own tiny bird. Except where his was obedient and calm, Barry was...well...LOUD. With glorious, audacious ENTHUSIASM, Barry began to screech his birdie beak off in a tantrum fit to bring the roof down. He swooped down to harass his fellow pidgey and would chase Beaks wherever they flew, wings flapping and clawed feet scratching. It would be a little while before Barry's Uproar would end.

Falkner watched the young man carefully as they walked onto the gymnasium floor and took their stance at the opposite side of the match. Adrian was quiet and reserved. Individuals such as himself were not unheard of within the GYM Leader’s walls and they often packed untold mysteries with their discretionary battling manners. “Barry looks very healthy for a Pidgey. I think he may be close to evolving, soon.” Falkner praised Adrian as he turned to the trainer’s own Pidgey that had been summoned out of its ball. “The flight feathers are larger than normal and his tailfeathers seem to be shining with a bit more color than the average Pidgey.” Falkner continue, unprompted, pointing out some of the telltale signs most missed when a Pidgey was closing in on their next evolutionary stage. “Beaks, let’s try something, shall we? It’s a risk.” Falkner admitted with a nod of his head. Most of his Pidgey were well versed on their sharp eyes that could see keenly through nearly anything. Accuracy was the name of the game when you’re a bird soaring high above everything else. You needed to be positive that the bug you saw wriggling in the grass was actually a bug and not a blade of grass. But still…was Barry one of the Pidgey with keen eyes that could pierce through the veil, or one of the rare Pidgey Falkner had flying around his rooftops with tangled feet that seemed to so easily ensnare in anything? “Use Sand Attack!”The birds danced in their own ways on the battlefield. As Barry threw a literal tantrum, screaming and squawking as though he’d been mortally wounded, Beaks soared above him in long circles. He searched the grounds, lowering himself carefully to the ground to swipe the air above it with his wings until he’d managed to sweep up every bit of debris on the gymnasium floor into a large, sandy pile. Barry hopped on Beaks as soon as the other bird’s guard was down and thrashed at his opponent mercilessly with his wings and sharp talons, ripping small feathers out of the other bird’s sides and back and sending them flying all around them. Beaks swept the large pile of debris up with his wings in retaliation and sent them flying into Barry’s eyes, nearly blinding him for a second. As Barry backed off, using his wings to try and rid the gritty sands from his eyes, Beaks swooped back up high above him and circled once more. “That’s an impressive move. Not many Pidgey know it.” Falkner hummed in approval. An exciting twist he didn’t readily expect from Barry. “Do you have any long term goals? After this gym battle?” Falkner pressed on thoughtfully, trying to learn more about the man before him. Beaks swooped again, landing on the ground once more. Falkner raised his hand and shook his head quickly. “Beaks, we need to change up our game with Beaks while we have the chance.” His bird was severely hurt. It labored with its breathing as the pain ached through its body. “Use Tackle, and quickly please.”The ensuing Uproar took its toll when it knocked out Beaks, whose attempt at blinding his opponent so that his attack would not land had failed. Falkner recalled his bird with a click of a button on its Poke Ball and whistled to the rafters above their heads. Several birds peered over the edge and glanced between each other. Then, one brave bird of prey stretched out its large wings and soared down to land on his trainer’s arm, though he might have looked a bird large to do so. “I suppose it’s up to you now, Wings. I’m putting my trust in you that you’ll show our opponent a good match.” Wings turned with sharp eyes that seemed to pierce through your soul. Wings raised his wings, which seemed to stretch far and wide at his sides, and screeched cheerfully. “Will do.”Wild Encounter Weather: Inside [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Beaks ♂ LV 10 HP 0% [0/31]

Adrian watched the birds in flight, listening to Falker's observations about his pidgey. Were his feathers truly looking longer? Was his tail a little more colorful? Was...his first ever caught pokemon ready to evolve soon? Such a funny thought. It...actually made something in his chest twist a little and his breath catch as he tracked the bird's flight. Buddy's evolution had been emotional as well, but hearing Falkner speak made him feel a certain swell of pride in himself. That he was doing okay despite his mistakes—a pokemon who had not trusted him at first and was so angry all the time when he caught him, was now close to evolution. How could he not be proud?
Breathing in, he tried to hide the tension that gripped him as sand was thrown in Barry's face. C'mon, bud. You can do this...
His attention was drawn away by Falkner praising Barry, and then asking Adrian about his long term goals.
"Oh, uh...Gonna...beat all the gyms," he said awkwardly, shifting a bit. He opened his mouth to continue when there was a bright light in his backpack and the sound of a cracking shell. Adrian yelped, startled as Flickered emerged to float in front of his face. Uh. Hell—OH! WHY WAS HIS BAG SUDDEN SO HEAVY! IT WAS LIKE THERE WAS A LITERAL HUNK OF ROCK IN IT! Adrian's eyes went wide as he staggered a bit and pulled off his backpack. It unfortunately hit the ground with a loud THUNK and he ended up swearing and apologizing as he unzipped the bag.
Out floated a baby geodude who seemed utterly unbothered by being dropped five seconds after being born.
Adrian blinked and laughed a little, shaking his head, "Heh." He watched as the sentient rock floated up and around him like a moon in orbit. Falkner would see a smile crack on his face. "...And...I am going to become a world class pokemon breeder... I have a property and everything to get started. Just...need a license."
He laid gentle hand on the geodude as he returned his attention to the battle, chin up, "Which I will get when I'm done winning this battle." At that, Beaks fell to the squawks of terror that left Barry's maw.
As Falkner sent out his next pokemon, Wings, Adrian expected Barry to get keep making noise as always. Unchanging. But Barry had other plans. He flew higher into the rafters before arcing down into a nosedive of terror, his whole body aglow as he swelled with energy and vitality. His shape shifted and blurred and suddenly, from the light broke forth a pidgeotto!
The mirror match would continue.
Barry was ready to keep up the good fight, not even losing a single wingbeat worth of stride to evolution or the sand he got to his eyes.
"You can do it!"

Falkner watched Barry evolved with admiration sparkling in his eyes. It was a beautiful thing to witness. Every time one of his birds evolved, Falkner did everything he could to ensure that he was there for them. Sometimes, the newfound body and excess of power seemed to be a lot for some birds to handle, especially birds like his Wings who evolved a tad earlier than expected or known by traditional means. But love and careful training helped them ensure that they rose to their potential. “That’s simply amazing! Look at your new bird now, Adrian! How do you feel, seeing all your hard work and training with Barry pay off in this way?” Falkner asked Adrian genuinely curious. Still, they had a battle to manage and given the fact that Adrian chose to face Falkner with the same species of Pokemon that he himself owned, it left him with only a few options as they battle waged on. It was risky. Wings’ best held secret needed the right moment and time for Wings to use it properly. “Take on all the gyms?” Barry struggled with the sands that Beaks spread but still managed to cut through the veil to find his mark on his opponent. Should Falkner waste another opportunity to strike to make it even harder for Barry to find Wings in the heat of battle? Or would it be better to go on the offensive first, and cause as much damage with the hope of a chance that the sands from earlier would eventually do their part? “That means you’ll be facing Bugsy next. Then Whitney. She’s definitely not an easy opponent to take on lightly.” Falkner laughed. Wings swooped up high into the air, only to be chased by his opponent. “Wings, use Gust attack! Try to get low to the ground, in case there’s any sand left from Beaks’ earlier attack to aid you now!” Falkner called out with a sharp whistle. The colorful osprey gave a sharp shrill, then dived towards the gymnasium floor before. As Barry followed, landing on the ground with a raucous uproar to shake the ground itself, Wings would kick up a small tornado of winds that spiraled around and slammed into Barry’s side and ripped at his newly evolved feathers. “Your Barry is something else.” Falkner frowned to himself, reconsidering the fact that maybe Barry had keen sight like any other bird and he’d wasted the first moment by focusing on tossing sand everywhere. "I feel..." Adrian's breath caught for a moment as he watched the battle play out. "...heh. I'm proud of us. Despite everything, here we are." Here was Barry flying high and fast, newly evolved and chasing down his foe with stubborn determination. He didn't have the keenest sight that was impossible to make falter, but in this moment, this battle, it sure seemed like it. Maybe it was sheer anger and stubborn audacity that drove him, but whatever it was, Barry was flying high and shining bright.
"We'll take them all down. Maybe not in a mirror match like this but..." Adrian found a burning ember of confidence just watching his pokemon strive to be the best. He caught up with Wing and assailed him with scratches and screeching before getting knocked back with a solid gust. Barry tumbled a bit, his Uproar at last at an end, and chirped at his fellow bird with pride. "I know he is somethin' else. He's always had spirit."
Adrian widened his stance, "Let's end this. Barry, Uproar again!"
He watched as his newly evolved bird tried to shake the grit from his eyes one last time before renewing his chase. He flew faster and more agile than before, and he the Uproar he raised was louder. Time to bring the roof down and this battle down with it.

Wings landed on the ground while breathing heavily with a raised eye in Falkner’s direction. Falkner understood the look all too well. Barry was strong and capable, a possible threat to their strategy if Falkner didn’t focus on his bird’s health first and foremost. “Wings land and use Roost!” Falkner called out urgently, with hope that his Pokemon would regain his strength to recoup so that they could plan for a better attack. If Wings wasn’t quick about it, though, he wouldn’t be able to last past another round. Barry kicked up a loud raucous sound, kicking his sharp talons about while beating his wings wildly in the air. As Falkner kept his eyes glued to the battle, bated breath in anticipation of which direction the battle may go, he listened to Adrian carefully. A sense of pride swelled in Falkner’s chest as he recalled watching one of his birds evolve and he understood what Adrian meant all too well. “It’s one of the best feelings in the world, isn’t it? Knowing that you’ve helped them accomplish something so…simply amazing? You’ll go even farther, I’m sure.” Falkner seemed to promise Adrian as Barry seemed to only cause an uproar for himself and no one else. Meanwhile, Wings managed to land a safe ways away and began preening himself. He pulled at the damaged feathers on his body and spat them out around him so that his body could heal and recuperate. He felt much better as he rested, allowing himself the time to truly relax and heal. It may not have healed Wings fully, but it allowed him to regain a great deal of strength, nonetheless. “Oh…hmm. So your Barry does seem to have pretty tangled feet instead, huh?” Perhaps that’s where this raucous attitude came from? Adrian about swore when that accuracy drop came fully into play at last. Their luck ran out right at a pivotal moment where the fight would have ended. He clenched his fists and breathed through the surprise. They still had this. Wings roosted and put them back at square one, but they'd be able to end this soon. Right? It was just a little set back. They had this handled!
Especially since Barry looked utterly unfazed by missing his foe and kept screeching away.
Adrian grimaced and ran a hand through his hair, "Yeah...he does...was hoping you'd not notice that actually. But sure, he might not have keen eyes, he's a real master at handling confusion! That won't trip him up like it would a bird with perfect vision." And there were loads of annoying confusion tactics out there used by pokemon like zubat or wingull. He just happened to keep running into fights where keen vision probably would have served him better.
"I'm still confident in Barry," he declared. Victory was delayed, not denied. And he also couldn't recall Barry while he was in an uproar, so until he calmed down he just had to have faith the pidgeotto had this covered for the time being. Adrian did have other pokemon in the back, but he wanted to give Barry a chance to shine in this mirror match. "C'mon, bud, put your all into it! WIngs is all healed up now."
He watched Barry wheel around, swooping down to bring his uproar to the roosting Wings. Hopefully his trajectory was on target again...

"Your Barry is a Pidgey. I train with many Pidgeys so I can see what they're like from a mile away. Had the Tangled Feet helped you so far?" Falkner grinned, flexing his expertise in avian Pokemon, especially the Pidgey line. "It's great that you believe in the power of your Pokemon, I can see that the bond of your friendship through this battle so far." He folded his arm, and lightly nodded like an approving father. He wasn't surprised at the trainer using Uproar again in the fight, and decided to maybe switch up his tactic again, even though it was tempting to throw more sand at the newly evolved Pidgeotto. "Pidgeotto, use Gust again!" He finally gave his order. Barry got close enough to Wings and unleashed his screeching rendition of "Wake Me Up". Falkner's Pidgeotto had to cover its ears for a bit before flying back up and blew a quick force of wind with its powerful flaps. The two birds were worn down, and depending on Barry's luck, the victor could soon be decided. "Not in a major fight yet," Adrian admitted when asked if the tangled feet had benefitted him. "But I'm sure it will one day! Lots of moves can cause confusion and I'll be able to trust Barry with those situations." Firm. certain. Barry's uproar would continue. "WIngs is looking tired again, Barry, keep it up!"
The screeching pidgeotto wheeled around again, even as he was buffeted by those strong gusts of wind. They could do this! Just had to endure a little longer.
"I...Yeah...we are friends now, aren't we, Barry?" Despite everything. "Let's do it this time. Finish this battle up, bud!" Adrian was getting excited now. His stance was wide and he pumped a fist in the air, trying to hype them both up. Come on! Don't miss. Don't miss! They had this in the bag if Barry could land one more hit, he was sure of it.
Barry inhaled deeply and continued his barrage of screeching, angling once more to peck and scratch and wail at Wings. Could he entangle them and secure victory or would that one bit of sand steal victory from his talons again?
Sure, Adrian had pokemon in the back, but this was Barry's fight. He didn't want to switch. Not when this felt...right.

Falkner nodded his head as he listened to Adrian. He placed one hand on his chin and scratched it idly in deep thought. While some of his birds contained the strange, tangled feet, he’d always stuck with his Keen Eye buddies in the heat of GYM matches due to the advantages they provided in such matches. “When that time comes, I’m sure Barry will rise up and make every use of his ability.” Falkner agreed with a wide smile. Seeing how well Adrian worked with his raucous bird filled Falkner’s heart with delight. He was quite a skilled trainer, though he was just starting out. Even though they may still have much more to learn along the way, Falkner was confident that Adrian had what it took to lead his team successfully. “Wings you need to land and use Roost again!” Falkner snapped his fingers as he called out to his large osprey who swooped down low through the gym, preparing to land on the gymnasium floor. Barry was quick, though, and descended upon Wings in an instance. With a flurry if kicks and pecks, Barry tore at Wings’ feathery body mercilessly as he screamed and wailed in Wings’ ears. Wings eventually broke free and swooped over to Falkner’s side, tired and defeated from the strenuous fight. “Wings, look at you.” Falkner spoke softly to his bird, reaching into his pocket to pull out the bird’s official Poke Ball and recall it with a click of a button. “Please rest, my dear friend. You’ve deserved it.”Falkner would then stroll across the long tiled gymnasium floor to Adrian. He extended one hand to the other trainer to shake Adrian’s hand politely, before pulling out a couple of items to present to Adrian officially. “I’ve admired the skill and prowess you’ve shown with your teammate in the heat of our match. This is the Technical Machine Roost. It will allow any Pokemon capable of learning it the freedom to be able to land and rest, healing their health in exchange. But it also grounds them, temporarily removing their Flying typing during the time they’re roosting.” Falkner warned. “And this is my official GYM Badge. It is proof that you have faced me in a proper battle and won. Also here, your winnings for defeating me as well.” Falkner added, pulling out some change for Adrian and handing it over.

As suddenly as it began...it was all over.
Adrian let out a sharp exhale of relief and maybe a little surprise. He...he did it. He won. HE WON!
"Barry. Barry we did it! Ha." He beamed a rare grin for his partner as the bird calmed his riot to fly a lazy circle around Adrian. The often reserved young man reached up and brushed his hand against Barry's side as he passed and then held up an arm like Falkner did for Wings. Barry landed into a flew lazy flaps and chirped at him. "You were awesome out there."
He pulled out a handkerchief and helped clean his partner's eyes out, "There, now you can see better."
Barry crooned happily and adjusted himself, preening at the praise and attention. Yeah. Yeah he did do good. Tell him all about how good he was in that fight. He showed that other bird who was the best and strongest! Solo'd this trial all by himself. He was allowed to be smug about it.
Adrian snapped back to reality as Falkner approached, his smile falling to familiar reservation. But there was a joyous gleam in his dark eyes as he nodded to the gym leader and took his hand to shake. Grip firm. Then, he took the badge and prizes with mild awe and fascination.
"What do you think, bud?" he showed Barry the badge. The bird, more interested in shiny than what it meant, pecked it. Adrian snorted as he pinned it to the inside of his jacket. "Yeah, yeah. Probably shouldn't eat that." Barry got a fond pet.
Then, he drew in a deep breath, "Thank you sir for this opportunity. And for helping me see my bond with Barry in a new light that I hadn't before." With that, he took his team out of the gym and into the daylight. No doubt more kids would rush past, eager to get their to appointments.
"We did it..."
