An innocent stroll in the dark [Hills] (Hold)

What an interesting...place. The Mizuma Institute was quite the impressive academic and research facility. There were rare pokemon within sight of the building, a reservation of sorts where the students could study the wildlife. It was very...quaint. But he couldn't be satisfied by just watching in the observatory, no, he had...other aims. Namely, he needed to see if there were any weaknesses into those reserves through this strange, hilly forest full of tangled up trees. 

With his pilfered pokemon at his side, tucked away into pokeballs for now, he wandered about, searching. Curious. Plotting. Of course, he might look a little odd out here in his suit, but Silas just couldn't bear dress like some commoner unless he had to do so. It wasn't as if it was a crime to 'hunt for pokemon' on this estate, nor was it a crime to do so it a suit. He would just have to make sure that if he ran into anyone, he laid out the charm and smiled real nice like a gentleman who was a little lost but with nothing but the purest intentions.

Though, he did wish that recovering from his fall from grace involved less...well...dirt. And muck. And wandering in nature. He belonged in a penthouse suite or behind a desk in private office, not trudging around in the wilds. But, alas, he'd need to do some grubby blue-collared work if he was going to get back on top.

Now let's see...

Where or where was that reservation border? Here?

He pushed aside a branch and sighed. Nope. he must have wandered too deep into the hills before tracking back. Surely he'd find his destination in all due time. And when that happened, he would pilfer a rare pokemon to add to his collection. Since SOMEBODY had better security on the pokemon they had in the shop that the casual punk kid did on his PC.

One thing that was in abundance around Mizuma Estates would be guards and police officers. They were friendly and polite, waving to the newcomers that wandered through the area with ease. Their sharp eyes didn’t miss a beat, and while some were literally toting out criminals who tried to break in (and failed) in handcuffs all but kicking them to their cop cars, others would stop younger scholars in their tracks and warn them about the ample amount of jail time that their crimes would cost them. Years. Years without the hope of parole. That was usually enough of a scare to set them straight, to be sure.

When Sila wandered in without raising any alarms, a few would wave to him with a friendly smile. “Careful!” One guard jogged all the way to Silas and pointed to the thick brush and tall trees that surrounded the hillside. “Pokemon there are mean. They’re as wild as you can get, and we may not be able to find you in time if you get hurt.” The guard explained, placing his hands idly at his sides after gesturing to the wild hills nearby. Though he did give Silas a bit of a strange look – who dresses like that when searching through thick wilderness anyways – he wouldn’t harass the man without a good enough reason to.

Though, if Silas had hoped to find a way around to the back of the preserve, he would notice something else slither up in front of his path as he was pushing his way through wild brush and brambly branches whose overgrown branches only reached out to try and ensnare the man in their grasp. A wild snake leaped out from the top of a tree branch and landed on top of Silas’ head, rattling its tail in alarm as it struck out at the human, trying to bite him with its sharp fangs. Though it would miss in its haste, if Silas didn’t react quick enough, it was only a matter of time before he would be bitten by the wild creature.

Silas would smile and cheerfully wave back to the guards, noting their faces and trying to get a sense of parole schedules before he entered the woods. Recon might end up being the only thing achieved today in these woods of supposedly mean pokemon that would be out to get him. He wasn't scared. He could handle whatever was thrown at him.

However, he didn't appreciate that fate decided to throw a literal snake onto his head. 

He managed to wrench the snake off and take a step back before he was bitten, eyes narrowed as he appraised his situation. If he didn't do something now, he was likely to be attacked again by a hungry pokemon with a venomous bite, so standing his ground was the only option.

"Aqua, handle this," he declared, throwing out a pokeball. The squirtle emerged with a little cry. "Use water gun."

Aqua shivered at the sight of the snake, but would obey, squirting water at the snake as he was told to do. But unfortunately, his trainer wasn't feeling especially patient today. 

"...I forgot you're still quite weak," Silas muttered. "Nevermind, Aqua. I believe it will be faster to just catch this obstruction and be done with it." Into the PC it could go like the sentret until he could find a snot-nosed brat to trade something worthwhile for it. With that in mind, he expanded a pokeball and threw it, aiming to bounce the ball off the ekans. He thought his aim looked straight and true as the capsule made its arc.

Seems like someone was very confident that he'd catch the ekans that he thought so little of.

Aqua was a little...taken aback. This was the second time he was just to stand back and not get in the way. He wanted to be helpful. To prove himself! He was strong too, just like Silas' other pokemon!

With a grunt of annoyance, the sassy squirtle spat water onto Silas' shoes, soaking them and the cuffs of his pants.

"Was that necessary?" Silas snarked. 

Aqua propped his hands on his sides and mimicked him.

"Hmph. You're lucky you're rare and I know one day you will be powerful enough. At least moreso than some of the pokemon in my party currently...who are...satisfactory for now." Silas huffed as he looked up to see if the snake was captured by the pokeball he threw.

SPLAT!

Ekans tumbled to the ground with a loud thump. It immediately coiled its body up underneath itself while narrowing its eyes on these intruders. They were lurking in its territory. They were enemies or prey and needed to be dealt with immediately. It’s head spun as the world seemed to blend together and its head throbbed. As it slowly recollected itself, Aqua slammed it with a large blast of water that sent it tumbling through the weeds temporarily.

THAT WAS IT!

Ekans launched itself from the grass and slammed into Aqua’s side, immediately coiling itself around the small blue turtle. Thick bands of coils slithered around Aqua’s midsection and bound his feet together, with two thick coils tethering his hands to his side. Ekans raised its head up high with a wide smile as it stared down at the prey it managed to successfully snag inside of it’s coils.

FOOD!

Saliva dripped from Ekans’ lips as it parted them and opened its mouth wide. Aqua’s head was so close to those two sharp fangs Ekans unfolded from the roof of its mouth. It could already imagine how good the small blue squirrel-tailed turtle would taste, sliding down into the deep depths of its belly. Then something snapped it up in the blink of a bright red light, causing it to disappear in an instance. What?! It had been captured, before Ekans even had time to make rhyme or reason of the whole ordeal.

Aqua was 'rescued' from the jaws of the hungry, hungry snake that coiled around him by the pokeball snagging the ekans up in an instant. The battle was over faster than a blink, leaving Aqua staring at the ground where the ball rested before it, nestled in a patch of fallen leaves. Silas moved forward and picked up the ball, pocketing it like one might a gum wrapper they found on the sidewalk and planned to toss in the bin later.

It wasn't deemed useful.

Useless pokemon were made to disappear like the sentret Silas caught before.

Aqua wondered how long it would be until he would be discarded as well, or if he could preserve himself somehow...some way. He...he didn't want to be 'put away' or 'left behind'. 

"Let's go," Silas said, holding up Aqua's pokeball. "It's time to get a move on." The squirtle stared for a moment and curled his little hands into determined fists. He would prove himself! He would be useful. In a flash, the little turtle vanished too and Silas continued his trek to try to find a way into the reserve. Even if it meant wandering for a while in this incessantly overgrown tangle of a woodland. 

Honestly, this close to the institute, surely someone would have had the foresight to at least TRY to tame the underbrush here. Even if they wanted to leave it wild deeper in. ALAS, it was not, so he was stuck awkwardly high stepping over logs and ducking under branches and shoving through denser patches.

He wondered if these stupid woods would eventually become non-traversable.

Wouldn't that be peachy?

Maybe he could just set some of these bushes on fire to make more room...

With thoughts of arson swirling through his head, Silas continued his journey to try to find a way into the reserve that wouldn't be caught by those nosy guards. Fortunately, with his new disguise, nobody should suspect him of a thing except being an eccentric gent. Because obviously he was just that NORMAL and totally not slumming it as a blue-collar crook who had to get his hands dirty for a paycheck. No. Never. BLAH.

Posing as a trainer for now had the benefits of relative obscurity. Just one of a million. Somebody looking for a fresh start in a new region. There was a story like that every single day of the week.

There was a small trail that led around the back of the hillside towards the reserve. It was heavily wooded, with woody weeds and tall trees that blocked most of the passageway. It also attracted vermin and other creatures who could easily feast on the scraps of trash that some of the careless students who stayed within the dorms of the establishment might leave behind. Several furry purple bodies raced through the forest in front of Silas, darting through the grass with loud growls and hisses as though warning him not to follow them. They were evidently scared and only hoped that this strange man wouldn’t try to follow them.

One was stuck behind and immediately abandoned by its pack. It ran with them, only to run headfirst into the nearest wide oak tree. The small purple rodent jumped and arched its back. It fluffed up its fur and waved its tail high in the air like a banner, while folding its ears against its scalp. “Hey, you watch it there, bucko!” Rattata hissed at the tree, raising one paw to expose its sharp claw and slash across the rough bark. “That hurt! You need to move outta my way!” It snapped, and gnawed at the rough bark.

It would eventually turn on Silas. Whether because he would do something to make it have to notice him or not, Rattata spun around and spat out a mouthful of bark on the ground in front of the seasoned man, shaking its head and backing up against the bark of the ‘offending’ tree defensively. “I don’t want any trouble!” Rattata growled in a low rumble, warning Silas firmly. It was more than ready to teach him, too. Though, the only way forward seemed to be just past the Rattata and around the side of that tree…so…was there really a choice in ignoring it?

Silas stepped back as he was confronted by a startled rat. Hng. That reminded him of his own ratatta that needed some training to become more useful in the future. Choices, choices. Well. He didn't trust that little weakling to be able to take anything out on its own in a timely fashion, so Silas decided he'd at least soften it up so King could make the final blow. Assuming the one doing the softening didn't just knock it out first.

But who to choose, who to choose...

He pulled out a ball and tossed it, "Syn, show your worth. Use gust."

The Murkrow burst from the ball with a short cry. Oh. He knew these woods. These were very good woods. Woods where he nested and met the big shiny. But...where was big shiny? Where was the human that introduced him to big shiny?

Murkrow landed on a nearby branch and peered back at Silas curiously. CAW?

"You heard me, use gust," Silas commanded.

The murkrow clicked his beak and peered down with a cocked head at the rat. Well, maybe he would be given back his shiny if he used gust. With another caw, the crow swooped down and started to beat his wings into a miniature gale, trying to blow away the little purple rat, its poor pleas for mercy left unheard.

Seemed like trouble was apt to find the poor rodent. Rattata’s eyes grew wide like saucer pans as it watched the strange black bird lift himself up into the air and whip up powerful winds. They slashed through the landscape, sending bits of debris and freshly cut blades of grass spiraling in all directions. Rattata slung to the ground and squeaked in pain as the sharp breeze slammed against it, knocking the poor rodent in different directions. Small pebbles and sharp branches clawed at Rattata from all angles, creating sizeable gashed along its body.

“That wasn’t very nice!” Rattata squeaked angrily, slapping its tail roughly against the ground. It chased after the bird – under logs, on top of small ‘boulders’ – and eventually scaled the side of a tree. Once it managed to get just above the blackbird of death, Rattata leaped off its sacred branch into Syndicate’s back and bit into the bird’s feathery back. Crimson liquid blended with soft feathers and flesh, causing Rattata to recoil in disgust. “Ugh, yuck! What are you even eating, man?! You taste repulsive!” Rattata screamed.

Syndicate spun around elaborately and managed to knock the small purple rodent off its back. It plopped onto the ground with a loud squeak and rolled back onto its furry cream colored paws as Syndicate whipped up another onslaught of sharp winds, cutting and dicing through the furry rodent’s soft flesh. It huffed, stammering a bit, as it teetered in odd directions through the grass. It…wasn’t over with…not yet. It just couldn’t give up… “I just…ugh…ow…man that smart…I just…owww my shoulder! That really hurt! Can’t you just leave me alone?!” Rattata squeaked, whipping its tail around frantically. Seems a heat wave was on the horizon for this place soon, though the clear skies and amicable weather would last for Silas a bit longer...

"Finish this." 

It was a sharp command. Syn cawed, flapping his wings and head, trying to shake the feeling of those teeth sinking into his flesh and breaking skin. Loose feathers tumbled down to the ground, tiny droplets of blood stained the edges of leaves. But the shiny-obsessed murkrow did not falter. 

"No shinies," Syn declared, likely to the poor rat's confusion. "You don't have my big shiny or any little shinies. Very sad." Caw. Caw. He swooped down. "I blow you away now. I will find my big shiny and put it in the biggest, best nest and attract many mates. And you can't have it."

With powerful flaps of his wings, the little rat was bombarded with powerful gusts of wind again. Silas shook his head as he watched it all go down.

"Yes, you're a fine pokemon, Syn. We need to work on your listening skills, but you seem to get the hint relatively quickly. Come now, I believe that ratatta will be a bother no longer." And with that he would try to return the murkrow to his ball and pivot away, assuming the rattata didn't somehow, by some miracle, keep pursuing them.

The next gust of wind that Syn sent in Rattata’s direction would lift the small rodent up and send it spiraling far off into the distance. It was a whirlwind of bright purple streaks and knocked loose feathers. The sharp winds picked up other bits of dirt and debris, as well, sending them spiraling around the wild rodent to cut and carve into its flesh with sinister delight. Ouch! Branches snapped and crumbled as the rodent bounced through the thick overgrowth of the surrounding forest.

It landed just shy of the viewpoint of both Syn and Silas. What it would do next was perfect given Syn’s nasty attitude. The small purple rodent rooted around in the thick grass and scattered twigs until it located the prettiest and shiniest pebble of them all. “You’ll never get to have this then, you big meanie!” It laughed, before scurrying off through the thick undergrowth and disappearing deeper into the wilderness around them. Beaten. Battered. And bruised nearly beyond recognition. But it still had it’s mojo!

The harsh heat wave poured through the dark nigh air, creating a strange and nearly sticky feeling from the humidity that rose with it. Would Silas press on deeper into the surrounding wilderness to see what else lurked inside of Penumbra Hills? Or would he give up his goals of hoping to stumble upon a hidden passageway to the backside of the Observation Deck? If he chose to press on, it was clear that the less desirable whether would be here to stay for a while longer, and the surrounding forest would make navigate nearly impossible to trek through if he weren’t careful.

Silas chose to retreat.

At least for the time being.

He had to recollect himself and bring some new tactics. There were things to do and right now he felt rather stupid just putzing about in the woods. So like a wise man, he retreated before the woods could grow too thick and close in around him. That did not mean that he gave up on his plans.

Seasons passed. Gyms were battled, missions completed. Pokemon evolved. Silas returned to the edge of the hills with a new sense of purpose. Last time he was here, Syn was a mere murkrow and Mercenary was a houndour. My how time had flown. Today he brought a smaller, stronger team to face the woods with. 

Aqua could handle any water they encountered. Jessica could light up the darkness with her tail. And this recently caught nidoran? Well, he could clear the underbrush. Honestly, once that nidoran evolved into a nidorino, he would probably box it to train more useful pokemon. Nidoking was his aim. But without a moonstone in his possession, it was an empty goal.

That said, he faced the woods with a smirk and a sense of certainty. He had this handled. He WOULD find a back way into the Institute and nothing would stop him. He endured much since he was last here. Torrential rain. Horrible hail. And most recently? A choking sandstorm while in the company of a fellow team rocket operative. They weren't the /worst/ company. They actually had more than one braincell to rub together. But Silas didn't really care to focus on Caribes when he had hills to conquer. 

Time to once more 'get lost' all innocent like in the woods. He WOULD find what he was looking for and he WOULD earn the respect from the rockets when he managed it. Infiltration was one of his expertises. 

"Alright. Now...where to start?" he grumbled, staring at the trees.

He still wasn't much of an outdoorsy type. And these trees all looked alike as he put his feet to the path and started to walk, trudging towards the academy with haste and caution. He was ready to take down whatever dared cross his path. Thankfully the pokemon in his party had proven themselves competent. So hopefully he wouldn't have to worry about them needlessly floundering about for no good reason. Success was the ONLY option after all.

Silas would find his way back into the woods to be quite the daunting tasks. Most of the campers that were frequenting the hilly landscape during the favorable weathers of spring and autumn were all packed up and had shipped out once summer reared its ugly head. The storms that streaked through the harsh arid air of summer’s domain brought with them strong storms that caused most to stay inside. Even in the dead of night, the powerful heatwave that captivated the land by storm reached out in the dead of the night, wrapping its slimy tendrils all over those that risked their lives in the heat.

Something stirred underneath the littered leaves that covered the forest floor. It caused one of the dry, brittle leaves that must have fallen months ago with no one to raked it up or blow it away, to stir where it sat. The leaf wiggled back and forth until a small green spider crawled out from underneath and stared up at the trainer curiously, tapping its many feet on the ground with a quiet hum. A turtle, a sheep, and a spiky rabbit tagging alongside some dapper-dressed gentleman seemed to cause no need for alarm. Oh well, it could go back to doing spider things, then, if there was no danger here.

Oh, but wait. “You’re disturbing my family of eggs.” Spinarak crossed two of its many limbs together and growled. It gestured to a small tunnel in the ground that was buried in leaves, where it hid a clutch of small green eggs. “Will you kindly scooch out of here and leave us be? I don’t like getting ugly. I’m an honest, hard working arachnid, who just wants to see its kids have a better life than I had growing up. Can’t you even try to understand what that feels like? Bother someone else whose limbs aren't brittle and old, from carrying the weight of a bunch of screaming littles all day long. Act like you got a job, you owned freeloader!” Spinarak snapped at the end, nearly doing a 180 on its personality.

<Who you callin' a freeloader, you stupid spider?!> The belligerent nidoran challenged. He glared and his ears perked up, making him look bigger and more threatening. He even made a menacing little growl. He was clearly the superior pokemon here. SO BACK DOWN. <Get over here so I can squish you and maybe smash your stupid eggs!>

<Now, now, there is no need to be brute, newbie,> Jessica scolded primly. She wedged herself between the aggressive nidoran and the focus of his wrath. <Is this pent up rage from being unable to evolve?>

<I SO TOO CAN EVOLVE!>

<Are you quite certain? I thought your kind evolved fairly early, like my own? You seem rather...well, esteemed to put it politely.> The flaaffy said diplomatically, fluffing her fur with one nubbin hoof. She did have to look her best after all.

<ARE YOU CALLING ME OLD NOW?!> The nidoran lurched for the flaaffy who avoided the weak strike, tutting at him and bapping him with the tip of her light-bulb tail.

<Behave yourself. Our 'master' doesn't like nonsense.>

<Well he can choke on a—>

<Manners! Don't be crass.> Jessica hmphed and faced the spinarak, <Greetings, dearie, you seem to be under some delusion that we care about you or your eggs. If you had no confronted us, we would have happily just wandered on by, as you were not our objective. But alas, you have presented yourself to us as a problem and thus we will have to resolve that problem at our master's behest. It is a shame, really. I do some wonder if he will have us battle you or...>

Her tail wagged a bit. Nearby, Silas was finally registering that his pokemon were lagging behind. What in the world...oh. Was that a spinarak? It looked bigger and healthier than the one he already possessed. And as it was such a chore to train such a weak pokemon, he figured it would be ever so convenient to try catching one that was just naturally bigger and stronger.

"Stand to the side Jessica, this shouldn't be difficult," he said snobbishly.

<Uh oh~ You're about to be captured.> Jessica bleated catily. <Going to be one of us soon. Your poor widdly eggies. You should have just ignored us or scurried off before HE noticed you. I should feel pity but...I don't.>

Silas pulled a neat ball out of his pocket and promptly tossed it. No battling really required. He figured that should be enough to snare such a common pokemon, even from full health. He didn't want to waste his time battling if it wasn't required.

iminutive black-and-yellow striped arms rose high into the air. They curved, bending at their joints, and pointed towards Nidoran. “Watch your mouth little one!” The mint frosted spider snapped. Sharp black eyes with strikingly white irises as though the painter forgot what color goes where stared at its opponent. “You threaten my eggs, you threaten my colony!” It hissed firmly, though the corners of its lips curved upwards somewhat expectantly.

The hope that these visitors would have just as easily shoved off from whence they came dissipated. Small red fangs clacked together in irritation. The words so easily spoken could not be as readily forgotten by either party’s side. Spinarak watched the bright flamingo-hued sheep pull the mouthy hare off to the side and corrected her companion. Good. Spinarak turned away from the group with a simple wave. “Glad you’re talking sense into your idiot friend.”

Then the overload of bring aesthetics turned and talked to the miniature spider, who stopped dead in its tracks. What did they want? Some kind of prize for arguing with each other whilst it escaped? “You nearly ran over them!” It scurried through the tall grass in hot pursuit of Jessica. She was bold and brass, acting as though the world itself was her personal oyster. “I almost thought one of you lazy beasts would you know…be smart enough to get the rest of ya’ll to leave!” It huffed angrily, jabbing Jessica on her knee with one of its limbs.

When the pink atrocity huffed and informed the wild bug of her trainer’s plans, it’s eyes widened in alarm. There was absolutely no way that it wanted to join this team of lazy bums who couldn’t even watch where they were going! “You tell him he better not or….I’ll….” It gulped and thought really hard about what it would do. What could it do? “I’ll make everyone’s lives a living heck! Your trainer…you…random people on the street…NO ONE WILL GET ANY REST! MARK MY WORDS!” And shortly after its declaration, Silas zapped it up inside of a ball with a simple click.

Silas was oblivious to the spider's predicament. Once it was caught, he wandered over to pick up the wall and looked it over. Hm. Acceptable. He would look into training that spider later into an ariados if the mood struck. For now, there were things to do and bickering pokemon got in the way of progress. He glowered at them and Jessica just huffed, crossing her arms. The nidoran was not only unrepentant but was still smashing about the underbrush like a nuisance.

With a groan, Silas returned Jessica and Aqua to their pokeballs. The nidoran was stomping about and Silas was ready to scold the pokemon before he suddenly started to glow. Oh. What was this? The nidoran, who was already quite strong for nidoran standards, was now evolving, as that...encounter apparently enraged him so much that he needed to get all of that extra energy out somehow. 

Silas leaned back with a smirk and watched the scene.

The little nidoran's form morphed and shifted and expanded, and soon, the light shattered to reveal a larger, but similar looking creature. A nidorino. Once he found a moonstone, he could evolve him and have a proper nidoking in his collection. But for now... He returned the Nidorino to his ball before he could run about and chaos more chaos. Silas straightened his clothes. 

He needed to be sneaky, not loud. Perhaps he would use some of his newer, less...bold pokemon for a while. They likely knew how to KEEP QUIET.
