Adrian never did one of these before. But when filling out the application he realized how poorly suited his current lineup was for catching bug pokemon without damaging them. He had Buddy with sleep powder, but...she was a grass type, and he heard that some of these bugs could be really strong. If she got into a fight with a powerful one, she'd easily get knock out in a hit or two without being able to counter meaningfully. Barry was a strong pokemon who could handle hits and dish them out but...there was nothing he could do for status, or if he ran into anything that resisted flying or normal moves. Ig had tons of resistances but he was a weak baby rock that needed far more training. Same with Bounce and her ability to Yawn—the spheal currently had no business being anywhere near a battle.
What did that leave him with?
Well. He had Flicker.
Sure, she couldn't status things beyond confusion, but her embers could take down most bugs and her ghost typing made her immune to the common plethora of normal moves that many pokemon knew. She wasn't as high leveled as Barry or Buddy, but after today, if all went well, that could feasibly change! Lots of bugs. Lots of chances to gain some much needed experience. She hadn't really gotten a chance to do more than babysit eggs since that one incident on the Mizuma Estate where she scared a spinarak off his shoulder.
"You ready?" he asked his little friend. Flicked floated around his hands. Adrian found himself smiling. He still recalled how he found her taking refuge from the rain in a trash bin. How she got comfortable in his backpack and helped him hatch the trio of eggs he found himself with as a newbie trainer just starting out and dreaming of becoming a breeder. Look how far he'd come since then? He had his own little property now and a fledgling breeding business. Flicker got to help mind eggs whenever he was at the estate, and the rest of his pokemon had a chance to stretch their legs.
Adrian stepped out into the grasses when they were given the okay and looked around. Curious. Searching.
"Where would I hide if I was a bug?" he pondered aloud. Adrian paused to check his little pamphlet of spotted species again.

There were tons of places if you knew where to look, in the tall grass, under rocks, in the trees, buried in the ground, any cracks of crevice of trees or rocks which they could find. Not all bugs were hiding though, some were known to be more aggressive and that was just what Adrian and Flicker ran into. A scyther came soaring above and paused when it saw the strange flame that danced around Adrian, it buzzed closer to check it out. Shiny: p8k90zqK1-421-42

Woah. Was that? It was. A scyther!
Adrian was in a bit of awe. Such a strong bug pokemon!
Problem was, the rare pokemon was notorious for being hard to catch...Armed with a pokeball, he pondered what to do...He could weaken it, but that would lower his score. He had limited balls so...
(One hail Mary wouldn't hurt, would it?)
"Flicker, use minimize," Adrian said as he lobbed a sport ball at the sycther, just on the off chance this roaming bug was startled or something and stayed in the ball without a fight. He didn't have high hopes honestly. But hey, nobody would be able to say he didn't give it a try before be started dealing damage to make the mantis more catchable. He watched as the litwick floated forth between them and started to compact her form tinier and tinier so that it would harder to hit her. She was already such a little ghost. No doubt aiming for her would be tricky all squished into a little ghost ball like this.
(Adrian already regretted not training up Spheal or Wooper more. A good yawn would make this so much easier. But those were lessons learned.)

Alright. This wasn't going to work out. That scyther just cut the ball in half. He needed to improve his odds if he didn't want his litwick knocked out in a hit or two. "Flicker, use ember. Just once." Then he readied another ball. The little ghost, who was all tiny now, let out a burst of little embers alllll over the scyther as it inspected her curiously. She giggled impishly, having escaped being seriously hurt due to her ghostly form being untouchable by a normal strike from those blades. She floated around the scyther, playful.
"Catch me. Catch you. Let's play the catching game!" Flicker giggled as she floated around the scyther's head. "First one to stay in the ball wins~" She giggled again as Adrian threw another ball. Maybe this time it would work...Or at least maybe the mantis wouldn't just casually slice it in half without a second glance. That kinda smarted his ego there...Just...not even a look. Or any effort to dodge. It just distractedly slashed the ball out of the air like it did this all day and could do it longer if needed. That didn't give him the best confidence in catching...

That minimize didn't seem to be helping that much...
And those leers were making Adrian nervous.
"Flicker, use confuse ray." Adrian said as he prepped another ball to throw at the scyther.
He watched her continue to dance with the scyther, not quite able to avoid its scythes despite her smaller size. He managed to avoid being burned too both times he clawed her. Well aware that they risked Flicker getting one-shot to a strong hit if her defense was lowered too much, he knew he'd have to do something to increase Flicker's odds of just not being struck by the powerful bug. The little flame on her head began to pulse, growing large and smaller as she 'flashed' her ghostly flame in a dizzying pattern. Brighter and brighter, disorienting and intriguing. Hopefully the confusion would be enough to tilt the odds in their favor.
With a long inhale, Adrian threw yet another ball. Hopefully the scyther wouldn't knock out his little candle ghost before he could catch it. And it would be an absolute travesty to have to run or knock it out in turn. But that was the game of the bug catching contest. With one pokemon...you could lose just out of the gate.

The scyther didn't need the confusion to confuse itself, it once again tried the False Swipe on Flicker as if it had forgotten it didn't work. It tried slash the ray the litwick sent at it, which obviously didn't work and it stumbled about aimlessly and couldn't avoid the sport ball this time. A moment later Adrian had a entry for the contests final judgement. If kept at the end of the BCC it will be added to Adrian's PC. ScytherLevel: 13 OT: Adrian Hartt Moves: Leer, Fury cutter, False Swipe, Wing Attack Ability: Swarm or Technician HP: 49% Balls Broke: 2 Scyther Name: [Choose] Gender: [Choose] Level: 13 OT: Adrian Hartt Moves: Leer, Fury cutter, False Swipe, Wing Attack Ability: Swarm or Technician Nature/Personality: [Choose]
Flicker grew 2 levels to [Lv 17]1! She can learl Hex if she forgets another move! (She will have 45/49 HP after level up) Adrian has 12/15 Sport Balls and 1/5 Encounters left. Caught(30%): RM0jr5ZF1-100(ooc: too lazy to calculate of False Swipe hits or not, now it doesn't make any difference And apparently confusion doesn't affect the catch rate.) 1-100

It...swiped at Flicker a few more times then stayed in the ball. IT STAYED IN THE BALL. Adrian whooped a bit in excitement. He caught it! With a grin, he congratulated Flicker for a job well done, before returning her to her ball to rest. Adrian scooped the scyther and grinned. Okay, well, so...maybe it was a bit preemptive but...he couldn't help but feel like this might what he kept. Of course he would continue looking around but this was quite the catch. Adrian pocketed the ball, aware he'd have to release the mantis if he caught something else, but at the moment, he couldn't imagine something better!
So he forged onward, shuffling through the grass, more curious than anything else. As he'd found what he was essentially looking for at the start.

Adrian would notice the odd husk. Huh. Was that a—
Oh, yeah, it was a pokemon. He examined it and decided that scyther was still a better catch than a nincada, even if this one looked pretty strong. Sure, it might not be the winning catch, but it was a rare one. He also wasn't really familiar with nincada. He knew they had an odd split evolution but the details got fuzzy after that. Maybe he should study more.
"Well. This will count as my second encounter, so might as well get some training out of it. Flicker, use ember on it a couple times. That should be enough to scare it off." Adrian said as he let the little candle out of her ball. The litwick giggled and darted over to the bug, floating around it with a smile. Then, that ghostly flame ebbed and surged...and it started to spit tiny balls of fire at its foe.

The flames was more than enough to scare off the ground dwelling bug, it tried to defend itself and retaliate but swiping with its claws at Flicker, but the ghost wouldn't feel a thing. The nincada realized it was more than it could handle and it disappeared underground. Flicker grew 2 levels to [Lv 19]! (She will have 49/53 HP after level up) Adrian has 12/15 Sport Balls and 2/5 Encounters left.

Alrighty, next encounter.
He checked over his shoulder and noticed a guy watching him and after checking his shirt, he realized this was a contest staff member. Probably noting what everyone battled and making sure nobody tried to squeak in an extra encounter. Well. His plan didn't involve any extra bugs, so, he offered the guy an awkward wave before poking around in the grass a little more. He really was appreciating Flicker's ghost typing right now. While she wasn't fast enough or strong enough to outspeed or OHKO her opponents, her typing kept her relatively intact so far. No need for a potion.
"What's over here?" he asked himself as he moved to go investigate around the fountain. It was a water source so maybe something was over here getting a drink. Were there any part water-type bugs in this park? Adrian checked his pamphlet again. HM. There were bugs on this he'd never heard of before, so he didn't have a clue what their typing was without checking his pokedex or pokegear.
Absently, he sat on the edge of the fountain to do a little research, well aware he was wasting precious time to slake his sudden curiosity.

"What even is that?" Adrian asked aloud when the shelmet appeared. "...It...looks like some kind of knight helmet." He peeked at the pamphlet. "Must be a shelmet. Huh. Well. Still not cooler than a scyther so...sorry, bud. Flicker, use ember." He sent the tiny candle after the shelmet and glanced at the observer. He wondered how the other contestants were doing. If anyone found something of interest and just weren't quitting yet until they had used up all their encounters. He felt like he was blowing through all of his rather quickly...Was he doing this right?
Flicker darted over to the shelmet and rained down little embers with a giggle. Dance little bug, dance~! It's getting hot in here, isn't it?
Burning up bugs seemed to be her fate as that was the only kind of pokemon she had battled since Adrian caught her. But she didn't mind it. Bugs were fun to chase around and most of them couldn't do much damage to her when they were this low level. And that meant she could get all strong~ Tee-hee. She would burn, burn, burn~!
