sitting on a low wall to tie the laces of their brand new running shoes, eden was taking the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings of the new city and the pleasant weather of the day. after spending a little time in the built up area, their mood had significantly improved, but that didn't mean that they were in any rush to head back out again. they'd done one route now, that was enough for a while, right? they deserved a big long break for all that effort that they'd put in... except, cherrygrove really wasn't that big, and they had already done pretty much all that they could think to do in what would be barely more than a town where eden was from. and violet city was just at the end of the next route, wasn't it? just think of how many shops they'd have there... but no, not yet. the journey from new bark town to here had been a lot for them to take in, and while they'd already gotten fairly used to having bulbasaur and even sentret with them now, there was still the matter of... the rat. eden pulled their third occupied pokeball out of their pocket and stared at it. they'd caught a rat. an ugly, nasty, probably diseased by the colour of it, rat. a rat that they had run from and screamed in fear of when they'd first seen it, and which they now had to bring around with them like some lead weight... they could just release it. break the pokeball and send it packing. they could give it away, try to trade it away, or just... leave the pokeball here and walk away and never think about it again. they hadn't intended to catch it after all: it had been a panicked accident, so surely they couldn't be held accountable for that... but eden had always struggled to own up to mistakes. they usually doubled down on them, claiming they were fully intentional actually, and spinning them to make them into a positive action somehow instead. they'd ripped their pretty coordinator outfit? that was part of the look actually, it's called 'distressed', you wouldn't understand. they'd tripped up and fallen while they were walking? no they hadn't, that was a dance move, did you really not recognise a dancer when you saw one? they'd accidentally caught a pokemon they hadn't intended to? ... maybe you were just underestimating their catch and it was actually much cooler than you thought. maybe they were intentionally trying to get you to underestimate them so that they could prove you wrong in battle. maybe maybe maybe... with a sigh, they let the hand with the pokeball rest against their lap as they kicked their feet against the wall that they sat against. they didn't need to make a choice right now anyway. just before they headed out to the next city. they had all the time in the world before then to think things over a little more...

As Eden sat there, minding their own business, contemplating how to explain to others why they caught an ugly, nasty, diseased RAT of all things...something shifted in the bushes nearby. Shifted...and slithered. It was a subtle motion, easily mistaken for the wind rattling through branches. But a taillow landed nearby to peck at some leaf litter, looking for food, and after just a moment, alit again, flickering into the air without hesitation. Like it knew it was in danger. Like it sensed the eyes of a predator. Slowly, the purple, serpentine form of an ekans appeared through the shadows. It hissed softly as it turned its head towards the sky, silently cursing its prey leaving so hastily. No chance given for it to pounce. The end of its tail rattled with frustration before it realized that Eden was there and glanced in her direction. Yellow eyes stared blank and unblinking. It coiled up on itself. Cautious. Waiting.
A [LV 6] ekans has slithered onto the scene. What does Eden do?

eden didn't notice the pokemon at first. they were far too caught up in their own problems to even noticed the taillow approach and flee so rapidly, their gaze fixed down on the pokeball that they were rolling between their hands. with an eventual sigh as no magic solution presented itself, eden slipped down from the wall, new running shoes touching back to the ground as they straightened their clothes and took a step forwards. the sound of a rattle caught their attention, and their gaze swept around to look for the source of the sound, eventually settling on a purple coil and yellow eyes. and for not the first time that day, the trainer let out an ear-splitting scream. just as last time, the content of their hands was thrown up into the air as well, and the newly caught shiny rattata was flung out of the pokeball by the movement. eden had turned to leap over the wall that they had been seated on, ducking behind it so that only their fingers clinging to the top of the brickwork could still be seen, and so the rodent pokemon was left facing the ekans they had been abandoned with. a slow gulp was the only response from the rather outmatched normal type, who looked around nervously for guidance or assistance. he had asked to come along with the trainer because of the experience of fighting beside a partner. it had helped to bolster his confidence as well as to show him that there were others in the world who really did care about his well-being besides just his mother... except... the sentret that he had fought beside was nowhere to be seen, and even the trainer themselves seemed out of sight. thankfully, eden made their nearby presence known with a helpful screech of, "what is WRONG WITH THIS REGIOOOOON?" deom behind the wall. well, at least rattata knew their new trainer was close by. just... not close enough to protect him from the snake he was now facing. entirely unsure of what to do, he took a deep breath and turned to face the enemy, wagging his tail fiercely in the hopes that doing so might just scare the ekans away...
I am so here for Eden having the worst day ever x) * Rattata has been sent out! Rattata used Tail Whip on the Ekans!

The scream startled the ekans enough that it coiled up tighter and hissed, looking for the source of that AWFUL noise. WHY did that human make that SOUND?! It was TERRIBLE! Hissssss. It glared at the rat that landed before it. Snack? The human at least had the grace to offer it a tasty after brutalizing its eardrums. <You look ssssssscrumptious. You will be even better in my belly, you sssssssstrange colored rat.> the ekans hissed with predatorial menace. The rattata was the perfect size to keep it full for a day or two. It just had to catch it off guard so it could stun it and swallow it whole. And those thoughts were evident in its eyes. The pair didn't come closer to each other, but the tension was practically physical. It dripped from every pore. But who would strike first? if eden had known that their scream was so potent, they might have thought to use it more. screech was a pokemon attack after all - maybe their own voice could be helpful in battle. of course, they'd have to be actively thinking about using it in that case, and not simply reacting to scary situations around them. it was fairly unlikely they'd prove to be useful then, given that for both of the previous two battles, they had disappeared from sight and hidden until it was over - and even the two before that, they hadn't given all that much guidance. when deciding to become a pokemon trainer, they really hadn't put any thought into what they would do if they came across a scary pokemon, and that lack of forethought was coming back to bite them now. and it was even worse for rattata. the poor thing had had a difficult life so far already, and this journey with a trainer was supposed to be different! they were supposed to protect him, not abandon him to fight far bigger battles than he'd ever faced in the past! the temptation to just lie down and cover his eyes with his paws was incredibly difficult to resist. that's what he'd done before after all, when the other rattata had bullied him, though it had never really done him much good then either. and this was different - they had been cruel, but they wouldn't have eaten him like this snake was apparently going to do! his limbs were trembling by now then as he backed into the wall that eden was hiding on the other side of. he couldn't lie down and let himself get eaten, and maybe, just maybe, his trainer would recover and come back to help out with those other pokemon of theirs if he could just keep this thing busy until then... with no other options (even if this one still felt terrible),his trembling legs carried him a few steps forwards, before he closed his eyes and barreled towards the snake that had threatened him with eyes screwed tightly shut, hoping that his tackle attack would make contact all the same.

As the rat came barreling towards the snake, the ekans waited for the little green rattata to come closer before opening its maw and spraying a series of sharp, poisonous needles. Those needles cut deep and left little scratches all over the rattata, but fortunately, none of them punctured deep enough to leave him woozy from being poisoned by this creature's venom. He even managed to push through the pain to slam into the snack and make it rear back, a little annoyed to see its prey fighting against its own efforts to eat. With the rattata now firmly within its strike range, the ekans slowly uncoiled to wrap its long body in a lazy loop around the rattata. No squeezing, just a ring of doom that it would have to hurtle over in order to escape the ekan's deadly intent. Poor little ratty. while the battle began in earnest on the other side of the wall, eden found themselves sighing as their own reaction finally dawned on them. honestly, they were getting frustrated at themselves for this already. as a coordinator they had never run away screaming from a challenge, had they? no! they had faced any threat to their title head on! so why was it suddenly so hard to do it now? probably because none of their rivals had ever used such gross pokemon but that shouldn't matter. adapt and overcome! standing up and turning around to slam their hands stubbornly down on top of the wall that they'd been hiding behind, a thought did briefly occur to eden as they watched their rattata being slowly circled by the snake. if they just... ducked away for a little bit longer... maybe the rat problem would... you know... solve itself... but then the stupid thing just had to turn and look up at them with those big excited eyes ad urgh, they really weren't quite heartless enough to just let it die when it was looking at them. the rattata's pokeball was fished out again then, the pokemon being returned to it not because it was injured but because eden just really didn't want to actually use it in a fight. it didn't matter though - the rattata still saw eden as his her regardless. sentret was thrown out into the spot that rattata had just left, eden having not quite taken in the situation enough to realise that the encircling snake had been preparing an attack on that very space. "scratch it, sentret," eden called to the normal type, who was starting to get deja vu around being sent into a currently ongoing fight with no context for who was being attacked or why. the instruction was clear though, and the enemy nearby, so as she had done each time before as well, she took in a deep breath to settle her nerves, and launched forwards to slash at the ekans in front of her.

As the little green rodent was swiftly withdrawn into its Poké Ball, the Ekans seized the opportunity. With an ominous glint in its red eyes, it unleashed a vicious Poison Sting attack. A barrage of sharp, toxic needles shot forth from its mouth, aiming to engulf the incoming Sentret in a noxious storm. Sentret, stepping into the fray with determination, was met with the venomous assault. The poisonous needles struck her with a series of stinging, painful hits, leaving her with tiny scratches all over her furry form. Fortunately, none of them penetrated deeply enough to poison her, but they stung and burned with each jab. In response to Sentret's appearance, the Ekans twisted its sinuous body, arching upward to stare down at Sentret with a menacing leer. Its cold, calculating gaze sent a shiver down Sentret's spine, but she held her ground, showing no signs of backing down. Refusing to be deterred, Sentret pressed forward, her eyes locked onto the serpentine Ekans. With a fierce battle cry, she slashed out with her claws, her Scratches leaving thin, crimson lines across the Ekans' scaly hide. The Ekans hissed in pain as Sentret's attack landed true, but it refused to waver. " Impressive," the Ekans admitted, licking a drop of its own venom that trickled from its mouth. eden hadn't really considered that the ekans would get a chance to attack a they spent time swapping their pokemon out. it was one of those facts that seemed so obvious the moment after it had happened, but that hadn't entered their mind at all beforehand. oh well, it was sentret that faced the consequences of their ignorance, not them. the purple spray of poison stings struck the normal type before she had even touched her paws down to the ground, causing her to stagger backwards immediately. unfortunate, and certainly not helpful in letting her get her bearings in this new battle, but nothing she couldn't handle. one day, she would like to be released from her 'ball just to be given a snack, or a pat, or to frolic in a meadow for a little while. but no, it seemed she was destined to be met by the face of a new enemy every time. oh well - at least her trainer trusted her to battle. that was something. it was no time to be thinking on that right now though. as she shook off the stings that had embedded into the skin beneath her fur, she met the gaze of the ekans as it leered down on her, but she refused to be intimidated by the creature. she hadn't met one of these pokemon before, so perhaps her ignorance was responsible for her confidence. she didn't really have an idea of how dangerous they could be, or that she was the perfect prey for it to swallow whole at the end of the battle. that fear had come instinctively to rattata, but sentret seemed a little more resilient to it, and so she felt more than confident enough to launch her first scratch attack against the snake. she had been ready to continue the battle alone, claws out and ready to slash again, but eden was eager to shout out another comment. they might have been a little absent before but they were here now and that was what mattered. they were in the zone, on the field, ready to take action in the battle at hand. sentret was doing the hard work but they could offer the confident commands of a trainer, such as... "again, sentret!"it wasn't much, nor was it strictly necessary, but it was nice to know that she wasn't alone out here, even if she had been in the last battle. personally, it didn't matter too much to her either way when she'd lived quite successfully alone in the wilds before now, but the feeling of support was appreciated at least. the instruction was clear as well, and so her arm was raised high again, her stance wide and as threatening as the small pokemon could manage, as she slashed her little claws towards the snake's face.

"I think you are trying to defend that little strange Rattata. How about you hand me the Rattata and I'll let you go. If not, I'll have you both for a nice feast." The Ekans stared down at the Sentret. The Rattata snack now potentially upgraded to a feast with a Sentret. The question was, which one was appetizer and which one was the entree. The normal type was ready to defend herself though, as she raised her claws and dashed forward for yet another painful Scratch. The Ekans was down to its last-- it had no legs-- tail. With another scratch, the Ekans should be down and would quit its threat of eating Eden's caught Pokemon as delicious meal. With the Sentret defending the poor Rattata, perhaps the two could develop new bonds from this encounter. oh, rattata had been out here? see, it would be very helpful if eden could give her a little rundown of what had happened whenever they sent her out into battle, or perhaps provide a little note with the important details on it. this was not the first time that sentret had found herself in the middle of a battle where her enemy was the one updating her on what had happened. perhaps thankfully for her though, she was not a pokemon of many words, and so the only response she gave to the ekans was a nod of confirmation. she had protected the rattata in the other battle they had shared together after all - she had dived in front of attacks for him so had made no disguise of her defense. he was small and young and clearly very scared, and so it was sentret's duty to protect him. so no, she would not be handing over her now teammate, no matter how the ekans glared and glared and glared at her. for all its confidence, the snake did not seem to have been ready for the scratch, and sentret could see the opportunity ahead of her. as it fell back from the first slash of her little claws, she lifted her other paw and rushed forwards again, attempting to catch it from the other side as it tried to slither away. she was a warrior, a brave fighter against evil, and knowing that she was now doing this to help protect rattata had only fueled her on further. eden had opened their mouth to give the command again, only for sentret to beat them to it. their lips closed again silently, a look of self-disappointment tinging their features. sentret really didn't need them here, did she? they might as well have stayed behind the wall then... just as their shoulders were slumping, their motivation fizzling out as quickly as it had arrived, the normal type glanced back over her shoulder in eden's direction. it was just a tiny gesture before she faced her active enemy again, but it was enough to stop eden spiraling. oh. maybe their pokemon did appreciate that they were here then. oh... well... good...

The ekans tilted its head for a moment as Sentret gave it a little nod as answer, was that a yes or a no? Action spoke louder than words though, when she let her claws speak for her. It hissed annoyed, why did all the prey always have to fight so hard against it? Couldn't they just give up as soon as they saw it? It would make things so much easier and it would be a lot less hungry. Hungry ekans' wasn't a rare sight in these parts, but they all seemed to live tough hungry lives. The snake took advantage of Sentret being distracted by looking back towards a wall, and a barrage of poisonous needles rained down on her, but once again none of them really managed to potrude her skin and do some serious damage. Sentret leaped forward, faster, and faster, and faster! Much faster than she had ever run before and she took the snake by surprise. It had no chance of dodging and collapsed unconscious on the ground. A bonding moment for Sentret and Rattata this probably wasn't, since the shiny rat wasn't around to see that he had been helped again, but both of them had learned a thing or two and perhaps gotten a bit more confidence. If Eden should feel a sudden wish to catch a hungry, "ugly" snake, which surely would do well on a team with teammates it might want to try eat once in a while. Now was the chance! "Oh no, oh no this will not do at all!" A gentleman said worried as he rushed down the street looking around frantically. "Where did it go? She will kill me if I lose it! And today of all times!" He whined to himself and spotted Eden behind the wall, he paused confused momentarily but then his pressing matter was more important than his wonder about what she was doing and he rushed over to her. "Oh miss, miss! Have you seen a hat fly by? A gust of wind took it and its my grandfather's one and I need it for a social event this evening! I don't dare think of what they other will say if I come without a hat! Oh no! A pokemon might have taken and destroyed it!" He rambled distressed and rubbed his hands. her claws made contact, and the snake lay still, sentret taking a moment to catch her breath now that the adrenaline in her veins was far more obvious though beginning to die away. she sat herself down on the floor for a moment, pulling at one of the poison stings that had remained embedded in her stomach and wincing a little as she tugged it out and threw it aside. no real damage there though thankfully - with a little rest, she'd be ready to go again. meanwhile, eden was breathing a quiet sigh of relief at the battle victory, before attempting to clamber back over the wall. it had been much easier to vault it when they were scared apparently, as the return journey was a lot less graceful. they'd only managed to get one leg over to the right side when a voice reached their ears - one that they could not immediately respond to given their current predicament. sentret had stood up by now and had walked across to eden, tugging helpfully on their boot to try and give them some stability as they completed their climb. once back on two legs again, brushing down their clothes, they looked towards the frantic man yelling some kind of sob story in their direction. something something hat, something something. eden frowned, wondering why someone was even bothering to tell them this, before eventually realising that there had been a request for help in the middle of those words. "no," they replied, having been too distracted by the ekans to notice a hat, but that was't the full request though, was it? it might have been the only part so blatantly spelled out, but this person wanted more than just a yes or no answer... with a sigh, they glanced down at sentret, who looked up at them blankly in return, long ears bobbing as she did so. it's not like they really had anything better to do. "so like... which direction did it go in or whatever?" eden mumbled with the least possible enthusiasm for the task that they were voluntarily offering to do.

The man deflated visibly when he was told a flat no, it didn't matter to him if she said no to having seen the hat or to help him, he was in as much trouble no matter what. He was wringing his nice white gloves in his hands in his distress, "what should I do? It's a brand name, very old and now its gone! I'm in so much trouble!" He whined to himself and was about to leave when Eden offered her help, he either didn't notice her lack of enthusiasm or didn't care. "You will help me?" He asked hopefully and then attempted to grab her hand, "Thank you! Thank you so much my lady! If you find it for me I will pay you handsomely!" He promised and that apparently was enough for him to gather his wits and think straight again. "It was blown down this road, and really it shouldn't have gotten this far if it had just been the wind," panic sneaked into his voice again, he cleared his throat and was quiet for two heartbeats, "It has to either be further down this road or into that side alley," he said and glanced at Eden. "You can check the alley and I'll go down here!" He said and hurried further down the road leaving the nasty, nasty alley for Eden. Truth to be told the only difference between the main road she was on and the alley, was the size, and that there were a few big trashcans standing up against the wall and of course lots of windows and backdoors which could hide stuff, but it was clean and a few of the windows even had small pots with plants in them. Flowers were too late this time of year. Something rummaged around at the other end of the alley, a little brown striped pokemon was running in a zigzag patterne, throwing something around which it played with. It had a round end, and a rim.. from this distance it really looked a lot like a hat! Zigzagoon [Lv 9] is running around with something which looks like a.. hat! recoiling away from the attempt to grab their hand, eden grimaced at the surprise movement before relenting a moment later. it was the mention of being rewarded that had lowered their guard a little, happy to be more sociable and pleasant if it meant that they would get something out of this. they let their hand be shaken as they listened to the additional details of the lost hat - not a whole lot to go off but a starting point at least. eden had already opened their mouth to suggest they take the main road when the man beat them to it and assigned them to the alley. eden's jaw snapped shut with a huff as they clenched their teeth in annoyance at that decision made against their will. just think of the reward... it'll be worth it for that. they practically stomped their way over to their destination, sentret trotting rapidly by their side to keep up. there was no point returning the pokemon if they were about to face more peril in a creepy alley after all. sentret had proven herself fierce and brace already, so she was probably a good ally for this sort of occasion. as eden slowed down to cringe away from the trashcans that lined the wall, sentret took the lead to seek out movement or danger ahead of them. it was she who first spotted the pokemon further down the alleyway, letting out a squeak in eden's direction to try to get their attention. it took several attempts, but eventually the trainer was looking in the direction that she was pointing in time to catch a glimpse of something darting by. "urgh, I bet it's another rat," they grumbled to themselves as they stepped forwards to peer into the darker corners ahead of them. maybe they should send out their own rat to communicate? then at least the stupid thing would be doing some good. with sentret till close by, eden pulled out the rattata's pokeball and pointed it towards the moving shape, releasing the shiny rodent pokemon much closer to the target than they currently were. hopefully it wasn't violent, or rattata was going to be in for a nasty surprise as he opened his eyes to see a... zigzagoon nearby? he skittered backwards as the zigzagoon threw something into the air, approaching again a moment later to sniff at the object and to try to figure out what it was.
