Name: Freya Baxton
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Trainer Type: Ace Trainer
Hometown: Mossui Town, Kitakami
Appearance:
Standing at 5’9”, Freya is on the taller side for a woman, with a slim but athletic build. Her medium complexion is often deeper in the summer season, as she tans exceptionally well rather than burning. Her eyes are topaz yellow, with shades of ochre and gold giving her irises brightness and depth like that of the gemstone she wears pinned at her throat. She is a fashion conscious young woman and likes to look trendy, which means you will find her in a variety of outfits depending on the occasion and her make up is often always done when she starts her day. Despite what it may seem, her hair isn’t black with blue highlights but the other way around. She likes the aesthetic of dark hair with bright accents, and thinks black is a more flattering color for herself in general. Her ears are pierced and if she has the earrings to match an outfit, she will wear them. Her favorites are generally large, chunky earrings, though she will wear smaller ones when the outfit or situation calls for it.
An experienced trainer, Freya is never without a purse or bag of some kind to carry items needed for a journey, though she is loath to pack too heavy. Wandering around with a big backpack suits some, but not her! She can manage on the minimum if it means not ruining her outfit by toting around with a tent on her back! This also means that her shoes, while high quality and trendy in style, are always comfortable. One can't go around the world in uncomfortable shoes! And while she does love a good high heel, you rarely will find her in a pair unless she's just planning on an easy night with no travel or dancing or otherwise putting in some steps.
Personality:
Freya is like a force of nature—full of wonder and near impossible to stop once she gets her mind set on something. She is bold to the point of recklessness, and hasn’t met a stranger yet! One could easily describe her as gregarious, enjoying the presence of pokemon and people, rarely failing to take on the opportunity to get to know someone better if they strike her interest or she’s simply bored. On top of that natural sociableness, she is curious. Insatiably curious. If she gets sniffing on a lead, she will read every book she can find and seek out the experience herself if it is possible. She has crossed deserts and climbed mountains and adventured in deep, tangled woods—this experience seeking has made her nigh fearless, at least towards journeying around new places and meeting new people.
Born and raised of the dragon clan, Freya understands the importance of study and constant striving to better one’s self in mind, body and spirit. Whether due to her bloodline, her training, or her empathetic nature—she can understand pokemon speak. As long as she can remember, she could speak their language, though even her parents aren’t quite sure when she started doing so.
However, for all the seriousness of her upbringing and the uniforms she had to wear through her school years, Freya is quite fashion conscious and fashion savvy. She likes to look good—which means dressing up, even if she’s just going for a bit of training in the woods. After all, what if you met a super cool legendary pokemon out there? Wouldn’t YOU want to look your best for such an occasion? On the flipside of this behavior, she can be very self-conscious if she feels unattractive or under-dressed. Getting dirty is part of adventuring, but she is always embarrassed to be caught in such a state!
Deep down, beneath her confidence and boldness, Freya is introspective and often insecure. Making good impressions and holding herself to excessively high standards was simply part of her upbringing. Failure is something she struggles with deeply and it can leave her rattled—even from minor events that should just blow over. She has to do better. Has to be the best. She has to be worthy for the Elders and restore honor to her family name.
History:
Freya was born in the isolated population of Mossui Town, Kitakami. Her father’s family originally hailed from Blackthorn in Johto, as they were a branch family of the Dragon Clan found there. However, as a failed dragon tamer that never passed his trials, he left in disgrace on his own quest to redeem himself. He ended up in Kitakami as an outsider and was content enough studying the resident dragons there, even if the locals didn’t trust him. But one day, he met a young local woman who was descended from the Paldean Dragon Clan, and the pair hit it off. Both were ‘failures’ in the eyes of the families, with expectations too high to manage, and in this, they found connection and fell in love.
Their only daughter Freya was born a little over a year after they wed.
She grew up in a local culture rich with legends and masks and festivals, but was raised with the knowledge that she was the descendent of dragon tamers. That it was her destiny—her duty—to understand and tame dragons herself so that she could prove herself worthy in the Dragon’s Den of Blackthorn. Restore honor to their family in both Johto and Paldea. Quite the heavy burden to place on a child, no?
An adventurous child, she grew up chasing the myths she read about in books and heard in stories. It was hard to keep her in one place for long and she was always babbling to people and pokemon alike about all the new things she learned. It was clear from a young age that she wasn’t one who would be content staying in a tiny town for all her life.
On an elementary school trip to the Crystal Pool on top of Oni Mountain, Freya strayed from the other children in her class when she spotted a clefairy and followed it into a cave. Fascinated by the pink pokemon, she didn’t watch her step and ended up falling. She isn’t quite sure how she survived her fall, she just knew that she hit the water and everything went black, and when she woke up, a beautiful Milotic had encircled her and helped her back to the surface. There in that underground pool she saw many fascinating pokemon all living together in harmony. Magikarp and Feebas, Barboach and Gyarados…She’d only heard about some of these pokemon in stories. It was like she was one of the heroines in a myth—the experience transcendent. She lingered in the water for a little while before the Miltoic helped her to the shore and flickered out of sight in a splash of colorful scales.
Freya managed to navigate her way out of the cave with some help from some cleffa and clefairys that seemed to know she needed help. By a stroke of luck, a group of search and rescue team was passing by and she was able to get home safely—wet, cold and bruised, but relatively unharmed.
It was that day that she developed a deep fascination with pokemon connected to lore and myths, and she became absolutely impossible to keep a handle on. She was out of the house at every opportunity, exploring and looking for curious new things. On one of these ventures, she would even find an odd looking growlithe that still had the typing of the ancient breed—a member of an isolated population that remained in the region. He would become her companion and family pet.
When she turned ten, her family moved to Paldea for work and research, where she was enrolled into the Academy there. Freya thrived. There were so many books and pokemon here!
She was very studious and became a champion ranked trainer before her graduation at 18. A distant cousin of hers was the art teacher there, another member of the Dragon Clan, though it was evident that he wasn’t especially connected to his Clan. She never did ask why. It wasn’t her business to pry into the private lives of teachers.
However, during her time at the Academy, she struggled to figure out her ‘treasure’. As a child of Dragon Tamers, failed as they were, it was expected for her to do the same. To tame a dragon and prove herself worthy one day at the shrine at the Dragon’s Den. There were many dragons native to Paldea—including the dratini that her own father failed to tame. But it wasn’t until she was mostly through the gym challenge that she met a tiny little dragon that caught her attention in the Glaseado Mountain outside of Montenevera.
Frigibax was very small and being picked on by a gang of Snover, and even when Freya chased the snover away, it held its own, very distrustful. She fed the frigibax a sandwich before deciding to just leave the wild pokemon alone, but discovered it was following her all the while pretending not to do so. It was a bit of a game, and the frigibax even stayed at the outskirts of town as she battled the gym leader and rested the night. It then followed her again as she traveled down the side of the mountain, offering the pokemon snacks whenever she took a break. At the base of the mountain, she asked the little dragon to battle, declaring that if she won, the dragon would have to come with her. The little dragon put up quite the fight, but Freya won.
She had a grumpy little baby dragon in tow from that day forth.
While a student, she caught many pokemon and was even gifted pokemon from friends—some of which included the starters that were given to students who did not have one of their own when they arrived at the Academy.
Shortly after finishing the gym trials and becoming a champion trainer, she graduated and decided to dedicate herself to the study of myths. To pursue her Treasure. A Treasure she had not fully realized as a student. Paldea’s own rich culture with the Violet/Scarlet Book and the Beasts of Ruin kept her occupied as a student, but home called her. So she returned to Kitakami for a time. She spent a year back in the village and realized that it wasn’t really her home anymore. She felt…like an outsider.
In an attempt to sort out these feelings, she explored the land as she did as a youth, and even wandered the cave she fell in as a child. She never did see the milotic that saved her, but she did catch a young Gyarados that decided to try to take a bite of her there in the pool. As much as she wanted to stay and sort out these feelings, she decided that maybe it was time for a true fresh start. To have a journey as a realized trainer and discover herself as an adult. So to Johto she went, buying a plane ticket to her father’s homeland—one that was rich with culture and stories. It was also there that she might be able to redeem her family name by proving her worth at the Den.
As she prepared to leave, she entrusted most of her pokemon to her family to watch over. A fresh start meant leaving the past behind. But her family insisted that she took some with her, to realize that there were still some old promises that needed to be fulfilled. So with her came her little frigibax friend, her childhood pet (now an arcanine), her recently caught gyarados, and a few others that she had been gifted by friends but never had a chance to train up.
Needing a place to stay when she arrived, she did some research and discovered a ranch owned by a pokemon breeder that needed some work and was offering free boarding in return.
When she arrived, she managed to befriend the busy and grumpy owner,, and eagerly agreed to help him train them as part of her ‘dues’. One of the resident pokemon, Star, a clefable, took to her so strongly on first meeting that Adrian allowed Freya to keep her as a companion. Perhaps it was fate that she ended up at that ranch. After all, if it wasn’t for a clefairy, she might not have ended up on this journey of hers at all.
