"A suspicious person has been seen wandering the route between New Bark and Cherrygrove for weeks...possibly months...and has been sighted interacting with children. Investigate if there is a link between this person and reports of a missing child in the area."
Adrian hummed at this latest assignment, more than a little concerned. If they had a child kidnapper just hanging around the route where young new trainers started out their journey, then that was cause for serious alarm. Adrian rode out that evening for his patrol on the back of his arcanine, bidding the large hound to sniff out any people and take him to them so he could check on them.
He would wave to any youngsters he passed, his police badge gleaming on the front of his jacket. While Adrian usually didn't flash his authority, when on patrol, he was supposed to make himself visible to the public. Reassure them he was out here to keep folks safe.
Eventually, the arcanine wuffed and lead him a little off the path towards some trees and the shape of a grown man. Adrian sat upright. This could be their person. He slid off the fire-type's back and approached carefully...only to squint a bit in surprise.
Wait. He knew that suspicious person!
"Raiden?"

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
TAG PixelNOTES - here we go! The last couple of days had spent leveling up a few new pokemon that had been added to his team. Though his main Pokemon had been more than high enough Raiden was nothing if not dedicated to making sure that everyone currently on his team was up to snuff. Perhaps it was backward thinking to some people but it wasn't easy to get out of old habits and this was one of Raiden's. As much as he could train quicker in Cherrygrove there was something about being able to let the pokemon learn to fight from the ground up with the weaker pokemon here. So he had, begrudgingly, been on the route between New Bark Town and Cherrygrove a lot more than what could be considered "normal".
Taking into account that he didn't talk to people and seemed to be more than content to be left alone it gave people plenty of things to be concerned about. Not to mention the fact that recently a young girl had been making it her mission to come and talk to Raiden whenever she could. It was not a good sight that the only person that he was ever around was a young girl who was ten years younger than him, but he hadn't expected people to be in his business. Perhaps this region was making him soft, he should always expect the worst, but it was hard to do that when nothing terrible had happened.
The trainer had just finished a round of training with one of his newest additions, Swablu, the pokemon landed gently on his shoulder and he offered her a few treats which she took gratefully. Though some things didn't change no matter where he was and it was that sixth sense. Someone was behind him, but as much as he pretended to ignore them unless they caused him trouble first he had no intention of interacting until -
Raiden?
A brow is raised as the convict turns his head golden eyes looking to the person who had called him by name. There were only a few people in this region that knew it. It would be impossible to forget Adrian, considering how badly they had butted heads at first but he wouldn't say they parted on bad terms by any means. What he didn't expect was to see him again, at least not here. His eyes instead shift to the large dog Pokemon that he had come on and for a moment he stops in his initial investigation missing a critical piece of information.
"It's been a while, seems you've been busy." he offers in greeting finally turning his body completely to face the other. His thoughts should have continued, wondered what he could have been out here for, but for now they did not. He did not suspect this person of anything foul and did not let himself be worried.
Perhaps that was his biggest mistake.

"It's been a while, seems you've been busy."
That was most certainly Raiden's voice. His face. His posture. Adrian almost smiled in relief. Surely this wasn't his suspicious person, but he couldn't dismiss Raiden out of familiarity. Adrian had a job to do. He moved closer, the metallic glint of his badge catching in the moonlight. Plastered on his chest was the symbol of the very thing Raiden wanted to avoid. And it was on someone he would be fairly certain wasn't part of that organization when they met about six months prior.
"It has been," Adrian said, hands at his hips, thumbs in his pockets, though the gesture might bring Raiden's eyes down to the heavy belt at his waist. A taser on one hip. Cuffs on the other. A walkie talkie in easy grabbing distance. "Wasn't expecting to cross paths with you here of all places." He cleared his throat a bit. "You, uh, putting that survival course to good use or training?" C'mon man. You have a script. He straightened up, shoulders back. "You...see anyone suspicious...talking to small children?" That meet your description to a tee. Because he had a report for a missing child.
Why did it have to be you he found out here?
"I'm talking to everyone out here tonight. I'm on patrol. Joined the police force recently. Bike patrol." The unit that reacted quickly and was most visible to people. Though...he obviously lacked a bike.

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
TAG PixelNOTES - why did you have to go and ruin a perfectly normal relationship He was comfortable. That was something that Raiden didn't think that he would ever be again, not after everything that happened. Raiden should know better, know that everything could be turned against you, after all - those that were supposed to protect one another had been the same that had ruined his life back in Orre. Innocent people had been hurt and his family, his friends, he had no idea where they were now. People who had probably ruined their lives to help him, it was a heavy burden that he still carried, but maybe he had forgotten the reason he had come here in the first place.
As the familiar face of Adrian moved closer however there was only so much a first glance could stop him from seeing. Whether it was the obvious badge on his chest or the way his posture caused golden orbs to follow, and all the items on his belt. Alarm bells immediately began ringing in his mind. The last time that Raiden had met Adrian he was not a cop, and now here was meeting him again and the one person he could consider something even close to a friend was now the thing Raiden could not afford to be anywhere near.
Life friggin' sucked.
Though there is a brief surprise in his eyes at the realization he knows better than to give visible signs of his worry. He doesn't let himself stiffen up as much as he wants to. How ironic that the one person that he lets his guard down around could very well be the same one that arrests him tonight for a crime he didn't even commit. For what it is the conversation that comes from Adrian is normal, and as much as he wants to - he can't unsee the damage that has already been done. He is no longer comfortable with Adrian, he's no longer someone he wouldn't mind seeing. It isn't easy anymore and Raiden now has far too many thoughts and his words are forced easygoing instead of just being cause he could moments prior.
"It is an unlikely crossing." he comments in turn, and there is a part of him that screams. Why is it you? A part of him wished he had never found him here at all so they wouldn't have to go through this motion and Raiden could have been content never knowing that Adrian had become a cop. Ah right, they had met because he had gotten them lost and they had worked out of it together - Raiden recalled mentioning very little back then but enough. How he could read the stars to make maps, to help with navigation. "It was useful for being on the road, but I haven't gotten lost." It's simple, what is expected but he finds his answers slightly clipped but he thanks Arceus that Adrian probably doesn't know him that well to tell the difference.
Yet it is the rest that causes more unrest, how his back straightens and the words that come next. A suspicious person. Ha, by all accounts that's him. How much of a hero would he be if he brought him in? A cross-region runaway that broke out of prison, Raiden suddenly feels very tired, he had forgotten that burden temporarily but it weighs heavy again on him. As much as he is tired of such a thing he can not quit now, not when he has so many lives depending on him. Not even when the person questioning him was the first person he let in even a little bit.
If it had been simple his explanation would have made Raiden say something about it not looking like he had a bike for the bike patrol but he couldn't manage to make himself say it. It's hard to pretend. He had gotten soft, he couldn't let himself be like this, not if he was going to do what he came here to do. "I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary." he says and for his sake, Raiden does think about it, because this does give him an opening since he had practically told him why he was here. It gave him some room to breathe that he didn't know about Raiden, and he didn't plan on it ever getting out.
Yet a thought comes to his memory, a day or two ago when Daisy had first shown up. Could that be connected? A frown moves over his face as he moves a hand to his mouth as he thinks about it. "Did you get any more information? I've been in this area a few days training some Pokemon a few days ago I was asked to help build a snow Pikachu not far from Elm's office. The requester was a little girl named Daisy. Children are impossible to say no to, but it wasn't just myself another trainer showed up and helped. " he let his hand fall back to his side as Swablu ruffled her feathers on Raiden's shoulder.
There is an unspoken sentence here as he looks back to the cop that seems so far away from him now, like the distance between them had increased both metaphorically and physically. It wasn't that hard to connect the dots, especially not with the information Raiden had freely provided.
It wouldn't be hard to see him as his suspect.

It would be so easy to call Raiden their suspect and bring him in for questioning on the missing child case. But that would be both unfair and lazy on Adrian's part. Especially when he personally knew what it was like to be on the wrong side of the law. Not as far as Raiden—he was never in jail with warrants for his arrest—but he had been so darn close before he was slapped out of his downward spiral by the one opportunity fate gave him to rethink his life. Adrian saw a man die. Saw the end result of his own life's trajectory if he kept on his path.
As much as life sucked, he didn't want to die.
He didn't even know it until that moment.
Living in a haze of questionable choices and petty crimes, smoking cigarettes to chase away the numb chill in his chest where his heart should have beat—as far as he'd been concerned, he was living a hollow half-life and the world would be better without him in it. Not like anyone except his mother ever cared. At least the booze and other substances distracted from the worthless misery of it all.
But seeing that man dead...it woke him up. It made him stumble off the path he'd been shambling along like a zombie and he clumsily got clean. Got work. Became a better human who wanted...needed...purpose in his life.
Adrian of all people knew better than to judge. Especially when he met Raiden before. Who while irritating, wasn't a bad person. He was kind to his pokemon. He was kind in his own way to a stranger. But even good people could do terrible things. He just had to hope...
"I only have the tips. We aren't even sure if the missing child is related to another report I was sent to investigate. You, uh...said you were here for a few days?" Pause. "Got a report for a suspicious person that says we're looking for someone, oh, your size and looks, but has been skulking about for weeks. Possibly months. Not the days you've said you've been here." Or Nancy McNosy was exaggerating again and just didn't like seeing an adult training on the rookie route. "And the missing child is a boy. Not a girl named Daisy. He went missing about three days ago. Did you see someone about this tall—" Adrian launched into a description of the missing little boy from Cherrygrove. "We're checking out this route and north towards Violet in search of clues. He is old enough to be a trainer."
So it was possibly a runaway case rather than a kidnapping. But they were still gathering details.
"So, uh...how have you been? The swablu's new. They're...fluffy."

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
TAG PixelNOTES - I have feelings and i hate it here i don't They had so many similarities, so many things that they could talk about on a personal level. Raiden was afraid of the world, of people, for good reasons. They had caused more harm than good, and in its funny messed up way he didn't hate them. Raiden had never hated people, he had once trusted them and believed that he was doing the right thing. Orre had a terrible reputation as it was and you couldn't go a few steps without someone attempting to mug you for something. So it was hard not to be in one group or the other but Raiden had the best intentions of getting them out of that name. Of actually helping people, and then well - the rest was history.
The thoughts and memories of such a thing still hurt to this day, he hated recalling it at all. He had come out here for a restart, a better life, one that his friends had granted him. Raiden had every intention of going back, but was that doing what they asked? What would it even do? No cop there would listen to him, he'd have to fight and wreck the place and wasn't that just falling back into the same pattern that he had tried to get away from? It was too complicated to think about and he could feel a headache coming on. He wished hard decisions were easier, but it seemed he was destined for every roadblock that crossed his path at this point.
Any moment now he was sure that Adrian was going to arrest him, take him in for questioning. Why wouldn't he? Every person was the same - he should have known that. Falling for the same thing over and over again, it seemed he couldn't learn his lesson. It would be easy to add kidnapping to the list, he had been sighted with a child, and looked the part of a criminal, truly why did he even bother? He might as well have signed the warrant himself admitting what had happened with Daisy. He hoped the child would be okay, would she come look for him if he wasn't here? He'd hate for her to find out he had been arrested, it seemed unnecessary to cause a child that kind of pain. Maybe he would ask Adrian to tell her he had to move on so she wouldn't worry. Sigh. He needed to stop worrying about others, this was the reason he was in this mess.
A frustrated and annoyed sigh, not with Adrian, but with the situation. "I've been in the area six days give or take. Some before that, but I like hand-raising Pokemon so they get used to battles. It's easiest to do that here, so it's possible I was seen leaving and coming back in the area." he needed to learn to keep his mouth shut, but it was easy to talk with Adrian, a problem he would need to curb. Not that it mattered if he got arrested here he had already verbally given anything he needed to take him. Yet, for the first time, someone didn't take the easy route - no cuffs are pulled, no betrayal stings on his chest.
This time he can't stop the surprise, it's easy to tell by the dumbfounded look on his face. Adrian easily tells him that the child missing is a boy so the person he's looking for could not have been Raiden. Raiden tried hard to pay attention to the details that he was given but he was sure his mind was in recoil. This wasn't how this story was supposed to go, there was no verse where he was not arrested. Yet, no matter how he looked at it, there wasn't one, Adrian even tried to small talk again seemed some things didn't change - he was still awful at it.
"I'll keep an eye out if I see anything suspicious, though I hate to tell you I probably won't be calling for help. If it's that serious and it's been that long every moment counts. If someone is in danger I'll probably take care of it myself." he wasn't a hero, and never would be, but Raiden wasn't heartless and if someone needed help he would probably help and then most likely walk away. He didn't want to play hero, he didn't want rewards or recognition, he just wanted to get through the motions one day at a time. After being serious for a moment he lets out a held breath and a far more casual smirk forms at the edge of his features.
"Never thought you'd end up a goody two-shoes cop though, especially one without a bike when he's supposed to be a bike patrol was it?" it was all in good fun, but it was still restrained. There was still a worry that this could change, that he would get too deep and not be able to come back. Raiden knew that in the end, he couldn't trust Adrian anymore, if he ever did then he could end up doing something that both of them would regret. Giving him some wiggle room though he glances at the bird who seems quite confused from the entire situation.
"She just hatched from an egg not that long ago. I always wanted one, so I guess I got lucky." Ah, he wasn't supposed to share personal stuff - and here he was about to talk about his mom. One thing was clear, he needed to keep the heck away from Adrain if he wanted to keep his secrets.

"I like to hand raise my pokemon too. Though, I've gotten impatient a time or two and gotten myself out of depth when training in an area with pokemon too low level for it." Adrian admitted, rubbing the back of his head, his posture a little less stiff. A little more familiar. A little more of the awkward, uncertain Adrian who didn't know how to person and used gruffness to cover his nerves. Last time they met, Adrian was embarrassed and frustrated, so he'd snapped at Raiden quite a bit. But now? He wasn't moodily throwing his verbal weight around to get Raiden to 'mind his own business'.
He did reach for something on his belt, but not his cuffs. Instead it was a notepad that he flipped open and started writing in.
"Makes sense. New Bark has some of the lowest level pokemon around, so if you have a handful of recently hatched pokemon, I could see why you'd be hanging around here until they're a little stronger. Though I would recommend an experience share if you don't have one already. They're really useful. Since I breed pokemon, training them up from low levels is just part and parcel with the gig." He looked up from his notepad. Watched Raiden for a moment. "...I get that. Wanting to take care of an issue yourself because it feels like getting help will just...take too long. Like you can't depend on anyone but yourself."
He chuckled softly, "It's one of the reasons why i didn't think I'd be a cop. Amongst others. I just...saw someone who needed help, so i helped. I acted without thinking about who or why, and that person happened to be an officer. They...extended a recommendation to me. Here I am. Helping people. I think." He stopped writing. Grimaced. "However, it's still government work. Which means there are budgets and apparently bikes weren't in said budget. So I was stuck on foot until I evolved Heimdal here. He's been a big help. Police work suits him." he patted the arcanine's shoulder, who boofed before padding up to Raiden and snuffling the swablu. FLUFFY!
"Bud, I don't think the baby wants to be your friend. Even if you've befriended plenty of newly hatched pokemon, not every one wants to be sniffed and licked." —

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
TAG PixelNOTES - I'm keeping him Adrian is now being held forever The admittance is probably not an easy one to make, Raiden knew if it was him he would not so easily admit his faults. So he has respect for Adrian that way, there were a lot of things about him that he was fond of. Especially the fact that he hadn't changed and was awkward as ever. It meant he was being real, and that was something that Raiden couldn't say for a lot of people. "I'm sure I don't need to tell you to make sure you're careful. Though it looks to me you made it out just fine. You had some good Pokemon to help with that last time we met." he remembered them, the ones that he had met. Raiden was sure he would be just fine.
There is a moment where he stiffens up just a slight bit when he sees him reach for his belt but it is quickly released when he grabs his pad. Honestly, he needed to calm down or he was going to give himself away. It was more than fair to write down notes that Raiden had given him. As he gives him a tip Raiden can't help but give a small smile. He lets the "officer" continue his speech before he moves to grab the exact item that the other had been talking about. "I picked one up not too long ago, it's been helping with her training when she's still too small to do much herself." he said putting it back where it had come from. The one part however was something he didn't know and was interesting.
"So you hit me with two new things, first, you're a cop and now you're a breeder. How do you have time for everything." It was mostly a joke, but somewhat serious. Raiden was too busy with his specialized team, so he hadn't really picked up many Pokemon, but he really should be doing a little more just in case his team didn't work. Though his response to his comment about handling it himself seemed like there was something more behind it Raiden wouldn't ask. He didn't want Adrian in his business so he wouldn't try to snoop in his. He seemed to answer on his own and Raiden listened and it put the pieces together.
"If I was in the situation I probably would have done the same." he offers before holding up a finger. "Up to the point of being offered a recommendation. Me and being an officer don't click. Besides you'd have someone every day reporting someone who stole an officer's uniform. I don't look the part." he tries to cover truths with jokes, but the fact is that it is true. Not with the background checks and everything else, he would be caught for sure and he couldn't go back to Orre, not yet anyway.
"Seems like everything worked out for you." it wasn't something for him, but Adrian seemed mostly okay with it. At the rather large canine's curiosity, a small chirp comes from the bird as she leaves her trainer's shoulder to perch herself in the flood of the dog's head instead. Raiden crossed his arms over his chest at the sight. "Traitor." It is light and not angry in the slightest and there is an almost immediate chirp of confirmation because they were both fluffy and doggo was warm! "Quite the opposite it seems, if she doesn't come back I'm blaming you." he said glancing to Adrian.

"Oh, uh, yeah, I was a breeder even when we met back a few months ago. It just...didn't come up," Adrian shrugged. "Though I guess I was just starting out. My business is doing well. The police thing is...a lot more new. Time sorts itself out honestly. Not like the patrol thing is a full time gig. Best I have another source of income anyway."
Adrian looked down at himself, "Honestly didn't think I did either, but nobody has run away screaming yet." Shrug. He didn't exactly look like a cop, but he also didn't look like a hooligan when on duty either—hair brushed back, his furrowed brow replaced by attempts at smiling. "You might have a harder time, I'll admit."
Heimdal boofed again, very pleased that the swablu had decided to be his friend. Tail wags. He did a happy puppy dance which looked rather silly on the massive hound. Adrian put away the pad and smiled rather genuinely as he turned his attention to the pokemon. He shook his head.
"She's a delight. I'll just have to get one for myself one day so he can have a bird friend. There was a winter festival going on that I passed by recently that looked like it had some odd 'festive' varieties of pokemon. There were swablus there. They almost looked like plush toys..." He didn't stop to gawk though. No time.
The arcanine pranced some more, happy to entertain the baby swablu.
"That reminds me. The combee I had then is now a vespiquen. Never did find any honey when she was a combee..." A bit off topic but Adrian seemingly had settled into conversation mode for the moment.

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
TAG PixelNOTES - Broship +2 Raiden wasn't surprised since they hadn't given too much information about themselves back then. He had come a long way, and Raiden could see that was probably true, he did look better than he had before. It was a reminder that Raiden was far behind, that he would need to catch up - or at least do everything in his power to do that. He couldn't be stuck here forever and perhaps this was the kick to make him finally do just that. "I may need to get a job soon, probably just odd jobs here and there." he had no intention of getting a full job.
When he said that no one had run screaming there was a moment when the thought crossed his mind to do just that. "I don't have my shrill scream down yet, so I can't give you the pleasure. " ah he was back to that picking part of his brain, just on the border of playful and snarky. "And you never will see it." There wasn't even the smallest chance, he wouldn't risk it, he couldn't or he would get caught. That was not on his plans so no thank you, he'll pass for today. It was easy to relax even slightly watching the Pokemon as they enjoyed each other's company.
"I saw that, but I wanted the original thing." he admits. Maybe he was a stickler but some people were just like this and this was one of Raiden's. "I hope you get what you're looking for though, it seems your pup could use the entertainment." he said with a laugh. The swablu was more than happy to hold on as the large pup did its dance acting much like a puppy in its ways which made them the perfect duo. She couldn't be more happy to play along, maybe she would grow out of it when she got older but Raiden wasn't in a rush to change her.
A brow raises at Adrian's thought process and a semblance of a chuckle may have passed from his mouth. If he tried to challenge him on laughing Raiden would definitely deny it. "Isn't that the whole point of owning a Combee? You must be unlucky, well with that. Don't you always talk about winning raffles and giveaways?" he mentioned. Not like Raiden could talk considering how full his bag was right now but he didn't need to know that.

"No shrill screaming? Pity. And here I was hoping to hear a demonstration. Whatever will I do?" Adrian deadpanned to keep up the lighter edge to the conversation. He ruffled his own hair and listened to Raiden, smothering a bit of laughter of his own with a cough. "Yeah, yeah. I'll have to get another combee or a different honey gather pokemon in the future to see if I can actually find some honey. I hear there's trees in Ilex that you can slather honey on and find pokemon. Thought I'd test it out...except well..." Shrug. No honey from his honey gathering pokemon.
He patted Heimdal's side as the arcanine played like a puppy with his new bird friend. He watched as the hound started to trot around and gently trying to toss the bird into the air by thrashing his head. Throw and catch! That was the game. His tail wagged relentlessly.
Then Raiden brought up the raffles and he groaned, "I'm not /that/ lucky in those damn raffles...Mostly a lotta odds and ends. X-Items. That one time I won a safari trip was the only big ticket item I won. Wanted to win the bike on the wall but..." Clearly...it didn't happen...and clearly, Raiden was the one who won the bike. He cocked a brow at the man. "It seems like someone else won first." —

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.
Raiden truly can't help it, even with the knowledge he knows know there is something about Adrian that makes him not hate him. He knew he should have left the moment he found out what he was, at least as non-suspiciously as possible, but the little back and forth was something he didn't get often. So if there had been a small semblance of a smirk before it changed to a full-blown grin at the reply of the other. "So terribly sorry to disappoint, I'll be sure to work on it for next time." A small laugh follows the sentence. He would not ever be able to scream like a little girl, but the attempt would be worth it on a future occasion. Or he would have to get a Pokemon that mimicked the sound and do it to him later.
The second part has him thinking, has Adrian really gotten all the way out to Ilex? Raiden knew a little about the region but not much considering this was his first time here. He had just been so focused on getting what he wanted he hadn't gone all that far. Probably one of the reasons he was in this mess, to begin with, but it seemed that Adrian had been busy during Raiden's leveling. "I'll have to keep that in mind when I get to Ilex, though seeing how it went for you maybe I should just buy some honey from someone instead." small jab, nothing less. He didn't wish Adrian any ill will, he hadn't incited that kind of ire from Raiden.
The Swablu seemed more than happy to play with the oversized puppy. As his head tossed the Pokemon she would chirp and flap those fluffy wings to keep some air before letting herself 'fall' to be caught by the arcanine once more. It was exciting! She was having more fun than she had in quite some time. Though she had just hatched recently so it wasn't like she had time to experience a lot yet. <"Again!"> It seemed she was quite distracted with the entire concept while the two trainers were exchanging pleasantries.
Raiden can't help the brow raise at the other when he seems frustrated with the mention of the raffles. "I don't know, I think I've seen more than a few things from those winnings." he commented but it seemed that Adrian was going for the kill and Raiden was perfectly in shooting range. Another smirk at the corner of his features at the shot he couldn't help himself. "Seems you have someone to contest in them." he joked before shrugging his shoulders. "It's probably the highest item I've won, but I did get a trip to the safari as well, I still have a ticket in my bag somewhere I'm pretty sure." he had too many things that had been sent.
"I haven't gotten a chance to look through all the stuff. I just send in the tickets and if I get something I toss it in my bag. I planned to look, but I just haven't had time to dedicate to it. Though some things were bigger than others, case and point the bike." he had been using that a lot and was grateful for the win. "Won't lie and say that it hasn't been useful, but I'm sure they'll probably raffle another one soon, if they do you won't have me to compete with at least." he said with a small chuckle.
