Dig In!
After dinner was made, Crissy distributed the bowls to the Pokémon with a cheerful, “Dig in!” as Teddy began to clean up the cookware. Once dinner was devoured and the camp duties were all complete, the group got settled in for the evening, relaxing around the campfire. Teddy hoped it was okay for them to have made a fire. He wasn’t even sure it was legal for them to be camping like they were in the town’s park, but he figured worst-case they could just pack up and move if needed. Citing a need to resupply at the Pokémart, Teddy stood up, stretched, and then grabbed two Pokéballs. “You can never be too careful,” he said, nodding at Crissy, before Charlie and Dizzy were returned to their balls. Surely there’s no Team Rocket activity in a nice town like this though… he thought to himself. But regardless, he left his remaining Pokémon behind to play with Anya, and to protect Crissy just in case anything happened while he was gone.
He did make a quick stop at the Pokémart, but that wasn’t the true reason that Teddy had decided to go for a walk this evening. He pulled out the two Pokéballs he had taken with him, and holding one in each hand he pressed the buttons simultaneously, waiting for Charlie and Dizzy to appear in front of him. The two looked up at him, and then at each other, before immediately beginning to squabble. Teddy had been about to speak, but instead he just shut his mouth and let out a frustrated sigh through his nose as he watched the pair argue. He sat down on a bench, a blank stare on his face as he waited for the two Pokémon to figure out their issue. Eventually, the argument seemed to reach a peak, and then it quieted, as both Pokémon let out a loud huff and turned away from each other, arms crossed. Chins held high and full of pride, they both gave Teddy a sideways stare, hoping that he would pick one as the winner of the debate. Instead, Teddy couldn’t help but let out a snorting laugh, before immediately regaining his composure and fighting to hold a stern look on his face.
“You two are ridiculous,” he said. There was a hint of unintentional laughter in his voice. He cleared his throat. “You two are ridiculous.” Sterner this time, hopefully that got the point across. The two Pokémon turned to look at him. Charlie looked equally as stern as his trainer; arms still crossed. He kept his eyes low, avoiding eye contact with Teddy, as he knew these petty antics weren’t going to win him any points. I’m your starter, we’ve been together since day one, of course I’m the strongest, he thought to himself arrogantly. Having inflated his own ego again, he looked up at his trainer, but held the stern expression. He let out a protesting, “Char,” that almost had a bit of a growl in it, as if to say "she started it."
Dizzy, on the other hand, was putting on a different act. Doing her best puppy dog eyes, she beamed up at Teddy innocently. Just let me show you how strong I am. Once you see me in action, you’ll know I’m your best! Her head bobbed as her body wobbled about, but her gaze remained fixed on her trainer, studying him carefully to see if her cutesy act was working. If it did, Teddy didn’t show it. He looked from one Pokémon to the other, his expression unchanging. “Look,” he said, his voice strict but emotionless. “I’ve had enough of this.” Dizzy put on her best puzzled, innocent face, while Charlie once again looked down in shame. “I don’t know what this is about. I don’t care either. We’re a team, and I need you two to start acting like it. If you don’t want to be part of a team…” He paused, his voice wavering with a bit of emotion, and sadness briefly flashed across his face before the stern gaze returned. “If you don’t want to be part of this team, you can just go.”
Charlie winced, letting out a pained, “Char…” There was no protest in his voice this time. Dizzy’s playful innocence melted away, revealing embarrassment, and she paused her wobbling for a moment. Teddy immediately regretted the words he had said, obviously he didn't actually want his Pokémon to leave. But the words were out there now, he couldn’t take it back. He shifted his gaze from one Pokémon to the other. The two stood still, staring at their feet, refusing to look at him or at each other. Teddy gazed out past his Pokémon, letting his words sink in. He noticed some movement at a house behind them; it looked like a person in a dark outfit was opening the window from outside the house. Huh, that’s a little odd, Teddy thought to himself. Then the figure began to climb into the window, and in doing so, Teddy could see a large red “R” on their shirt. Teddy didn’t even have time to think, but the adrenaline rush caused him to quickly stand up, his heart pounding. He looked around quickly for help, but didn’t see anyone, so he stepped past his Pokémon towards the house to try to get a better look. The window was still open, a breeze causing the curtains to flutter. It was dark inside, except for the beam of a flashlight frantically searching.
“Well, are you a part of this team or not?” Teddy asked, looking back towards Charlie and Dizzy as he continued to walk towards the house. They both snapped out of their shameful trance, and began to follow Teddy. Running side by side, they still refused to look at or acknowledge the existence of the other. Upon reaching the yard, a large crash echoed from within the house. Peering into the window, Teddy could see that the house had been ransacked, furniture destroyed and items thrown about in a wild search for something. All the lights in the neighboring houses turned on. One turned on the porch lights and Teddy could see the family looking out through the windows. At another house, a man stepped out the front door, on the phone with the police. Just seconds later, a siren blared in the distance.
“Hey!” Teddy screamed angrily through the window. Another crash, some loud footsteps, and then the beam of a flashlight waved around inside. The grunt appeared, a crate in their hands, which was tossed down onto the broken couch. The crook then turned towards Teddy, shining the bright flashlight in the boy’s face, clearly frustrated that their work had been disturbed. “Stay out of my way kid,” the grunt snarled, before turning back towards the crate. Teddy backed away from the window, blinking to regain his vision after being blinded by the flashlight. Taking a fighting stance in the yard, he snarled “Make me, you coward,” back at the goon. He was tired of Team Rocket taking advantage of others, and would put an end to this right now. He stood his ground as the shady figure emerged from the window.
