"This is so sudden..." Cole muttered to himself as he found himself walking alongside a small red lizard Pokemon with a flame on the tip of its tail while rubbing his gloved hands for warmth. He just arrived in New Bark Town after a day of travel from his flight from Unova, hoping he could get the starting Pokemon that was supposed to be available only in Johto. Yet he never expected to get one of the Pokemon from the Kanto region instead. He sighed as he stopped walking and stretched out his arms and back. "I only accepted you after learning about the circumstances from Professor Elm. But I'm surprised at the recent thefts in this town lately. I'm a bit concerned about his lab's security, but I guess there's nothing we can do now, huh?"

Cole crouched down and smiled at his new Pokemon. "Still, I'm lucky I got you as my first partner in Johto. It's my dream of getting a Charizard and I'm excited we get to train together in our journey. Plus, you remind me of my old starter Pokemon when I was attending Uva Academy in Paldea. So there's no way I can say no to your energetic personality." He stretched his hand out to his Charmander. "Let's make this more formal. Let's do our best to achieve our dreams together, Kagetchi."

"Char!" His Charmander cried out happily before accepting his handshake with both of his hands.

"Alright. Let's get through the first route of our journey and head to the next town by nightfall. Just for today, you're traveling with me. Are you ready?" Kagetchi cried again and to Cole's surprise, he charged towards the entrance of Route 29. "Hey, wait up! I didn't mean we're splitting up!"

The Unovan trainer then chased his Charmander out of New Bark Town and into Route 29.

As they raced through the town towards the route that leads to Cherrygrove, they came past a jobboard. A large board with notes on them for trainers and the like to take a quick job if they felt like it. On top was a note with big bold letters that would be hard to ignore even if they ran past with the focus on something else, it was made to catch the attention of passerbys.
If Colby paused and took a closer look, he would see different kinds of job offerings, the warning from the police could be called an offering if he chose to ignore the warning and go look for the poacher himself. He could take any he found interesting or leave them if he didn't want to.

No matter if he took a job or two or not, they would spot their first wild pokemon right outside of New Bark Town. Actually they would spot more than one as a little flock of sentrets were rummaging around in the melting snow on the hunt of something edible. Closest to the road, on a big rock a lone sentret was standing guard, raised high on its tail, its whiskers quivering it looked around to spot any dangers to its family. It was there to warn them and to buy them time to get away, should something dangerous appear.
It froze when it spotted Colby and it watched him intently to see if he moved any closer, if he did it would call out a warning and its flock would scurry off while it tried to look as big and menacing as it could to scare the trainer and his pokemon off.

"Gotcha!" The young trainer quickly grabbed his Charmander before he could step outside town. "Geez... The professor wasn't kidding about your attention span. You're lucky I chose you because you have the fiery spirit I'm looking for."

Cole sighed as he gingerly stroked his Pokemon's head. When he first got his Charmander, Professor Elm mentioned that this one was a bit of a prankster. Not only did he have a habit of wandering around without Elm's permission, but he was a daredevil when it came to battles to the point he might challenge other Pokemon without the professor's consent. While he was starting to understand his frustrations, it was the reason why he chose Kagetchi. Recalling those reasons, he sighed as he started carrying his Fire-type starter in his arms.

But when he was leaving New Bark, he noticed some kind of bulletin board nearby. When he took a closer look, he gasped to see a variety of jobs and requests posted there, one of them seemed to pique his interest. "A Pokemon Hunter... I heard they are hunters poaching rare and endangered Pokemon from their habitats," Cole groaned. "Man, they are the worst kind of poachers. I might have no luck facing them if I encounter them. On the other hand, I can't just leave those snares alone. What do you think, Kagetchi?"

"Char..." His Pokemon stared at the request for a while. "Charawr!"

"You want to deal with them, huh?" Cole grabbed the request. "We might get over our heads here, but we might as well try protecting the innocent wild Pokemon in Route 29.."

With his first job decided, he headed off as he let his Charmander go to walk alongside him.

Almost an hour has passed since they left New Bark Town and their journey was briefly interrupted when they encountered a flock of Sentret. One of them seemed to be on a lookout and it didn't take long to notice the pair of a trainer and Pokemon nearby. On one hand, Cole wanted to battle that Sentret for his first battle. On the other, he doubted he needed a Sentret in his team and it might be rude to battle them. It was there to protect the flock after all.

"Come on, Kagetchi. Let's go the other way. We don't want to..." He turned around and noticed his Charmander was gone from his side. "Huh?! Kagetchi?!" Just as he tried to find his missing Pokemon, he looked up and gasped to see him charging in with his claws out. "Wait, Kagetchi! Don't...!"

The sentret's attempts to scare off the trainer and his pokemon didn't seem to work, in fact quite the opposite as the charmander came rushing straight at it. "B-back off! I'm not going to give up!" It shouted as confidently as it could, with a shaking voice. It was not normal for a sentret to step up like this, but things had been scarier than normal, weird things had happened which did not happen usually and it had done what was needed to try protect and calm its flock.

It swallowed hard and then jumped down from the rock to meet the charging charmander, only for it to slip, flail around as it tried to catch its balance and fail miserably, it landed right at Kagetchi's feet and as his claws rained down over it, it curled up in protection.

It wasn't scared or giving up though, it just prepared for a longer battle now it had gotten a bit unlucky start.
"You'll regret it!" It came muffled from it, "I will not let you get to my family, besides, you are not half as scary as the human vines and holes which hurt much more than you!" it challenged strangely, still muffled from being curled up. Sounded like it might know a thing or two about those traps which Colby wanted to investigate.

Cole groaned once he witnessed his Charmander's Scratch hit. Thanks to his reckless ambush, he knew a battle was inevitable. He didn't want to knock out the poor Sentret because of this, but how could he reason with an angry Pokemon? But he recalled that it protected its kind before Kagetchi's recklessness kicked in. Plus, instead of retaliating, the Normal-type Pokemon used Defense Curl while pleading to them about something. Unfortunately, Cole couldn't speak Pokemon. But he knew something was up behind its strange behavior and he needed to stop his Charmander first as it was about to spew out Ember.

"Okay, you little troublemaker. Stand down or no berries for tonight." Hearing this, his Charmander stopped his Ember attack. "I don't think that Sentret is looking for a fight. Can you apologize and ask what's going on?"

Kagetchi frowned that he didn't have a chance to battle. But his trainer was right. Something was up and he didn't feel any battling spirit from the Sentret. Surely, there was a reason why. He slowly approached the wild Pokemon and cried in Pokemon speak. "Sorry for attacking you. But what do you mean "human vines and holes"? Can you show us where?"

(OOC: Gonna go with your suggested plot idea? I'm interested in introducing Cole's Sprigatito as a trapped Pokemon.)

Sentret glared at the strange flame-tailed Pokemon, though they were common sights to see with their humans walking beside them. They were just not common to see in the wild. Were they only owned Pokemon, never knowing what it was like to have to fight for every scrap of food that came your way? “There was a big plate of food placed on the ground. In a flat tree stump, like really flat and round. Never seen anything quite like it.” Sentret explained, using its arms to shape the wooden human plate that had food sitting inside of it.

It was hard to trust this Charmander, though. That other human that carried those harsh vines also had his own Pokemon with him. They were mean bullies who thrived on seeing others in pain. “I ran over to the plate and you wouldn’t believe the types of berries it had. Oran – as many oran as you could ever dream of – and tons of Leppa and Sitrus! So I started eating my fill, as a Pokemon naturally would.” Sentret’s face dropped for a second as it’s eyes widened in fear and terror. It curled its body up tight in defense, creating a glossy shield along its body that would make it harder to penetrate through with an attack.

“Then the mean human. He whipped me and whipped me. I squeaked and screamed and tried to run. But he only laughed and sent his mean old Pokemon to chase after me. ‘Dispose of that useless Sentret’ I heard him say. ‘It’s not valuable and rare and won’t fetch me nothing.” Sentret shuddered, folding its long ears against the sides of its head and shook it head firmly. “Trust me, no one is strong enough to take him on! Please…I don’t want to go back.” Then paused, and reluctantly thought about it. “…If…if you can prove you’re strong enough to protect me and yourself…I’ll show you the way. Ok?”

Kagetchi wasn't much of a patient Pokemon. That was one fact his trainer already knew in his first impression. However, the more he heard Sentret's story about the poacher, the more he got invested in it. At the same time, he grew incensed at how that human treated the poor wild Pokemon like that. He would have spewed out Ember if it wasn't for his trainer observing their conversation.

"That human saying nonsense! We only just met, but I know you're not useless!" Kagetchi exclaimed. "I'm gonna burn that human if he says the same about me and Cole!" Then when Sentret suggested he could prove his strength in a battle, Kagetchi's eyes perked up. "I am strong with Cole by my side! If you want proof, then I'll show you!"

Meanwhile, Cole was watching two Pokemon chatting with each other despite he couldn't speak Pokemon. "Uh... So what did it say, Kagetchi?" He sheepishly asked his Charmander.

"Char! Char!" Kagetchi turned to his trainer and started drawing doodles depicting Sentret's story on the snowy ground. While it was a bit poor in terms of quality, Cole slowly understood what his Pokemon was trying to say. "Char, char, char?!"

"I get the whole gist of its situation, I think. I guess the only way to proceed is to prove ourselves," Cole guessed. "Alright, Kagetchi. Let's show them our strength. But don't go too far, okay?"

"Char, char!"

They turned to the Sentret, now determined on what to do next. "We accept your challenge, Sentret! Kagetchi, use Ember!" His Charmander lept up and spewed out small flames at Sentret.

Even though the wild rodent looked really scared and sad just a moment ago, the energy and positivity of the trainer seemed to cause a change in the normal type. Ears propped back up and back straight, it seemed more eager to do battle against this Pokemon. Maybe, just maybe he had finally found a friend?

The Charmander was much faster than the Sentret and as the fire boiled in the lizard's mouth, Sentret tried to decide what to do. The embers were sent forward and the mammal Pokemon instinctively rolled up into a protective ball. However, the Sentret seemed to forget that while rolling into a ball can be helpful sometimes, it didn't help when you were being lit on fire. After the barrage of embers, the Sentret was hopping from side to side, trying to check and see if the scorch marks were superficial or if it was actually burned beneath the top layer of fur.

<Ah, ah, that's hot! Rude!> it called, before flopping down into the snow.

Cole was surprised. This was his first Pokemon battle with Kagetchi, but he was surprised at how strong his Ember was compared to his Fuecoco. Just seeing the burns on Sentret's fur made him worried about its well-being. As for Kagetchi, he was happy to see his first attack ordered by his new trainer hit. Although he wasn't happy at the comment it accidentally let out. "Hey! I'm not rude! I'm strong!"

The young trainer tilted his head upon seeing his Charmander cried out in frustration. Then again, it took some sustainable damage from Kagetchi's Ember. He had a feeling the wild Normal-type Pokemon wouldn't give up easily. "Let's finish this up with Scratch!"

As his Charmander charged in with his claws again, Cole recalled that it used Defense Curl a few times before the 3rd. While he didn't want to knock out the Sentret so it could use its remaining strength to protect its kind, he needed to end this fight sooner than later. Regardless if Sentret survive Kagetchi's attack or not, Cole calmly approached the Sentret and said, "I think that should be enough to prove ourselves. Sorry that my Charmander has to go rough on you." His Fire-type cried his apology after being stopped by Cole.

"No, I am calling you rude for burning my furs! Thankfully it is cold outside, because I can put out the flames fast." The Sentret squeaked and huffed.

The fire lizard ran forward and struck the normal type with his claws, scratching the lookout Sentret unconscious as it lose balance and stamina, and fell on the soft, snowy ground. "Good Job..." It mumbled before passing out briefly.

If Cole would like to capture this Pokemon, it would be a good time now to pull out an empty Pokeball from his bag. If Cole didn't want to capture it, or capture it and then let it out, it would resume talking about these Pokemon Hunter. Once it got back up, it continued. "Okay, you've proven yourself!"

The Sentret hollered at another Sentret, which immediately flopped up its ears and stood on its tail, as the other Sentret swapped lookout role temporarily. Once that was settled, the Sentret began moving somewhere deeper in the route, a route normal trainers don't usually walk into. "Follow me!"

"Well, sorry!" The little Fire-type Pokemon cried out before he finished off the Normal-type with a strong Scratch. Cole gasped to see the damage Sentret took causing it to fly a few feet away from them. It only took Kagetchi to turn to see his trainer's glare at him that made him realize what he had done. "Uh... Whoops..."

Seeing this, Cole simply sighed in dismay before running up to the now-unconscious Sentret. "Okay, it's fine. But just in case..." He took out an empty Poke Ball from his bag. "I know they're not the Pokemon I'm expecting on my time, but it's not like I have a choice. It's either let them be and get away with a bit of guilt or help it to help us find the poacher." He tapped the ball on Sentret's head to absorb them. He waited for a few seconds as the Poke Ball shook three times before it clicked shut.

Nature/Personality: Known to be a Serious Sentret, Scout prides himself on his namesake and keeps an eye on his surroundings for the sake of his trainer and his Pokemon friends' safety. However, he does have a sweet tooth when it comes to snacks and berries.

After the capture, he tossed the ball, and out came the now-conscious Sentret, who declared Kagetchi and Cole to be worthy of his trust.

"Char, char!" Kagetchi proudly cried in confidence.

"Don't get too confident, Kagetchi. This is only the start." Cole bowed to the Sentret and said, "I apologize for that battle again. Lead us the way and we'll take care of the rest."

After a few minutes of following the Sentret into a route that didn't seem familiar to Cole, they arrived at what seemed to be a field teeming with traps and scattered leaves around their surroundings. "No way... I never saw so many traps before..."

"Char...!" His Charmander growled in anger at the sight of bear traps. He would have rushed in if he hadn't stepped on a pitfall before Cole grabbed him in time.

"Easy, Kagetchi. We need to be careful if we want to disarm them one by one." But as he looked around, Cole's eyes widened at the sight of two Pokemon not far from them. "Oh no..."

He slowly tip-toed around the traps as he tried to get closer to them. Once he took a better look at them, he saw not only a green cat Pokemon meowing as it tried to escape from the pitfall to no avail while the black and grey puppy whined with one of its legs trapped on a beartrap.

"I can't believe this. A Sprigatito in the Johto region?" He then took out his Pokedex and scanned the puppy Pokemon. "And a Poochyena. How could those poachers treat them like this?!" He rushed to the Poochyena's side and using most of his strength, he gingerly yank out the bear trap from the Poochyena without harming its leg further. Once it was completely freed, Cole gently hugged the Dark-type before it tried to bite his arm. "Hey, hey! Easy! You're free," he said to the Poochyena. "That nasty trap won't hurt you anymore."

Nature/Personality: A Timid Poochyena who hides an aggressive loyalty to his trainer, Vidar vows himself to protect Cole and his new friends from any danger around them.

The Poochyena continued to struggle in Cole's arms and managed to bite his arm. Yet Cole didn't flinch as he continued hugging the poor Pokemon. It didn't take long for him to realize his words were true and it didn't take long for him to calm down. Eventually, he turned to his Pokemon and the Sprigatito trapped in the pitfall. "All that's left is that poor Grass Cat Pokemon. Sentret, can you try to find some kind of vine for me to help me climb down and up?"

His Normal-type nodded before he headed off to follow his order for the sake of the poor Grass-type. Cole then turned to his Charmander next. "Kagetchi, keep an eye on Poochyena while I'll try to save the Sprigatito." Kagetchi nodded and he slowly approached the Dark-type Pokemon. At the same time, the Sentret came back with the vines and Cole calmly accepted them as he tied it up to a tree nearby and started climbing down in the pitfall where the Sprigatito was.

While Cole was busy climbing down into the pit and his Charmander was preoccupied with protecting and keeping an eye on the injured dark type, a presence could be felt in the bushes nearby. In fact, Cole or his Charmander might even feel the sense that they were being watched.

The unseen foe gave the Charmander enough of a berth that he would be able to do what he was planning on doing without alerting the fire lizard.
Suddenly, he burst from the bushes and attempted to cut the vine that was keeping the trainer off the ground in the pit, but he missed.
Sliding to a stop, the unseen foe was now in the open.

"How dare you destroy these traps. I caught these Pokemon, they are mine, fair and square.
Now, leave this instant before I have to hurt you," he said, holding up a poke ball.

A flash of light revealed a purple reptile, teeth gleaming in the sunlight.
"You don't want to mess with us, just get out of the hole, and go on your way." the ninja said, glaring at the trainer.

Cole could hear the meows from the poor Grass Cat Pokemon. He could tell it was in pain from the fall. And looking closely, it seemed like they had a collar that said: "For the Paldea Festival". He had a feeling that there was more to this trap-filled scenario than he thought. "Don't worry, little guy! I'm gonna get you out of there...'

Before he could finish, he heard another voice from above. A man's voice and he didn't sound friendly to his Pokemon. His suspicions were confirmed when he heard him say "he caught those Pokemon" despite the traps saying otherwise. He could also hear his Charmander growling in response, causing him to smile over the same sentiment he has right now. "And let you grab these Pokemon that you hurt with your traps, whips, and pitfalls?! If you want to catch wild Pokemon, then try using a Poke Ball!" He snarked. "Or better yet, try not stealing them from a festival!"

He quickly jumped down and gingerly carried the injured Sprigatito. He didn't know what the poacher sent out, so he knew who to send out to defend him and the captured Pokemon first. "Kagetchi, use Ember!"

While the Fire-type didn't see his trainer climbing up, he grinned that he finally have permission to kick the poacher and his Ekan's butt. Or rather, spew out flames to teach them a lesson.

"How is it /stealing/ when they are all the way out here? I am nowhere near the festival," the ninja countered. "This stretch of woods is my turf and I will catch whatever I like here, however I like. You are the trespasser and thief, not I." That said, the police would probably not agree with his assessment of the situation. Cole was right that pokemon were only supposed to be caught in pokeballs. "Ekans, take care of this nuisance before he destroys more of my traps."

The ekans hissed and glared, its stare sending a shiver down the charmander's spine. 

Intimidating...

Well, burning the snake from a distance seemed like the safest bet. So the charmander did just that, breathing hot flames at the snake between him and the ninja thief.

Cole was still stuck under the pitfall, but he was growing incensed by the more nonsensical claims that the poacher made. He didn't care if he was crossing his territory or not. He captured those Pokemon illegally and won't stay idle for long. As for his Charmander, he shivered at the sight of the Ekan's glare. However, it wasn't enough to scare him as he shared the same sentiment as his trainer. He could tell from the Poochyena's injuries and wouldn't forgive the evil human for hurting them.
