The boy, who had been dozing under the tree, started to rouse, a little sluggish from the cold. He blinked up at the stranger trainer, "What's wrong? I was napping...The weather was finally starting to become nice. Can't you feel it? The air is warmer..." Okay, maybe he had been out here in the cold a little too long, because it wasn't exactly warm. There was still snow and slush on the ground even if it was sunny with warmer breezes blowing in. As he started to get up to his feet, he spotted the spinda and spooked, flinching a bit, "Gah! A wild pokemon! Oh man...you have a pokemon right? Can you like...battle it or something so it goes away? I don't have one and if it gets aggressive or whatever because it thinks I have food or something, I don't want it chasing me..." He wrinkled his nose a bit, "Also, what's that smell? Why do you smell like that?" Like literal garbage. Or maybe it was the squirtle nearby. After a moment, he skittishly hid behind the trainer, clearly too intimidated to venture further with it there.

Since Dupin gazed at Haruna without indicating a yes or no, she just raised an eyebrow and waited for his response. However, the boy soon began responding to her, distracting her from her pokemon partner once again.
The boy said it was warm, and Haruna glanced at the snow on the ground. Granted, the breeze felt a little warmer than when she was at the lab, but it was far too cold for napping. Didn't this boy know that sleeping in the cold could kill him? Was he delirious?
...Fortunately, he got up and was able to hold a coherent conversation, so he didn't appear that ill.
"I must apologize for the odor. My squirtle fought a pokemon in the trash earlier, and I was too concerned about you to clean him up first. Let's make it up to you by defeating this spinda." She stood up straight and turned to face her squirtle. "Shall we?"
Dupin's eyes lit up and widened as a broad grin stretched across his face.
Finally! Finally! He had proven himself as a mighty squirtle, so now his trainer would properly obey his wishes and train him right!
"Yes, of course!" he agreed in pokemon speech, blinking his tears away.
Turning around, Dupin faced the spinda.
"Tackle," instructed Haruna, standing valiantly while facing the spinda who did them no harm. Of course, Dupin didn't care whether the wild pokemon attacked them first or not.
He charged forward.
"Ha!" he announced with pride. "You picked the wrong opponent today!"

The stumbling, bumbling spinda wasn't being aggressive, but that didn't mean it just stood there and took a wailing on like a complete punching bag. It wobbled as Dupin threw himself in its direction and when he closed in, the spinda just...ducked its own head down and met the squirtle head on. BAM! The two foes slammed into each other and judging by how the spinda just hobbled back a step and Dupin was thrown onto his back...well, the spinda hit harder. At least physically. This would not be like the wurmple where it was easily bullied. This spinda hit reasonably hard for their level. Could...Dupin be at risk of losing this fight? No need to think about that. There was a battle to WIN! WINNERS did not think too hard about their foes being tough, because tough foes were just a good way to earn a lot of experience! A special, lab bred pokemon like Dupin could totally handle whatever was on this first route...right? Haruna watched as Dupin's blue feet padded against the semi-frozen ground as he charged forward. His pelvic anatomy was not designed for upright running. It looked almost comical.
His position will be much more stable if he moves on all fours, thought Haruna.
The squirtle stumbled into the spinda, and the spinda spun and countered gracefully, knocking Dupin back on his shell.
"Squirtle squirt! (Damn, that hurt!)" he complained before rolling back on his feet.
He could do this! He just needed to listen to his trainer's commands. That said, it would be so much easier if his trainer would let him use water gun...
Haruna clicked her tongue against her teeth as she thought the same thing. She didn't want to hurt any pokemon unnecessarily. Would she have to let Dupin use water gun just to win a battle? Luxury was only for those with power, but it was cold out here. After hesitating, she grit her teeth.
"Use water gun!" she finally commanded, feeling ashamed.
Yes! thought Dupin, immediately carrying out her instructions. He spat a stream of water right at that dizzy teddy bear's body as if he was at the fairgrounds!
It's only been two battles, and I've already lost my dignity, complained Haruna internally.

The spinda wobbled so more and glowed. Then, it seemed to orient its body to mimic squirtle's previous posture and it rammed into the squirtle with another tackle. Was it mocking him by being a copy cat?! The little bear wibbled and teetered and leaned back, drunkenly keeping its balance. <You started it. You attacked me for no reason> the drunkenly dancing bear pointed out as Dupin got upset and swore. <You could always just, y'know, leave me alone.> Alas, that was not what happened. The squirtle quite furiously spat WATER into the spinda's face. It shook itself off, startled and now wet. <You're not a very nice pokemon.> APPARENTLY, this darn bear was stronger than it looked. How infuriating. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear (Tailwind for flying types) [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Spinda LV 8 HP 77% [23/30]

"No, I'm not a nice pokemon!" spat Dupin. "I'm special! I've been bred and trained to show my worth and lineage by beating up low-brow wild pokemon like you!"
Although the squirtle spoke big, his head throbbed from that violent tackle.
Ow... Just how strong was this dizzy teddy thing?!
Haru blinked, watching as his squirtle and the wild spinda appeared to do some kind of bizarre dance. The two pokemon banging against each other reminded him of games he played when he was little involving spinning tops. He and his opponent (usually his elder brother) would pit the spinning tops against each other, and the top that spun longest was the winner.
Of course, these were living animals, not spinning tops.
"Water gun," instructed Haru again.
Dupin cheerfully spat water in the spinda's face once more.
"I'm not sure my squirtle can win this battle. I only just picked him up from the lab before coming over here, and he hasn't had much training," he said to the boy, speaking more softly. "If you're really that scared, it might be better if you headed home while Dupin's distracting it. Be careful not to nap out in the snow next time. That can be dangerous."

The spinda scoffed, but why should it be friendly with how they have treated it? It had minded its own business when they had attacked for no reason what so ever, so typical trainers and their pokemon, so violent. "And how do you think it's going?" It puffed while staggering several steps to the right and doing a spin before facing Dupin again. "A pet used to snooze away against a tough wild one who has been hardened by the life out here, I do wonder who's going to win," the spinda smirked. Neither of the pokemon seemed like they were going to back down. The spinda wiped off the water of its face and sent Dupin an annoyed look, "I can play that game too," and somehow it spit a stream of water from its mouth to drench Dupin in. It didn't hurt him as much as the tackles did, but it was getting quite cold with the wind blowing around. Dupin was quick to retaliate with his own more powerful water blast. The kid sent Haru a nervous look, "you aren't going to catch it?!" He exclaimed like that thought had never crossed his mind before now. "Spindas are rare and some people do it to finish the battle faster, and don't you have more than one pokemon on your? If you only have one, don't you need another? You.. you can't lose! You're a trainer, right? Don't you have potions and such? What trainer will just stand and not try to win?" He rambled agitated and stepped closer to Haru. "I'm not going anywhere as long as that aggressive wild pokemon are around, I thought you catch it so it was safe for me to go back, or at least chase it away."He rubbed his arm, either from cold or worry, or perhaps both, "what isn't it going to do with you if your squirtle faints and you are left unprotected?" He looked scared at Haru, "if we're two we can at least help each other against it!"It was funny a boy this scared of wild pokemon had dared taking a nap in the wild. Dupin's face was one of shock when the spinda spit water back at him. Spinda could do that?! They weren't water pokemon! What kind of monster was this?!
Now that Dupin was wet, the cold hit him more intensely, making him shiver. Unlike the spinda, he didn't have any fur to keep warm.
Memories of his previous struggle against the wurmple came back to him in a vicious torrent. He remembered getting filthy. (Now that he'd been washed off, he was actually cleaner than before.) He remembered finally winning to see that his trainer was nowhere in sight.
He wouldn't be abandoned, would he?
Surely, his trainer wouldn't just leave him!
Right?
Why hadn't he used a potion yet? The lab always gave out potions!
An icy cold sensation plummeted down in his stomach.
Haru gazed at the scene with a blank expression. Having been a trainer for less than an hour, he'd completely forgotten he could use potions in battle.
"Catching a pokemon is a serious event," said Haru thoughtfully. "I would have to provide food and take care of it, which can be expensive. I don't want to catch every pokemon I encounter but only ones that will help me in the cases I work on." Speaking of which, he needed to scan the spinda to the pokedex, didn't he? He quickly scanned the pokemon before putting the pokedex back in his pocket. "As for using a potion, that is a good suggestion," he agreed, too embarrassed to reveal he was a newb trainer whose only battling experience was limited to computer simulations at school. None of those simulations used potions.
Even so, he still hesitated. Potions costed money, and was it worth using one on a pokemon he was planning to trade away at the next town? In the end, Haru grit his teeth, pulling the potion out of his bag. He sprayed it on the squirtle's wounds, hoping his injuries would heal in time. Dupin cheered up immediately as his bruises numbed and the swelling decreased. He loves me after all! he thought, not realizing the truth. "See? This is why we trained pokemon are superior! Our trainers can serve us in battle!" he stated, proudly puffing out his chest. Haru uses a potion on Dupin!

The spinda smirked as Dupin was at lost for words after its last comment, it was not only winning the physical battle it was also winning the verbal one. It spun in a pirouette, a very unsteady and shaky one and started the zigzagged movement towards the freaked out squirtle. "Time to finish this," It declared, "that can teach you to attack without any reason."Haru stopped the kid's rambling with a single sentence, the kid stared at him dumbfounded. "Serious business?" He repeated confused, "aren't you just catching what you come across and sell them if you don't want to keep them?"The boy watched as Haru scanned the wild pokemon and then followed his so called suggestion and got Dupin healed up. He stayed close to the trainer and shivered, both from the wind and from the sight of the unnerving Spinda which was charging at them in its weird gait. It was rare you ran into the strange drunk-acting like pokemon, but it was never fun when you did. Dupin looked much better after the potion had been administered, only to become a punching bag as Spinda with surprisingly speed slammed into him and sent them both to the ground. "That looked to hurt, a shame you can't make it hit you less hard or something," the boy wondered, that would really be helpful since that would also mean Haru would need to heal less. Dupin would open his mouth to talk only to be tackled to the ground, he would need to wait to deliver his lines until he got the spinda pushed off him and caught his breath. The normal type didn't look very impressed with his reasoning to why tame pokemon were better. "Too weak to battle on your own you mean. I don't need a human, I'm beating you all by myself," it huffed as it brushed itself off. Haru truly felt like this battle was a waste of time. Even if he trained up the squirtle, he wasn't keeping it. Even if he used the potions, wouldn't that just start him at a loss when he had pokemon of his own team? Frankly, he'd much rather just run away from this battle. The only reason he chose to fight in the first place was because this kid wanted him to.
What an irritating situation, he thought.
"There's a fine line between catching pokemon and poaching. Although some people like to collect one of each pokemon in their region, catching too many can harm the ecosystem or even cause a species to go extinct in the wild," he explained. "It's much better for the environment and conservation of species to only catch a select few for your team. Although there is consumerism for such things, especially in the black market, I only plan to catch those I wish to keep or those that are shiny. I'd rather minimize my impact on nature. Haven't you studied this in school? Environmental conservation is an important topic.
"Of course, it's fine to breed and sell those bred pokemon since you're not taking from nature."
Dupin lied on the ground briefly before rolling back to his feet. He glared at the spinda.
"Dupin could reduce the damage he's taking by using withdraw, but--"
The squirtle shot out another water gun, aiming right at the spinda's face! Did he not hear Haru's words, or did he not care? Either way, he seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the blood rush, even with all the bruises he was earning.
"--I don't think he's interested. He appears to prefer attacking repeatedly rather than using strategy or relying on status moves," said Haru, gazing at the squirtle with a detached expression. He didn't appear to have feelings regarding Dupin's obedience or lack-there-of one way or another.

"Well....uh, yeah, of course. Ecosystem protection, definitely!" the boy stammered. Most likely, this kid was the type to fall asleep in school and pretend that he heard every word. "Isn't breeding just forcing a Pokemon to lay eggs for profit? That seems morally wrong in a completely different connotation," he answered, rubbing his chin in thought. Imagine, an ethics lesson in the middle of a route while a Pokemon battle was taking place. The Spinda seemed to concentrate a bit more on Dupin for a second, before the paws of the bear started to glow a light blue color. Moving its arms in a twisty fashion, the bear tried to be fancy before letting a water gun attack go. However, it was pretty useless, the water splashing off the turtle Pokemon, barely doing anything. Grunting, the Squirtle took the opportunity to show the Spinda what a real Water Gun looked like, as the dizzy creature was blown back by the pressure in the water spray. Stumbling around, the panda recovered pretty quickly, but had a grimace on his face. "Wait, isn't it your job as the trainer to make sure the Pokemon listens to commands? Even if you don't care about the Squirtle, wouldn't you want to build up your experience for whatever Pokemon you do keep on your team?"Solid question from the sleepy boy. "When it comes to breeding," replied Haru, "you're not upsetting nature or stealing from the environment. Of course, there are terrible breeders out there who run 'puppy mills' and the like. Such behavior is inexcusable and should be persecuted in full by the law."
Then, the lad brought up the question of training pokemon to follow specific commands.
"You make a good point," replied Haru with a thoughtful nod. He watched as his squirtle fought against the spinda with a cold look as though it was nothing more than a match on TV and had nothing to do with him. "It is important to teach them to follow commands. At the same time, for my purposes, they must also be able to think and react independently."
Then again, it wasn't like he'd keep this squirtle with him beyond today. The squirtle was more-or-less his "practice pokemon" until he got his actual team members and began training with them.
"Considering that I'll be trading him in as soon as I get to Cherrygrove City, I suppose there's no harm in practicing commands now," he said, indirectly hinting at the fact he'd never fought a real pokemon battle before.
The squirtle narrowed his eyes at the spinda. Was it some kind of kung-fu master? If he didn't want to fight so much, couldn't it just play dead or something?
"Dupin," commanded his trainer suddenly, "water gun!"
Dupin's tail quivered with excitement as he spat out another spray of water at the spinda. Now that he had his trainer's support and even potions, he felt there was no way he could lose! Dupin uses water gun!

"You're just getting rid of it?" The boy asked, looking at the squirtle. "You dumb or something? Like, you talk about mouths to feed and work and all that, but like... That looks like one of the starters Elm hands out. Starter pokemon are usually stronger than what you can usually find on early routes like this. And what if you were doing detective work by a river or something? Water pokemon can swim. What if it's a biiig body of water you gotta cross? Or up a waterfall? Or through a whirlpool!" He made some wooshing noises. "I dunno what you're hoping to trade up for but...starters are usually considered pretty useful to anyone who has them. Then again, I guess that is why you don't care about teaching it how to listen or battle. Seems...kinda sad though. Poor squirtle is gonna be abandoned right after it was chosen. I know it was probably bred on purpose for new trainers and not everyone uses them but...still sad." He rubbed the back of his head, "And if you're every like...worried about extra mouths to feed... there's adoption centers in every town here. Pokemon rarely have to wait long to find homes if you do catch something you can't defeat." Though it did look like this spinda wasn't trying super hard to win anymore... "I heard a rumor that there's some guy in Mahogany who wants to trade a blastoise for a super rare, powerful pokemon," he added. "Maybe whoever adopts your squirtle will raise him up to make that trade with that guy." As the kid rambled a bit, the squirtle in question was finally given a command by his trainer and was HYPE about it. Oh yeah. Finally, his trainer was getting in on the action! Time to battle properly! Before he could blast the bear again with water, though, the mimicking bear spat water at him first. So annoying. "Since squirtle are in such good demand, he'll surely find a good owner who will give him the love and attention he needs."
Unfortunately, Haruna appeared to treat pokemon the same way her parents treated her.
"I actually considered using a totodile in such a manner," she continued softly. "Unfortunately, squirtle's line is too large and bulky, more like a tank. A feraligatr is far more skilled at sneaking and would be useful hiding in swamps and rivers. I came to Johto expecting to start off with one... Unfortunately, for whatever reason, they're using Kanto's starters instead. If I wanted to choose from squirtle, bulbasaur, or charmander, wouldn't I have flown to Kanto instead? This situation is just as disappointing to me as to my squirtle who ended up with such a trainer. There weren't options other than the three Kantonion starters to begin my journey with, and I couldn't afford to buy one elsewhere."
Haruna closed her mouth, ending her bitter words there. She truly felt bad for the squirtle, even if she masked her feelings with indifference, but the two of them were not a match.
"Water gun," she commanded stiffly, pretending she hadn't spoken with such disappointment a moment before.
Dupin wiped the water off his face before attempting to hose down his opponent once more.
Believing he'd finally earned Haruna's recognition, he had no idea he was to part with her so soon. Dupin uses water gun!

"Huh, yeah, I heard there was a thief who broke in and caused a big ruckus," the boy said aloud, stretching a bit. "Well. Good luck with your journey. Hope you're right that squirtle finds a good home. I still don't quite understand it myself, but I guess not everyone bonds super close with their first ever pokemon like in the stories." It was then that the Spinda seemed to decide mimicking squirtle was too much work and charged again, slamming into Dupin hard. <Why can't you just go awaaaay> whined the Spinda. <I'm clearly stronger than you.> Dupin was rattled by that last hit. But in...a good way? He felt weaker than before, yet...stronger? Like that last blow shifted something inside of him. Altered him. When he blasted the next water gun into Spinda's face, it was bigger, stronger. Torrent. He had heard of this before. In a pinch, Dupin's water moves would be stronger.
