Under the Surface [Rock Quarry] [HOLD]

Frigibax refused to come out of her pokeball and honestly, Freya didn't blame her. This place was hot! While looking for a place to train some of her pokemon before the next gym, she ended up finding a brochure at a pokemart advertising a hot spring and spa. It looked like a great place to relax, and well, there were pokemon apparently that were there that guests needed to be careful of, which meant training opportunities! How perfect. 

Upon arriving, she signed herself up for a spa day, and then decided to look around while she waited for her appointment time. That hot water was just calling to her! 

Naturally curious, she ended up clambering around a rocky area nearby that was said to be a quarry. 

"Wow. This place is massive," she said to herself. "I wonder what kinds of pokemon live here."

One of the best things about the Hot Spring area was that the outside weather conditions couldn't penetrate the area.
Blizzards at home? Not here, it was too hot.

Super humid days? Not to worry, the dry heat of the springs keeps the humidity down. It was literally a perfect temperature place, as long as you could stand the measured heat. The Rock Quarry, even though it was off to the side, still experienced this heat. It was a little bit better here because of the cooler earth and the rocks, but not dramatically different.

Freya would have to be careful as she walked, as the rocks and stones would sometimes shift under weight, even if the individual was not heavy. It was more of a problem as she worked her way down the entrance side of the quarry. Once she was on the level ground, she would see several areas were rock and stone had been mined and removed in blocks.

There were any number of reasons why the blocks were taken, but at least the site seemed to be quiet.
Unfortunately, her footing was slightly off and as she stepped on a particularly pointy rock, the stone shifted beneath and proved to be a Pokemon instead!

Freya was more than a little distracted as she roamed the quarry. Not only was she looking around, but she received a ding on her pokegear. When she checked it, she saw that Adrian had sent her another pokemon to help train that he recently finished hatching and raising up from an egg. That made for two 'project' babies he sent her to help with. Marill and now Teddiursa. 

[The pokemon I sent you is holding an eviolite. It should help keep it on the battlefield a little longer as Teddiursa are quite fragile defensively. Hang onto it for a while. I don't currently need it.] 

"Huh. Well then, I can wait to meet this little one," she said cheerfully. "Let's see what her moves are. Oh, close combat. Crunch...swords dance. Covet. Wow. A nice aggressive set. It's too slow and frail for raids but I'm sure it will do a great job in gyms..."

And that was when she stepped on and promptly tripped over the geodude.

She staggered and fell flat on her butt, "Ouch! Oh, sorry!" Her expression was sheepish. Staring at the rock, she had a brilliant idea. "Teddiursa, let me see you use close combat!" She took the pokeball she just received in her boxes and threw it, revealing the tiny bear. She looked around briefly before spotting the rock.

<I'm like super tough!> the little bear growled, trying to play tough as she ran up to the geodude and started taking swipes at it. Freya took the distraction as an opportunity to stand up, brush herself off, and pluck a ball off her belt. No harm in doing a little catching while out here~ She chucked the ball as soon as she saw an opening.

The Geodude looked from the bear cub to the human and back again, before flexing its "shoulders" and preparing to fight against the trainer's Pokemon. It seemed like not many people came over to this area, so maybe the local wildlife was not that used to interacting with humans, which would be why the Geodude was buried in what would seem like the path through the rock quarry.

At the same time, people who used the quarry would likely be more aware and on the look out for such things, but that's okay. Freya had the right to explore also.

Growling, the Geodude rolled itself into a tight ball and flung itself at Teddiursa, knocking the bear back a pace or two. Unfortunately for the rock Pokemon, this put it right in the reach of the ursine and the Teddiursa responded to her command, unleashing a dizzying amount of punches and combos against the rock body of the Geodude. Chips of rock flew off and when the attack was over, the capsule came flying in and hit the Geodude in the face.

Absorbed within, the wild Pokemon attempted escape but wasn't strong enough at the ball settled, dinging with the successful capture. The sphere shimmered before disappearing. Ah, the wonders of technology.

It went quiet again at the quarry, the location waiting to see if Freya would continue exploring.

Freya watched as the teddiursa did her best! Despite getting hit hard by a rollout by the stronger pokemon, she countered with dizzying blows that took chips and out of that geodude's form. One day she would be super powerful! Freya could tell. But for now, she was a young little pokemon with paws that did their best against solid stone. She wouldn't endure another hit from that rollout if it gained any momentum, so throwing a ball had been the right idea.

She watched as the capsule hit the geodude's head and then engulfed it in red light. A few wiggles later and said capsule fell still.

Freya picked up the ball and grinned at Teddiursa, "You did such a good job! You're going to be a big, strong and scary ursaring one day. Maybe even an Ursaluna! I wonder...if you can evolve into Ursaluna here in in Johto...Back home they couldn't...not unless you found a very special item from Sinnoh that was said to have formed in a long ago era."

She pat the teddiursa who made a cheerful noise, "Goodness you're cute. You remind me of all the adorable little teddi's I saw around Paldea." After a moment, she returned her new friend and kept exploring, a little more careful about where she stepped!

Peace returned to the Rock Quarry now that the battle was over. Geodude were always fighting, so the sounds of battle were a common place amid the rock slabs and loose slopes. At the same time, walking on flatter zones throughout the quarry was a good idea as well, as the sharp stones could cause a twisted ankle if a traveling trainer was not careful enough.

Freya would not see anything for a while, until a strange sound echoed from somewhere on her right side. If she decided to follow the sound, she would eventually find a small, armor clad Pokemon happily chewing on some quartz and some crystal formations. The wild Pokemon hadn't noticed her yet, and if she played her cards right, she would likely be able to get the jump on it.

Freya paused for a moment when she stumbled across the aron chomping on quartz. Woah, how cool! She grinned as she watched the little pokemon eat, having never seen one before and happy to just sit and observe the little creature for a while. After a few minutes of nature watching, she decided this was a good time for marill to have a shot at a battle. Adrian wanted her help raising these pokemon, so she would do her best to assist as promised.

"Alright, marill, why don't you try out a waterfall!" she called out. The aron looked pretty strong and well, marill weren't known for hitting hard. As the little blue mouse burst from the ball and engulfed herself in water, Freya had a thought. Perhaps she should catch this aron so it registered in her pokedex and she could better study it to know what the best way of battling it would be in the future! That made perfect sense.

So braced with that idea, she watched her pokemon surge forth, encapsulated in water, before trying to slam into the aron. Regardless if she hit or not, Freya then threw a pokeball.

Aron was content to just continue with its meal when it slammed in the back by a cascade of a water column. Washed out a little bit and now worried about rusting, the young steel Pokemon turned to face the attacker. Snorting, the Aron charged forward on its little legs before slamming directly into the belly of the water mouse.

The wild Pokemon looked ready to do some other kind of move when the poke ball was flung, the device hitting the armored rock type in the head and absorbing it within.

Freya's poke ball bounced along the rocky ground before it settled and began the shaking process. After the required amount, the ball dinged and settled. Aron was Freya's!

Freya worried for a moment when her marill was hit pretty darn hard by that aron. But fortunately, her little water mouse did not get knocked out by the blow. That meant that after she caught the little critter, her companion was able to get get back up and shake off the gravel and dirt with a huff.

"You did a good job! Both you and teddiursa are more physical fighters than special, so fighting these tough as stone rock and steel types has gotta be hard. But this sort of training will be good for you. Help you both be even stronger in the future! Now rest up a little while." Then, after a flash of light, she returned to her trek, easing down further into the quarry. Even when the walls became steep and she needed to crawl down like a rock climber, she was fairly steady.

One didn't become a champion trainer cowering in fear all the time.

Freya was doing really well so far. She was two for two with her encounters, capturing new Pokemon to either use for certain teams or for any kind of trade fodder. Maybe they would just be relaxing back at home.

Regardless, she was showing real skill as a trainer and when a trainer starts off like this in an area, the wild Pokemon usually react in one of two ways: they either attack on sight or run in fear. It would appear that today, they were a big more aggressive than normal and not taking kindly to a trainer capturing their friends/loved ones.

This was evident in the way the Pokemon were glaring at her as she made her way down one of the slopes of the rock quarry, only for one of the Geodudes to launch itself at her, half rolling and bouncing into the air thanks to gravity.

Freya nearly slipped when she saw the geodude hurtling towards her down the slope. "Looks like our rock friends have found out that we're here to tango," she said, grinning. "Teddiursa. Show your stuff. Swords Dance then Close Combat!" She threw the ball that held the little bear and watched as the teddiursa took a moment to register what was happening. 

Oh. THAT was the problem. The rock throwing itself down the side of the quarry to fight. Invigorated and filled with confidence from the last conflict, she spun around in a circle, pumping herself up for the fight. With luck, they'd end this in one solid blow. 

She balled her little fists. 

Time to brawl!

The appearance of the trainer's Pokemon only made the Geodude more eager to start conflict. Curling into itself, it prepared to slam into the small bear Pokemon with its tackle attack, but before the rock could reach, twin swords of energy danced around the cub's body, powering up its attack.

When the Geodude made contact with the Teddiursa, the Eviolite around the bear's neck glowed a little bit, absorbing the energy from the rock Pokemon's momentum, dispersing the energy instead of it damaging the bear directly. Teddiursa still took a little damage, but nothing like what you'd expect from a strike like that.

The wild Pokemon was now close to the bear and she would take full advantage of this. Paws at the ready, the Teddiursa delivered a punishing set of punches, jabs, and elbows to the Geodude. In fact, she hit it so hard that it was sent flying down the opposite side of the slope, rolling away out of sight. The young bear was surely showing much improvement and if she kept this up, would be feared in the wild as the stories spread.

The geodude slammed into the teddiursa and Freya winced at the impact. Ouch. That looked like it hurt...or should have. Teddi seemed to recover quickly from the blow, the eviolite proving its worth quite readily. She wasn't quite sure why Adrian gave her such a powerful item just for training with, but she assumed it was simply because he did not currently need it for his endeavors. By the sound of it, he wasn't working with low level pokemon in need of help of boosted defenses, nor was he preparing to face a gym. So giving her the item wasn't too great a sacrifice on his part.

She watched as the teddiursa's following flurry of paws send that geodude back to the stone age. Wham bam, one and done. "Awesome!" she cheered. Scoops for Teddiursa. Scoops and a cuddle. 

<I am so tough and strong and—> Teddi began as Freya snuggled her. They both broke down into giggles. <Lemme doooown, I'm not a cuddly teddiursa. I'm a scary one. Gonna be the biggest most scary ursaring one day!>

"Really now? What about...an Ursaluna?"

<Ursaluna? What's that?> Teddi asked, looking intrigued.

"Some very special ursarings when they come in contact with a special item on a special night under a special moon...it is said they evolve again! That for them, ursaring is not the final evolution. This ursaluna is bigger and tougher and stronger, and sooooo big and tough that it primarily travels around on all four paws and can carry a grown man on its back! It is also said to have a powerful nose and is a talented digger, which is why it became part ground type." Freya explained, conveying as best she could the old stories she had read growing up. "Think that will be you?"

<Yeah! Because I am the toughest and greatest!> Teddi declared. 

"Well, if you're going to show the world how tough you are...first we need to get you evolved. And that's a long ways away. Think you're ready to keep training?"

<MORE! MORE TRAINING!> Teddiursa was absolutely hyped. Some pokemon sure did love to battle and this little one was one of them. Placing the teddi on the ground, Freya continued to navigate the quarry, looking for more pokemon to potentially battle. Both Teddiursa and Marill needed some levels, as per her promise to Adrian when she agreed to help him train some baby pokemon as part of her 'rent payment'.
