As midday approached, the mist began to dissipate in the tranquil Violet City. Though the streets were mostly deserted, the city itself hummed with activity. Local fishermen gathered at the fishing jetty, exchanging intriguing tips as they watched over their well-worn, dependable fishing rods. Meanwhile, the joyful voices of children echoed from behind the walls of the renowned Pokémon School. On the rooftops, numerous bird Pokémon found sanctuary in specially designed perches, while trainers bustled in and around the Pokémon Center, engaging in conversations, training sessions, and Pokémon trades. Dominating the cityscape was the majestic Flying-type Gym, its grand open dome looming above the arena - a testament to the prowess of avian Pokémon showcasing their skills.
Crow burst out of the Pokémon Center in a hurry, Trojan floating right beside him. His hair was horribly dishevelled, even more than usual, sunglasses askew on his nose, and he frantically adjusted the hoodie he had hastily thrown on before leaving the PC. - You were supposed to wake me up! - he argued, sprinting toward the Gym. He had overslept and was on the verge of being late for his Gym Challenge. This time, he had resorted to medication for his insomnia to ensure he faced the battle with a clear head. - I triedzzz! - Rotom protested. - Even zzzimulated nuclear exzzzplosions didn't workzzz! - What am I giving you treats for?! Useless! - Crow scolded, venting his frustration on the Rotom-phone. Never mind he could have slightly, teeny-tiny bit overdone it with pills, but...
With just a minute left, Crow dashed into the Gym, swiftly bypassing reception and anyone in his path, finally reaching the arena where Falkner awaited. The stands surrounding the arena were moderately filled with spectators eager to witness challengers confront their first major obstacle on their journey. - I'm here, not late at all. - Crow declared, glancing at the Rotom-phone and hastily running his hands through his rugged hair. With three seconds to spare, he made a perfect entrance. - Anyway, I challenge you, Falkner! You and your sad little hand-me-downs. - he smirked, tossing a pokeball upwards. In a flash of red light, Typhoon emerged, ready to ruthlessly attack any Pokémon thrown his way. This would surely prove he was the best Pokémon his trainer owned!

Crow certainly made an entrance. Falkner was enjoying a warm cup of tea in a thermos as he rested between challengers, not unused to people being late or even skipping their scheduled challenge time. Kids and first time gym circuit challengers could get cold feet and second-guess themselves. Falkner took it in stride whenever someone didn't show and either let walk ins come in early or had a little rest. When the weather was nice, he often had many more battles to get through than when it was say...blizzarding. When the older man burst in with all the cockiness and audacity of someone who didn't know the meaning of losing, he stood up, thermos still in hand. He blinked at him and watched as he insulted his precious birds who he took care of in his father's wake...before sending out a bird of his own. A spearow. "...Welcome, challenger. These so-called 'hand-me-down' birds are to be shown respect, whether they are victorious or they lose. Surely you would understand given your possession of a flying-type yourself." With a natural wariness now instilled inside of him, he waved down a pidgey. "Use gust." No point in scattering sand into a foe with keen eyes. The pidgey swooped down upon the spearow, who brazenly lashed out with a fury attack. Which made have done some impressive damage...if it could have hit the broad side of a barn. Maybe it was the time of day or the fact that the pidgey blew a powerful gust into its face, but its onslaught never found purchase on the tiny bird's form. - Oh, buddy... - Crow's voice dripped with a honeyed tone of faux sympathy, his words laced with a calculated blend of pity and disdain. He had arrived at this pivotal moment armed not only with his Pokémon but also with an arsenal of knowledge meticulously gleaned from exhaustive research. Every facet of the gym's history, the exploits of its previous leader, and the very essence of Falkner himself had been dissected and analyzed with precision.
As he stood before Falkner, Crow couldn't help but feel a surge of confidence coursing through his veins. Falkner, in Crow's eyes, was merely a puppet, a marionette dancing to the tune of his family's legacy. He had inherited the gym, handed down to him on a silver platter, without ever truly earning his stripes or forging his own path. Crow relished the opportunity to exploit this vulnerability, to wield his knowledge like a weapon and unravel Falkner's composure with each carefully chosen word.
- I'm not insulting birds... I'm insulting you. - Crow declared boldly, his voice carrying an air of defiance as he leveled his gaze at Falkner. His words were delivered with unwavering confidence, each syllable oozing with disdain for his opponent. As he spoke, a mischievous grin crept across his face like wildfire, casting shadows of doubt over Falkner's composure.
The audacity of Crow's words reverberated throughout the arena, igniting a tumultuous wave of whispers among the spectators. Some nodded in silent agreement, acknowledging the truth in Crow's brazen assertion, while others recoiled in disbelief at the sheer audacity. - Shame I couldn't battle your daddy. It's him who accomplished something here - he trained those birds for you. - Crow continued, his words cutting through the tension like a knife. His tone was laced with sarcasm, each syllable laden with contempt for Falkner's perceived lack of merit. Yet, despite the murmurs of agreement and disdain that swirled around him, Crow remained steadfast in his resolve.
His focus was singular, his determination unwavering: to defeat this tool masquerading as a Gym Leader and to prove his own superiority beyond any shadow of doubt. With every fiber of his being, Crow was prepared to seize victory by all means necessary.
The problem arose when Typhoon, in his excitement, launched his attack with reckless abandon, only to miss entirely and receive a retaliatory Gust from Falkner's Pidgey. While not a catastrophic failure, it was enough to irk Crow, stirring a growing sense of frustration within him.
- Focus, Typhoon! - Crow's voice cut through the struggle of battle, commanding his Spearow with a firm yet urgent tone. - Fury Attack when it's below you! - he ordered, his words infused with a sense of determination to turn the tide in their favor. With a swift nod of understanding, Typhoon ascended rapidly, utilizing his superior speed and agility to gain the high ground over Falkner's chunkier bird. With each dive, Typhoon unleashed a relentless barrage of strikes, his fury matched only by the ferocity of his attacks. Time and time again, he swooped down upon his adversary, his movements a blur of motion as he harried the Pidgey with unyielding determination.

Gym leaders were typically used to verbal abuse. After all, like other jobs and people in positions of power, they had their fair share of haters. However, it was rare for a gym challenger to use such a personal, up front verbal assault on Falkner. Were the birds hand me downs? Yes, technically. To so broadly roast the boy and his gym, though, was almost too much for the young man to bear. Fortunately, he kept it together, because losing it to this foul, foul man would only make it worse for him. So, Falkner decided that he would just let the battle decide what would happen here. "You talk a lot. I hope that you have more to back it up." he said simply, before putting his attention back to the battle at hand. Falkner was able to pay more attention now that he was blocking out Crow, but it wouldn't help as his poor Pidgey just became a huge target for the hooked beak of the Spearow. In a rapid succession, the Spearow lashed out with its fury attack, making feathers fly and causing a lot of damage to the Pidgey. He was totally overpowered, and there was not much he could do about it. Pidgey, giving an honest effort, flapped his wings hard and achieved lift, before slamming directly into the belly of the other bird, catching it off guard. While it was positive damage, they still had a long way to go in this battle. Gym Battle (Falkner) Weather: Indoors [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Pidgey LV 10 HP 23% [7/31]

In the eyes of Falkner, Crow discerned a flicker of vulnerability. Despite the verbal jabs, the Gym Leader's resolve remained strong. Crow, quietly satisfied, relished Falkner's stoic response. With the day stretching before them, the teal-haired trainer had a trove of cutting remarks, each aimed at chipping away at Falkner's self-esteem. As Typhoon gained momentum in the battle, Crow was convinced, that he had this battle in the palm of his hand.
- Is that the best you've got, buddy? No witty comebacks, no defending your honor? - he taunted with false disappointment, thoroughly enjoying the chance to release his own bottled-up frustrations and anger at the way things had been going. It felt akin to overpowering a defenceless child and savouring the victory - sometimes, one just needed to seize the low-hanging fruit, and Crow was not the one to turn his nose on it. - So you gave up already, going through the motions. "The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon" my arse. - he spat to his side. - Don't worry, I'll finish it quickly. - with those words, Crow's gaze turned to the two birds.
Typhoon hadn't anticipated such a swift counterattack from the smaller Pidgey, catching him off guard. Yet, before the brownish bird could escape, he swiftly sank his talons into its sides, maintaining a firm grip throughout the struggle. - Peck! Peck until it stops moving! - Crow bellowed. Typhoon obediently unleashed its attacks, inflicting further damage upon the Pidgey, striking at its back and head relentlessly.
- Come on, show me that ace of yours. Let me have another good laugh! - Crow taunted, continuing to mock the Gym Leader without mercy.

Falkner's mouth twitched. Stay steady. Stay calm. Don't let it show how much it effected you. His hands curled a bit, nails cutting into the flesh of his palms. He breathed in slowly. Then out through his nose. Then he flashed his foe a dry smile that looked a little threatening due to his annoyance. "Pidgey, do what you can to tire it out!" he called after his own pokemon. The pidgey, well aware this was a losing battle for him, chirped in compliance and started to fly as fast as its little wings could go. Up and down, around and through. It wove beneath the raised arena and around their trainers in an elaborate infinity loop. But it was weary already and the spearow was faster. Within a few seconds of it starting these evasive manuvers, the spearow caught up and dashed it down with a powerful peck between the shoulders. Falkner returned him and sighed, pocketing the ball. He lifted a hand and a pidgeotto flew down from the rafters, "Do you simply enjoy hearing yourself speak or do you have something actually interesting to say?"

Crow cackled triumphantly at Falkner's extremely weak response, relishing in the cracks that betrayed the Leader's composure. To him, there was nothing sweeter than the bitterness seeping from Falkner's demeanor at that moment. Though, he was slightly annoyed that he still somewhat kept it together this whole time and battle was nearing its conclusion, Crow was sure of it.
As Pidgey returned to its pokeball, Crow beckoned with a sharp whistle for Typhoon to return. The avian Pokemon obeyed without hesitation, perching dutifully upon its trainer's outstretched arm. - Indeed, I do! - Crow declared, his voice dripping with cynicism. - I love hearing myself telling truth to posers like you. It's a sweet irony, wouldn't you agree? - with a nonchalant toss of the question into the breeze, Crow didn't anticipate any useful responses. Simultaneously, his hand darted toward the next pokeball in his possession. Upon its release, a Bombirdier emerged, adorned with an impressive array of boulders nestled within its feathery apron, ready for action.
As the Pidgeotto gracefully took to the skies, Crow's curiosity was piqued. With a swift motion, he retrieved his Pokedex and scanned the avian creature. - Hmm... - Crow's eyebrow arched in surprise. - Approximately fifteenth level? - he mused aloud. - How did that happen, I wonder? How did that thing evolve so early? - his inquiry dripped with genuine interest. The idea of forcing evolution beyond the norm intrigued Crow, sparking an honest initrigue he couldn't easily dismiss.
- Now, Rock Throw! - Crow's voice rang as Dart, the Bombirdier, sprang into action. With a graceful sweep of its wings, Dart surged forward towards the Pidgeotto, swinging the apron and chucking hefty rocks at the airborne enemy.

Falkner rolled his eyes at Crow’s comment. Was this man supposed to be taken seriously with insults that sounded like they came straight out of high school? It was frustrating that he managed to beat Pidgey, but it wasn’t the end of the battle by a long shot. “And why exactly am I a poser?” Falkner raised an eyebrow curiously. He’d taken the GYM over after his father. The dynamics behind which Crow couldn’t have the slightly understanding of. And the town appreciated all the hard work that Falkner put behind both the GYM and his part-time work as a police officer. “I help keep my city safe and am the first real challenge for new trainers starting out.” He added. “Pidgeotto, we need to steal away their advantages. Use your Sand Attack and make it harder on his Bombirdier to spot you and attack.” The command was simple. The large bird of prey turned and stared at Crow with a burning passion that seemed to undress the real him, as though there was more than meets the eye with the jerk that waltz into their gym for the chance to win a badge. It screeched loudly, soaring up high into the air, before spinning around elegantly and kicking up all the dust and debris that had gathered in the entire room – from the walls to the ceilings – to create a miniature tornado of sand splattering in Bombirdier’s face (and Crow’s, if he wasn’t careful). “Only our opponent, understand?! Focus on his Bombirdier, Pidgeotto! Use your Gust. Seize the moment while the winds are whipping around the field!” Falkner stated firmly as Pidgeotto easily darted out of the way of Dart’s rocks flying through the air. They snapped against the wooden floorboards and walls, instead. Then Pidgeotto kicked up a powerful gust of wind that ripped through Dart’s white and black feathers, ruffling them up terribly so. “Evolution is amazing. Nearly all Pokemon will evolve at the ‘average’ time expected. However, some – when raised diligently with lots of love and care – may evolve earlier than expected with their trainers.” Falkner answered simply. Dart’s next assault of rocks would find their mark, temporarily knocking Pidgeotto out of the skies. Crow stood with his arms crossed, a sardonic grin curling his lips in response to Falkner's question. - You daft or what? - he snapped, his tone laced with scorn. - None of this is thanks to you; daddy just handed it to you. Yet, all the sources lavish you with those luxurious titles, as if you actually earned any of it. - he drawled, deliberately elongating his words as if addressing a dim-witted child, stretching them out only to be annoying. - I suppose you fancy yourself the city's valiant defender, when the greatest threat is a swarm of angry Bellsprouts. - he chuckled loudly. The boy certainly had a knack for making himself seem important, though it was rather endearing in its own way.
During the exchange, Crow occasionally observed Falkner's feeble attempts to outwit him and his Pokémon. However, when he glanced back at the Leader, he noticed something new, something that hadn't been there initially. It was as if a switch had been flipped. "Finally!" Crow thought to himself. Finally, he had succeeded in lighting a fire under Falkner's butt. Now, the battle was truly underway - and Crow couldn't have been more pleased. Humiliating the Leader at his best was a triumph worth boasting about, solidifying his status as the superior Flying-type specialist.
As the sand mixed with various debris engulfed the arena, Crow couldn't help but smile, though he shielded his face with his arm. It wasn't entirely unexpected; after studying Falkner's strategies, it seemed this was the only tactic the Leader consistently relied on. Dart struggled amidst the strong gusts and blinding sand, her attempts to hurl boulders hindered. When the Gust attack struck her at full force, Dart was thrown off balance, compelled to fly lower and take the opportunity to gather all the rocks back into her apron. - Took you a while, daddy's boy. Too bad it's all for naught. - Crow remarked once the winds subsided. - Hone Claws! - he yelled out. Bombirdier obeyed, driving her talons into a single boulder on the ground, sharpening them for better grip and control over the said stone. - Love and care, huh? Come on, man. We're not in kindergarten anymore. - he added with a touch of pity in his tone.

Falkner raised a single eyebrow. Crow’s reasoning was enough to make his blood boil. This unknown trainer had a haughty mouth and foamed with harsh criticism. Instead of responding, Falkner’s sharp blue gaze would focus on the bright red and yellow feathers of his large osprey as the Pidgeotto soared around the battlefield. Words wouldn’t convince this loudmouth of a trainer anything. Only actions might help solidify the moment. To say that Crow managed to bury himself underneath Falkner’s skin and pull at the strings underneath might have been an understatement. “Pidgeotto, keep up your Gust attack!” The large bird screeched loudly, a promise to his trainer that they would overcome this menace. Something about Crow made Pidgeotto’s feathers fluff up. Though there might not have been much beyond words to warrant it, the large osprey wasn’t fond of this stranger who managed to waltz inside of their gym. Large winds spiraled in an instance as Pidgeotto fanned its large, powerful winds to create a whirlwind of sharp gusts. They tore at Dart, ruffling his feather profusely and digging below them to tear at the softer flesh underneath. “Care and love are what Pokemon need.” Falkner insisted, standing firm on his stance. Crow rubbed him the wrong way in every way imaginable. This was something that Falkner needed to address, though possibly later. He had to stand firm as Crow’s first real challenge within the Johto region. “We’ll see if it’s for naught or not soon enough. Your arrogance will one day be your downfall.” Falkner spoke, with a chilling sense of foreboding as he issued the futuristic warning. Aorrgance might sound nice, but often blinded their leaders along the way. Crow stood firm, while Dart emulated his determination, facing the biting winds head-on. The gusts tore at her black and white feathers, a few of them torn loose, sending them swirling in a chaotic dance around her. As Falkner grappled with his thoughts, Crow couldn't help but find amusement in the display. His confident grin never wavered. - Ah, my 'arrogance' - he chuckled, the word rolling off his tongue with a hint of irony. - is what will propel me to greatness and power. Feel free to stay humble, content with your position as a mere first Gym trainer. - clutching onto his sunglasses, Crow braced himself as the force of Pidgeotto's Gust intensified with its mounting anger.
- Stay put, Dart! - Crow's voice boomed through the tension. Gripping the boulder tightly in her talons, Bombirdier stood unmoved through the razor winds perpetuated by Pidgeotto. - Keep at it! We got this! - Dart's already sharpened claws kept digging deep into the rock, almost cutting through it as it if was a warm butter. When the pain was becoming slightly unbearable, she raised her wings to at least partially cover herself from the attack, yet no sound escaped her bright red beak.

The arrogance of the man never faltered. Even as Falkner sought to raise the mask by calling the spade out by name, Crow remained the same in the midst of their fight. Something about the hotheaded lad’s temperament and confident words seemed to rub the blue-haired Gym Leader the wrong way. As though there was darkness that twinkled inside of Crow’s nearly auburn eyes, hidden messages the simple Violet City Leader didn’t quite pick up. Though assumption based accusations only lead to a slippery slope one would never climb out of. “Pidgeotto, you’re doing great.” Praise raised off the tip of Falkner’s tongue in a singsong melody. He clapped, pressing his roughened palms together multiple times creating audible waves that bounced around the room. “Keep up your attack. While Dart bides her time sharpening her claws, you need to focus on giving her your strongest winds.” The whirlwind screamed inside of the gym, building upon itself in its own intensity. Pidgeotto swooped through the air, flying around the harsh gusts and fanning them with his wings to keep them going. Dart remained the perfect target as she kept herself locked on the rocks she clung to with her sharp claws. They cracked under pressure, creating a formidable foe whose blades promised to slice through their adversaries with ease. Though the winds ripped at her softer feathers and sent pieces of them scattering in the breeze, she seemingly never faltered. Pidgeotto, ever an intelligent bird of prey by design, knew that he needed to kick his winds up and truly create a tornado of wind strong enough to rip the top off their gym if he hoped to stop Dart in her tracks. - I want to see that rock split! - he commanded firmly. But watching Dart endure all the punishment made him uneasy; he had seriously underestimated what a lower-level Pidgeotto could handle. With each command from Falkner, the winds intensified. Crow struggled to keep his sunglasses in place, frustrated by relying on a Pokémon he had never used in a real battle, only in training. Despite his frustration, the teal-haired trainer maintained a calm expression, revealing little of his thoughts as he waited for his plan to unfold.
It felt like an eternity, but finally, Dart's claws broke through the rock with a satisfying crack. Crow's grin widened into a triumphant smile. - Thought you had it, huh? I know what your Pidgeotto is capable of... But I've got a trick too. - he cleared his throat theatrically. - Dart, use Roost. - if smirks could kill, Crow's smirk would have decimated half of the world. The Bombirdier gracefully took flight, leaving the range of Pidgeotto's Gust, and landed on a perch near the gym's opening at the roof. She quickly groomed her ruffled feathers, regaining her strength and seemingly projecting an ominously similar expression as her trainer.
- Feel free to surrender. Unless, you want your Pidgeotto seriously hurt. Either way is fine with me. - Crow chuckled. There was absolutely nothing Falkner could do to turn this around and while the ex-Rocket would adore humiliating the Leader by breaking the brown bird's wings, he'd also like to get the badge fast and move on to the more important matters.
So, in that order: Dart uses "Roost", aka I throw a Super Potion at her, of course she doesn't know Roost yet, but I like this as a flavour Dart uses Hone Claws!

Falkner frowned as he watched Dart’s claws rip through the rock, sending fragmented pieces raining back down on the battlefield below. It had two side effects that would only mean to cause his PoKemon greater harm. “Pidgeotto, use your Sand Attack! We need to make sure Dart cannot hit us with her rocks!” It was one of their best strategies as allowing them to maintain the upper hand would only prove to slowly chisel away at their health. Though Crow remained ever confident in his resolve, Falkner appreciated his careful determination to set up the fight to their advantage. Not enough to compliment the arrogant man, who only dug in his side with each word he uttered in the gym leader’s direction. They needed to open his eyes, pressure Crow to keep his resolve through their most challenging moments and help crack through that arrogance. It would help the would-be great trainer further down the road when that arrogance would flip them on their backs and fry them in the proverbial pan. Pidgeotto whipped up a flurry of sands that scratched at Dart as soon as she landed high above and attempted to ‘roost’. “Close…but its not the same.” Falkner smirked with a wide smile. “Would you like to see Pidgeotto demonstrate what the move actually looks like?” Falkner offered with a grand wave to his colorful bird of prey, who gave a sharp trill and puffed its chest feathers up proudly. “Looks like we need to replan this. Gust, quick, and regain some of the ground lost after that miraculous healing!” Falkner called to Pidgeotto, who immediately switched gears and fanned the flames to cause the winds to become harsh once more, so it would rip and tear at Dart’s precious feathers. Dart shook off the dirt in frustration, tired of the pesky bird constantly disrupting her attempts to fix her feathers during brief moments of peace. With a determined leap from her perch, she landed on the ground below, awaiting her trainer's command to deal with the troublesome fledgling.
Crow's grin slowly faded as he observed Falkner's persistence. How could he jest about Dart effortlessly shaking off the damage inflicted upon her after enduring relentless attacks? Crow knew that a single command for a Rock Throw would swiftly subdue the Pidgeotto. He couldn't understand how Falkner, the Gym Leader, remained unfazed by that fact.
Impatience brewed within Crow; he yearned to confront the Rocket Grunts and obtain the badge he needed. - Fine, go ahead, show us how you Roost! - he snapped with a hint of anger. - Prolong the inevitable! I have nothing better to do than entertain you all afternoon! Forget about those kids waiting - not like they're going to make it to the League anyway, right?! - Crow continued, venting his frustration with sharp arm gestures, signaling to his Bombirdier to pay attention. - Bury that Pidgeotto! Rock Throw! - he commanded, and in an instant, Dart seized two boulders, one with each talon, burying her claws for better grip before soaring high into the air. At the peak of the Gym, the Bombirdier somersaulted, swinging her long powerful red legs, and hurled both stones one after the other with tremendous strength, aiming at the chunky brown bird.
