With two badges and two totems under her belt, Freya decided to backtrack. She had hurried forward very quickly in her excitement, but there were so many pokemon in this region she had yet to see. Pokemon that these amulets were said to attract. She looked down at her wrist where the Z-Ring was secured and then to the keychain of sorts that she held that had the trial amulets. She wasn't sure if there was more she could do to 'lure' out those non-native pokemon, but hey, here was to experimenting!
Baxy was on her heels as always, grumbling about the warm weather and how weak all the pokemon in this forest were.
"Not like you have wanted to battle since we came here," Freya lightly teased the frigibax, who huffed and turned up her nose. Not deigning to respond. "Yeah, yeah, all beneath you. I'm sure that scyther would have given you a challenge."
<Tch. Why would I want to waste my time on a bug?>
"All I hear is that you were afraid you'd loooose~"
Baxy bit Freya's ankle.
"Okay...maybe I deserved that. Owie," she hopped a bit, giggling to escape the little dragon's jaws. "And besides, you're not that only one who needs to train. Gotta give the little leagues a chance to get stronger! Now c'mon. Let's go find us some pokemon!"

The warm weather was a delight to the wild Pokemon that frolicked along Route 29. Several small rodents darted through the tall emerald grasses. Their squeaks rang in the air with a strange melody, blending with the raucous chirps calling from the canopies above. Short, pink winged birds darted through the tangle of thick branches, plucking branches and vines off nearby plants, and tucking them into the makeshift nests they built. Small reddish-pink caterpillars with sharp yellow horns crawled slowly up the rough barky trunks of tall oaks. Something landed on the ground in the distance. A natural course of action for the area. It was a small brown bird with a rich tan underside and tan tips on its wings. One sharp talon pierced into the small hide of a caterpillar, who screamed in pain as it thrashed about underneath the weight of the wild bird’s claws. “Leave me alone!” The reddish-pink caterpillar cried, begging for its life. “I have two little ones in my nest! What will they do if they hatch and I’m not there?!” The bird laughed. It pecked at the Wurmple but missed each time, as the small caterpillar managed to thrash just out of the way. When Freya and her team stumbled upon the scene, it would spook Pidgey, who spun around wildly and kicked up a whirlwind of dirt and debris. “You need to leave now!” It squawked loudly. Pidgey flapped its wings rapidly as it kicked up the sand, sending the gritty debris spiraling into Freya’s face. They were going to let its meal get away! When Pidgey glanced back towards the Wurmple it’d managed to pin down, it noticed the small creature nearly a yard away and scooting up the base of a nearby tree. “That’s just great. Look at what you did?! That was breakfast! You’ll pay for that!” Pidgey threatened Freya. A Wild Pidgey Appeared! Level 5. What will Freya and her team do? Nature was sometimes cruel but—
"Hey! That was wholly unnecessary!" she bickered back at the bird. Freya rubbed her eyes, grumbling under breath as she tried to wipe the sand out. Urg. How unpleasant. Fumbling at her belt, she released a pokemon. It was Marill who emerged with a cheerful cry. Eyes watering, it was hard to see, but she doubted the pidgey would be a real threat to the aqua mouse as they'd recently done some training. Honestly, this whole route should be relatively harmless to her crew. "Marill, use aqua jet! Don't let it kick sand in your eyes."
She knew that as a marill, even with huge power, she wouldn't hit very hard. That was why they were working towards evolution. But for now, it was enough to handle a low level, first route bird with a bad attitude and a grudge.
Marill puffed her cheeks and focused on the pidgey in front of her, ears flicking and tail bobbing.
<You were so mean to my trainer! She's crying!> Marill puffed.
"Not crying! Eyes watering because dirt hurts." Sniff. Her nose was running now too. Very inelegant. At least her mascara was water proof. Otherwise that would be running down her cheeks, making it look like she just had a bad break up when paired with her red eyes. Freya pulled out a cloth and tried to blot the sand out, wiping her face gently. She didn't want to smudge her make up either, because she worked dark hard on her conturing and eye shadow this morning dangit! Just because you were traveling didn't mean you couldn't look put together and cute!
Marill, ignoring her trainer's insistence that was fine, let out an angry cry as water formed around her. The large bubble rippled for a moment before she launched as fast as a blink at the bird, trying to knock it out of the air so it couldn't cause any more havoc today.
Freya coughed a bit as she cleared her throat and got her eyes working again. There. Hm. "Since this pidgey has such a bad attitude, I don't want it following me." She pulled out a pokeball and took aim. When it looked like she would have a clear shot, she would hurl the ball at that angry bird who decided to pick a fight with a passerby over a lunch that Freya had no idea she had disrupted by existing.

The feathery avian soared up to the tallest branch on a nearby oak tree and puffed its feathers up. These mean creatures were trying to gaslight it into believing that it was the mean one?! Since when did Pidgey go around interrupting everyone else’s meal?! Meanwhile, Pidgey’s meal was somewhere far off in the trees, safe once again thanks to the loud and noisy interruptions of careless humans. When would they ever learn? “You’re the bullies from where I’m sitting!” The feathery pigeon screeched, flapping its wings wildly at its side. Before Pidgey could say much more, a powerful blast of water shot from Marill’s mouth. It was a long jettison whose pressure knocked the small avian off its perch. Pidgey flopped to the ground, feathered ruffled and disarrayed. It rolled back over and plucked many of the worst ones off, while patting others back down in place, with its stubby beak. “That’s not cool! Now, you’re asking to see my bad side!” Pidgey swooped up once more, kicking up bits of sand and dust that it flung at Marill, managing to get many of the gritty pieces lodged in the corner of her eyes. It didn’t expect the small red-and-white spherical device that Freya would immediately lodge at its head. “Have you learned your lesson yet?!” It screamed just as a blast of red light sucked it inside of the Poke Ball. The device fell down amongst a thick clump of dandelions and rolled about in the tall emerald grasses. One… Surely, the wild avian didn’t want to be taken off with such rude individuals. Two… There was no way it would allow this bully to keep it! Three… But maybe…they had food where they were going? Would that make it worth it? Ding! Pidgey would eventually give up the fight, and accept its new fate. Marill gained 2 levels! Marill increased to Level 11! "Good job, marill! Look at you, getting so strong."
Freya walked over to pick up the ball, shaking her head. Like the last pidgey she caught, this one didn't exactly seem to be a good fit for her or her team. Perhaps she would find a nice home for it elsewhere. For now, however, she would continue looking for pokemon in the area to see if she could spot some of those rare pokemon from far away. Surely they'd show up if she gave it a litle time. Pidgey were super common, finding one first was to be expected. With a smile, she returned to her hunt, wandering up and down the route, a skip to her step.
She kept an eye out for signs of alola pokemon that were lured by the totem, but she sadly didn't see any. Patience. She had to practice patience. As she passed close to New Bark, looking for pokemon, she spotted a sign board and decided to wander over to it and look at the papers pinned to the front. Oh. There were some jobs listed here. Hm.
"The Pokemon Rangers's beloved Fennekin has disappeared. Will give a reward for its safe return," she read aloud. "I suppose I can keep my eye out for the fennekin while I'm looking for other pokemon. Might as well since I don't know how long I'll be here." With a shrug, Freya scanned a few more listings with little interest before turning to return to her circuit up and down the route. It was a beautiful day. She saw many young kids running around, showing off the bug pokemon they caught. Others had rats or birds. It filled her heart with a certain fondness. Hopefully no little kids ran up to her with their freshly caught bugs. She...probably wouldn't be the best fight for them to have if they wanted to keep their self esteem intact.
Unlike Rockets or that red-headed thief, she didn't exactly enjoy stomping all over strangers for fun.
"Now. Where or where would I be if I was a pokemon exotic to the area...probably somewhere with lots of shelter and food." Hm. Maybe over here? Where there were some bushes that had berries on them? That seemed like a good place for a pokemon to shelter and get a snack to fill its belly. "Helllooooo?"
Baxy just rolled her eyes at her trainer.

Route 29 remained a lively and bustling route as small children ran past Freya in hot pursuit of their own Pokemon journeys. Some were wailing their hearts out over purple rats and brown feathered birds besting them in their first ‘real’ match, whilst other cheered loudly over their relative successes of filling their team with new members. One child chased a strange looking weasel around the areas screaming at the top of his lungs and pelting small red-and-white balls pathetically in every direction but the wild Pokemon’s. “JUST GET IN THE BALL ALREADY!” The child screamed at the top of his lungs. Well… that was definitely his very last ball that bounced against a large oak tree and broke into two distinct and useless pieces. The ten year old’s bright emerald eyes watered before he stomped off further down the route, griping about how this was some fresh Tauros manure and how he never really wanted to own such a useless Bulbasaur to begin with, dragging said bulbous plant behind him tethered on a long rope. “This place sucks, Bulby, let’s go somewhere where our talents can be ‘preciated!” He huffed and puffed angrily. Meanwhile, the strange looking weasel dived into the safety of a large bush, its heart racing loudly in his chest. It huffed and puffed large pocket fulls of air. Wide eyes searched nervously in every direction, worried about the arrival of the strange kid once more. Its lungs BURNED from the effort of just breathing. When Freya went poking her head around the bush, Yungoos launched itself with a mouth full of teeth at her face. If she didn’t react fast and back up, it was fully ready to sink all of its sharpened teeth on her nose. “LEAVE ME ALONE ALREADY, I DON’T WANT TO GO WITH YOU, YOU STUPID CHILD!” It hissed loudly at the top of its lungs. Well THAT was quite a show. Freya frowned at the display. That WAS NOT how trainers were supposed to react. Marill, who was out and about with her, apparently decided to take matters into her own little paws. With puffed cheeks, she chased after the small child the moment Freya's back was turned and she checked in the bush for pokemon.
"EEEEK!" Freya yelped in alarm as she threw herself back onto her back to avoid those teeth. Yungoos! She knew these pokemon from her journey in paldea! That had a nasty bite. One even latched onto her ankle when she was a novice trainer and she had to run back to the school with a bleeding leg. "Hey! Hey! Calm down! I'm not going to hurt you!" She held her arm up defensively, the one with the totem amulets dangling off her wrist. "Shhhh. Hey, it's okay. The kid has run off, it's just me and marill...?" Pause. "Where did you go marill?"
A little further down the path, where the kid and his leashed bulbasaur were heading down, Marill was plotting revenge for the yungoos. She got behind him, nodded at the bulbasaur that was being dragged by the rope lead, before engulfing herself in water. Like a speeding bullet, marill threw herself with enthusiasm at the back of the boy, hoping to show him what it's like to be smacked around by something. REPEATEDLY. HARD. She was a lil bigger than a pokeball, but to be fair, he was bigger than a yungoos. It totally evened out in the end.
The marill's next lunge was for the lead. She aqua jetted into the lead to snap it. Be free bulbasaur! Be free!
<Take that you meanie!> The marill puffed.
Still by the bush, Freya needed a pokemon between her and the angry yungoos so she sent out orthworm.
"Maybe we can be friends?" Freya negotiated. "I won't throw any pokeballs at you. Here." She slid one on the ground towards the youngoos. "I'll even let you choose if you want to come along! If you do want to come with me, I'll make sure nobody chases you around like that ever again, okay?"
Orthworm stared at the yungoos with curiosity. As it had hatched from an egg and never really battled, it was still very curious about the world.
<You look scared and angry> Orthworm observed a little sadly.

The bulbasaur looked surprised at Marill as she darted past it, frowning a little bit uncertain as her nod had seemed like she was trying to communicate something with it. It jumped startled when she came shooting past it and splashed into the boy and soaked him to the bone by an instant. It's surprise was nothing compared to the young trainer ofcourse. "AAAAAHH! I'M ATTACKED BY A RAPID POKEMON! GET IT OFF!" He screamed and jumped around flailing his arms as he tried to shake off the round water type and protect his head at the same time. As Marill shooted down again to remove the leash it would be clear it had been dropped the moment she had attacked the boy, it would probably have worked better to do it the other way around. If she aimed too much on the leash she even risked getting tangled into it herself. Bulbasaur, being a bred and well trained pokemon finally went into action and jumped between the now wailing kid who was half running away from the scene, and the marill. The grass type looked over its shoulder guiltily, "he's been so weird since we ran into that strange fire breather," it mumbled before turning to Marill with a worried expression. "What did you do that for?" It asked confused, knowing very well it had reacted too late and that its trainer would expect it to be battling this wild unruly water type by now. Yungoos was anything but ready to listen, the moment Orthworm appeared it slammed into it with a weak tackle. It staggered back, weak from the exhaustion of the recent getaway, had the kid hit it with a pokeball it would surely have been caught. It took a moment to take a few deep breaths then it saw the pokeball on the ground and its eyes widened in shock. LEAVE ME ALONE! it screech, clearly haven't heard a thing Freya had said. It wacked the side of the pokeball and sent it crashing into a tree, then it interrupted Orthworm with a wordless scream as it lunged at the worm letting out all its frustration on her. <Strange fire breather?> Marill asked the bulbasaur. <I think my trainer is looking for a fire pokemon that got lost out here or something.> Pause. She posed. <And I am here to help show that big bully he shouldn't be so mean to pokemon! He harassed that poor yungoos and he's pulling you around by the neck. You should like...pick him up by the ankles and shake him or something. Just until all his lunch money falls out his pockets.>
She bounced a bit in anticipation, clearly not looking to battle at all. Her tail bobbed. Her ears twitched. She puffed her cheeks.
<My trainer is trying to comfort that poor wild pokemon on top of trying to find that fire pokemon. So, since she's so busy, I have to step up.>
Marill was quite reasonable and rational when she wasn't playing hero. There was that at least.
Over by the yungoos, Freya flounder backwards again as the weasel freaked. Orthworm, the poor thing, was pounced and suffered being pounced. Repeatedly. She shook the yungoos off, slamming her foe on top of a pokeball that had rolled out of Freya's bag when she stumbled over.

Bulby’s eyes widened at Marill’s accusations. His trainer was really young and had thought himself on top of the world before they ran into the fire breather. It burned most of Bulby’s leaves, and when his trainer rushed back to the nearby Pokecenter, Nurse Joy scolded the lad for challenging a Pokemon so much stronger and riskier with Bulby. “Why would I shake him for his lunch money?” He asked, a vine popping out to rub the underside of his chin. “He’s just trying to take Nurse Joy’s advice in making me stronger and adding more members to his team.” He pointed out. Orthworm slammed into her opponent with a powerful burst, knocking Yungoos through the grass. Panting and angry, Yungoos broke free for a second as Orthworm tried to wrap back around it and leered at Orthworm angrily with chattering teeth. “You’re just going to let the kid get away! Why are you so insistent on stealing me from my home?!” But it would be too late, as Yungoos was immediately snatched up and slammed on top of a red-and-white ball that easily zapped it inside. A couple wiggles and she would hear the satisfying ding of success. The boy sniffled as he hid behind a large log, hugging his feet to his chest. He was no Pokemon Trainer and would be nothing like Lance or Alder. He grew up watching so many of his idols on television leading their Pokemon to victory without even breaking a sweat. And he couldn’t even help Bulby be her very best version of herself, nor could he catch a single other Pokemon to add to his team. “Mom was right!” He cried loudly to himself. “I shoulda stayed in school and became something useless like a Doctor. I don’t have what it takes to be a trainer!” The young kid sobbed. Orthworm gained 3 levels. Orthworm increased to Level 11!Marill gained 1 level. <He was doing it allll wrong.> Marill shook her head. Though she had the good grace to actually look a little guilty when the kid started to cry. Oopsie. <W-well. He seems repentant now. But he should not harass pokemon if he wants to make friends and build a team. And who drags around a companion on a rope like that?> She motioned at the 'leash' on the bulbasaur. Bred for battles and not for docile attributes, the marill was lot more...spunky than the docile bulbasaur, who was bred to be a good, constant companion to a child.
Her tail flicked.
<So, which way did the fire breather go?> The sun was starting to go down. They were losing precious daylight to find this firebreather pokemon. It had to be on this route somewhere, but it was potentially small and fast and clever. That was why Freya had been peeking into bushes.
Speaking of Freya...
When the yungoos vanished into a ball, she straightened up and collected her things, comforting the orthworm as well with some pats. "Thanks for that, friend. It almost hurt me... but I was being foolish. I have been bitten by one of those before and almost had a new scar on my face for my carelessness." She stood up. "...Where did Marill go?" With the Orthworm at her side, she wandered down the route a little until she heard crying...
Then she ran...spotting an upset child and her marill chattering with a bulbasaur. Oh dear.
She trotted forward, "There you are! You shouldn't wander like that." She scooped her pokemon.

The last of the sun’s rays slowly climbed beyond the horizon line, leaving the once brilliantly blue skies to churn into bright streaks of reds and yellows that eventually died down into deep purple and blue recesses. Many of the daily creatures that once inhabited the open woody route crawled off into their makeshift nests or dens, ready to snooze away the night until they could awaken, refreshed and alive for another day. As feathery birds darted into the canopies above and bushy-tailed brown meerkats darted off into underground tunnels, slowly the night creatures would emerge. Most were similar counterparts to their daytime companions, creating this seemingly strange atmosphere that these creatures remained steadfastly awake at all hours of the day. Bright pink exoskeletons scurried along the ruddy barks of ancient and young trees alike, happily munching on their soft green leaves. They only stopped, wide eyes surveying their surroundings quietly, in case of lurking predators ready to pluck them from their homes. Furry purple rodents still shot through tall emerald blades with loud squeaks, their long tails waving like banners above the grass. The young kid turned to Freya and leaped instantaneously, clinging to the mother-like figure with their two tiny, pudgy hands. “I SUCK AS A TRAINER! I’LL NEVER BE LIKE LANCE! I SHOULDA LISTENED TO MY MOMMA AND NOW I CAN’T EVEN FIND MY WAY HOME! THAT STUPID DOG TRIED TO BITE ME AND CHASED ME ALL THE WAY OUT HERE! WAAAAAAHHHHHH!” He sniveled and sneezed, large snot bubbles layered with nasty buggars forming out of his nostrils. Something stirred quietly just a pace away from Freya and her team, trying to lay low as it listened to the strange human child screaming and wailing like a banshee in the night. It’s strange, hypnotic eyes never faltered. But darkness was upon them and given the nature of the night, was it possible that the bits of fur and tail playing seek-a-boo through the grass were a strange blondish yellow, like a certain fire-breathing fox? Should Freya interrupt the moment to check it out, perhaps only disappointment would stare back at her as the Patrat would then stand fully erect to point to her accusingly. “You! Face me like a real warrior or give me all your numnums. I desire sustenance now, woman!” It snapped, like some 1950s family sitcom. A Wild Patrat Appeared! Level 2. What will Freya do? Freya was suddenly assailed by a crying child who was snotty and whining about his mom and Lance. She blinked and squirmed awkwardly, trying to pry the child off of her leg before he got her clothes covered in goo. "Um. There, there, don't cry..." She looked down at the bulbasaur, "This is your new partner, right? Maybe they can help you get home. I mean, it's a path. You just gotta keep walking..." Then again, he had been pulling the bulbasaur around by a rope, so she wasn't sure how agreeable the grass type was right now. But it looked really calm and the leash looked...broken?
She slowly set Marill on the ground to have both hands to pry said child off.
It was then she saw the shift something in the bushes. Fur...
"Hm? Dog bit you? Wait. What did the dog look like? Did it breathe fire and have pointy ears and a fluffy tail—"
Then the pokemon in the bushed lunged out and began to make demands. Freya's expression twitched and then she began to snicker, "Oh. Aren't you funny!" It was at that moment one of her pokeballs burst open an Star made an appearance. Adrian warned her that the clefable had been popping out of pokeballs and doing what she pleased since she was a cleffa. "Oh, hello Star. Out enjoying the twilight?"
<The moon and stars rise. They remind me of home.> She giggled and threw something at the patrat. A pokeball. Where did she get that?! <Come, new friend, join us!>

"But I don't know which way is hooooome!" The kid wailed, but a tad less hysterical than before. At least he wasn't alone now, and Freya, no matter how uncomfortable she was with the situation sounded calm and reassuring, and she was an adult. Adults always solved the problem and made things good again. He calmed down so much he actually accepted to let her pry his hands off her pants and he instantly used them to wipe the gooey off his nose, and got his hands and sleeves covered in the process. He sent her an incredulously look, "How should it could help me? It's a pokemon, it just do what I say," he said and his lip began to quiver, "and I don't know what to do.." The bulbasaur shook its head tiredly and gave the kid a gentle pat with a vine. "Yeah, it spit fire and my bulbasaur got burned and I lost the battle, and I got lost and I miss mommy. I just wanna go hoome," he began to cry quietly, wiping tears off his chin with the same sleeves and hands he had just used to clean the boogers off with. "I'm so bad at being a trainer.""It's a pretty spot on description, how did your trainer know?" The bulbasaur would ask Marill and looked over its shoulder, perhaps in the direction they had encountered it? Then the patrat jumped out to challenge them. "AAAAH! IT*S HERE! IT'S HERE TO BURN ME TOO! NOOOOO!" The kid screamed and leaped to clung at Freya's pants once again, hiding his face in the cloth. The patrat winced at the sudden sound and then glared at Star. "I'm no friend of yours! Battle me or give me your numnums, your edibles, your hunger satisfiers! Or you'll discover why my hunger for battles is inextinguishable! You will feel my wraith! You will...!" It's monolog got cut short by the pokeball which confirmed the capture without even shaking. Star grows +1 level to [Lv 10]! <Oh, our trainer knows what the fire doggy looks like because we are looking for it too.> Marill explained. <There was a notice on one of those big boards in town. The ones trainers look at sometimes that are covered in papers. She said something about a missing fennekin and how we can keep an eye out for it while we're here...doing whatever it is we're doing.> Marill was honestly a little at a loss for the finer details of why they were on this route so long. The pokemon weren't very strong.
Clearly it wasn't for training.
<No doubt she seeks that which has not seen before. Like our new friend there.> Star points out, interjecting herself into the conversation as Freya caught the patrat.
"Easy, kid, this isn't the pokemon that attacked you earlier, nor can it breathe fire. It's pretty harmless actually, especially compared that yungoos you upset earlier by being too rough." Freya said, awkward still as she scooped up the ball. She then checked her pokegear. "Hm. Still says I have yet to see all the pokemon in the area." She knew there were wurmples around, but none had crossed her path, and there were reports of spindas as well. Neither were of strong interest, at least compared to the pokemon that could supposedly only be found here at night with the amulet. "Now...you said you don't know which way is home. If you want to go back to New Bark where you got your bulbasaur, it is that way, straight down the path. And if you want to go to Cherrygrove, you go this way...straight down the path."
