Mateo Cortés Age: 20 Gender: Male Trainer Type: Gardener Hometown: Arrowroot Town, Sinnoh Goal: To experience the beauty of Johto and open a community garden in honour of his mother. |
Appearance
Tall and lanky are pretty much the only things that stand out about Mateo. Well, other than his eyes which are an almost unnatural golden colour. But beyond that, he's as basic a human as one could be, with short messy hair and a fair complexion to him. You'd think he'd have a tan with all the gardening he does but to his dismay he burns easily instead. It's a 50/50 on whether the sheen on him is from sweat or sunscreen. Thin, faint scars can be seen on his hands as well; remnants of working with thorns without gloves on.
Clothes-wise Mateo loves his layers. As he hails from the Sinnoh region with its cooler climate, a long sleeve undershirt with another shirt on top is common for him to wear. Cargo pants adorn his legs for the convenience of pockets. A scarf or bandanna is normally hung around his neck, pulled up to cover the bottom half of his face when the chill gets harsh. Hidden underneath is a locket he never removes.
Personality
Thrill-seeking. Outgoing. Competitive. These are the last traits you'd see from someone who plants flowers as a hobby, but Mateo would be the first to say he would've become some kind of athlete if he didn't already have another goal in mind.
Despite this though, he seizes every opportunity given to him as his way of living life to the fullest, never one to turn down a challenge. He can be reckless when he does this; biting more than he can chew because he didn't stop to think about why a challenge was a challenge. At least he's good at working under pressure.
The guy is down to earth as well, one to go with the flow and rarely shaken up by what the world throws at him. The outbursts he does get into are in jest so as to entertain whoever he's with. He's silly and he knows it; even taking pride in the fact. Who doesn't like to make people smile?
Overall Mateo's a glass-half-full sort of person, and his strength lies in adaptation. He's just venturing out on his own for the first time but he knows the experience will give him everything he needs. Even though he's not aware of what he needs yet.
History
Mateo was born to a very small family that consisted of only himself and his mother. His father was nowhere to be seen, with questions of his whereabouts only answered vaguely with a sad smile on the her face. It didn't take long for the boy to notice the pain she hid underneath. Couple this with the mixture of scorn and anger from their neighbours whenever the man was brought up, and the fact Mateo bore his mother's last name instead of his father's, and he learned that finding out simply wasn't worth the suffering the man caused.
In any case, the lives they led was a simple one. Mateo's mother had a green thumb that was revelled. She used it to provide produce for the rest of the town, and even taught the other residents how to grow their own gardens. Mateo hadn't had much interest in it initially, preferring to play street games with the other kids, but he always found himself sitting beside her as they tended to their own crops. They were closely knit. One couldn't be mentioned without the other.
When his mother grew ill, Mateo distanced himself from his friends, as caring for her was his new priority. He became the new breadwinner of the family, taking odd jobs from those who knew him well and wanted nothing more than to see his mother in good health. He wanted that too, missing her whenever he had to tend to the garden on his own.
But she didn't get better. It was during one night he spent by her bedside, when she spoke of how beautiful her home was and how much she wanted her son to see it, that he knew he would lose her.
The town came together for the funeral, and witnessed how closed off Mateo became after. What was once a goofy loud guy barely spoke at all, only leaving the house to let her pokemon catch the sun's rays. For all the misery he felt, the last thing he wanted was for her friends to hurt because of him. It took a lot of time and support from his neighbours for him to realize they didn't want that for him either.
Eventually, Mateo agreed with them that staying in the house alone wasn't healthy. He even went one step further. Entrusting his mother's pokemon to his family friends, he packed lightly and boarded a ship to a place she's always wanted him to go.
Johto.
