<Sympathy? Empathy? I don't think humans are capable of it. They just want you to do tricks for meager scraps of food. And sometimes, you don't even get the food. You don't even realize that you're in the same situation, but you can't get away. You're stuck in that ball and with that human and are just too brainwashed to realize it. So no, I won't fall for any of your manipulations! I will not stand for any more harassment or to be demeaned further!> That was when the flames shot at it. The sentret instinctively curled up to brace against the heat, protecting its belly and sensitive ears from the fire. When the onslaughed ended, it unfurled and glared. <This is what your human wanted, isn't it? For me to roll over? Do some tricks? Will you both just get lost now?!> Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Sentret LV 8 HP 77% [20/26]

Alexi stepped back at the sight of piercing glare, a hint of doubt entering her head as she heard the Sentret's aggressive rebuttal. Was continuing this battle really the best option in this situation, or would it be better to heed the mammal's request and simply leave? Why was this simple battle suddenly getting so morally complicated? "Char..."
"Alexi, please hold in there," Rory said in response to her partner's quavering sigh. "I know this may not exactly feel 'right,' and I don't love it anymore than you do... But I'm worried what may happen to others if we let this little Sentret continue on in this rage, and since neither of us seem to be having any positive effect with our words, we just have to keep battling on..."
A silent shared glance between trainer and Pokémon was all that Alexi needed to understand a need for a shift in strategy. Tail dropping low to hover just above the ground, the Fire-type let the flames begin to build once more within her small chest as her uncertain eyes remained locked on the angry mammal. This time, she wouldn't be letting these embers loose until Sentret came in close on the offensive, rather than try to get in close herself. "We're not here to harass you, Sentret... We just want to help you calm down. But if you continue to try attacking us, we will defend ourselves."

There was something there that hit home just then. The sentry pokemon's long ears flicked. Lips parsed and brow furrowed, Sentret uncurled a bit from its defensive posture only lightly singed by the most recent spew of fire sent its direction. Catching the long look between them, the rodent continued watching Alexi holding back the readied lick of flame. It replayed the tone of the trainer's voice. Even if it didn't understand all the words, it had to admit there was a familiarity there; and it didn't match that of the kids. Sentret huffed and rolled its tail beneath itself to push itself up higher. The wild pokemon took a second to take note that it wasn't surrounded anymore. It wasn't backed into a corner. "Then I go," it snapped. Tiny paws flexing as it balanced itself on its bulky tail it certainly didn't do anything to reduce its hostile posture. The scout just grumpily stared. It was clearly unwilling to turn its back first, though it did after half a moment slightly adjust its positioning so it could see its desired escape route at the same time as keep an eye on Alexi. But that left it blind to something else. "Tackle!" A high-pitched squeak of a voice erupted from further down the lane; just around the building. Immediately Sentret's body shuddered and twisted around to get a view of what was coming up behind it. It hissed as a similarly coloured pokemon rammed into it. They both tumbled and lashed at each other for a full spin before disengaging. "Yeah! Get 'im Casper with some sand!" A young boy with backwards cap came plodding up with total focus on the wild sentret. His zigzagoon was eager to follow through after receiving some good long scratches across her nose. Sentret hissed and flailed, making the decision to escape up the nearest tree. Its eyes burned with the sand thrown at it so didn't make it far, but was obviously having some difficulty with going much further without addressing the problem. The youngster complimented his pokemon before turning to Rory. "Oh! Sorry, I didn't mean to take your battle. You were teaching that wild pokemon a lesson too? I don't think you'd wanna catch that one, it just scratched my little brother bad."[attr=class, flipX] A Youngster and his Zigzagoon♀ [Lv 7] are attacking Sentret! Alexi's jaw dropped open in shock, the flames she'd been holding in now flying aimlessly through the air as she saw the Sentret and Zigzagoon go tumbling together across the ground. Regardless of what the Scout Pokémon may have done to this trainer's younger brother, who more than likely deserved the bite in the first place, it definitely didn't deserve to be blindsided like this. The spray of sand that followed, practically blinding the poor Normal-type who'd very nearly gotten away to safety, brought out a deep growl from the young Charmander. Dashing ahead on all fours, she slid between the two mammals and gave Zigzagoon the fiercest glare she could muster as her flame-tipped tail swayed overhead.
"I can understand that you're upset over Sentret biting your brother," Rory began, walking up to stand beside Alexi and provide Sentret with further protection. She was feeling a very rare surge of anger, the strong emotion bubbling up from beneath the depths of her generally calm and quiet demeanor. "But I saw how your brother and the rest of that crowd were mistreating that poor Pokémon, and quite honestly, I'm glad that Sentret at least made an effort to stand up for itself one of the only ways it could.
"I'm sorry your younger brother was hurt, but even that is no excuse for blindsiding a Pokémon with two attacks in a row," While they had been holding back against Sentret, and even Spearow before, it felt like now was a time for her and Alexi to really let their power show. Taking on a power pose, with legs apart and arms crossed over her chest, the teenage girl felt as ready as ever for battle. "You and your Zigzagoon won't be giving this Sentret any more trouble, and we'll be making sure of that as your new opponents. Alexi, let's start off with a Scratch!"
As her small sharp claws took on a bright white glow, Alexi lunged toward the Tiny Raccoon Pokémon, the newfound purpose of defending Sentret against this unexpected foe filling her with new strength.

"What does it matter?" the youngster brashly demanded. "If a wild pokemon attacks your family, you make sure it knows better than to do it again. Why does it matter if the battle is fair or not? It's mean and it scratches and bites and deserves it!" The kid was young and clearly didn't have a well-developed moral compass yet. He stuck his chin up and crossed his arms stubbornly. "Just let us finish chasing it off since you're not gonna!" And that was when the order of scratch was called out. "Hey! Okay, that's it. I was sorry to steal your battle, but I'm not sorry about battling you now since you started it!" he stomped a foot with a pout. "Casper, use tail whip!" that cute act always got pokemon to put down their guard so the next hits were even stronger! Casper did as he was told, waggling his tail cutely as those claws raked down his side. Ouch! <Hey, chill out. We're all friends here,> Casper tried to say, offering a disarming, goofy grin at Alexi. As Alexi momentarily paused at the sight of Casper waving his tail, she felt an odd sensation washing over her and a feeling that any future attacks from the Zigzagoon would be hitting her slightly harder than before. Shaking of this distraction, the Charmander responded to the goofy grin with a stern expression of her own. "Sorry, but I'm not interested in friendship after you attacked Sentret like that, especially when he had not done anything at all to you."
"Sorry, but you're going to be the only one getting chased off today," Rory responded in a quiet yet unnaturally unfriendly tone of voice, wanting to maintain the momentum of her newfound confidence in order to finish this battle as soon as possible for Sentret's sake. "Alright, Alexi! Follow up with Ember, and try to keep your distance from Casper!"
Just as she had prior to the Zigzagoon's initial interruption, Alexi summoned forth flames that gathered and grew within her chest as she awaited the perfect moment to release a flurry of embers upon her opponent...

<Attacked sentret like that? Man, you're really mad I stole your battle, huh?> Casper didn't seem to understand Alexi's issue. <It scratched a human. My human asked me to hit them back for it. I mean, makes sense to me. Battles are the only way we get stronger, and that sentret should learn to leave humans alone...> His tail flicked and he meeped when Alexi spewed flames. He couldn't avoid them, even when he hit the ground in a 'sploot', trying his darndest to get as flat as possible. Alas, his fluffiness betrayed him and he found his tail on fire! Eep! He started to run around in erratic circles, his path leading to him slamming to Alexi more on happenstance than actually on purpose. They both ended up tumbling to the ground in a tangle, his singed fur no longer smoking once the flames were snuffed out by the dust. <Phew...that could have ended up badly!> "Wait? Me? What did I do??? I didn't do anything wrong!" the kid argued. Trainer Battle Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Casper LV 7 HP 21% [5/24]

"It's not just you," Rory began, her logical side coming through to temporarily calm the frustrated teenager as she reminded herself of why she was aggressively picking this fight with the youngster. "I'm fighting for Sentret because I seem to be the only person around here who is interested in showing him some genuine kindness. All those people who were here before, your brother included, were taking advantage of this wild Pokémon's willingness to perform... but no rewards, whether treats or praise, were ever given as the demands just kept coming and coming ever faster until Sentret finally reached his breaking point, as anyone would have in such a situation. It's no wonder that he lashed out and bit someone, what with the complete lack of respect."
"Or maybe, humans like your trainer and the people who were here before should learn to leave Pokémon like Sentret alone if they aren't going to treat them with respect" Alexi began, continuing a conversation of her own with Casper while Rory spoke with the Zigzagoon's trainer, sensing a temporary pause had come over the battle. "Battle's also aren't just for growing stronger or getting revenge. We were only battling Sentret to help him calm down, not to cause him more harm as you intended to. Even so, it's just not right to blindside someone like that who wasn't causing you any harm in the first place. You were only making the situation worse!"
"All Pokémon, whether wild or tamed, have emotions and feelings of their own just like us, and they deserve to be treated as more than just play-things or tools or battling machines," Rory continued, her right hand instinctively reaching for smooth stone from the pouch at her hip, this time drawing out a flat triangular stone that she rotated and rubbed with her fingers as she took a deep breath in preparation for this battle's finale. She wasn't sure if Sentret was still behind her, or if he had made his escape either up into the tree or away into the tall grass, but she felt confident that her and Alexi's intervention had at least saved the Scout Pokémon from any further harm.
"The fact that you don't seem to understand the concept of respect for others any better than the crowd of people before you is why I interrupted your attack on Sentret to battle you directly, a battle that is just about to reach its end." Spoken in unison, Rory to the youngster and Alexi to Casper, the two females felt an empowering sense of synchronicity as they hoped to bring the battle to its end, the Charmander's tail-tip flaring up as they continued with a command. "It's time to end this with one more Ember!"

The youngster looked at Rory blankly while she monologued. "But.. it bit bit my little brother," he repeated as some sort of protest of his doing. "He's just a little kid! It can't go around and attack kids! That's dangerous, they don't know better!" He argued, "It's not like they hurt it! They just didn't understood what it was it expected! He's young, Casper plays with him all the time, how should he know it's different now?!" He pouted frustrated, he was just doing what a big bro was supposed to: protecting his younger siblings! Casper took the opportunity to lick his wounds like Alexi talked, it began to look a tad annoyed. "Get down from your high horse, will ya?" It growled at one point, "I'm just helping my trainer protecting his family, aren't you doing the same, even though you're blabbering about your way being the right one." It bristled annoyed, not happy about being accused of a lot of stuff it didn't think it had done, especially not when Alexi sounded like she thought she could do no wrong. When the charmander and her trainer began to talk in unison, only Casper understood them both, and it looked between them while its expression grew more and more weird and unnerved. It took a few steps back with a wrinkled nose, "you're crazy," it mumbled, laying its ears flat as the embers build in front of it. The youngster obviously didn't understood a thing about the two talking synchronically, he just got more angry with Rory's words. "I do! Why don't you understand it can't attack kids?!" He shouted at her and stomped a foot again, "if you won't teach it to stay away then I will! Casper! Tackle and end this!"The zigzagoon sent him a quick glance and only took a few steps forward before it got bathed in flames and collapsed on the ground. The youngster's mouth fell open. "Wha? How could that happen?" He asked dumbfounded before he sighed and recalled his normal type and stomped over to Rory, pulling a wad of bills from his pocket which he handed over. "I'm coming back and teaching it a lesson!" He declared sourly, but then added more hesitantly, "if its still here.."With a ducked head and hands in his pocket he shuffled away. In the tree the sentret had been watching closely, it was looking at Rory with new eyes. There was no doubt she had been defending it, but could that be right? Alexi won even with the changed opponent and grows +3 levels to [Lv 10]! She learns Smokescreen! The youngster admits defeat and hands over £246 Sentret might be open for joining if asked nicely.

As the thrill of the battle faded away at the youngster's departure, the reality of what Rory had just done came crashing in on her as her cheeks turned a deep red. "Oh my goodness... Oh gosh, I just monologued a poor kid who was only looking out for his family... and I showed no mercy. I was arrogant, full of myself, and talking as if I could do no wrong."
Rory then glanced down to find Alexi looking up at her with big eyes and a tilted head, as if the Charmander was unsure as to whether or not her trainer was alright. "Don't worry, Alexi, I'll be alright... I just kind of lost myself during that battle. The confidence was great, but then I became more arrogant and full of myself, talking as if I could do no wrong... and I don't like that. I don't want to be that kind of person, Alexi, nor do I want us to be that kind of team."
Amidst her emotional breakdown and quickly encroaching self-doubt, luring her toward a downward spiral of negativity and self-hate, an affectionate snuggle from the young Charmander served as a beacon of hope that everything would be alright in the end. After all, Rory thought as her mind began to clear, everybody makes mistakes sometimes. Nobody is perfect, and it was how one responded to their mistakes that really mattered in the end. And with that thought, the teenager drew out a slip of paper and pen from her backpack, using both to pen a quick note of apology to the Youngster for her overreactive behavior during their battle. She then choose a rather plain stone from her pouch to sacrifice for use as a paperweight, and thus left the note at the base of the tree where she hoped it would be found and read upon the boy's potential return.
With that taken care of and her conscience a little lighter, Rory stood and turned to leave, but a tug at her jeans from Alexi caused her to pause. Turning around to see what was the matter, the Charmander directed her eyes to look up into the tree... where she saw Sentret staring back at them! "Oh, Sentret! I almost forgot about you in this mess of emotions!
"I'm glad that you're okay, and I hope that my behavior against that Youngster didn't turn you against me, too.." Stepping a little bit closer as her voice trailed away, she continued speaking to the shy Scout Pokémon as Alexi climbed up to resume her perch across the trainer's shoulders. "I'm unsure if you would want to join me, or if we'd even be a good match for each other, but at the very least I'd like to help you get away from here just in case the boy does come back wanting to cause you further harm."
As Rory stretched her right arm out toward the Normal-type in what she hoped was a friendly gesture, a hopeful smile upon her face, Alexi turned to Sentret and said, "I can paraphrase if you need me to, but basically, we want to help you get safely away from this place, if you'll let us."

The sentret had indeed been watching this whole time as the human faced off with the other human and scolded him for his treatment of a wild pokemon that didn't really have any other defenders. His ears flatted against the back of his head as he observed, a pit swelling in its stomach as it bitterly considered the zigzagoon's words. Nobody was really on its side. This other human—who showed her pale mercy—would see reason and hate it too. Everyone did and— Suddenly the battle was over and the kid fled. The human approached it again, but without aggressive intent, explaining that she only wanted to get it away from this place. The sentret eyed her, considering, mistrustful. But it didn't want to be cornered and harassed again. It would be easier to just... leave, wouldn't it? With careful steps, it inched towards the human. And when a pokeball was offered, it would willingly go inside, the capsule barely wobbling.
Sentret decides to go with you! (-1 pokeball)

Sentret Name: Pip Gender: Male Level: 8 OT: Aurora Hawthorne Moves: Scratch, Defense Curl, Quick Attack Ability: Run Away Nature/Personality: Timid // Having been harassed to his breaking point by a group of increasingly demanding trainers, Pip is still wary of Rory but willing to give her a chance after she defends him from an angry youngster looking for revenge.
------
As Rory gently placed the Pokeball containing Sentret, who would henceforth be known as Pip, on her belt alongside five others, she became aware that she had in fact developed a full team through a variety of experiences since arriving in the Johto region.
First, there was her true first partner Pokemon, Alexi the Charmander, with whom she believed she felt the closest connection to thus far. As she gave the young yet mighty Fire-type an affectionate little scratch beneath the chin, Rory recalled how Alexi had helped them not only earn the trust of their newest companion Pip the Sentret, but also fought strategically against Hilda the Spearow when the Tiny Bird Pokémon had been rampaging through Professor Elm’s laboratory and relentlessly attacking the professor himself. Taking a moment to hold Hilda’s ball in her hand, Alexi curiously glancing at the red and white sphere from the teenager’s shoulder, Rory wondered if enough time had passed for the angry little bird to have calmed herself.
Returning Hilda’s ball to its spot on her belt, a small ‘click’ acknowledging its secure attachment, her mind then recalled the origins of her remaining three Pokémon, all of whom had originally belonged to other trainers she had met whilst on her way to New Bark Town. Puffball the Cottonee had been first, the jolly and exceptionally affectionate Grass/Fairy-type having unexpectedly crossed her path almost as if by fate. Then there was D'Artagnan the Ralts, a devoutly loyal and honorable little Psychic/Fairy-type with great potential to become a truly valuable member of the team. Finally, Puck the Morpeko, a mischievous little rodent with a knack for pushing Alexi’s buttons, had unexpectedly joined the team at the same time as D’Artagnan. If he had been sneakily handed off alongside the Ralts, well… Rory could definitely understand how the Two-Sided Pokémon wasn’t for everyone.
“I guess we’ve found ourselves quite the diverse group of friends, Alexi,” Rory said, the Charmander giving a yawn in response as she made herself comfortable sprawled across the girl’s shoulders, eyes slowly closing as the Lizard Pokémon allowed herself a chance to rest up from her third battle that day. “We’ll have to work on helping them all to grow stronger, as well as overcoming some trust issues… but I can see us growing to be a happy little family.”
A slight chill upon the breeze, momentarily bringing forth thoughts of her home back in Sinnoh’s Snowpoint City, led the seventeen year old to be thankful not only for her dark-wash bootcut jeans and cozy dark-purple knitted sweater but also the warmth radiating from Alexi’s softly snoozing body. Realizing, too, that they were still only mere feet from the entrance to Professor Elm’s lab despite so much having happened already, Rory wondered as she wandered through the small town whether anything else could possibly happen before she even took her first steps into Route 29.

One would think that getting out of New Bark would be the easiest part of this new journey. Of course, fate often had a sense of humor, and when one asked it questions of if or how, it would offer a solution that amused it the most. In this instance, what else could POSSIBLY happen? How about a spinda running around with a poor old woman's underthings on its head, a few other unmentionables gripped in its paws as it ran around a garden, the air starting to cool and become crisp with the first hints of a shifting season. Unbeknownst to the poor old woman, the spinda just wanted to make its den soft and cozy and warm, so when it happened upon her drying line with all these soft things dangling from it, well...it just had to do some gathering. It was in the middle of pilfering a pair of extra-large, silky knickers to line its nest when the woman came outside to collect her laundry. Then she started to scream, startling the little bear and causing it to pull the underwear down sharply and accidentally collapsing the whole line of clothing. Rory entered the scene as the bear grabbed up what it could before trying to flee. However, it struggled to see given its, ahem, covered head. "Come back with those, you little thief!" the lady shrieked, waving her walking stick and hobbling the spinda's way.

((OOC: Wow… what a naughty little little Spinda! xP))
“Ummm…” Rory began, a blush rising to her cheeks as she caught sight of the Spot Panda Pokémon wobbling along with a woman’s unmentionables upon its head and bundled in its arms, the presumed victim shrieking and hobbling after. “Of all the things I could have imagined happening next, not even my wildest ideas could have come close to this…”
Alexi yawned and stretched herself awake at the sound, her eyes suddenly growing large as her mind took in what she was seeing. While still relatively young and new to the world, the Charmander was quite certain that this wasn’t normal human behavior. She turned her head to the left, catching her teenage trainer’s eyes, curious as to how Rory would handle this absurd situation they found themselves in.
“You won’t be battling this time, Alexi,” she said in response to the Fire-type’s stare, fingers of her left hand running along the Poké Balls at her waist, her mind rapidly going through the possibilities of what each teammate could contribute to the situation. Finally, her hand stopped upon the ball of the recently captured Hilda, the most agile of the bunch and the only one with access to controlled flight, both attributes potentially beneficial in freeing the undergarments from Spinda’s grasp. “I think it’s time to give Hilda a chance.”
Swiftly passing the ball to her right hand, Rory tapped the ball’s small white circle and released the angsty Spearow in a flash of bright white light, preparing to be aggressively attacked by the Tiny Bird Pokémon… but aside from a mild glare, the bird merely flapped in place awaiting directions.
“Glad to see you’ve calmed down since our battle, Hilda,” Rory said, a cautious smile coming to her face as she hoped Spearow’s passive appearance was genuine, though her silent stare was slightly unnerving. “I need your help with this Spinda. If you’re ready and willing, let’s begin with a Growl to draw its attention to us and maybe stop any attempt to escape.”
Hilda hovered in place for a few moments more, continuing to stare the teenager down, before swooping forward as Rory ducked just in time to avoid a collision. It seemed Hilda wasn’t entirely over their previous battle just yet, but she did smoothly transition into an about-face before releasing her mighty call towards the wobbly, undergarment-thieving Spinda.

The blinded spinda did not see the spearow that landed in front of it. It was busy trying to escape with its pilfered goodies, so sure it would have a cozy nest this coming winter if it just got away from the screaming old human. As the feathered avian prepared to holler, the spinda literally ran into it, tripping over Hilda and squashing the bird underneath its fluffy frame. The pilfered unmentionables were scattered everywhere and the spinda panicked, hopping back up to snatch up the undergarments. Hilda got out an indignant growl, which made the spinda flinch...before hurrying to pick up the underwear even faster. <You are not taking my nesting material> the spinda scolded. <This is mine. All mine. I'm going to be comfy and warm and you can't have any of it.> The old lady kept screeching and hobbling closer, making the little bear glance up. <Now go away, you already caused me enough trouble!
