Walking into the tranquil little New Bark Town, the midday sun gleaming overhead in the clear blue sky as various windmills quietly hummed while turning in the breeze, Aurora "Rory" Hawthorne paused and found herself instinctively start twirling a lock of her chestnut curls around her right pointer finger. Nova had mentioned in her letter of need that Professor Elm of New Bark Town was a necessary first visit before continuing onward into the region of Johto, as this was where Rory would be able to acquire her very first true partner Pokémon. Nova had not mentioned anything about the options the professor would be presenting, wanting her dearest friend to go in to the situation with as open a mind as possible, and Rory supposed this was a fair tactic on her part.
However, what brought pause to the teenager's steps and a finger to her flowing curls was one specific detail that Nova had made certain was included in the letter to her quiet and quiet introverted friend from Snowpoint City: Professor Elm is a bit eccentric, and is known for being a little scatterbrained and disorganized when he gets wrapped up with his research. That brief description alone had Rory worried that the professor would be not only quite chatty but somewhat difficult to hold a solid conversation with. She was already anxious enough about being in a brand new region far from home, and certainly didn't need her social anxiety adding to her discomfort. Plus, if this Professor Elm knew of her performance loving family (who were of course renowned the world over), than he'd probably make the false assumption that she was just as bubbly and outgoing as her parents and three siblings. The one bright side to this whole situation, thought Rory as she took another glance up at the sky, was that there didn't appear to be any signs of potential thunderstorms for miles around in all directions.
Closing her eyes, Rory calmly counted out three deep breaths while her right hand transitioned from her hair to the small pouch clipped to her waist, within which rested a variety of small smooth stones. Picking out a flat, oblong stone with rounded edges (one that she had always considered to resemble the shape of a Pokémon egg) and holding it within her closed right hand for extra comfort, Rory started walking once more toward the building with a sign out front that read, "Professor Elm's Pokémon Lab" in easy to read lettering. Stopping before the door, she raised her right hand and gave three knocks before letting it rest again at her waist while she waited for someone to hopefully answer the door.

The quiet spring day was not without his bustling footsteps pounding against the simple steps leading up to Professor Elm’s doorsteps. Cherubic young faces, round and full of the essence of youth itself, pressed their diminutive forms through the threshold, grabby hands outstretched for their very first starters before ultimately being sent on their ways. Engrossed in his own research, often the chestnut haired older man with a slight receeding hairline would simply press his glasses up on his face and point one of his assistance to handle the task. However, such a method where one forgot to look before they spoke was not without its setbacks. Sometimes deliveries were often screamed at the scatterbrained professor, who immediately jumped up from his microscopes and petri dishes to immediately tend to such matters, and whether he remembered to return back or he started an entirely new project was a complete mystery in and of itself. With one of the windows of the lab being left wide open, allowing the gentle spring’s breeze so caress through its open frame and wrap around the Professor and helping assistance, it also invited a strange creature. The small avian plopped up on the windsill with a tilt of its head as she surveyed the lab with its many mahogany tables bright in the ruddy red wood lacquered to protect their frame. Most were littered with strange human items such as magazines and paperwork full of exciting findings and carefully crafted hypotheses. It narrowed its sharp beady eyes angrily and squawked with two flaps of its mighty pink wings, before diving headfirst for Professor Elm with talons outstretched just as an assistant opened the door to greet Rory. “Hello! Welcome to Professor Elm’s lab. He’s…uh…a little busy at the moment…” The assistant apologized, but Elm just shouted over her. “Hey! I remember your parents calling! Please help! The starters are on that table. Can you choose one and fight off this wild Pokemon?” He pleaded, running around his lab as Spearow swooped after him in hot pursuit. This was a terrible nest for its future young, but what was worse was the thought of having humans so close to its nest that it planned to have set up on Route 29. It would show them a thing or two! A Lv. 2 Wild Spearow is attacking Professor Elm! Aurora must select her starter and defend Professor Elm! Shiny: pJbK9I4Cp_1-42 Pokemon: (rare) p_1-6 (uncommon) p_1-3 (mon) p_1-4 (level) p_2-8

Taking a single step back, Rory tried to figure out just what exactly she had walked into... and, perhaps more importantly, whether or not this kind of incident was an everyday occurrence for the eccentric Professor Elm. Also, the fact that her parents had actually called ahead to the professor was an unsurprising discovery, knowing just how much they genuinely both cared about her, but not knowing what else the conversation included brought about some extra anxiety for the already nervous teenage girl. But now was not the time to dwell on the unknown, for the professor clearly needed assistance right away.
Stashing her smooth pebble back away within its special pouch, Rory stepped past the assistant with a quick "Excuse me," and headed directly for the starters sitting upon the table within their respective Poké Balls with a small image before each ball depicting what lay within. The cries of the aggravated Spearow urged her to make a quick decision, and as her mind silently sped through potential future experiences she could likely expect with each partner... her right hand ultimately found itself closed upon the ball containing Charmander, the Fire-type Lizard Pokémon.
Picking it up and the holding the ball before her, the quiet girl from Snowpoint City closed her eyes as she took a deep, reassuring and calming breath... and then locked eyes on the angrily flapping Spearow, ready to hopefully save the day. Battling had never really been her thing, but she had seen enough of her family's performances to know the basics at least. "Charmander, my new friend, please come out and help us with your power..."
A beam of sparkling white light emerged from the simple Poké Ball as its two halves opened up, and from this light emerged an orange reptile with deep blue eyes, a cream-colored belly, and a long tail that narrowed to a brightly burning flame at its end. It, too, almost immediately noticed the Spearow and turned to look back at Rory with an expectant look, which reminded Rory she had to give her new partner a command.
"Right, sorry Charmander," Rory expressed in a quiet a voice, a subtle blush warming her cheeks before the squawk of Spearow brought back her focus and confidence. "Right, right... time to act. I think you know the move Growl, so how about we try to get Spearow's attention off of Professor Elm with that! At least then we could hopefully engage it in battle without potentially hurting that poor man..."

The spearow harassed Elm with pecks and scratches, it wings flapping with menace. How dare there be humans so close to where it wanted to build a nest! Didn't they know it was nesting season and that they. did. not. belong?! Any spearow worth their flight feathers knew better than to let such menaces stick around too long, lest their hatchlings be stolen away by some tiny brat with a ball. It screeched out a battlecry, ready for another wave of attack, when a different human grabbed one of the balls and released a lizard out into the human den. Ah, one of those. One of those human pets. It growled at the spearow and the spearow sneered in return <You think to intimidate me?! HA! You are just a housepet. I will be rid of you and your cowardly kin so that my future hatchlings can nest safely!> And then it promptly swooped down at the charmander to peck, peck, peck away. ((Not now, of course, but would Rory be allowed to attempt to capture this Spearow later on in the battle?))
"Char, char, char!" called out the Lizard Pokémon with each peck it received, attempting to swat at the Spearow with its small arms. Hoping that her new trainer would issue another command sooner rather than later, particularly one that would cause this Spearow some damage and get it out of her face, Charmander stole a glimpse with pleading eyes at the teenage girl with chestnut brown hair who was in fact just beginning to speak again.
"I'm sorry, Charmander!" Rory began, feeling guilty over the fact that this terrible little bird was now taking its anger out on her newest friend. However, what the little Fire-type needed now was not apologies but a partner who could lead it to victory. Taking the small egg-shaped stone back out of her pouch and feeling its smooth edges within her right fist, Rory regained her confidence and issued her next command. "Let's try to get some distance between the two of you with a nice strong burst of Ember!"
Charmander liked the sound of this, and as small flames began rise up from within her chest, she, too, took on a new level of confidence as she turned her head upwards to lock eyes with the annoyingly aggressive Tiny Bird Pokémon.

As Spearow continued its relentless pecking, Rory knew she had to end this battle and relieve Charmander of any more pain. She was about to issue a command for the fiery little lizard to deliver the finishing blow... when all of a sudden, that choice didn't feel quite right. There had to be a reason why the Spearow was so upset, and chances are it was something beyond the Tiny Bird's control, which means it didn't deserve to be seared by flames any more than it already had.
Quickly placing her calming stone back in its little pouch hanging at her waist, Rory's right hand moved back slightly to unclip a single Pokeball from her belt, bringing it up close to her face as she considered what she was about to attempt for the first time ever. "Charmander, my new friend, I really hope this works... and I'm sorry if it doesn't!"
Giving the ball a quick kiss for good luck, Rory took a calming deep breath before locking her eyes on the ferocious little Spearow, pulling her right arm back, and then swinging it forward again as a simultaneous flick of her wrist sent the shiny red and white sphere flying straight and true towards poor Charmander's aggressive attacker.

To say that Spearow was angry was an understatement. It was absolutely livid. Humans gathered in places where they simply didn’t belong, with their strange cubicle living quarters pressed nearby trees that were perfect for roosting and preparing nests in. How could Spearow kind safeguard their nests and keep their young ones protected with such contraptions springing up everywhere, as though these humans needed every square inch of land that they spotted for themselves?! This was something that the pink-winged avian wouldn’t stand for. It fluffed it’s feathers up and turned its beak sharply to Charmander. The flame-tailed lizard seemed to stand down for a moment. Good! Maybe the hairbrained nincompoop finally realized the strength and might of Spearow’s beak! They were fierce birds who would never give up no matter how the odds might be stacked against them. “Had enough, you common house pet?! Or should I peck your brains out some more and teach you some real manners?! Tell your humans to clear out and get rid of this poor excuse of a nest! It’s too close to my tree!”When Rory fished a small ball out of her bag, the wild bird’s eyes widened in alarm. “And just WHAT does your human think it’s going to do with that?!” But…house pets lived in these things, didn’t they? As Spearow convinced itself that she was simply recalling Charmander and nothing more, it preened down its fluffed-up feathers and calmed itself. “She’s just taking you away right? You’re all leaving? That’ll be good!” Spearow huffed. When Rory chucked the ball at Spearow itself, the bird squawked loudly in protest before disappearing in a bright red beam of light. Ding! It was successfully captured! Professor Elm relaxed with a smile. "Thank you for saving us from the Spearow. Well...looks like you've got a Spearow and this Charmander now, huh?" He chuckled. Spearow Name: Hilda Gender: Female Level: 2 OT: Aurora Hawthorne Moves: Peck, Growl Ability: Keen Eye Nature/Personality: Rash // Hilda has a fiery temper and is currently quite distrustful of humans, but Rory is hopeful that she may be able to break through this resentment and form a connection with the fierce little fighter.
Could you also modify Charmander's nickname from Lex to Alexi, please?
------
"I... I suppose I have," Rory responded in surprise, having honestly not fully expected the ball to have been so successful. As she walked over and kneeled down upon the floor to pick up the ball, Charmander coming closer to cautiously peer at the shiny red and white sphere herself. Rory wondered whether or not the angry little bird would continue its assault upon inevitably being sent out in the future, and decided then and there that a day or so of rest for the little Spearow -- or Hilda, which seemed an appropriate name -- might increase her chances of a positive result.
Turning then to Charmander, who appeared have a subtly feminine appearance now that Rory could see the Pokémon up close, Rory thanked the little lizard for her cooperation. "Thank you for assisting me today, Charmander. I really appreciated your help, and would be delighted to have you join me on my adventure through Johto. I truly believe that we could help each other grow stronger together, if you'll have me as your trainer... Alexi?"
Charmander, who had been attentively looking into the teenager's eyes as she spoke, cocked her head at the sound of the suggested nickname. She rather liked it, to be honest, and rather liked the aura of genuine kindness that seemed to be emanating from the girl, too. With a small grin, Alexi, scurried up Rory's arm and made herself comfortable upon the trainer's shoulders like a cozy warm neck pillow, Alexi's tail draping down from Rory's left shoulder with the flame-tipped end hovering carefully over her heart.
Turning back to Professor Elm as she rose to her feet, a small smile upon her own face now that everything seemed to have calmed down, Rory explained why she had come here today. "I'm unsure exactly of just how much my parents shared with you, but I've come from Snowpoint City in Sinnoh here to Johto upon the request of my close friend, Nova, and she highly suggested stopping here to meet you before beginning my adventure across the region."

Professor Elm nodded in agreement with Aurora's words. " Yes, they certainly mentioned that! And it seems this visit has been quite fruitful, hm?" he smiled, turning his attention to the computer on his desk. " Let me just note... Aurora Hawthorne... Snowpoint... Charmander..." His fingers effortlessly danced across the keyboard, accompanied by satisfying clicks and clacks, as he filled in all the required information, murmuring to himself to ensure there were no errors. "There!" he announced, with a final press of the button. " You're free to start your journey from now on! If you need anything else, please check out my site; it has all the details for potential Pokédex holders. Just make sure to read it carefully, alright?" Elm stood up straight, shifting his gaze from the computer screen to Aurora. " And I truly hope you'll find your friend. I'll be cheering you on from my lab. Perhaps you'll even make more friends along the way! Anything is possible now!" With a theatrical thumbs up and a smile stretching from ear to ear, he conveyed his optimism to the girl. Unnoticed by anyone until now, sounds emanated from outside. A small crowd of newcomers and children had gathered in front of the lab, and in the midst of it stood a wild Sentret. Kids were shouting commands at it - " Sit! Stand! Beg! Roll!" - and to the amusement of the onlookers, the creature obediently fulfilled each command, hoping for a prize in the form of a Berry or any other food. Sadly for it, none of the spectators intended to feed the Sentret, despite enjoying its antics and it gradually growing tired of this. After another "roll," the Pokémon decided it had enough and lashed out at the boy, biting him on the hand and leaving a reddish mark. Pandemonium ensued as the child began to scream and cry, the other children yelled and scattered as if the Sentret carried the plague, and older teens conversed among themselves, " Serves him right for annoying it!" Left standing alone, angry and hungry, the Sentret seethed with resentment. Level 8 Sentret is disappointed in humanity. What will Aurora do? ((OOC: Thank you much, and will do!))
Stepping out of the lab upon the sound of a crowd reaching her ears, Rory was surprised and saddened to find a menagerie of people unrelentingly shouting commands at a poor little Sentret who was doing its darnedest to appease everyone... until it finally had enough and lashed out in frustration. As it quite suddenly bit a young boy upon his outstretched hand, chaos unfolded and the people went running away in every direction as the little Normal-type growled and glared at those few who remained.
"Oh my..." spoke the teenager in a soft voice just above a whisper, shocked to discover yet another aggressive 'Mon so soon after dealing with Hilda inside the lab, who had definitely seemed upset with people for one reason or another. While she wasn't entirely sure as to why the Spearow had been so furious, Rory had unfortunately witnessed exactly why Sentret was acting so uncharacteristically mean at this moment.
"Sentret, my friend..." Rory began in her soft voice, cautiously taking three steps toward the Scout Pokémon before kneeling down on one knee. "I'm... I'm so sorry that you were treated like this, that you were taken advantage of without any respect or reward in return. It's not right what those people were doing, and I understand why you're so upset.
"However, not every person is so bad," Alexi, continuing to watch from her perch atop her trainer's shoulders, saw Rory tentatively extend her right arm toward the mammalian creature. At the realization of what the teenager was attempting, the young Charmander felt herself subtly tensing up, preparing to leap forward and engage Sentret in battle with a mighty Scratch should it make any attempt to harm this kindhearted trainer. "If you are willing to give me a chance, my friend, I would be happy to show you all the kindness and love you deserve... but I'll need you to trust me first, Sentret."

Sadly for Aurora, there was a language barrier that still existed between the Wild Sentret and the human race. Were this a Sentret raised in civilization, or had plenty of exposure to humans, it would understand her words. However, this Sentret had only such info as obeying human commands for now as people had used its obediance as a form of entertainment.
As such, her initial greetings were met with wariness, it wasn't growling as she initially spoke and took three steps, but it wasn't about to lash out either. It wasn't a 'stupid' Pokemon, but it wasn't a hostile one either. Not a single word except 'reward' crossed its ears that it could comprehend, and almost on cue, its long ears twitched as she spoke the word.
When that arm finally reached out towards Sentret, with nothing in hind, it instead let out a growl and recoiled backwards, using its tail to stand up as it postured to keep away from her. It was just another human attempting to get it to obey for nothing! It wasn't some common pet!
['Another manipulator! Get away!'] it cried out in response to her hand, not exactly acting out as she was new, unlike those who had been abusing it, but it wasn't going to just accept a random hand thinking that it was free!

Sensing the Sentret's mood changing, Alexi scurried down Rory's outstretched arm and leapt the short distance to the ground where she stood upon all fours with fire-tipped tail held high, placing herself between the teenage girl and the Scout Pokémon. A low growl emanated from the Fire-type, subtly trying to warn the wild Sentret against even daring to try an attack. Even so, Alexi had enough sense within her orange little head to know that she herself would not dare launch an attack without a command from her new trainer, and fully expected that such a command would not be issued unless Sentret made a move to attack first.
"Alexi..." Rory began, caught off guard by both Sentret's reaction to her words of kindness as well as the young Charmander taking the initiative to defend her against a potential threat without any prompting and having only experienced a single prior battle together. "Alexi, hold back on launching any attack unless Sentret moves to strike first, and if so I'd like you to begin with Growl. If we have to, I don't want to hurt this poor one anymore than we have to..."
Returning her attention to the now clearly upset Normal-type, Rory began anew with a continued calm and quiet voice, her right arm returning to her side as she subconsciously removed a long and slender stone from her pouch and gently turned it over within her right hand. "Sentret, I can assure you we mean you no harm... We just want to help you."

The furry meerkat didn’t hatch out of its egg yesterday. It pulled at its long rabbit-like ears with its chubby paws and glared. Alexi and Arurora were just another set of humans with their perfectly trained pets wanting Sentret to perform tricks on command, while chunking small bits of food if Sentret was lucky. Pokémon starved along the open routes that led between the cities, whether through harsh conditions like wintry storms or through territorial disputes. Yet, humans always found it amusing to tease and torment them! Why?! “Your human doesn’t stop chattering that strange nonsense!” Sentret stomped one of its chubby feet into the ground and twisted it as though it were trying to grind one of the blades of grass into the earth. Alexi just stood there not really doing anything. Was it trapped by some strange power that Sentret didn’t quite understand, or did owned Pokémon really lack that much intelligence to think for themselves? How could you trade everything away for that kind of existence?! It just seemed plum wrong in Sentret’s mind. “Tell her to go away! I’m tired of performing tricks!” Sentret demanded. It bolted. Small furry legs kicked off the dirt of the earth and it tore through the long emerald blades in a headlong path marked for Alexi. The flame-tailed lizard darted out of the way, rushing to a safer vantage point, but to no avail. Sentret easily lapped around, curving back in it’s speedy haste, and slammed into Alexi’s back with all of its might. She staggered a bit before catching her footing and spun around, releasing a loud and powerful growl meant to scare off her adversary. Sentret jumped back for a split second with a nervous sigh, and blinked with a serious stare. “That’s all you’ve got?” It asked skittishly. "Not even close, furball," Alexi responded through gritted teeth, the disrespect towards Aurora and unexpected strike to her back causing the Charmander to finally break her silence and speak out. "Oh, and that 'nonsense' my human keeps 'chattering' is her trying to show you some sympathy, not asking you to perform some stupid tricks... but clearly you're not in the mood for sympathy."
Aurora couldn't understand exactly what her little fire lizard was saying, but the body language and tone alone were enough for her to predict that there weren't exactly kind words being exchanged between these two. Despite how much she disliked hurting innocent Pokémon, as it certainly wasn't Sentret's fault that the earlier crowd had been so disrespectful, Aurora was starting to feel that this problem couldn't be resolved by words and kind intentions alone. "Alexi, I think we may need to really fight back in order get through to Sentret.
"With that being said," continued the teenager, transitioning from crouching on one knee back up to a standing position with the smooth stone still in her right hand, taking a single deep breath to help herself get focused for battle. "Quick Attack will probably be our toughest challenge this time, but maybe... maybe if we keep up close, it may prove more difficult for Sentret to pull that move off if it doesn't have the distance to run."
"Sounds like a plan that has potential to me," Alexi said in response, giving her flaming tail a nice wag before setting off on an all-fours run towards the nervous Scout Pokémon, her eyes focused in on the cream-colored ring like a bullseye upon the Normal-type's chest. Even if Sentret tried to run, she would follow and keep herself focused in upon that ring.
"Once you get right up close, Alexi, let loose your best Ember!"
"Got it," Alexi responded, her tail flaring up and flames gathering within her chest as she got ever closer to her target. "Hope you're ready for this dose of teamwork, furball!"
