Another bug spotted and Breeze called to her trainer. A fat, round, quite unslightly creature reared its glowing butt. Bloody Volbeat. He's seen far too many of those and Illumise in Hoenn, they were like flies, pests. While he'd like to catch it for at least a Pokedex entry, it was not worth taking the contest slot, with possibility for finding something much better than... a round ugly bug. - Nah, that's not it. Blow it away. - Crow waved his hand, signalling Breeze to attack, which she did. She started to get nervous - the contest was slowly approaching its finish and they only had a tiny worm to show. It was as if... her trainer was not trying at all? No, he was to proud to give up without a fight... right?
Against her better judgement, she sent another powerful Gust towards frankly innocent bug, its sin being only that they happened to stumble upon it.
Using Running Shoes! Breeze used Gust twice!

Crow was unamused, seeing the bug still buzzing.
- Come on, you just destroyed a whole worm family, and you're going to let this one go? - he taunted Breeze, trying to provoke her into launching another devastating attack, just like she did with Beautifly. Breeze felt guilty about it. She was in no mood to attack recklessly, and her trainer's comments only soured her mood further. Instead of unleashing damaging winds, she swooped down to finish off the Volbeat and move on with the search.
Breeze used Tackle!

Crow crossed his arms, content with how things were progressing. Breeze was shaping up nicely, transforming from a small, yappy bird into a force to be reckoned with. The bug contest? It didn't matter. He did all this to prove a point; he had no real intention of winning or granting the Pidgeotto her freedom. She had evolved and tasted strength she could never have obtained as a wild Pokémon. That surely had to change her mind about him! After all, he had trained her to this point.
An announcement rang through the National Park. The Bug Catching Contest was about to end.
- Looks like we're out of time! Oh well... you didn't try hard enough, it seems. - the trainer scoffed, feigning disappointment at his bird. Breeze panicked; it was not going to end like this! She would get her freedom, no matter the cost! She suddenly dove into the grass, sensing movement within. This had to be it - the bug that would win the contest...! Last one, please

And that was it. A tiny little fly gazed in fear from between Breeze's talons, shocked and surprised by the sudden attack. The creature was smaller than her beak, utterly pathetic. Pidgeotto cawed in frustration; that was her chance, and she had blown it! She was so angry she felt like pecking the little wings off that Cutiefly...!
Crow looked curiously over Breeze's shoulder to see what she had caught.
- Tsk. Honestly, I think the worm we have stands a better chance than this little flea. - he smirked cynically. Everything was going just as he wanted, further angering the bird. Beating her wings, she focused the full force of Gust on the tiny bug, wanting to blow it away out of her sight. Using Running Shoes! Breeze used Gust twice!

A loud whistle filled the air. All trainers stopped dead in their tracks, and wild bug Pokémon fled, startled, into the deepest parts of the National Park. The Bug Catching Contest was over.
- We're asking all contestants to please gather by the central fountain! The judges will evaluate your catches shortly! - Gym Leader Bugsy, hailing from the humble town of Azalea, spoke through the megaphone, his voice ringing loud and clear across the area. People slowly started making their way to the centre. Crow breathed a sigh of relief - finally, it was over, and he didn't need to prolong this charade any longer.
- Come, Breeze. Time to see how well we did. - the ex-Rocket said, a sly grin painted on his face. They had not done well, and he knew it. The pitiful worm he had caught would probably lose to a Caterpie; it was so small. Breeze was frustrated; she had pissed her only chance to get away from this narcissistic lunatic of a trainer, believing it was her fault. She walked somberly after him, staring at the ground beneath her talons, thinking about her old nest. Her mate had to take care of their progeny all on his own. She wondered how they looked now, for the last time she saw them, they were still in eggs.
Several judges walked around the contestants, thoroughly inspecting each and every bug caught during the event. They evaluated their size, health, and even the richness of their colours. Glancing around, Crow knew there was no way he could compete. Sizzlipede? Pinsir? Absolutely not.
Soon enough, a pair of judges, an elegant older gentleman and a tall woman, came by to see his Sewaddle. They examined it closely, picking it up, rotating it in every direction, touching its leaf, and pulling on it. The worm was not too pleased with such treatment, akin to an alien probing, but it was too scared and weak to do much about it other than wiggle its thin green body. The judges then started whispering to each other, nodding and shaking their heads, while Crow stood stoic, not even looking at them. Instead, he spotted a familiar face among the contestants: Essence, impatiently waiting for the judges to finish with her Shelmet. He couldn't help but crack a tiny smirk, seeing her act like a diva with the ugly snail she had caught.
To his utter surprise, when the verdicts were read, Essence scored second place, prompting him to give three slow claps. Even more surprising was that the winner was none other than the famous Professor Oak! What a small world, to encounter the Pokémon Professor again, after having received his starter from him!

- Hey, at least we aren't last. Only second last. - Crow chuckled, reading the card with the names of contestants and their scores hung just outside the entrance to the park. Breeze hadn’t looked up a single time since the contest ended, staring blankly at the ground. The anger within her grew each time her trainer opened his obnoxious mouth, constantly rubbing their loss in her face. The awful feeling she had felt after evolution, this uncontrollable rage, rekindled within her once more. She NEEDED to release it, yet she tried to restrain it as best she could, despite feeling as if it would eventually tear her apart from within. She couldn't let this rule over her; she couldn't just lose control every time like this!
Crow had little idea about what was going on. To him, it just seemed like the bird was sulking after doing a poor job during the contest. He saw it as a great moment to reveal the purpose of their attendance and maybe try to sway her to his side.
- Don't worry about it too much. I actually wasn't even trying to win. - the ex-Rocket said, waving his hand dismissively. The Pidgeotto lifted her head with a sharp glare. She had suspected as much, but him blatantly admitting it... she felt like she was boiling inside, about to implode. Momentarily, the teal-haired trainer turned his back towards her. - I bet evolution felt fantastic, didn't it? All that new power and form... You're now so much better than if you had stayed in those shoddy woods. - he continued. Breeze took a step back in shock. - And I gladly helped you reach it! Do you see now what I'm trying to do here? Without me, you'd be just an early route critter to faint.
He expected some sort of reaction. Perhaps an understanding nod, a caw, a little hand-to-talon bump of truce.
Certainly, he did not expect to turn around towards his bird, only to be met with her talons, sharp as knives, tearing into his face, aiming right for his eyes. Breeze tore the sunglasses off her trainer’s nose, which broke to shards upon the impact with the ground and sunk her claws around his right blind eye, attempting to rip it out. All of her anger, frustration, and pain! She held it within her pink-coloured talons, now using it to stand against this human! This awful monster who took her away from her family, who caused her to be this way! It was his influence that had forcefully dragged out the worst in her! And he would PAY!
Crow screamed in agony, stumbling backwards as crimson streamed from the fresh wounds on his face. His hands instinctively reached up to protect his eyes, but Breeze’s fury was relentless. She screeched in rage, flapping her wings wildly, brown and golden feathers flying wildly all around, determined to make him suffer for everything he had put her through. To make matters worse, she dug right into the bruised tissue, an excrutiating reminder of his last encounter with the savage Ursaring, now made double as agonizing.
Nearby trainers and onlookers gasped and shouted, unsure of how to react. Some rushed to help, while others stood frozen in shock. Breeze’s uncontrollable rage had erupted, and nothing would stop her now.
Except an elbow hit to the chest.
Breeze fell to the ground, landing on her back and knocking the wind out of her. Crow held onto his right side, yelling obscenities at the Pokémon as blood dripped from between his fingers onto the ground and his hoodie. The pain was so intense that he wasn’t even sure if Breeze had actually managed to take his eye.
- I'm FINE! LEAVE ME ALONE! - he yelled, stumbling around, trying to push away anyone who got close and offered to take him to the hospital. He felt humiliated and vulnerable, two things he hated the most in this world.
As he stumbled, the trainers and onlookers around him hesitated, unsure of what to do. Some continued to offer help, while others backed away, unnerved by the scene. Breeze struggled to get back on her feet, her anger still simmering but tempered by the shock of the confrontation. She stared at him, her chest heaving as she caught her breath, realising the extent of what she had done.
Crow’s mind raced, filled with a mix of rage and desperation. This incident had shattered the control he thought he had over his bird, and now he had to face the consequences. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, and glared at Breeze with a mix of fury and betrayal.
- You’ll regret this. - he spat through gritted teeth, his voice filled with venom. - You think you can just attack me and get away with it?
Despite his words, there was a flicker of uncertainty in his remaining good eye. For the first time, he saw Breeze not as a tool or a means to an end, but as a powerful creature capable of fighting back. And that realisation both terrified and enraged him further. He did this to make her stronger and this is what he got!
As she lay there defenceless, he was tempted to kick her, stomp on her, and cause her as much pain as she had caused him. Alas, too many people were staring at them, so whatever punishment he intended to exact had to be done away from prying eyes. Finally, he recalled her to her Pokéball. As the adrenaline wore off, the pain became overwhelming. Groaning, he decided to retreat from the park, pushing past the stunned gawkers. He wasn't yet sure where to go or what to do exactly; he only knew he needed to get away from everyone and assess the damage done to his face.
