They were at it again, Aglaia who had more than enough in her own beedrill Wystan and didn't have any motivation to try win the competition, and Smokey the hippopotas, who wasn't even Aglaia's. They were an odd pair, a reluctant trainer and a pokemon more than happy to take the lead if allowed. They had managed to get a strangely teamwork up and running with the same overall goal in mind, to find and catch some pokemon Smokey's official trainer, Lei, was interested in.

"There are many this year," Aglaia commented, halfway to herself as she looked at the trainers waiting around her for the signal to start. "Potas!" Smokey declared confidently, they wouldn't have a chance against her!
"And lots of different pokemon," Aglaia added thoughtfully and wondered what the other's tactics were. The birds made sense, and as usual there were someone who had brought a charmander (or its evolution, Aglaia wasn't strong in that). The plethora of bugs made sense too, bug catchers were sure to be around an event like this, and she smiled when she spotted the ivysaur, she herself had participated with her own back when she tried it out first. A little tadpole and the very small bidepal lilac poekmon surprised her, they looked a bit small for a thing like this.

"Hippopotas!" Smokey called and Aglaia woke up for her thoughts only to realize that she had missed the bell and everyone else was already on the move. Including Smokey! Aglaia opened her mouth to call out to her pokemon, but decided against it, as it would just look bad and draw attention to her. She hurried after the ground type who confidently reached some bushed a bit away from the others and called out her challenge.

The first one who bravely answered the call, was a scatterbug. Smokey huffed annoyed and tried to ignore it at first, calling out to try get someone else to present themselves.
"That's not how it works, Smokey," Aglaia said with a chuckle and the hippopotas huffed some more and turned her head away. The Scatterbug puffed itself up and glared offended, Aglaia thought it looked similar to a jillgypuff.
"This is what we found, so we'll battle it and find something else," Aglaia said and the scatterbug chittered angrily and glared at Aglaia.
Smokey turned towards it and glared ominously as sand began to rise and whip around, if it wanted a battle, she would give it a battle.

The little cocky scatterbug learned what it meant to be out of your league, as Smokey charged at it and simply grabbed it and flung it away. She gave a final huff, looked expectantly at Aglaia, who looked at bit uncertain at her.
"Well.. done?" She tried and Smokey snorted but looked pleased, "it was very effective. Let's see if we can find something else."

Aglaia had barely uttered those words when something else caught her attention. Someone was heading back towards the entrance already and hadn't he had that strange and scary looking fish at his side, who looked anything but beaten, she would have thought he had failed and was out. Just like the kid who ran past him in the same direction, crying with a fainted weedle in her arms.
But he seemed confident and she quickly checked her watch to be sure she hadn't missed the time and the competition was over already.
"He must have found what he sought for," she mumbled and turned her attention back to Smokey, who was missing! She groaned and looked around frantically in the hope she would spot her and wouldn't need to embarrass herself by calling out after her. Had she dug underground perhaps?

Then she spotted movement in the shrubbery from which the scatterbug had appeared, Aglaia took a step back even though it was far away and moved in the opposite direction. Then Smokey's brown nose broke the green surface as she looked back for Aglaia.
"Hippo!" she called and dived under the leafy cover once more, Aglaia grinded her teeth as she made her way around and tried to keep up without having to head into the shrubbery.

What Smokey had found was a pokemon who had done everything it could to hide. Not only had the shelmet buried itself in the tangled growth, it also snapped its shell shut when Smokey somehow found it deep inside here.
Smokey snorted unimpressed and called out for Aglaia to come, while she kept a close eye on her target. It opened its shell a tiny bit to peek out at the strange sand colored pokemon in front of it. Smokey stared back and then yawned deeply to show how unfaced she was the situation and that she wasn't intimidated by it at all. She huffed and twitched her ears, where was Aglaia? She had informed her there was a bug here and it was the girl's responsibility to keep track of what pokemon were their target and which weren't.
Aglaia had talked about what pokemon it was before they started but Smokey hadn't paid it much attention. They were a team which meant they had different tasks, Smokey had thought that Aglaia needed more than just throwing pokeballs, and since she herself was so great at what she was doing, the hippopotas had decided it was a good task for Aglaia to have, to remember what they were looking for.

"Potas!" Smokey called out again, why hadn't Aglaia showed up yet?! They risked the shelmet would escape if she took too long. The hippopotas didn't think about that while it was fairly easy for her own low stature to push her way through the tangle, it was a lot harder for a tall human like Aglaia, and it didn't help that Aglaia wasn't keen on flailing around in the mess with potential aggressive pokemon around her.
Smokey stomped her foot impatiently and then decided to take next step, and she guided some of the sand, which always swirled up when she felt her adrenaline rise, to form a circle around the shelmet. There, that should stop it from running away until Aglaia had snailed her way through and did what she was supposed to do.

Aglaia frowned worried as sound of struggle was heard from the green tangle spread out in front of her. She was not dressed to trek through something like that as she hadn't expected to have to. All the other years they had been in the more park like areas and it had been no problem at all, but of course pokemon would hide inside things like this.
She glanced around and saw that others have finished and returned to the starting point as well, and she felt the pressure of falling behind. A quick glance at her watch reassured her she had plenty of time left, but she didn't like getting the attention from being dead last.

With a quiet groan Aglaia began to work her way into the shrubbery, she winced when it got clear there were thorns as a part of it, since they not only tucked her trousers, but also poked her skin.
She carefully pulled a bramble branch away with her fingers and bend forward to see what was going on. Her mouth fell open when she found Smokey waiting rather impatiently while a shelmet was sound asleep with a lesser dust tornado swirling around it.
Was this one of the pokemon Lei was missing, she couldn't remember but it looked like it with how Smokey had prepared it for capturing. Aglaia fumbled for at sport ball as she decided to trust the pokemon's judgement. Smokey rolled her eyes at the ungraceful throw of the ball which at least managed to hit its mark.

With the sleeping shelmet it was easy for Aglaia to hit her mark without too much struggle, it caught it right away and Smokey turned to look expectantly at Aglaia, who didn't have time to praise her over the moon right now as she was trying to force her way to her prize and pick it up without getting scratched up too much.
Smokey watched her annoyed for a bit and then turned to shuffle deep into the shrubbery again in the search of some other pokemon. Aglaia made her way out again and pulled the paper where Lei's wanted pokemon were noted on. "You did great Smokey!" Aglaia called as she unfolded the paper and remembered from last time, that the hippopotas worked best if she got praised. "It was really effective, both putting it to sleep and making sure it didn't run anywhere," she added and cut her praising short as she looked at the list with a frown. She double checked it but shelmet was not on it.
"Eh, Smokey? Why did you stop this one? It's not one of the ones Lei needs," Aglaia asked and Smokey popped her head up from the shrubbery to glare at her, "Hippo! Hippotas! Hippo!" She scolded loudly and disappeared under the green surface again.
Aglaia stared wide eyed at where she had disappeared and quickly decided to drop the matter.

Smokey paused as a strange line of mud ran straight through the shrubbery in an uneven path, she studied it for a moment and from how it was dripping from the branches she figure which way it had been going and followed it. She pushed her way out of the tangled mess of greens and went straight out on the main path, on which Aglaia stood a little way down, still looking into the bramble mess the hippopotas had been buried in a moment ago.
The path of mud lead straight to a strange looking pokemon which pushed a mudball in front of it.
"Hippopotas!" Smokey called to her trainer and gestured towards the strange pokemon close by. Aglaia jumped startled, checked the list and then sent her partner pokemon a nervous smile, "that's one she doesn't have."
"Potas!" Smokey cheered and rushed after the little mud pusher.
"Don't be too harsh! It looks weak!" Aglaia shouted after her but Smokey just ran ahead and got in the way so that the little bug rolled its mudball into her and got stopped. Smokey looked at it with a smirk and then yawned deeply, and added a little disdain full huff.
Aglaia crouched nearby and then rolled the sport ball over the ground towards the wild bug int he hope of not getting noticed.

The mudball rolling pokemon peeked out from behind the mudball, and to Smokey's surprise it was upside down! It waved a hind leg, one of the ones highest up now, in the air angrily while it scolded and raged. How rude of this strange sand colored pokemon, couldn't it see it was working hard and she was in the way? And even if she hadn't noticed at first, now she refused to move, it was infuriating!
The rellor was so angry it didn't noticed the sport ball which rolled quietly towards it, it didn't really react to the light bump at its back, although it clearly noticed that it was getting sucked inside the ball. It dug its claws deep into its mudball in the nick of time, and got it pulled with it inside.

"Great work Smokey!" Aglaia praised and the hippopotas raised her head proudly. She huffed and brushed one of her front legs off with the other, not that it had been hard at all, to be fair she hadn't really done anything. Smokey felt her mood dim and she huffed annoyed, why was she praised for when she was not doing something and not when she did great?
"Quick thinking, stopping it and distracting it. Had you attacked you surely would have chased it off," Aglaia, finding her attempt to find something to praise the pokemon quite pathetic.
Smokey paused to look thoughtful, a pleased smile spread on her face. Yeah, she had been pretty clever there, of course it had all been a plan by her all along. "Hippo!" She verbally patted her own back and pranced forward down the path, more showing off than actually looking for something.

"That's mine! Mine!" Some teenager screamed as he and his pikipek race after a little blue bug which ran in their direction. Smokey stopped and narrowed her eyes, Aglaia quickly scanned it with her pokedex and checked the list. No, not one Lei was interested in.
The bug was surprisingly fast and was picking up speed, it was going to get away from the kid at this pace, not even the little bird could keep up.
"Chase it back to them Smokey," Aglaia said quietly and the hippopotas shot a surprised look over her shoulder, but then stepped forward.
"From the sandstorm to the sandpit, sure you won't run back to the lesser of evil?" The hippopotas taunted the karrablast and leaped at it with her mouth open.

The karrablast puffed itself up and glared at Smokey. "I'm not afraid of you, I'm the toughest around here!" It threatened confidently and ran forward to meet her, tiny arms raised and ready to slash furiously at the hippopotas. Smokey was much bigger though and she barraged through it and trampled it to the ground, before she spun around and grabbed it with her mouth and threw it back towards the other trainer and his bird.
"Then why were you running away from them?!" She taunted and it shot her a frightened look and then decided that the other trainer and his bird was a much better opponent, or perhaps even a potential battle partner than the strong and uncaring hippopotas.

As the karrablast made a run for it, right back into the arms of the other kid, who immediately ordered his bird to attack it. It wasn't a fair battle any longer now the bug had already been heavily damaged, but the pikipek still struggled and the young trainer quickly threw a sport ball and captured the bug.
Smokey huffed unimpressed and turned back to Aglaia, who was still watching the kid jump around in celebration while his bird landed exhausted on the ground. She smiled a bit, happy she could help but hoped it wouldn't give him too much trouble.

"Thank you, you made him very happy," Aglaia said kindly to Smokey, the hippopotas just stared with intent expectation, that was not what she wanted to hear.
"You handled that perfectly?" Aglaia added uncertain and Smokey sent her a dry look, the words was right but couldn't se at least try sound more like she meant it? She snorted and turned as she accepted it.

"We better head back, time is almost up it seems," Aglaia said, a lot of other trainers were already gathering at the entrance. A few were still rushing around trying to find that last elusive bug who'd win them it all.
